[Q] Groove IP: Configuring incoming calls on wifi - General Questions and Answers

I have installed Groove IP and Google Talk on my LG Optimus V. I am trying to figure out how to get incoming calls to a wifi device with no cell phone number. This is in preparation to moving to a tablet with just wifi. I was trying to play around with google voice and groove IP to see how thye worked before ditching my OV cell plan and moving to a tablet.
I have configured google voice so that google chat is checked in the settings. Outgoing calls via Groove IP work as advertised. However, calling my Google Voice number dumps the caller into the google voice mail, requesting the google voice pin.
I have double-checked my GV account and no other number is set as a forwarding number. The only thing checked is google chat and the google voice account is the same as that logged into for Groove IP.
How do I configure Groove IP and GV to allow incoming calls over wifi with no forwarding cell phone number (which would be the scenario I would have if I had this working on a tablet)?

Don't have a clue what happened, but got up this morning and incoming calls to my GV number come into my phone via Groove IP as advertised.

[Q] SIPdroid and Captivate

hey all,
i have a Captivate with no SIM card (only WIFI connectivity). i downloaded SIPdroid from the market and created a PBXes.com account.
i manually created an extension and trunk and configured inbound and outbound routing to access my iptel.org account. the iptel.org account makes use of my google voice number.
i get a green connection light for SIPdroid but when i place a call i only get echo on the line and a perpetual SIPdroid dialing screen. no ringtone, no answer, no ring on the other side.
any help with troubleshooting is much appreciated as im bummed out and all out of ideas right now. amidoingitrite in terms of sipdroid>pbxes>iptel>voice? thanks.
I believe you have to use the browser to initiate the call or an app such as Google Voice Callback.
Do you have your google voice number setup to forward to your sip number?

Hey guys I’ve been looking for a good VoIP caller for my phone that uses my sprint number for a while now, and I finally found one and I would like to share it with everyone

It is a paid app, I found it on the market and I believe it wasn’t any more than 5 dollars.
set up:
I integrated Google voice on my account keeping my sprint number
I then downloaded Google voice on my phone and set it all up.
Then I downloaded groove ip and signed in.
you have options on when to use groove ip.
i have it auto start and set to ask when placing a call.
there is no battery drain when on standby.
obviously it uses some battery when placing or receiving calls
ive used it for a few days now, and i love it.
texts also work with the google voice app
Now you can use my phone even if you don’t have service as long as there is wifi !!
What about mms? I have Grooveip as well, but I'm hesitant to port my number completely to Voice. I use Voice for the voicemail and voip only... I use my Sprint number for everyday calling to other cells and sms/mms
Mms doesn't work on just WiFi, but is does on the cell network. I have no problems with it at all. Everything works the same for me. I also installed the voice app and grooveIP on my tablet and I can now use that as a spare phone at home. I still have to set it up online to ring the tablet tho

Groove IP-How to direct incoming calls to to it?

Hey guys,
About Groove IP. How on Earth do I program it so that calls to my TMO number will automatically be forwarded to my Google Voice number? I can make outbound calls using Groove IP with no issues as I just access and call via the app directly. But it seems to me incoming calls just go straight to my phone. I don't use minutes too often, but I'd like to save my monthly 100 minute allotment if possible!
In case anyone asks, yes, I have call-forwarding set to Google Chat and I've unchecked the box next to my cell #.
Check your individual contacts and group settings
If I am reading your post correctly, it sounds like you pretty much have the basic settings correct. Groove IP works via Google Talk so it is important that you have added Google Talk as a "phone" on the "Phones" tab in the Google Voice setup via their web interface. It sounds like you have done that though. Since you do not want calls to your GV number to forward to your cell phones number, you need to ensure that you have unchecked the box next to your cell phone entry on that same "Phones" setup page (if you leave the receive text messages and voicemail notification boxes checked, those two things will still work even if you have unchecked the phone for voice forwarding). Once again, it sounds like you have already done this.
I have found that if both Google Talk and the cell phone number are set to forward, the cell phone number will always start ringing before Groove IP starts ringing. Groove IP usually starts ringing around the 3rd ring of the cell phone number. If you are answering your phone on the first few rings, you may not know if Groove IP is really ringings through or not. This does not solve the problem of why your cell phone number is ringing if you have forwarding to it shut off but you might want to do a test call to your GV number and let it ring while watching the display on your cell. If it is ringing through to your cell's number, a screen displaying the caller ID and options to answer the stock dialer should appear. If Groove IP is properly forwaarding to Goole Talk, the the Groove IP screen should come up over the stock caller ID screen somewhere around or after the third ring of your actual cell phone number. If Groove IP does eventually forward through then you know that the Google Talk forwarding is working and you then just need to solve the cell phone forwarding issue. If Groove IP does not forward via Google Talk, there are several things you need to check.....
Groove IP works by default over WiFi but can also use your 3G/4G network if you are not connected to WiFi. That ability is not enabled by default though so you need to go into the Groove IP settings on your cell phone and check the box allowing 3G/4G calling. This sounds like a pretty obvious thing to setup properly but you would be surprised at just how many people overlook that setting.
If that is setup properly and Groove IP is still not ringing through to your cell phone via Google Talk, then you will need to go into the Google Voice settings via the Google Voice webpage and check the settings for your "Groups" (if you have contacts assigned to groups). All of the groups have individual settings for what phones the contacts assigned to that group will ring on. These settings will override the settings on the "Phones" tab in the main settings panel. If Google Talk is not checked for you groups, that will be a problem. You may also want to uncheck your cell phone in the group settings.
You will also need to check how you have each contact setup. If you click on the checkbox next to a contacts name the far right panel will display the information entered for that contact. At the bottom of this there is a link you can click to "Edit Google Voice Settings". Clicking that link will take you to the individual GV settings for that contact. If you have your contacts assigned to groups, then ideally each contact within this individual settings display should be getting their settings from their group assignment. There is a setting at the very top of this page Where you can choose the group you want to use the settings from for that contact. The individual contact will then get thier settings from the group. This can be overriden though and the individual contact settings will override both the group and main settings in Google Voice. Under these individual contact settings there is an area where it lists what to do "When this contact calls you" If it is using the group settings to determine what phones to forward to it will say "Use "Group Name" Phones" in this area and there will also be an edit link next to that. If you click on the edit link, individual entries and checkboxes for the phones you have setup in GV will appear. If the contact(s) has not been assigned to a group then these entries and the boxes to chose them will be there by default. If you do have groups assigned, chosing these individual entries will override the group settings for the phones to ring on. How you want to gio about setting all of that up is really up to you. Groups, no groups or groups for everyone but a few important contacts also have individual phone settings that override their group membership? It does not really matter as long as you have ensured that Google Talk is properly setup in these areas and that your cell phone is not set to forward to its number.
If all of this is properly setup then Groove IP should ring on your cell phone. If your cells number is still forwarding even though it is unchecked throughout the Google Voice settings, try temporarily deleting your cell phone for the Google Voice settings altoghther. Then go ahead and call your GV number and ensure the Google Talk is ringing through to Groove IP on your call. If all of this works, then go ahead and add your cell phone back to the list of phones in Google Voice. You will probably have to ensure the it is not checked by default in the group and contact settings after adding it back.
If your cell number is still ringing through and Groove IP is not ringing (and you are not attached to WiFi), look at your cell phone to see what type of data connection you currently have. If you are currently in a bad area for reception you may not have a 3G or 4G connection. It might say 1G in your notification area. Groove IP needs either WiFi, 3G or 4G and if you do not have any of those currently connected, Groove IP will not work. The Groove IP icon in the notifiaction area will be red instead of green if you do not have a good enough connection for Groove IP to work.
If all of that is good though and all of your settings have been verified as correct and it still does not work, then I have no idea what might be causing the problem. If that is the case you may want to send an e-mail to the Grrove IP developers to see if there are any known issues with your cell phone or if they have any other suggestions.

I've e-mailed the developers. Someone on a different forum has told me that the answer is no, GrooveIP can only receive calls made to GV #s.
I mis-understood what you were asking. You can make your gv number ring on your cell but if your cell number is dialed you cannot make that number utilize GGroove IP. The trick is to only give out your gv number and to those people that already have your cell number, just tell them to utilize your gv number from now on.
The best solution I've found to save minutes using the same setup is to let the call go to voicemail and then call the person back...may not be the best, but it works.

Yeah, I've been doing that on and off. Only problem is both Groove IP and Skype (wasted $10 just to test the damn thing out!) are both spotty and too unpredictable.

i know this is an old forum
but what i also use is the Vonage app...when Groove is being crappy i let it go to voicemail and call back using the Vonage app...it works for me

I'd try Groove (a free or paid app). Uses voip, so you need data. The free version uses WiFi, while the paid version can use 3G. Also, you need a Google voice number for this to work.
I use a sip account thru pbxes.org linked to a us number thru ipkall.com along with sipdroid, voice+ and google voice. Totaly free incomimg and outgoing us calls thru your google voice number. I know it sounds complicated, and kind of is but its worth it in the end.
Once setup when you dial a number voice plus catches the call and asks whether to use regular phone or a "callback" from google voice. So you select callback which sends the info thru the net to google voice who then calls your free sip number. You answer and are automaticly connected to the number you dialed for free. Then on the google voice settings page you have your gv number forwarded to your free sip number and all incoming calls are free.
On a side note stock roms and probably most custom roms do not allow sip over 3g by default. You must edit the framework-res.apk file to allow it.

T-mobile Wifi Calling Work around..

This is my work around for t-mobile calling for non-t-mobile branded phones or t-mobile phones with customized ROMs/ iphone 5 and earlier iphone versions.
Things you need:
1. Andriod phones with customized ROMs/ non-T-Mobile branded Android phones / iphone 5 and earlier iphone versions.
2. T-Mobile service/ working T-mobile SIM card of the phone above.
3. Gmail account with activated Google Voice number.
4. Google Hangouts App
5. Google Hangouts Dialer App (only for Android, IOS has the dialer already merged to the Hangout app by default)
6. Off course WIFI connection.
7. a compurer
Okay let's start.
1. Download the Google Hangout and Google Hangout dialer on your android/ only google Hangout App to IOS.
2. Log in your google Voice/Gmail account in the Hangout App.
3. Go to Hangout setting, press on your email add, go to google voice (within the setting) and and enable/check "Incoming phone calls".
4. Now you have to activate CF NRC (Call Forwarding if Not Reachable) for your T-Mobile number. This will forward your incoming calls when you are not reachable only. We will be forwarding your incoming call to your Google Voice number. (Callforwarding will consume your minutes if you do not have unlimited voice minutes). From your phone, go to the native phone dialer (not the Hangout Dialer) and dial **62*YOURGOOGLEVOICENUMBER# then send.
-- note- to deactivate CF NRC if you change your mind go to native dialer and dial ##62# then send
5. Now go to a computer and log in to your Google Voice account, go to setting and uncheck "calls forward to" your T-mobile phone number. If you do not do this, your incoming call will go into an unending loop of voicemail forwarding and your incoming voice call will not ring to your Hangout/Google voice number.
6. Now you can receive you incoming voice call via hangout. Unfortunately, you will use your free outgoing voice calls via hangout only if you do not have a T-Mobile signal.
Tip:
When I do not have a good T-Mobile signal and have a WIFI connection, I put my phone to Airplane Mode and turn on WIFI connection after so that you battery will not die quick. You can still receive your phone call and make VOIP outgoing calls via your WIFI connection.
The moment you have T-Mobile signal, you should receive your incoming call normally since you will be "reachable" so you do not have disable the CF NRC.
Unfortunately this does not work on your text messages so I use my google voice Hangout text message which is also unlimited.

Nicely done. I previously configured Google hangouts with the dialer but never thought of actually doing the Call Forwarding NRC on the T-Mo line. Clever.
Are you experiencing high CPU usage (like not able to even bring up the home screen in under 10 secs) when on a Google Hangouts dialer voice call? I've notice that on mine, and I've noticed considerable battery drain. I'm thinking this is just one of the trade offs, but wanted to see if others were experiencing this too.
Nicely done indeed! IMO T-Mobiles WIFI calling feature is a very useful feature. That is one reason I am reluctant to switch to a custom ROM. I'll have to check out your workaround and see if I like it. Another tool in the toolbox.

So basically, you are forwarding your T-mo calls to your GV account to receive your T-mo calls via wifi.
What about outgoing calls? When making calls over wifi, do you make calls via GV or T-mo? When you call someone over wifi, does it show your GV number or your T-mo number?
Your outgoing call will be by google hangout dialer app using your Google voice number (voip).
You will be using your Google voice number for outgoing on wifi. Not T-Mobile.

vonage mobile app
Download the Vonage Mobile App, its free. Sign up then verify with the pin code texted to you. This will allow outgoing calls to show your T-Mobile (or any other carriers) outgoing number on caller ID.
