[Q] Demo Mode? Anyone know how to start it. - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was poking around with Anti Spy Mobile (there is also a free version) and I came across a system app called Demo Mode. Does anyone have any idea how to run this app? Or, what it could be for?

Try a launcher that allows custom shortcuts, it might find it in its list.

Good call on that, don't know why it did not not occur to me to try that. It gives me a warning about loss of data. Might wait until I do a factory reset tomorrow to try it out

Its basically a retail mode (used in display phones). Call/data functionality is disabled, however WiFi & BT are active and only camera and stock pics/sound are available.

Thanks! I found it! I've used Nova for a long time but never knew it could do that.
Too bad it requires a factory reset to exit demo mode...

I played with demo mode and it was nothing special.
When I went to factory reset the phone, it asked for a password.
That freaked me out for a bit because I never set a password.
After searching XDA, I discovered that the password that Motorola
used was "demomodeexit"(without the quotes). I'm posting this
here again just in case someone runs into this problem.

I bought a refurbished RAZR Maxx HD from MobileKarma and it's in Demo Mode. I tried hard/factory reset several times and it doesn't ask for password. When I begin to setup the phone it recognizes my Gmail account and settings but within 2 minutes the demo mode takes over and loads all demo stuff. Another "feature" of demo mode is only 45% battery charge.
Any ideas??? Anyone???

Perhaps try to connect the phone to a computer and manually delete demo mode from the phone, then one more factory reset? It's worth a shot at least. Make sure to back up the demo mode files first though, just in case.

Unlock the boot loader... That will work

To those who wanted to exit demo mode. Try these steps:
Step 1: Go to PlayStore,
Step 2: Download "All-In-One ToolBox"
Step 3: After installing > Open the App, Go to Toolbox > Go to Boot Speedup > Then System Apps (from the upper tabs)
Step 4: Find Demo Mode (It should be Enabled) > Disable It.
Step 5: Exit the App & Reboot your phone. You're Done.
**No more Annoying "Demo Mode running" notification on the status bar**
Give a Thanks, by liking the "Thanks" button, if it helped.

Android Device Manager rolling out!

Not sure how this happened but I've now got Android Device Manager under settings, device administrator.
The other day my phone had a hissy fit, restarted and went into "safe mode" and then after restarting had reset all the Widgets and task bar to stock (lost all my folders etc) checked here this morning and had the option to activate!

Hey,
I think it's not been activated by Google just yet - that's what I've been reading.. though it should up active soon.
Interesting, I can see it too; it's probably somehow been enabled there, but the actual functionality behind it won't appear until it's fully released.

ADM is now live and working. See here for info and here for thread
I'm sure Google will add plenty of nice features for this but it's just absolutely ridiculous how you can't locate your phone unless you physically have your GPS on. What if, like me, GPS is only ever turned on when I need it. Useless if it got stolen (luckily I use Where Is My Droid aswell...)

ADM may be revolutionary for Nexus/pure devices but Samsung Dive/Find My Mobile has been doing the same thing (and more) for at least two years. Google could re-package dog crap as a "feature" and people would go nuts where the manufacturers have been doing some pretty cool stuff that gets overlooked, criticized, or taken for granted.

The problem is Samsung features like the one you described are often hidden under a stale and flowless user interface.
Thouchwiz is a weakness that Samsung must fix.
In light of the UI changes being made both Apple and Google... Samsung needs to do some major work.

And you think finding ADM under "Security>Device administrators" on the device and in a "store" under "settings" on a PC is supremely fresh and intuitive? The latter seems like a kludge either because Google was too lazy to create a dedicated site for ADM or it was cheaper/faster just to throw it in to Play because that’s where all their device management already takes place.
This is where Find My Mobile's controlled on the device. Pretty simple and straight-forward to me.

I think the features in TW are great; it's one of the reasons I buy Samsung devices. I agree that the appearance of TW is dated and could use an overhaul to make it more contemporary. Sense is a beautiful (but functionally deficient) overlay in my opinion. I think stock Android is a barren wasteland aesthetically and functionally. Comparing it to iOS is a really big stretch. Now that a GE SGS4 exists those that hate TW don't have to continue to attack it.
Touchwiz isnt the problem AT ALL. The problem is samsungs software only works on touchwiz. This works on just about everything, and as featureless as it might be at the moment, it wouldnt take google long to catch up if they wanted to.

You could start with anti viruses and alike... or see what processes are running through adb / shell when the message shows up.
Connect the android to your computer running a live logcat and see what happens when that creepy smile shows up.
It's weird, never saw anything like that before, seems like from one moment to another will jump our of the screen and start hacking and slashing :b
Lol it's a 3rd party app. That you can be 100% sure of. If you were to boot your phone into safe mode it would stop happening.

Strange indeed. Could it be a network message of some sort? Though I haven't heard of it before, it's possible that it is a network connection acknowledgment of some sort.
here are my findings..
current network: TELCEL (mexico)
smiley appearing after loosing and regaining signal (doesnt matter if it has data enabled or not)
apparently theres a sim toolkit in every sim from TELCEL, i thought that it might be the main issue (toolkit is some services the network provider has )
current solution: changed runtime from dalvik to ART, has been almost 24 hrs without that smiley... just fyi

Didn't work, option is still missing.
Quick research on the play store shows several people with S6/Edge phones complaining about hotword detection option missing.
And I just checked mine, its missing for me too.
So strange.... had it visible and working on both my new phones this morning, and now GONE - nothing but the one option to launch it from the Google Now screen, all other options done disappeared - wtf mate

You know what's wild, I've had the always on feature missing from my Nexus 9 for a long time, like months.. G Now just updated this morning, and now suddenly it's working again (???)
Do you guys have the correct language set?
I do. My voice features disappeared as well
Have the same issue. 'Anywhere' hot word detection disappeared yesterday. I also think it must have been the update I ran. Uninstalling the Google now update had no effect though. Also tried setting the language to English US, no effect. Next thing I was going to try was factory reset, but sounds like this don't work either?
Installed Google launcher for the time being. Atleast I can use 'okay Google' from all my home screens until this is resolved.

Same thing happened with the Moto X.
There is a config flag that lists the 'blacklist' phone models. There used to be an app to force the Google app into debug/dogfood mode so that you could change it - but I haven't seen any way to do that w/ the newest versions. My guess is that Samsung chose to disable listen everywhere to try to force people into using s-voice.

I just ran a test, recorded a 4 min video with no freezes. Curious if you had lots of apps loaded in memory, or if it was especially warm in that room. I checked and only had a couple of apps loaded. Just two things I thought of. Still would be very interested in what support says. I do sometimes take fairly long videos of music performances. Never had that issue on my previous phone either.
I would start no but also never had problems with my pixel 2xl a oneplus 6 or any other phones I've had in the past. I could do a factory reset and see if that's fixes it. I highly doubtful it will do anything

How did you revert back to a previous version of the camera app? Isn't the current Sep 5th update the same one the phone was released with?
Go to the settings page and find the camera app and click clear cache and data then click the disable button, this should uninstall and updates then if it doesn't take you the playstore then go too the playstore and find the Google camera app and go to the top right hand corner and click the drop down thing and uncheck the auto update function.

Also any way to take a screen shot or a pic of the error you're getting after running the unlock APK? - NP
This is the error i get (An unknown error occured. This may be because of a network problem. Please try again later.)
I had it for 3 years lul and removing and adding the google account dosen't do anything same error message :/
Do you have Discord or a Instant Messaging app ? It would be easier and a lot faster to talk together SpMorpion#1131

So do you have any ideas now?
Keep trying, and only use the unlock tool from here, if I don't remember if I was connected to Wi-Fi or not I know that I didn't have a Google account logged into. Are you ruining the unlock APK from the SD card or from the root directory from the tablet's on board memory? - NP

So i've been having this problem for at least 3 years. The unlock app is telling me to connect to wifi but i am... This is my first time talking about it on forums, i sent well over 20 emails to asus and called them twice and still no luck, they havent help me since then and the only thing that they tell me to ask a professional about it... So is there anyway that i can unlock it, without this stupid support?

Another thing I was thinking is, what market is you table for, North America, World Wide [WW], ect. This will have a lot to do with the firmware it's running and which unlock APK you need to use. - NP

I'm running it on the board memory, i can't move the app to my sd card if it is wanted...
I think my tablet is for North America, i'm in eu but i got a american charger and in the build version its saying JOP40D.US_epad-10.6.1.14.10-20130801
Only advice is to keep trying, make sure you're logged into your wifi because it wont unlock unless it can "talk" to Asus' servers. - NP
A very long shot: Use a VPN to connect to a US server, then try the unlock tool
