[Q] Nexus 5 wifi call and text - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. I just ordered my Nexus 5 today and it says that it is leaving the warehouse on December 3rd. I have a Google Voice number set up but can someone help me on how I will be able to text and call over WiFi because I will not be getting a plan for this phone just yet. Can I just use an app like pinger or something and text using my google voice number? and then use an app like groove IP or talkatone and call using my google voice number?

Yes WiFi only is OK. Just do airplane on Wi-Fi on else the cellular antenna will drain your battery. Texting: pinger, voice, groove plus other will work. Voice: groove will work. Video calls: tango, wechat:, viber, hangouts will work

is texting free on Google Voice?

google voice app offers free VoIP, but what about ToIP lol if there is such a thing (text over ip haha). is texting free over google voice? and can it be done with your carrier number, or does it have to be done with your google voice number?
texting works
Texting with voice works great. I do with my tablet and the PC. I like to use a full keyboard. So I prefer the PC when I am home. My mom has text plus on her ipad and I text to her with gvoice. If you use gvnotifier it will work in your tray. Good luck

Oh yeah I don't even have a carrier number. Or a phone ..just the hptouchpad
but does it count for your minutes? i like google voice, because voip doesnt use any of your minutes, does it do the same for texts?
It counts as data in your plan but not towards your text plan
I think you got some misunderstand here.
Google voice is not VOIP, it is a forwarding service that provide you with a number to use for any phone you have. When you call someone with GV, Google server call you and that person at the same time, then connect you two, which mean you are using your minutes plan. But if you have access to a web browser on a computer, you can use Gmail to call phone or other Gmail user - that is VOIP (it is free for now, but they will start to charge for the service)
But texting with Google voice is free as long as you have internet access (wifi or data plan). The person who receive it with a normal phone number would have to pay for text plan however
Groove IP
Don't forget groove IP. with the voice app , it will use the data connection.. wifi preferred text and with groove ip you can make phone calls using data voip no phone minutes.
Hey guys I was wondering if groove ip with GV is worth setting up since I have heard that the call quality is bad. Is it actually bad?

It's going to depend on your connection and settings.
You can download the free version and just try it out - you don't have to commit to it.
I really need GV
I feel like I'm missing out on Google Voice. It makes sense to use since I'm on unlimited data, but the day I'm off it...I'll probably curse it.
How much data do you all usually use per month with doing texting/voice?

It is done from the GV number. and only uses your data if you are using a GV app or your pc
groove ip and GV question
(need info since I don't know much about this)
so i currently have an at&t prepaid number and I have ordered a new t-mobile prepaid sim. If I i port the google voice to my current at&t number but replace the sim with the new t-mobile sim and leave this number as it is, will I still be able to make calls over GV with my at&t number (using the new sim) or will this not work at all?
Nexus4
Texting via GVoice is free, however media messages such as pictures won't work.

Short codes can be hit or miss, too.

Dialing using Google Voice

This might be a stupid question, but here's what I want to do:
I want to call certain domestic numbers using my Google voice number, but I don't want to choose between GV or stock dialer every time I make calls, nor do I want to use GV for all calls. Most of the time when I call I still want to use the stock dialer.
Unfortunately, it seems that the GV app only give me these 2 options for domestic calls. Is it possible to dial directly from GV app using GV number? On iPhone I can just open GV app and there's a dialer I could use. On Android (tried Galaxy Nexus and Razr) there seems to be no such choice.
If I set it to "ask me everytime", it will made direct dial less inconvenient, especially while driving (with bluetooth), since you will have to press one more time to choose whether GV will be used.
Maybe I am missing something? If this is how things should work, then GV integration on Android device is not good for everyone. There should be a choice to use the GV dialer.
use Vlingo
Vlingo is a good voice app

vlingo is also hands free

Google voice minutes

I have had a GV account for a good while but never used it...
And I'm on the $30 T-mobile monthly 4G with 100 Minutes and I've not really been able to make calls since, when I do they will last a few hours...
In an attempt to fix this and talk to random people via SMS I downloaded the GV app.
BUT after searching, Google voice on a mobile device uses Airtime and NOT data as a VoIP?
I have not found a clear answer *that is post 2012.
So, is google Voice on Android VoIP or is something like GrooVe IP required for VoIP calls?

[Q] Groove IP: Configuring incoming calls on wifi

I have installed Groove IP and Google Talk on my LG Optimus V. I am trying to figure out how to get incoming calls to a wifi device with no cell phone number. This is in preparation to moving to a tablet with just wifi. I was trying to play around with google voice and groove IP to see how thye worked before ditching my OV cell plan and moving to a tablet.
I have configured google voice so that google chat is checked in the settings. Outgoing calls via Groove IP work as advertised. However, calling my Google Voice number dumps the caller into the google voice mail, requesting the google voice pin.
I have double-checked my GV account and no other number is set as a forwarding number. The only thing checked is google chat and the google voice account is the same as that logged into for Groove IP.
How do I configure Groove IP and GV to allow incoming calls over wifi with no forwarding cell phone number (which would be the scenario I would have if I had this working on a tablet)?
Thanks!
Don't have a clue what happened, but got up this morning and incoming calls to my GV number come into my phone via Groove IP as advertised.

T-mobile Wifi Calling Work around..

This is my work around for t-mobile calling for non-t-mobile branded phones or t-mobile phones with customized ROMs/ iphone 5 and earlier iphone versions.
Things you need:
1. Andriod phones with customized ROMs/ non-T-Mobile branded Android phones / iphone 5 and earlier iphone versions.
2. T-Mobile service/ working T-mobile SIM card of the phone above.
3. Gmail account with activated Google Voice number.
4. Google Hangouts App
5. Google Hangouts Dialer App (only for Android, IOS has the dialer already merged to the Hangout app by default)
6. Off course WIFI connection.
7. a compurer
Okay let's start.
1. Download the Google Hangout and Google Hangout dialer on your android/ only google Hangout App to IOS.
2. Log in your google Voice/Gmail account in the Hangout App.
3. Go to Hangout setting, press on your email add, go to google voice (within the setting) and and enable/check "Incoming phone calls".
4. Now you have to activate CF NRC (Call Forwarding if Not Reachable) for your T-Mobile number. This will forward your incoming calls when you are not reachable only. We will be forwarding your incoming call to your Google Voice number. (Callforwarding will consume your minutes if you do not have unlimited voice minutes). From your phone, go to the native phone dialer (not the Hangout Dialer) and dial **62*YOURGOOGLEVOICENUMBER# then send.
-- note- to deactivate CF NRC if you change your mind go to native dialer and dial ##62# then send
5. Now go to a computer and log in to your Google Voice account, go to setting and uncheck "calls forward to" your T-mobile phone number. If you do not do this, your incoming call will go into an unending loop of voicemail forwarding and your incoming voice call will not ring to your Hangout/Google voice number.
6. Now you can receive you incoming voice call via hangout. Unfortunately, you will use your free outgoing voice calls via hangout only if you do not have a T-Mobile signal.
Tip:
When I do not have a good T-Mobile signal and have a WIFI connection, I put my phone to Airplane Mode and turn on WIFI connection after so that you battery will not die quick. You can still receive your phone call and make VOIP outgoing calls via your WIFI connection.
The moment you have T-Mobile signal, you should receive your incoming call normally since you will be "reachable" so you do not have disable the CF NRC.
Unfortunately this does not work on your text messages so I use my google voice Hangout text message which is also unlimited.
Enjoy.
Nicely done. I previously configured Google hangouts with the dialer but never thought of actually doing the Call Forwarding NRC on the T-Mo line. Clever.
Are you experiencing high CPU usage (like not able to even bring up the home screen in under 10 secs) when on a Google Hangouts dialer voice call? I've notice that on mine, and I've noticed considerable battery drain. I'm thinking this is just one of the trade offs, but wanted to see if others were experiencing this too.
Nicely done indeed! IMO T-Mobiles WIFI calling feature is a very useful feature. That is one reason I am reluctant to switch to a custom ROM. I'll have to check out your workaround and see if I like it. Another tool in the toolbox.
I've been looking for something like this, great work!!!
So basically, you are forwarding your T-mo calls to your GV account to receive your T-mo calls via wifi.
What about outgoing calls? When making calls over wifi, do you make calls via GV or T-mo? When you call someone over wifi, does it show your GV number or your T-mo number?
Your outgoing call will be by google hangout dialer app using your Google voice number (voip).
You will be using your Google voice number for outgoing on wifi. Not T-Mobile.
Nice. i will add this to my list. Thanks
vonage mobile app
Download the Vonage Mobile App, its free. Sign up then verify with the pin code texted to you. This will allow outgoing calls to show your T-Mobile (or any other carriers) outgoing number on caller ID.
