Canadian N5 users on Rogers question - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey fellow canuks (and all other knowledgeable) parties,
Been using my N5 for a few weeks now, and noticed that my Network icon never switches from H (im assuming that HSP+) to LTE.
Ive seen it switch from H to 3G but never to LTE.
I purchased my N5 through the Play store, and NOT rogers.
Are there any APN settings that i need to add for the rogers LTE band? Or is this normal behavior?
Please advise.
thanks

I assume you have an LTE enabled SIM card?

My N5 is from the play store and I'm on Rogers... LTE works out of the box.

I had the same issue as you did, and did the following:
Settings --> More... --> Mobile Networks --> Network Mode --> Access Point Names
Under Access Point Names, I have 4:
Rogers (rogers-core-appl1.apn)
Rogers LTE (ltemobile.apn)
Rogers Tethering (isp.apn)
Rogers WAP (internet.com)
It was selected on the first one (ROGERS - rogers-core-appl1.apn), and I manually changed it to ROGERS LTE.
Since then, I get E, H and LTE by my signal.
Be sure to do some speedtests with both Rogers and Rogers LTE.
Hope that helps.

[Q] Does Nexus S work in Canada on Fido network?

I was using my nexus s on Rogers network, and I thought, that since Fido is basically the same company as Rogers and Nexus S is an unlocked phone, my nexus s should have no problem working on Fido's network, and all I have to do is changing the SIM card.
The truth turned out to be, my nexus s, with a Fido SIM card inside, is ROAMing on Rogers network! I cannot see any carrier but Rogers if I go into the "network search" menu! Even if I checked the "only use 2g network" option!
I live in Montreal and I should have perfect Fido reception. My guess is that my nexus s may be secretly locked to Rogers network, and no matter what SIM card I put in it always, and only, finds Rogers network and connects to it, making the service become roaming if i use SIM card from other local carrier.
Is there any nexus s using Fido's network properly in Canada? or specifically in Montreal area?
Has anyone found a problem like this when doing a network switch?
it will work only as Voice
data will be EDGE only
Its currently asw 1700 / "t-mobile" only' therefore wind or mobilicity will get 3G.
Rogers Fido Bell & Telus use HSPA 850 1900 will not.
Is your phone *really* roaming on Rogers?
Fido is owned by Rogers, and as far as I know, they share the same network.
It could be that your Nexus S is just not displaying the network name "FIDO" and is displaying Rogers instead.
Wind Mobile, for instance, displays their network number on the Nexus S, but if you put the same chip on a Blackberry it will either show "Wind Home" or "Wind Away".

Yes. My Nexus S works fine with rogers. If I switch to a Fiso SIM card, it literally ROAMs on rogers network with a little "R" on top of the signal bar and ONLY finds rogers network in the "wireless" menu.
This is so weird.

It finds Rogers network and connects to it in EDGE. Even Fido and rogers use the same network/frequency/towers, it just can't see any network but Rogers.
Are your phones working well with Fido?

it doesn't matter, it still is on FIDO
i had an old Treo phones that did the exact same thing, because FIDO is not considered a real network in Canada as it's owned by ROGERS, so most of the time they get grouped together
but if you see their tower ID, you'll see they are on the correct tower
but it is a very tedious process to do that
regardless you will not get billed roaming as fido=rogers=fido=rogers=one company with 2 faces
My friend and I are both on Fido. We have older basic phones. I am on a basic plan. He is on older CityFido plan. Neither of us have data plan, voice only. His phone shows Rogers. Mine shows Fido (perhaps due to my SIM).
When I look at available networks in my phone, I only see Rogers. Fido no longer exists as a network. It is merely a cosmetic sub-brand of Rogers.
Fido and Rogers merged networks years ago; there is only one network: Rogers.
I hope this helps.

[Q] Disable 4g on samsung galaxy s2 i727r?

Hi there,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE (signed with Rogers) and I'm trying to figure out how to disable 4G on my phone and only use 3G. I've looked through some threads talking about changing the "Network mode" in the "Mobile network settings," but I haven't had any luck with that.
GSM/HSPA/LTE (Auto Mode)
GSM/HSPA (Auto Mode)
GSM Only
HSPA Only
Right now, I'm using GSM/HSPA (Auto Mode) but it still says I'm connected to 4G in the status bar. In GSM Only, it connects to the edge network (E) and in HSPA only, it will connect to 4G network. Anyone have any ideas of how to connect using 3G?
Also, I've noticed in my APN settings, I'm using the "ltemobile.apn" (the only APN setting I have listed). I don't have a LTE plan, so should this be the APN that I should be using? Since I'm not on a LTE plan, would I be charged more for using the "ltemobile.apn" APN?
Thanks
4g is 3g/HSPA. If you were able to get LTE, the 4g icon would change (as long as you aren't on a ROM that doesn't have LTE icons)
Is there any way to turn off 4G/LTE completely and just use 3G to conserve battery life? I don't own a Skyrocket but my friend does and has horrible batt life.
On home screen press menu button and go to phone settings
Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Network Mode
Here you can tell it to use edge/3g/lte or edge/3g or just edge or just 3g
Hopfully that is not my ROM that allows me to choose that. Using Sky Ice Cream Sandwich rom
It depends on the ROM. Stock won't do it and a number of custom roms I've used don't do it either, but I have seen some that appear to allow for that functionality. Do some research and find one you like.
"4G" is 3g (well hspa+) which is twice as fast as what 3g speeds were originally at (see 4, iphone) its more of a marketing thing. There won't be a 3g icon showing up with these roms. best bet is to choose gsm/hspa then it won't be looking for LTE.

HSPA is actually 3G. AT&T and Tmobile were calling it 4G because they had to come up with some marketing scheme to compete with WiMaxx and LTE. SO in short, AUTO HSPA... is effectively disabling your 4G.

Verizon M8 on At&t/Cricket

I have rooted and s-off. Used the guide to enable additional bands. I used NV values 65626 and could get LTE in some areas but not in others. I'm starting to think it's radio related. Any suggestions?

what bands, specifically, did you enable?
Bands 2, 4, 5 and 17. I'm located in the Raleigh Durham area of NC. When it was connected to LTE I used the LTE discovery app and confirmed the uplink and downlink freqs. 1900/2100 if memory serves me correctly.
Currently using the VZW M8 on Cricket. I'm getting HSDPA but no LTE.
But I have no complaints. Phone is awesome and mobile data is working flawlessly.
Yes it's radio related. Verizon and ATT do not use all the same frequencies and bands.

verizon to gpe?

Hi,
I tried to read any info about it. But I don't know....
Here is my theory: The Google Play edition (GPe) is open to any LTE channels. I know that you can turn the verizon M8 into GPe M8... (I don't know if the phone can operate on Verizon after all :S )
So hopefully that can work, but I NEVER TRIED IT!
So If some GURU can help us that would be grate. And also a "How to" -from the very beginning ( Stock rom, s-on, non rooted, etc) would be nice too.
Thank you
Ps.: I was only modifying Samsung, Sony, Motorola, Zte before. This HTC "magic" is totally new for me

You totally missed OP's point. He already enabled the require bands for AT&T LTE.

I am in Virginia. Right now using a stock Verizon M8 and I do get AT&T LTE signal( download speed is around 10M, upload is 7M. Phone info said the network is LTE).
I guess my area using band 4 for AT&T LTE.
I am considering enable band 17. If you are available, maybe you should share some thoughts of your Band-unlockin process and your LTE signal situation.
Thank you.

I went to an ATT store inquiring about moving from VZW. They said my M8 would NOT work on their network. Who can i contact at ATT to get the straight scoop and move? I am in Wilmington NC.
Very competitive Verizon MVNOs are starting to emerge, have you compared coverage in your area? I'm on ROK Mobile and it's freaking awesome.

Most of the ATT guys are clueless, not matter they are in store or over the phone. Just ignore them.
All you need is get an att nano sim card, put it in your verizon m8. Boom! You could text and call now!
And then you need to edit APN settings to get data working. Go to settings, Mobile data, Network settings, GCM/UMTS Options, Access point names, and add a new APN:
Name ATT Phone
APN phone
Proxy Not set
Port Not set
Username Not set
Password Not set
Server Not set
MMSC http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
Authentication Type None
APN type default,mms,supl,hipri
APN protocol IPv4
Bearer Unspecified
save this APN and select it to use. Wait 30 sec to 1 minutes, Boom, you would have H+ or 4G LTE depending your location. For most area you would get H+.
You don't even need to root !
im on edge slow slow slow
I get HSPA+ on my stock M8. My APN is "phone"
I have GoPhone account with AT&T and I get LTE in some areas, nothing done to my phone, stock Verizon m8, apn set to nxtgenphone , I get HSPA most of the time, but I do get LTE in some locations here

I did not miss the OPs point. Reread my post. he's trying to enable bands on a phone which radio does not support it. He asked if it was a radio issue. YEP.

Unlocked i727r for Mobilicity sim

I gave my girlfriend my S2 i727r I had laying around. She has a Mobilicity sim, so I flashed TWRP and installed the Blaze modem. I followed the guide from vincom. I set her APN to the Mobilicity settings I found on this site. I'm looking at the Network Operators section, and I can't find Mobilicity in the list. CDN Roaming, Wind, Telus, and Bell are the available options.
Is it safe to select one of these carriers (probably except CDN Roaming)?
Is there something I'm missing?
I'm in Toronto, if that helps
edit. I chose the automatic option just to see what will happen. Then, I just checked the About Device section, and it seems as though it is connected to Mobilicity. Data switches between HSPA and 3G. Is there a way to connect to 4G and LTE?

The 4G signal that the networks worldwide use are not the same, GSM 4G is not the same as CDMA 4G, also, some 4G devices in the past were not true 4G, they used Wimax which is not actual 4G. My point is, the 4G your network uses is probably a different signal type or its bands do not match the bands the device supports. Research the exact signal type and frequency bands that Verizon supports, then research what signal type and bands that your network supports.
Many times I've seen 4G CDMA devices used on other networks and 4G could never be made to work, they were stuck with 3G because the device did not support the 4G type their network uses.
Most devices on other networks but still have 4G can count themselves lucky.
Thanks for your reply,
I flashed this rom (CM13) ; http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...m-cyanogenmod-13-0-nightlies-verizon-t3269675
my provider is "Djezzy" , and i think its 4g LTE.

You "think", no, don't assume anything, even if your provider uses 4G LTE, if the bands/frequencies of your network are not supported by the device's hardware then it isn't going to work. As I said the first time, you need to do the research to see what bands and frequencies Verizon uses and then do the research to see what bands/frequencies your service provider uses. I mean find the actual values of Verizon's bands/frequencies and the actual values of your networks bands/frequencies, you need to compare them to see if the use the same bands/frequencies, not just whether its 4G or LTE or not. Do you understand what I'm saying?
Also, their may be radio/modem incompatibilities, the radio modem is part of the stock firmware that remains on the device, ROMs are just the system partition and not the whole operating system, software that is under the ROM is still the software the device came with or had before you flashed a custom ROM.
I DO NOT PROVIDE HELP IN PM, KEEP IT IN THE THREADS FOR EVERYONE TO SHARE
