I have my wifes Verizon S3 that I updated to jellybean to get global capabilities, then I rooted the phone and was able to set a custom APN.
Im in Costa Rica and using the phone for voice and data. I have both working, however I am not connecting to the 3G network here, only the 2G edge network with slow speeds. My RAZR MAXX is connecting to the 3G HSPDA network just fine and the speeds are actually quite impressive. The APN settings in my RAZR are identical to those in the S3.
Is there a setting somewhere or something that I can do to force the S3 to connect to 3G data and not 2G? Ive check every setting I can find and I see nothing.
Thank you all so much here at xda , you have been an amazing help so far.
Perhaps a custom ROM? Or is there an app that will let me manage the radios/frequencies?
The phone only has one 3G UMTS/HSPA/+ band, and that is 2100 MHz.
It's possible that the network you are using in Costa Rica doesn't support the above band, and your other phone has additional bands that the network does support!

I got a Tmobile sensation and I m using in Peru, for some reason the network line is in EDGE, or 2g it is the way we can change, the sim card work in 4g in another phone, some body can help me.
check your network settings and see if your running tmobile. maybe att?
Isnot working
Still under 2g, I read I need do something to activate the 850 HSPA in the cellphone.
Hi there,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE (signed with Rogers) and I'm trying to figure out how to disable 4G on my phone and only use 3G. I've looked through some threads talking about changing the "Network mode" in the "Mobile network settings," but I haven't had any luck with that.
GSM/HSPA/LTE (Auto Mode)
GSM/HSPA (Auto Mode)
GSM Only
HSPA Only
Right now, I'm using GSM/HSPA (Auto Mode) but it still says I'm connected to 4G in the status bar. In GSM Only, it connects to the edge network (E) and in HSPA only, it will connect to 4G network. Anyone have any ideas of how to connect using 3G?
Also, I've noticed in my APN settings, I'm using the "ltemobile.apn" (the only APN setting I have listed). I don't have a LTE plan, so should this be the APN that I should be using? Since I'm not on a LTE plan, would I be charged more for using the "ltemobile.apn" APN?
Thanks
4g is 3g/HSPA. If you were able to get LTE, the 4g icon would change (as long as you aren't on a ROM that doesn't have LTE icons)
Is there any way to turn off 4G/LTE completely and just use 3G to conserve battery life? I don't own a Skyrocket but my friend does and has horrible batt life.
On home screen press menu button and go to phone settings
Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Network Mode
Here you can tell it to use edge/3g/lte or edge/3g or just edge or just 3g
Hopfully that is not my ROM that allows me to choose that. Using Sky Ice Cream Sandwich rom
It depends on the ROM. Stock won't do it and a number of custom roms I've used don't do it either, but I have seen some that appear to allow for that functionality. Do some research and find one you like.
"4G" is 3g (well hspa+) which is twice as fast as what 3g speeds were originally at (see 4, iphone) its more of a marketing thing. There won't be a 3g icon showing up with these roms. best bet is to choose gsm/hspa then it won't be looking for LTE.

HSPA is actually 3G. AT&T and Tmobile were calling it 4G because they had to come up with some marketing scheme to compete with WiMaxx and LTE. SO in short, AUTO HSPA... is effectively disabling your 4G.
I bought one of these phones, rooted it, unlocked it, and installed CM9. I love the phone and OS, but I cannot get the 3G/4G to work on AT&T. Any ideas?
Yeah. The data network is incompatible. Different frequency.

Yeah I think all you can get is 2G (edge) on AT&T with the blaze.
I can say from first hand experience that the blaze works great with AT&T's 3g service. I bought this phone last week, unlocked it, and swapped in the sim from my old Aria and have been using it with CM10 ever since. Data speeds are around 3 to 6 Mb/s down and 1 Mb/s up, and voice and text messaging works fine.
For a more technical answer, AT&T uses the 850 mhz and 1900 mhz frequencies for UMTS (3g), and T-mobile uses 1700 mhz and 2100 mhz frequencies. The blaze supports UMTS on all of these frequencies so there are no technical roadblocks to using this phone with AT&T. http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Samsung-Galaxy-S-Blaze-4G_id6824
As for your problem of not getting 3g working, I had similar issues when first switching the sim card (especially on the stock rom). Check that your APN matches the one your old phone was using. On the stock rom, the phone did not auto detect the correct APN and this caused the 3g to not work. CM10 detected the correct APN right away though. Also, try turning data off and on or even rebooting the phone once you've checked your network settings.
I sold my other phone and no longer have it. Please confirm your APN settings, and how do I change them?
The blaze has all the frequencies necessary for it to do HSPA (3G/4G) on AT&T's networks.
You'll likely want to change the APN. On CM9/10, go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks + More... -> Mobile Network Settings -> Access Point Names.
I was careful in selecting this specific phone because of its compatibility with AT&T HSPA bands. I have tried the suggested tweaks to the APN settings within both CM9 and CM10, but I still get no visual notification that the phone is operating in 3G or 4G mode. The areas in which I have used the phone consistently provided 3G and/or 4G coverage consistently with my prior BlackBerry 9860.
Any additional tips/tricks would certainly be appreciated. I know this phone is capable of so much more than it's providing me at this point.

have you tried running a speed test to see if maybe it's just that the icon isn't coming up?
That is why it was called the "Merger Proof Phone"
I thought I can connect my 4GS onto the other UMTS network, but its max was HSDPA:9 (HSDPA:8 in JB).
Other phone such as Photon Q didn't have problem in connecting with HSPA+:15
Do I have to manually enable something? I believe this phone's potential is better than this
My carrier is using 2100MHz band, and my baseband ROM is a new one.
Is this info relevant : ?

If your carrier is using the 2100MHz frequency, this phone should have no problem using HSPA+ with it. When I travel to China, I use a China Unicom SIM in my MT4GS which enables my phone to use their 2100MHz HSPA+ network without any problem. Back at home in US, I use T-Mobile SIM.

Thanks, I don't know what causes this...
So, you are seeing H+ (HSPAP:15) right? All I can see with various ROMs are only 3G and H....
Do speed tests, symbols don't always mean what they say after all
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
just tested: only around 3Mbps whereas other hspa+ phone got 9Mbps...
Is there any hidden menu to tick this on?

The stock ROMs are configured by HTC/T-Mobile to display 4G when it has a HSPA+ connection. Other ROMs, however, will display 3G or H (depending on the ROM) for HSPA+. So, if you see 3G, H, or 4G, they are all HSPA+ connections. This phone operates data in the G (GPRS), E (2G or EDGE), and 4G/3G/H (HSPA+) modes. Depending on the carrier, it can perform up to 14Mbps HSPA+ but of course, you would rarely see that fast in the real world. It does not operate at the 21+ or 42+ levels of HSPA+.
I'm on a stock-based ROM (Miktouch), when I'm home on T-Mobile, I see 4G. Also, when I'm in China and connected to China Unicom, I see 4G.
I've never seen "H" on this phone, it always shown 3G or 4G (using stock ROM, just de-junked and rooted by myself)
IIRC speed test results, I had best down speed exceeding 14+Mbps on Wind in Vancouver and Toronto areas, but in US it almost always was 3G only (but then I was usually outside any large cities).

Thanks for the input, if you are using non-stock rom, still would you let me know what the following says in the most normal case:
setting - phone - status - mobile network type.
In my case, it's HSDPA:9, which seems obviously non-HSPA. Other phone shows HSPA+:15 or HSPAP:15.
Am I missing something, or HSDPA:9 can be also considered as a decent HSPA+ ?
I'm kinda downshifting toward MT4GS recently as I love its small form factor, but somewhat at a loss due to this limitation, thanks.
Hi,
HTC 7 pro is supposed to support 3G speeds. I am currently with Rogers (Canada) and have a fully unlocked phone. It looks like my phone is the Euro version. No branding on it what so ever. My question, is it possible to re-configure the phone for Rogers network to attain 3G speeds? Everything else works, MMS\Phone\SMS\GPS etc. It all works. Just want 3G speeds.
I have looked at ##3282# settings, but I have no clue what all those mean and I am unable to make changes. There is a setting for "Network Type", when I change it to 3G only, I loose connection to the network (Rogers) no phone, etc. But when I switch it to 2G only, it connects back to the network (Rogers).
Thank you so much!
