I keep grabbing my nexus exactly where the camera is - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have to clean the camera lens pretty much everyday, almost every single time I take out my phone of my pocket, I grab it exactly where the camera module is , is it only me? Is there a particular reason why Google decided to move the camera from the middle to the top right side?

Cellphones are compactly designed, they have it there because that's the available space to put it in relation to all other hardware components in the phone. And I think it's more likely LG engineers who put it there.
Just chop off the fingers that get in the camera way or carry a microcloth with you to clean the camera when it's dirty.

Doesn't affect me. Ergonomics dictate that my camera lens is in the bottom-right corner of my pocket

I do the same thing.. Drove me nuts at first, now that I'm more aware of the camera placement I've changed the way I hold my phone..

I have the same issue. Often times it results in hazy photos with light flares.

So do you guys keep your phones in your pockets, right-way-up? Then grab it using "pinch and pull"?
Try this.
Put your phone in your pocket upside down with the screen facing inwards against your leg.
Now pretend you're receiving a call. Slip your hand fully in your pocket (as you would if you're keeping your hand warm) so it is over the back of your phone (which will be between your palm and your leg) and grab. Pull it out and its already the correct way round in your hand for taking calls or typing.
Then compare that to the right-way-up pinch and pull. You probably have to swizzle the handset in your hand so its in the correct position to answer a call, which leaves more chance for droppage

Tried and tested
I used to drop my phone a fair bit until I realised what was happening, then I changed and no more dropping. But also, lens doesn't get touched either

it sounds quite useful, but what happens when you listen music with your phone like I do all the time? it's impossible is to keep the phone upside down because of the headphone jack

It's the opposite for me. Past phones moto x, gs3, gs4 I had to constantly clean the glass over the lens of camera. N5 is off to the side I rarely have to wipe it

Getting a sore thumb?

I love this phone, but the larger size (coming from a GS2) definitely puts a strain on my thumb as I move it up and down the screen, especially to hit the buttons. I don't have small hands, but I don't have large hands either, and this is definitely causing some discomfort after heavy usuage.
So, in case anyone else is experiencing this is well, a nice solution is to install Pie Control from the play store and configure it to provide home, back and menu buttons on the sides of the screen when you swipe. It works great, just takes a while to get into the habit, and it's much quicker and easier than moving all the way to the bottom to press the buttons. It's completely configurable as well.
Lol, gave me a chuckle.
I had a similar situation when I got my s3 coming from an s1. Eventually I got used to the larger screen and just naturally started holding the phone differently. My s4 isn't a great deal bigger than my s3 but it is noticeable. You will all get used to the size in no time at all, I promise.

I know, it sounds like a classic first-world problem ... I have this amazing, incredible, portal device that can do almost anything anywhere I go, but ... my poor thumb gets tired using it!! :crying:
Are you kidding me? This thread is sooooo pointless.

I had a similar problem going to s3 but I have small hands. I had to get treated for an injury at the base of my palm which was probably due to one-handed use. I kind of avoid using my thumb for scrolling or pressing buttons while holding the phone one-handed. I just use the index finger of the other hand to touch the screen. As a general rule, if you have discomfort using something, don't keep doing it, or take a rest, or find another way to do it. I learned the hard way

Yeah, very true! That's why I'm trying out the Pie Control, so far it's working pretty well. Also alternating by using my left hand when possible.

I tried using Pie Control for a while but it became a bit of an annoyance whenever you didn't want to touch it. Another thing you can do, if your S4 version supports it, is to install an AOSP-based ROM and turn on the soft/virtual keys so that they appear above the capacitive buttons. Then turn off the capacitive buttons and their LED (the hack is found in a Google search). This makes reaching for the buttons easier but at the expense of shorter screen space.
There will be insensitive people here who will scoff at and mock your problems (happened to me before too, just for saying I had small hands), but RSI is a real serious issue and is relevant to this phone, especially as these flagship devices are not going to get any smaller. Not everyone here has large hands.
Anyways I think this should be moved to the Q&A section.. ?

Yes, I realize that. I compared the two when I got my s4. The extra height of the screen is negligible but noticeable. I use my nexus 7 one handed so not a problem for me.

Dpad clicking

I love the shield so far, its by far my most favorite android device out of all the ones Ive owned in the past and currently own. Ive notived the dpad makes some quite loud clicking noises, especially the up button. I was curious how many others have this problem as well. If its only affecting a few devices im thinking about sending it in as its actually woke my wife up a few times (shes a light sleeper) when im gaming in bed. Thanks guys.

There was a pretty large thread on the Nvidia forums about this. Their engineering team basically has told support that the d-pad clicking issue affecting some devices is fine, and won't affect the longevity of the device. *grrr*.
Mine had a really bad clicking noise, hitting up, and a quieter but still annoying click hitting right. It made me completely not want to use it. I pushed the issue with the online chat support people, and they overnighted me a replacement with a return label.

Haha, I guess that bit of info will be helpful!
No, the issue was not there with the replacement. My replacement is perfect. Nvidia also reached out to me after I received the replacement to make sure I was happy. I was blown away with the customer service after the initial frustrations.
I had this issue and they shipped me a replacement with the same issue. The unit was also marked up and looked used. I sent it back and they send a 2nd unit. The 2nd unit was no better. I gave up after this and am just dealing with a noisy d-pad. Basically I just don't use the d-pad unless I have too.

Vibrator compared to SGS 3

I moved to the N5 from a SGS 3. The haptic on the s3 was "crisp" fast and pleasant. The N5 is kind of anemic, slow and annoying. I'm not sure how else to explain it. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it possible mine is funky?

It's definitely slower and quieter than it was on my HTC One X. But I like that. Doesn't annoy my coworkers as much when it goes off on my desk. And doesn't scare the crap out of me.

Personally my previous phone was an S3 and I prefer the vibrator on the N5.
The previous one I couldn't feel in my pocket when someone rang e.t.c.
This one actually feels faster for me.
Using Franco Kernel (kernels can change vibration's function but I didn't bother to check whether any commits were made to change this so just including it anyway.)

Same here. The N5 vibrator feels elasticy like the xperias. Much nicer feel for me. Whenever I used the missuses xperia t, I was always disappointed by the S3's feel.
I agree the s3's has a heavier feeling though, but I prefer this

I switched back to my S4 for a day yesterday and the vibrator is really strong. It feels like my Sonicare toothbrush. I had to lower the intensity since I'm now so accustomed to the N5. I agree i the N5 does sound anemic (or even like farting) at times but I'm starting to not notice it anymore. My only issue is that on some surfaces it yields a weird vibration noise I think because the motor is mounted on the cover. I'm curious how a new kernel cleans up the sound.
I'm fine with the motor. I do think the slow spin up time can make it seem like it's a cheap, crappy motor. I'm starting to prefer it.

I think the frequency at which the S3 vibrated was a lot faster and had a shorter duration, making it feel "Crisp" I miss that.

Kernels can control the vibrator. Speed, intensity etc - which would change the sound as a bi-product

Right there. The S3s vibrations felt slightly slower but powerful while this feels elastic, light perhaps tickly and very fast.
I have an Xperia Play which I compared with. Almost same feeling.
(But the Play's vibrator vibrates very strong if it goes max power, but on lower vibration power it vibrates just like my N5)

Can turn it up on the nexus 5 with faux kernel. It goes pretty mental.
I generally have it on Vibrate most of the day, and the N5 vibration never catches my attention so I depend more on lightflow to see if i need to check my screen. might have to flash the kernel and see if I can make it more usable

Question about the screen

Hey guys, I have a quick question. I bought the N5 last week on Monday and have been through three devices with dirt under the screen/dead pixels. The fourth one sent to me finally seems to be working and in perfect condition, including vibration which was also messed up on the 2nd one. The question is... Is it normal to see the horizontal lines of the pixels while on a white background or any sort of light colored background? Just trying to ensure I don't have another messed up device. Thanks!
::EDIT::
Maybe it isn't pixels... Is it the digitizer?
There is a grid you will see if you angle the screen (whilst off) under light. Have a look shining light onto it at different angles. If this is the same as you are seeing, then yeah that's normal

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're just seeing the digitizer. It's really faint so it doesn't bother me, but I could see someone not liking it.

Samsung needs to get rid of the ambient light sensor used by always on display.

always on display is a great tool. but it isn't nearly as effective when it is displayed so dimly. the ambient light sensor of this app is terrible. it is almost impossible to see most of the time. i think that samsung needs to give us a setting to use adaptive sensor, 50% or 100% on. this would benefit everyone. it is NOT bright enough to bother anyone trying to go to sleep, when it is on its brightest. but it is sharp and easy to see when it is on its brightest. so please samsung, people want the ability to make decisions about these kinds of things. allow us a few brightness choices for the always on display.
Totally agree! I've found it is useless for me especially at night with how dim it is.

I like it when its dim most of the time, and bow bright it goes when i look at it outside to see the clock without turnin on the screen. My issue is its not reliable. Sometimes it doesnt turn off when i put it in my pocket, or it turns off in my pocket but when i take it out it doesnt turn on ?? Anyone with this issue ?? Im on .22 version.
I like how dim it is now. I put my phone on a wireless charger stand on my desk and it was annoying see it bright and bouncing around so I stopped using then.
I beg to differ.... as I actually prefer it to be as dim as possible - especially in a dark room.
Remember what the purpose it is for...
That being said, I do agree with the OP for wanting it to be adjustable - it should be!

I feel the same. Someone above said it was especially hard to see at night, but that makes no sense as it is perfectly visible at night.
If you applied the update, and want to get rid of the dimmer display, just go into the Application Manager and delete AOD. That will uninstall the update and revert to the original version.

To be fair, I usually would use it at night. I don't have the best vision and usually do want it a bit brighter than most would.
I guess I should have clarified that - for my case I commented on nighttime viewing since that's where I usually had it enabled. It really is something that needs to be adjustable
