Hey guys. Looking to get a shield now as I love android gaming but my JXD S7300 starting to look a little long in the tooth. Games are struggling on it now so time to upgrade.
I did have a Sony Xperia z + gameklip combo but it just didn't feel quite right so I decided to sell and just go Shield!
Firstly, does anyone know where I can get one in the UK without having to sell my car first? The overinflated prices are ridiculous. Also, hows game compatibility? Another thing that annoyed me about the Xperia z was the amount of games that came up 'not compatible' which is why I went back to my Xperia play. Was tempted by a JXD S7800 but long term the Shield is probably a better investment.
Any help would be most appreciated guys.

For the compatibility, a lot of new games are fully joystick supported, for the touch only games, the mapper app works great. And a lot of the non compatible games, can be easily sideloaded and work almost perfect, and some of them, with joystick support.

Pretty much every game on google play is compatible now that we have the gamepad mapper. They are working on an update for the gamepad mapper to fix fps games that just use the whole right field of the screen to look around and aim. I haven't looked at ebay prices if that's what you're saying about overinflated prices but that's one option. I believe there is a way to purchase it in america, have it delivered to an intermediate usa location then have them ship it to the UK. You'll probably need a proper adapter though since the UK is 220v.

Thanks for the replies guys. I never like stock mappers but am familiar with Tincore and have seen that it works with the Shield so thats good news. Do many games see the controls natively though like with the Xperia Play or Moga?
Yeah, ebay was what I was talking about kieso. I cant get one on there for less than £350, either from one thats in the UK already, or one that needs importing with customs taxes! Thats like $550 or maybe more (not sure what conversion rates are atm).
Thanks again

There are some play games that are natively supported. Some gameloft games and others but I couldn't give you a number. The gamepad mapper is nvidias creation. A lot of times when you open a game the gamepad mapper detects that there is already a profile available for that particular game and it prompts you to download it. I think (don't quote me on this) that profiles are automatically shared among all shield users. If you don't like the given profile you can edit and save it.

With my app you can simulate other controllers as well. (converting your gamepad into a different one) But i think it is just a matter of time that most of the games support a "default" gamepad.

Oh wow that's your app! Youre a talented programmer! I don't know what gaming devs are waiting on. We've been trying for at least a couple years trying to map to controllers. It should be a standard by now to automatically include controller support. Do you have any other apps in the works?

It is a rather new feature. I think I added it about a month ago. I think that Mode P could be better in some cases to get L2 and R2 recognized.

Player Client available on Android Market now.
Go ahead boys, and get those tissues ready! You can now play games (like Assassin's Creed: Revelations, DIRT 3, etc.) on your Kindle Fire.
Now I really hope Bluetooth works for Kindle Fire, as it does for the Nook, for non touch-enhanced games.
Attached is the apk for it, in case you can't access Market // don't have your Kindle Fire rooted and want to just side load it (latest version as of 12/8/2011 ; v1.0).
UPDATE:
Attached is the apk for version 1.2, latest as of 12/23/2011.
Thank you thank you thank you!
Works like a charm on Transformer 101. Can't wait to try it out for real, with my ps3 controller.

Thanks chap
Works a treat - shame no Bluetooth on the Fire though.
I think the Onlive Wireless Controller may connect to the Kindle Fire via Wireless. It is supposed to have a bunch of modes to connect to almost any device. I am hoping that the Kindle Fire is one of the "any devices" and not the "almost".

*Fixed* due to exclusion of the other half of the population that DOES actually play TOO
I decided to give it a try, and with the limited touch games I decided on Darksiders. It actually controlled pretty damn good considering, but my internet doesn't quite have the bandwidth for high quality streaming. Seems like a fun game too, I might pick it up for the PC sometime.
BTW it works fine in Canada.

Well, women don't need tissues. If anything, they need towels =P
It worked for me, though I played Dirt 3 and it was glitchy (audio and video would stutter at times, and I got some artifacting), and the quality was only average (kinda blurry). I am on a fast connection (20/4) with Comcast, and it's running fast and smooth, so I don't think it's that. Also, it decided to exit the game on it's own, twice.
Thank You Thank You

You can use a 360 controller with the OnLive app, right? So if I purchased a usb-to-mini usb adapter I should be able to plug in my 360 controller to the KF, right?
I've found an adapter on amazon for a dollar, it won't hurt too much for trying it out unless someone thinks it won't work.

I played Dirt 3 demo on the Kindle Fire. Not bad. Controls were OK, just have to get used to the touch controls and it played with only a little lag. Saw some glitches in graphics but that is due to connection speed I guess. I have DSL 6.0 only and it was very playable.
They say we get a free game for signing up so i will check that soon.
The app works flawlessly as well. You can watch thousands of people playing live games and much more, pretty cool app and service for mobile, I think it will be big soon on mobile devices.
Apparently (according to Onlive's facebook at least) an update was pushed on the 14th that improved compatibility. Anyone had a chance to grab the new APK?

I got the free lego batman im gonna try that game tonight, dirt 3 worked ok for me the demo.
Not working on my evo. It doesn't appear in the market for my evo. When I run the apk it says its invalid.
Have we heard anything regarding GTA III getting full Xperia Play optimization? I mean, we have two joysticks right there and the game doesn't use them, when the original game used dual joysticks.
Any word?
definetly +1
Oh it uses them alright, just poorly.
I'd LOVE to see them use it right though. Moving with dpad instead of analog, and having to center the camera instead of just aiming correctly is lame as hell.

I've a stock rom OC'd to 1.6 and it still lags, very little installed on the phone too...dunno why
I suggest you contact Rockstar Support here and complain (nicely!). I opened a support ticket with them and explained to them that I purchased the game b/c I saw that the phone was "supported" and I interpreted that to mean that there is full support for the Play's PS controller. I also suggested that they let me map the buttons as I see fit, like the PC versions. I also suggested that they could let us use the volume up/down buttons as the second set of L triggers or onscreen softkeys for the second set, and we could replicate the PS2 controls perfectly.
I got them to admit after a couple of replies back and forth with them that the game does not fully support the Play's controller. It's not public, but my support request # is 157050, you may want to mention it in your ticket, in order to show them that people other than me are interested in this. In the end they said they forwarded my request to the development team. I doubt they'll actually fix it unless more people complain.
Not to change subject at all, but Are you guys even actually able to use these damn touch-pad-thinggies?lol. I have tried in Shadowgun, GTA III, & Modern Combat 2, & some others games but its hard for me! Especially the games that have shooting. Maybe its only me ,but I feel the touchpads are the weakest part of the controllers design. I think they are a good start for 1st PS phone ,but I hope they are replaced by something else in the next model.

The problem is that devs are just mapping analog thumbstick style controls to them, which DOES NOT WORK without being able to start moving from a true center position. Dead Space does it right with aiming controls that work more like a touch screen. It doesn't start spinning left just because you touched it slightly to the left of center; instead, it considers your initial point of contact to be the virtual center. Then, it moves proportionally at the speed you move and stops when you stop, like a mouse or touchpad on a laptop. Unlike the poor controls in so many other apps, it doesn't continue moving in a direction until you "let go" or the virtual stick. It just works. Try Shadowgun on a tablet and you'll see that the touch screen controls work almost exactly like that, but even they did the stupid "map like an analog stick" method on their Xperia PLAY "optimization."
I agree: Battlefield Bad Company 2 is MADDENINGLY BAD!
Try now, it just got updated with much better controls!
Still no touch pads, but at least the rest of the buttons are more in line now.

Hey so I just seen on this market pretty bad compatibility for a lot of devices it seems, the data download is choppy and the audio is reportedly out of sync for SOME devices other devices just find the game to laggy.
Having tried it myself i find it very choppy Xperia Play controls work fine for me, although other users are reporting problems, this could be down to bad downloads/ custom roms.
Not to mention it's like over a year late, guess its in preparation for episode II

You are better off buying sonic CD, its much longer and its much more fun. Sonic 4 just plain sucks.
It's working smoothly for me with xperia play controls... Stock rom with root and some system apps uninstalled, and supercharged and i have chainfire installed....
Edit-Played through first level with only one lag spike which didn't really affect me since it was so small... Touchpaxz do not work but the d-pad does and I can't see why you would want the Touchpaxz to work so I'd say buy the game... No idea what's wrong with your version... Maybe try deleting and re downloading the sd data....

EDIT: Went ahead and *forced* it anyway... and now I'm wondering why in the hell they blocked Xperia PLAY users from seeing this. It's working perfectly with Xperia PLAY's physical gamepad and I can't quite complain about the performance either.

While Sonic CD was a much bigger deal, this is kind of a big deal for me too... you guys don't know how much I bugged Sega about putting this on PSP (while most games just suck on touch-screens, platformers got the shorter end of the stick by far) and this kinda makes up for it.

Can confirm that it works fine on the Play controls.
I just bought Sonic 4 on my old Droid x and then tried the apk on my Xperia PLAY and I can tell you right now that the controls most certanly work. The menus are all touch but the game itsef supports the controls, not the touchpads but the directional pad works great.
I've been playing it a bit now, and must admit I did find a few bits of lag going on :-( but all the controls work find, and tilting on certain bits is loads of fun!!
I'm not overclocking so maybe if I pop SetCPU up to 1.4 or 1.6 it may stop the lag.

That is interesting... that means Sega was actively working on making this compatible with the Xperia PLAY this whole time.
...that brings me back to why the hell they'd make this any less than fully available day 1. It's not like they couldn't expect us to figure them out.
I've never really properly got into an optimized game for our phone and found the touchpads terrible. However I've started to pay shadowgun and it is unreal. I'm hooked on it. Feels like a proper game, as if I'm sitting in front of my xbox and the controls are close to perfect. Really gives me hope for the touchpads and proves that they don't have to be hopeless.
By far the best purchase I've made for my play and there's now an expansion pack for it that I noticed but I haven't played it yet, haven't completed the first story.
Definitely worth buying and restoring your faith in the almighty Play!

It's definitely nice, but my faith in the Xperia PLAY never really staggered to begin with.
If you'd played Dead Space, you would've known a loooong time ago that the Xperia PLAY touch-pads are a more-than-competent means of control input (and also got a sneak peek at the standards in which Shadowgun worked up to). Even outside that, there's so many other devs that have used the touch-pads perfectly that it pretty much is just Gameloft being typical Gameloft... Lantansia, Halfbrick, TwoHeads, NaturalMotion, Art in Games, Glu Mobile, Angry Mob Games and so many more have already established that the touch-pads can work extremely well with high quality titles.
shadowgun is good, so is fifa 12.

Not to sound like a downer but I thought the last two games they released were not XPO, and were only later optimized after much public outrcry. I know Shadowgun Deadzone is certainly not XPO as it also requires 4.0.4 or higher. And even the original Dead Trigger was told no XP support due to the Adreno 200/205 bug which they later again resolved. Again not trying to be a downer, I am hoping that come 10/23 we will all be pleased to see our device supported however the fact our device is not well over 2 years old and even older by hardware standpoint means eventually dev support will dry up..... of course Kemco keeps supporting our phone but not everyone is a fan of old school JRPG games. Anyways.. thread on,,,,,
The only possibility to get this optimized if they'd support Moga, cause Moga is somewhat Xperia PLAY based.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but is there a way to make the Xperia PLAY control Dead Trigger 2 (and many other FPS games, that is) running on a much stronger device? I mean like use the Xperia PLAY's gamepad, including the touchpad which is the most critical, as an external controller to play DT2 on another device running it?
Touchscreen controls, like everyone else already knows, sucks. I can't even get through missions on Hard difficulty using the touchscreen.
Does DroidMote work for this? With touchpad controls?
