Hi there,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE (signed with Rogers) and I'm trying to figure out how to disable 4G on my phone and only use 3G. I've looked through some threads talking about changing the "Network mode" in the "Mobile network settings," but I haven't had any luck with that.
GSM/HSPA/LTE (Auto Mode)
GSM/HSPA (Auto Mode)
GSM Only
HSPA Only
Right now, I'm using GSM/HSPA (Auto Mode) but it still says I'm connected to 4G in the status bar. In GSM Only, it connects to the edge network (E) and in HSPA only, it will connect to 4G network. Anyone have any ideas of how to connect using 3G?
Also, I've noticed in my APN settings, I'm using the "ltemobile.apn" (the only APN setting I have listed). I don't have a LTE plan, so should this be the APN that I should be using? Since I'm not on a LTE plan, would I be charged more for using the "ltemobile.apn" APN?
Thanks
4g is 3g/HSPA. If you were able to get LTE, the 4g icon would change (as long as you aren't on a ROM that doesn't have LTE icons)
Is there any way to turn off 4G/LTE completely and just use 3G to conserve battery life? I don't own a Skyrocket but my friend does and has horrible batt life.
On home screen press menu button and go to phone settings
Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Network Mode
Here you can tell it to use edge/3g/lte or edge/3g or just edge or just 3g
Hopfully that is not my ROM that allows me to choose that. Using Sky Ice Cream Sandwich rom
It depends on the ROM. Stock won't do it and a number of custom roms I've used don't do it either, but I have seen some that appear to allow for that functionality. Do some research and find one you like.
"4G" is 3g (well hspa+) which is twice as fast as what 3g speeds were originally at (see 4, iphone) its more of a marketing thing. There won't be a 3g icon showing up with these roms. best bet is to choose gsm/hspa then it won't be looking for LTE.

HSPA is actually 3G. AT&T and Tmobile were calling it 4G because they had to come up with some marketing scheme to compete with WiMaxx and LTE. SO in short, AUTO HSPA... is effectively disabling your 4G.

There is NO switch like that, if you want only 2G then simply set the phone to "GSM only" and it will only get the slow EDGE speeds regardless of what area you are in.
If you do not set the phone for GSM only then the phone will automatically switch to 3G/4G speeds if those speeds are available in whatever area you are in.
Whenever you are in a 3G/4G area you will see a little icon in your notification bar if you have not set the phone up for GSM Only.

but i can't to save changes. i choosed "WCDMA only" and after reconnecting were automatically connected to EDGE
please help
You're right... I tried to force GSM Only and failed.
Not sure why you would ever want to force WCDMA only. The phone will always prefer 3G over 2G.
I tried to force WCMA Only and failed.

The reason for doing that is if you are somewhere on the outer edge of a 3g/4g connection and it keeps jumping back and forth. All the signal jumping can kill a battery quicker.

When you go into the *#*#4636#*#* screen, select phone information and then hit menu. Select radio band and pick AUS. This locks my phone to 3g/4g.

How to Switch Samsung Infuse 4G i997 to 2G Edge Network. Turn off 3G/4G on Samsung In
Warning: This will work depending on where you’re at. If you’re in a good area with excellent coverage your phone may just stay with the H+ and not switch. Here we go.
Step 1) Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Step 2) Click Phone Information (at the top)
Step 3) Scroll down
Step 4) Click the grey/bluish menu and select GSM only. DON’T SELECT ANY OTHER ONES or you may roam on other carriers.
Why would you do this? You can save battery power by not using the H+ network.

To switch back to 3G or 4G

Is there an order to the way Skyrocket works:
If LTE is available it would connect to LTE
If LTE is not available it would try to find 4G and connect to it
If 4G is not available it would search for 3G and connect to it
If 3G is not available, it would connect to "normal GSM"
Skyrocket is a LTE/4G phone, so does it mean that whenever I make phone calls I should be connected to LTE or 4G?
I had 4G showing in the top bar for 3 days but I haven't seen 4G all day today.
And I do not see LTE or 3G there either (I am not sure if there is LTE in New York).
There is just WiFi and those signal strength bars.
If it says 4g and LTE under your are in a LTE area. If it says 4g you are in a hspa+ area. If it says E you are on edge.

Oh and when you make a call it will say 4g you can't make calls with lte only 4g.

The indicators in the info bar can be misleading. If you want to know which network you are connected to, go to "settings", "about phone", "status", and look under "mobile network type".
And for people that have data connection issues from time to time, I am willing to bet that if you look under "mobile network type" while you are having the data connection problems you will see the network type changing every few seconds or so. The phone is generally in an area where there are weak data connections in all areas and it can't decide which network to grab hold of, therefore, none of them work. I think this isn't a problem with the phone, but a problem with how AT&T's towers handle connections in weak areas.

That's because you're connected to wifi. When using wifi, the network icon goes away. If you turn wifi off, you will see it again.

Scott1479,
So I still don't see 4G. However under "Mobile Network Type" it alternates between HSPA and UMTS - I understand these are 3G networks. Very interesting
There isn't voice over LTE on AT&T (or anywhere else as far as I know).
Herro! first time poster, long time lurker! i searched around, and couldn't really find a similar problem.
I got an HTC one S from Fido, unlocked it, and i've been trying to use it on Bell. I tried several different APN's until one finally worked...but only EDGE speeds! It's also draining my battery extremely quickly. also, when i put my bell sim card inside, preferred network mode changes to WCDMA instead of HSPA (like on the fido sim).
why is this happening? i was told a fido phone would work on bell with no problem. why no 4g speeds?
thank you and i appreciate the responses in advance
HSPA uses WCDMA, so that makes no sense... Under preferred network you should have WCDMA only, 2G only, or WCDMA preferred if I recall correctly as I'm not on stock HTC rom atm so can't check. Are you getting an "E" signal indicator or are you just getting a slow connection? What does it say under About phone>Status>Mobile Network Type?
Set it to Auto mode in the network settings.

yeah, all the tech support i've talked to said it makes no sense either . i get the same outcome whether i put it on WCDMA only or GSM/WCDMA auto. when i do the speed test, it always comes out under 1 mb/s. it actually has the 4G symbol up, but the speed isn't there.
mhmm, it switches between UMTS and HSDPA.
If you have UMTS and HSPDA under status its working, and those are also what connection you're really on. If you always have a 4g icon on status bar it seems like your carrier has modded the software like T-Mobile USA does so it always shows 4g no matter what's up in the real world.
Maybe you're not in a good location and that's why you get slow data. Also I have no idea how Canadian carriers work but I'd guess if you're connected to a 850 MHz cell you'll get worse speeds than on a 1700/1900 one. Don't you guys have insane data caps everywhere, perhaps you hit yours when speedtesting?
did you try a new sim from bell
I have my wifes Verizon S3 that I updated to jellybean to get global capabilities, then I rooted the phone and was able to set a custom APN.
Im in Costa Rica and using the phone for voice and data. I have both working, however I am not connecting to the 3G network here, only the 2G edge network with slow speeds. My RAZR MAXX is connecting to the 3G HSPDA network just fine and the speeds are actually quite impressive. The APN settings in my RAZR are identical to those in the S3.
Is there a setting somewhere or something that I can do to force the S3 to connect to 3G data and not 2G? Ive check every setting I can find and I see nothing.
Thank you all so much here at xda , you have been an amazing help so far.
Perhaps a custom ROM? Or is there an app that will let me manage the radios/frequencies?
The phone only has one 3G UMTS/HSPA/+ band, and that is 2100 MHz.
It's possible that the network you are using in Costa Rica doesn't support the above band, and your other phone has additional bands that the network does support!
I am using a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket on the Dirty Unicorn rom and I was wondering how I can force my network to 3G. I have Straight Talk on AT&T and a very good LTE 4G signal but it drains my battery very quickly and I don't really need the speed of LTE and the speed of 3G works fine for the things I do.
I've tried in the Mobile Network settings to switch it to GSM/WCDMA preferred but it always immediately switches back to LTE/GSM/WCDMA mode and connects to LTE. The use only 2G networks option does not work either as it immediately gets turned back off as soon as you turn it on.
Using *#*#4636*#*# to switch the mode to WCDMA preferred or GSM preferred does not work either as it also switches back to LTE immediately after.
Is it possible to force the phone to 3G networks? On my old captivate samsung phone on a 4.2 JB rom, it was doable and it worked on 3G fine (even being a 4G enabled phone).
Here is what I've found works on AT&T but it might not work for you.
Go to mobile network settings and then Network Operators. In the Network Operators screen scan for networks. If two different networks appear select the one on the bottom. Then the 2G only button and other settings will work and stick until you reboot your phone. I have to change this every time I reboot. I hope this helps.

Yes. That worked. Now I just need to figure out how to turn off the hspa so it just uses a 3G connection on WCDMA instead of hspa or hspa+

I have been using this technique every time I reboot. Anyone know how to make this permanent?
Or perhaps automate it using tasker?
