I love the shield so far, its by far my most favorite android device out of all the ones Ive owned in the past and currently own. Ive notived the dpad makes some quite loud clicking noises, especially the up button. I was curious how many others have this problem as well. If its only affecting a few devices im thinking about sending it in as its actually woke my wife up a few times (shes a light sleeper) when im gaming in bed. Thanks guys.

There was a pretty large thread on the Nvidia forums about this. Their engineering team basically has told support that the d-pad clicking issue affecting some devices is fine, and won't affect the longevity of the device. *grrr*.
Mine had a really bad clicking noise, hitting up, and a quieter but still annoying click hitting right. It made me completely not want to use it. I pushed the issue with the online chat support people, and they overnighted me a replacement with a return label.

Haha, I guess that bit of info will be helpful!
No, the issue was not there with the replacement. My replacement is perfect. Nvidia also reached out to me after I received the replacement to make sure I was happy. I was blown away with the customer service after the initial frustrations.
I had this issue and they shipped me a replacement with the same issue. The unit was also marked up and looked used. I sent it back and they send a 2nd unit. The 2nd unit was no better. I gave up after this and am just dealing with a noisy d-pad. Basically I just don't use the d-pad unless I have too.

Hello all,
I have one short question: with my keyboard closed, I have a little movement in the corners when i push it around. Is that normal or not?
Thank you.
Apparently so...
Iv not got the phone yet but theres been allot of talk about it.
I have it too, so I suppose it's 'normal'.

It's not "normal" to say this, but I'm glad that there is nothing wrong only with my device. I was alredy thinking about sending it back for service...
Its a slider mechanism - if it didnt have any play then some would break!! Manufacturing tolerences etc need to be taken into account. A samll amount of play is fine.

I've discussed this already with the HTC service and they told me to send the unit to them. They will change sliding mechanism. My phone is currently in the service with this "feature" :-(
I hope they will fix it. Such a good phone, but this really looks like manufacturing problem.
anyone knows if they are going to release a "fixed" version?
How much is a little movement, my TP moves around but not to the point I would say it's an issue

1-3 millimeters, depends on the pressure.
When you press the volume button on the left side, it rolls about 1-2mm. When you press it more, it is about 3 mm. I guess this is too much.
Official statement is that some kind of allowance is normal and ok, but there is no strict direction from HTC - public statement.
Well if they consider this to be normal, I think there won't be any "fixed" version available, but as you know, all manufacturers make improvements during the time. So maybe ...
Okay thanks
Like I say it's currently not an issue, but will keep an eye on it
I realize this is an old thread, but I wanted to resurface the issue. I've had a new Fuze for the past few months, that had very little 'play' when pressing buttons.
I recently did a warranty exchange and the refurb wobbled considerably more than the original phone. A little bit of wobbling is expected, but it was downright unbearable to use, and I have since asked for a replacement.
Much like a poster in this thread, I would do something as simple as hit the volume up button and the rest of the phone would move around significantly. This is not normal, in my opinion!
First post, I have searched but didn't find anything on this in the forum. So I received my Fuze yesterday via mail from AT&T and I have been playing with it and it is a great device. I have noticed that on my Fuze the hard buttons on the bottom seem to move around on the right hand side as if they were loosely connected. I have made a youtube video to show this movement and I am wondering if this is normal for the Fuze/Touch Pro or if mine may be defective. Thanks for any help in advance and I will certainly be using this forum for lots, good community you have here.

16 views and noone can verify if their Fuze also has loose keys on the bottom? I thought this one would surely get a quick response since it is so simple.
I just want to know if I should not worry about it or if I should consider sending it back before I start to get into flashing ROMs and whatnot. It very well could be that this is just the way it was designed but I have no idea.
Mine also does it. Never payed attention until you pointed it out. Not too worried about it though.
I'm also not too worried about it myself but just wondering if that is something standard with the device or if only some of them do it? Thanks for the response.
This is certainly faulty. My TP keys move a little bit, but not that much. I am sure yours is buggy. But... I think it is not getting worse because the movement is limited by the frame
My TyTNII/TIlt did the same thing and HTC said this was normal. I just hope they don't decide to make a car, the wheels would fall off any they would tell you it was normal.
I did end up sending a message to HTC to see what they had to say. I'll inform if i get a response.
I've had 4 units, all of them did it but one, and that one had a pad piece that was such a tight fit that it rubbed on the bottom of the screen when you pressed the home or back button. They all seem to be slightly different sizes.
When you buy HTC, don't examine too closely or you'll always be disappointed.

My HTC Fuze (AT&T) does not have loose key on the bottom.
my Fuze is rock solid. It is a perfect fit, sturdy, and held in place.
Looks like your touchpad has a broken screw hole or missing a screw entirely. I definatly wouldn't be satisified with that.
I have checked 2 and both had the loose button panel
HTC responded with:
Thank you for sending your email inquiry about your device.
I understand you have an HTC Fuze with AT&T service and your device may have loose buttons on the right side. I know that this situation can be frustrating when your device buttons do not perform the way you expect. If you suspect the buttons are loose, you should contact AT&T about this issue. They maybe able to exchange or replace the device for you.
Robert, I hope we have answered your question in detail. Feel free to contact us again if you have any further questions.

So I went to the AT&T Store to talk to one of them and to check the phone there and that display phone had the loose buttons. I am going to try to check the rest of the stores. I am going to hang onto mine as it really isnt an issue and I still have the warranty if something goes wrong. Still I would like to get this poll filled out as it is now an interesting thing to me.
I bought mine on 1/27 and it is loose on the right side too
I went through three Fuzes for various different problems. The one I have now has an uneven lower button area...the left side facing up is higher than the right which causes a sharp corner. I was just happy it wasnt worse. If you compare the build quality to the sprint's touch pro there is no comparison, the sprint version is solid, every one I've handled has felt well built and had no problems like this.
Mine does exactly the same, had it for a week, but only noticed it yesterday. Probably not quite as bad as the video tho....
My Kaiser also does it but i'm not worried out that as the button pad is 'encapsulated' by the cover and doesn't any where near like the TP. The other thing I'm not too keen on is the hard qwerty keyboard doesn't feel as robust as my kaiser one either.
This is must disconcerting as I look after my phones really well.....

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914049
those are some good thought about it
my only downfall to the phone is the whole China made screen deal.
1) Get it at Best Buy- $100 with renewal/add a line/upgrade/new contract.
2) Test the screen right in front of them. They'll let you do it. Run dmesg and check line 13-14 for panel type. =2 means you're good. =1 means exchange.
3) Vigorously test the data connection. I feel like some of them have baseband problems switching from 4G to Edge and back to 4G.
4) Check the left side of the phone above the triple charging prods for a gap between the front plate and the side. The first two I opened had a slight gap and coincidentally, antenna problems.
5) As soon as you get home, check the bottom left and bottom right corner for LCD bleeding. (Brighter and coming out of the glass on bottom corners)
This phone is powerful, spectacular, strong and fast. The hardware on it is what the Nexus S should've been but the Quality Control on it is atrociously bad. I'm on my second and I'm exchanging it today because of LCD bleeding. It's getting rather tiresome.
I'm a stone's throw away from going Verizon iPhone on February 10th.
Oh I also wanted to know how's the audio on this phone is. I'm coming from the Xperia X10 & that didn't have the best media audio, I listen to music off of my phone alot

Get Power Amp, its great if you want an outstanding music player. Also if you are going to get this phone on contract go this weekend you can get it for free on a 2 year contract.
I also think this is a great phone, but as others have stated, the quality control is bad and so finding the elusive perfect MT4G is a struggle, to say the least. I have exchanged my phone five times, four of which had good displays but other minor issues. I ended up having to compromise on the small things, such as light leaks around the buttons. All of the MT4G I've received have had some degree of light leaks around the buttons. To me, I gave up on getting one that's 100% without them, but as long as it's not where so much light leaking that it's easily noticeable, you should be okay.
Apart from that, it's a fantastic phone and I am much happier with it than I was my previous phone, the Vibrant

Is there something special you need to do to see that? I ran dmesg on Terminal Emulator on my phone, looked at the output several times and even emailed it to myself to make sure, nowhere in the list of output is the word "panel". I'm a bit baffled.
dmesg buffers wrap. Reboot and look again.

Get this phone you won't regret it. I miss mines. Screen broke on it. You won't regret it especially with cm 7 installed. As for the next phone I'm getting the lg optimus 2xx and the gslate when they are released.
I just got this TF brand new today from Fry's and the volume rocker is just a bit flimsy. If I gently tap it, it easily moves. The up and down do indeed work but I'm wondering if this might become and issue later or if that's just how they are.
That's just how they are. Mine are like that too.
Try shaking your TF, you will hear noise created by the volume keys.
Dude same here, guess Asus let that one go lose lolz!
I had the same issue with a new tf101 that I purchased a week or so ago. I returned it to Best Buy and got a new one, no problems at all with the volume keys.
why do people shop at best buy?
Hrmmm... Well i just did the latest ICS update and rooted, installed CWM and backed everything up, etc. The question is should i go through the hassle of exchanging it and possibly getting another one like this or just hang tight? Guess only i can answer that.

Exchange it. I can see it bugs you enough to post about it! !! For your peace of mind, I urge you to exchange..........I know if I had a thing like that, it would prey on my mind and drive me bonkers. There is no reason to accept anything less.
I got my screen fixed by Asus for screen back light bleeding (have you checked that).
Now I have a lot of dust getting BEHIND my back camera lens cover.........sending out to Asus again!! The build quality is not very tight. But it still remains the most popular Android tab, and has the best resale value.
Good luck !!
EDIT: PLEASE, go back to stock if you can to avoid unecessary questions !
Had mine for six months. Always been like that.
I got mine yesterday, and the volume button is indeed a bit loose.
Nothing I care about though.
As far as Ive read the TF101 isnt known for its excellent build quality
I recently got a gs4g and I've noticed two things, 1. there's a ray of light that bleeds from the home button and 2. the menu button likes to press itself once in a while.
I was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems and what their experience was like doing a return through tmo or samsung. Apparently tmo wants me to pay shipping, they won't send me a replacement first (even if I temporarily pay full price), and it will take 3 to 4 weeks. Samsung will pay for shipping, but they take just as long, don't guarantee anything, and at best send me a refurb back (no replacements).
These 2 problems are surprisingly minor in terms of usability (especially the menu button thing), so I've just kept the phone and it hasn't really pissed me off too much yet. What do you think I should do?
BTW this phone is out of the 20 day return period, I noticed the menu thing on like day 22.

Take that thing back to the TMOB store and tell them you want a new one. When they tell you that it's passed the grace period start to get a little loud. Keep getting louder until they either replace it for you or you are asked to leave by a security guard.
I was under the impression that the stores are separate entities from online sales with different prices and procedures. Has anyone taken a phone back to the store that was bought online? I have a feeling they'd tell me they couldn't do anything and to ship it back.
Check that it is a "company store" and not a franchise.

"T-Mobile Store" is what you are looking for, not a "T-Mobile Preferred Retailer"
I just got an exchange from tmobile and have the exact same issue with the light pertruding from home button, I don't have issue with menu button though. I noticed this on day one. But another issue I received with phone is if i shake or tap the phone I can feel the vibrator (its very faint but I can feel it) I even checked my old device to see if it did the same or if I was just crazy, and wouldn't you know it did not do it. I called tmobile and told them about it and of course got disconnected in middle of conversation, so rather than going through the issue with another rep (annoying) I am just dealing with it. Was thinking it was a bad lcd or could maybe cause it to fail prematurely that's why I called. Now that I see someone else has same light issue I think I'm gonna call them back

Yeah I think mine has that vibrator issue too, but I thought it was just natural vibration since the thing is so thin. That really doesn't bother me at all. It's amazing how benign these problems are, but I'd at least like to get that menu button fixed if it wasn't such a hassle.
I too have the home button light issue but not the menu button issue. And I can also feel it vibrate when I tap it a little. It never bothered me so I left it alone. I've had the phone for over a year and a half already and nothing seems to be malfunctioning.

Update: They *just* stopped selling this phone (possibly due to Apple's lawsuit), so t-mobile won't replace it anymore. The best they can do is the exhibit 4g (no thanks). I'm glad I snatched it when I did, just wish I noticed this problem sooner. I think I'm going to send it to Samsung for refurb.

Follow up: So I sent the phone back to Samsung for repairs. I told the guy on the phone about the menu button problem in great detail and he sent me an email with return info etc. I receive an email a few days after they receive it that basically says they ran some standard tests and couldn't determine that anything is wrong with it so please provide them more info. It didn't say how to provide them with more info so I just replied to the email with a very detailed description of how to reproduce the problem (basically just leave the phone on the table with the screen on). They send me back the phone, un-repaired, with a note about how nothing is wrong with it.
Moral of the story: Do not buy any Samsung product without also buying an extended warranty from the retailer. Samsung does not honor their warranty when it comes to intermittent problems that are not immediately reproducable.
