Does anyone know anything about the material of the glass covering the camera? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it regular glass, gorilla glass, or just plastic? How scratch resistant is it?
Worried about wear and tear..

Gorilla Glass 3- http://www.intomobile.com/reviews/nexus-5-review/
...Apparently 3x more durable than Gorilla Glass 2. I will say this though- the iPhone 5 has GG3 on it and I managed to scratch my screen by leaving it in my pocket with some coins/keys, but noting anywhere even close to deep.

I mention in that review that the face of the device is covered in Gorilla Glass 3. This doesn't necessarily mean that it's on the lens. If it's anything like the G2's build materials, the lens could be covered in crystal sapphire glass, but Google doesn't specify this.

The iPhone does NOT have any kind of Gorilla Glass. It has always used a proprietary glass. Also, I would assume that the camera glass is sapphire like most phone cameras.

Well turns out, it has Gorilla Glass 2. Don't believe me? Here's an iSheep fanpage- if they got it wrong, they would've been crucified http://www.cultofmac.com/186017/thi...ne-5s-screen-will-be-will-make-your-jaw-drop/

Apple has not confirmed to anyone whether they use it and they are not listed on Corning's website. They have not used it before and there is a chance they still aren't. The sites you looked up are just making guesses.

Well.... Apple has never really been one to let the cat out of the bag when it comes to details about their phones. Kind of like how they filed suit against Samsung because their S-Voice software was a lot like Siri.... with a lot of people apparently failing to realize that both Siri and S-Voice were based off of voice recognition software created by the same company.... Nuance.... who also just so happens to be the creators of the software called Vlingo.... which is freely available for iPhone and Android.
It's a messed up world we live in.

I doubt it's sapphire. It's not the actual lens on the camera, it's a large circle of glass covering the the camera module and the rings around it.
I'd think this would already be answered by now, what with camera being all protruding and vulnerable to scratches. My suspicion is that since it hasn't been brought up by Google itself, it is regular glass.
P.s who cares about the iPhone? If we need a point of reference for gorilla glass there are tons of other devices out there.

So you chose to ignore the 3 quotes I had from companies in the industry to post one from a no name person on an Apple forum? Probably a good idea. Did you not realize there are other Apple forums that "confirm" it. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2753001?start=15&tstart=0
Either way, I doubt Apple will ever tell.
@Eliad Kimhy- the iPhone is in this thread because I used it as an example as to how the screen does scratch, go back and re-read the first couple posts and you would've known that.

Yes, I understand that, I'm just wondering what's the point of arguing whether the iPhone has gorilla glass or not when there are tons of other devices with *confirmed* gorilla glass which have been tested and scratched...
Anyone figure this out yet, by the way? I'm still laying my phone on the table like it's made out of eggshells.

Any one figured out what kind of glass it's on the camera?

I don't get why Google decided to use such a large portion of glass covering the camera sensor :/

I don't think the iPhone 5 came out in time for gorilla glass 3. But regardless, it was most likely the dust/lint in your pocket. Ironically, keys and coins don't scratch it but little bits of sand do.

How is that strange? You DROPPED IT ON THE SCREEN. Of COURSE there will be problems if you drop it on the screen. Everyone has this misunderstanding of what Gorilla Glass is. Gorilla Glass ≠ Bullet Proof. It's still glass, it's just been formulated to scratch less easily then normal glass. If it was a polycarbonate like Lexan and shattered, that would be strange.
Remember kids. It's GLASS.

I didn't mean to come off like a ****. I did read your first post, hence why I quoted it. I guess the comment was taken out of context because it wasn't necessarily directed specifically to you (yes I realize I quoted only your comment). I've just seen too many threads turn into "Gorilla Glass is crap" and "WTF I dropped it and it broke whyyyyyyyyy?"
When you drop/chip glass and it has a small micro-fracture, it may look fine until more pressure is added, and it gives.
Think about a windshield. That tiny little chip that the rock that fell off of the back of that cement mixer you were following on the highway made looks innocent enough, until you hit a pothole and it shatters the glass.
As far as scratches, it only scratches when a material harder than it (diamonds, some keys, quartz particles, sand) rubs it. I just keep mine very protected in my old school G1 sleeve. It fits perfectly in there, and you can order them for $3.65 from Amazon.com ( http://www.amazon.com/T-Mobile-HTC-...EQJ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312312354&sr=8-1 ) with free shipping.

Mine has no scratches at all and I touch it alot. I don't know how everyone is managing to scratch their glass so easily.

I dont want to carry a phone in a pouch...I would rather risk it than to have it ring and be muffled and also hard to get to. Plus I dont see that fitting very well in my pockets with my keys/ciggs/lighter...I already ordered a replacement digitizer for 50 bucks so its not really a huge deal..Mainly I was surprised that it didnt break on impact but only when I decided to wipe off the dirt..Im not saying gorilla glass is trash cause it does a damn good job of not scratching when i throw it in my pocket with keys or coins. Now im just wondering if this replacement will be of the same quality.

That is what I was going to say. Glass will get microfractures from impacts because it is so brittle. I used to fix rock chips on windshields and had an experience where the windshield cracked as soon as I had finished repairing the chip. Big ol' spider crack, lol. All I did was remove the cloth covering the repair so the resin could cure in the sun. But from the pressure the resin injector and the sudden temperature variation with the sun, everything went to hell.
Also, the stronger something becomes, the more brittle it becomes.
But that really sucks. Is it still covered under the warranty? I bet you could repair the cracked screen yourself if there is a tear-apart video on youtube.
My son dropped his today Everything still works but the glass is cracked all over the screen.
Anybody know the price for repair if we send it off to HTC?
Mine has a bunch of micro-scratches, but they're only visible if the screen is off and if you've got a lot of sunlight on it. Gorilla glass is nice.

that video is making a lot of claims about what their screen protector can do...lol at the hammer part of the video, it looks like he was placing it on the screen. the drop test proved nothing too as they tried drop it flat instead of on an edge not to mention we dont know how many times the phone did break for them to get that shot. In real life situations most of the time when a phone drops it will hit an edge and this is also where the glass is most vulnerable. Screen protectors dont add any protection against drops, you need a case for that.
Wasnt there many screen protectors like this at CES? why not just get one those than risking losing your money on a kickstarter that never gets funded.

nope, i was just saying their drop test is misleading, but just went back and check out the rest of it. I assume you are referring to the "scientific" ball bearing drop. How is a steel ball dropping on a phone anything like a real life drop. Even their scientific test is misleading they should of put a cheap competitor screen protector instead of naked glass to prove that their screen protector is so much better.
I dont doubt that putting a layer of plastic over a screen makes it stronger against an impact at the center of the glass panel but this is not where a phone hits when it falls. Edges are weakest on glass screens, edges are where phones first hit when they are drop on a flat surface since screen protectors do not protect edges they do not protect against drops...If you dont believe me just search drop test on youtube and you will see that the vast majority if them break from the corner or edge.

You should take your threadcrapping general anger at screen protectors out on some other thread. Nobody here is some poor fool who needs you to clarify the physics of phone breakage. It's clear what they're selling, the question is whether it's better than tempered glass or something else. Some of us work in places where the environment itself is a hazard and who can use this sort of thing because an otterbox defender type case may not be enough.

No where did they claim that its a magical solution that will protect against all types of drops.
Here is their official reply about it.
Evolutive Labs says:
Hi,
Thanks for the interest
It all really depends on the orientation of the drops, if the first point of contact is protect by Rhino Shield i.e. land it on the face, then the screen would be fine. In another scenario, i.e. facedown but tilt, if the tilt angle is less than 30% (horizon is 0 degree), there is very high chance of survival rate. above this angle, the frame and casing plays more important role.
There will be FAQ upload soon.

You need to relax and get your own anger checked. Neo is 100% right. This project is full of bs. As I stated in reddit thread
" This seems very sketchy as some one who worked in a research lab for 3 years the way they portray their data is not convincing in the video. 1.) Main reason.. After they banged on the glass with the magical screen protector they simply removed it.. Instead of then banging on the screen without a screen protector to show us that the screen can in fact break. They did this on all the occasions. Even the ball drop on the screen shows one screen breaking into a million pieces while the undamaged screen simply has its protector removed instead of a follow up test with another ball drop.
2.) Gorilla glass becomes more and more brittle as the hardness increases. Its main function is to prevent scratching. Thus a direct force can probably break the glass. I dont see how a screen protector can dissipate the energy from a force and leave the screen undamaged.
I call bull on this Rhino shield product. I'm no expert in the realm of screen protectors but no way can a thin layer of plastic with different layers protect your screen from shattering. Best it can do is prevent the debris from flying everywhere."
Unless these guys present their data better I'm calling bs on this chunk of plastic.
I got a reply for my question about how much of the screen the Rhino covers, here is their reply.
Hi Marco,
Thanks so much for the support!!!
first drop protection,
the drop protection all really depends on the orientation of the drops, if the first point of contact is protect by Rhino Shield i.e. land it on the face, then the screen would be fine. The fitting for nexus 4 would only cover the flat surface at the moment, we are trying very hard to try to get the curve covered as well.
We are waiting for a new batch of prototype being produced and also the tool being made (nexus 4 require different tool from all others phone because of the curvature).
Many Thanks

[Q] How to check if the Gorilla Glass is present or not?

So yesterday I dropped my second hand HTC One X and it shattered instantly. The touch is working perfectly fine but I fear that the glass is not the Corning one because they don't even scratch that easily. So I got it fixed and thought of exchanging it with another one but I wanna make sure the other one has Gorilla Glass. So how do I know if it has GG or not?

Take a hammer to it and see if it breaks.
Just kidding, don't do that.
I'm not sure about this but I am interested to see if anyone else has an answer..
Every single one of these phones has Corning GG. I'm not sure what you expect out of it? If you drop your phone hard enough or on the wrong angle of course it's going to shatter. Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant, it isn't invincible.

Yeah, but there is really no way of checking for that. Even if he were to take the new phone apart, the screen may not have enough info to determine GG or not. And taking it apart will surely void whatever warranty or return policy on the purchase, anyway.
If such things make the OP that nervous, than don't buy second hand.
And as timmaaa stated, GG is meant to be stronger and scratch resistant than "untreated" glass, but its far from unbreakable. There have been plenty of cases of GG breaking on this and virtually any other make/model of phone with GG (particularly from edge or corner impact). Corning is now making Gorilla Glass 3. They wouldn't have to keep improving it to make it better, unless it needed improvement.

There have been plenty of cases of GG breaking on this and virtually any other make/model of phone with GG (particularly from edge or corner impact). Corning is now making Gorilla Glass 3. They wouldn't have to keep improving it to make it better, unless it needed improvement.

I agree. Depending on how your drop any GG phone, the whole thing can shatter. I have a small crack in my One X and I never dropped. Just had my keys in my pocket with the phone, and a crack showed up. It is tougher than the older stuff for sure. But yeah, no phone can take abuse directly from a hard drop.

Is there a plastic piece installed factory over the camera?

I can't tell.... and if there isn't I don't want to pick at it and scratch it.
Nope
I just did the exact thing. eBay has the part it's easy to fix I did it. Just don't get the acrylic one. And ask before buying even if the picture looks like the OEM glass one make sure! Unless you want the acrylic one it's less prone to cracking but will scratch.

How did you replace it?
I did actually get the acrylic one, as it is less likely to break again

Simply being in my pocket. You'll see on the forums this is happening to a lot of people. The consensus is that LG phoned it in on the camera glass quality.

Yeh, I noticed all the glass problems, am I lucky or what, no problem for me with any problem mention in this forum about the glass built or any other stuff, and I had my G5 from day 1 after exchange it once, but I can remember the reason why I exchanged it.:fingers-crossed:
Just looking back at my camera len, I do have a deep scratch, but lucky I have a PET lens protector on, so it's only the protector that is scratched, at least I do have 3 spare one left.

Yeah I thought the same thing before I pulled the phone out of my pocket, nothing out of the ordinary had happened, and it was mysteriously broken. It's going to be like a recall if it gets really bad...
It doesn't take much pressure to brake it but it doesn't just do it on its own. This isn't the 6p being too tight around the glass and it breaking from expansion @kchannel9 just lift off what's left of your glass and peel it off no need to open the phone up. Just make sure no glass is left in it when you put the new one on. It should come with adhesive. And don't touch the lens! Cover it up if it breaks all the way it out or tape over it if it is just cracked to protect the camera! I might get the acrylic one to put over my glass replacement one now that I see how fragile it is.

It's simple to replace. Mine cracked and I ordered 2 off eBay. I had to replace it for a warranty exchange. Just use tweezers to get under the glass in the crack and peel it out. Insert the new adhesive sticker, then lay the new glass down. Takes about 5-10 minutes.

Just replaced mine, was easy. The acrylic one I got from eBay/China works fine, though there are visible lines in the acrylic, it did not seem to effect the pictures taken. If I find with more testing that it does, I will get the glass again instead, and also add a glass protector as well. But for now seems fine.
Ok nevermind, after taking some pictures in full sun it is apparent that the acrylic adds a ghostly fuzziness to the images where there once was impressively sharp clarity. Going to order the glass version and a tempered glass protector for that piece as well. Really annoying, you'd think a $700 flagship phone wouldn't have this issue.

Liquid screen protector

lol i was reluctant to post this but our options are not looking good so far. Has anyone tried this? I wouldn't mind applying it often if needed but i always wondered if this works. I have seen what some think about it but im asking those that have actually tried it and have experience with it.
Search it if you don't know what im talking about

why dont options look good?
I been using skinomi protectors screen the note egde. they work great and stick very well to the edge. havent had any edges pull up.
There also very clear and easy wet install.

Honestly, they feel like straight tacky rubber. They also affect the clarity in my opinion.
Hum i havent had that problem. I used my s7 edge without a protector for a wk til the skinomi came in. Once instal, after a day or 2 didnt even know i had it on.
But to each there own, you know.
has anyone done a crash test for these??
I've never used a screen protector on my previous phones (Note 2 / Note 4) and have never had any issues with scratches. I always have my phone in my pocket, though I always place it with the screen facing my thigh to avoid any accidental damage to the screen from outside and I never place keys in the same pocket.
When inspecting my note 4 after 2 years of use I can only see a few very fine hairline surface scratches that are basically only visible under very close scrutiny, under specific light and with the screen tilted at a specific angle - so generally speaking, my note 4 screen is still flawless after 2 years of use.
Now the scratch resistance of GG5 glass in the now infamous video of note 7 does trouble me as does the lack of good screen protectors which cover the whole screen without having to deal with drawbacks such as rainbow effects, hollow clicking, loss of sensitivity, peeling of corners etc.
Therefore, I'm also considering the liquid solution from Kristall for my preordered Note 7 in hopes that it could help prevent scratching of the glass on the device. I couldn't care less about the improved shatter-resistance of the GG5, as I do have an insurance plan that would cover an accident, but so far I have yet to shatter a screen on any of my phones.
So I'm planning to use the Note 7 as is, without ugly covers or screenprotectors, but would using something like Kristall liquid screen protector be able to improve my chances of not scratching up the glass? Does anyone have any insight / personal experience / references to tests that show its effectiveness in regards to scratches? (Not in regards to shatter resistance)
I have always been curious about these. I would love to see a video demonstrating the effectiveness.

The Nexus 6 uses Gorilla Glass 3 though, which is even more scratch resistant than gorilla glass 4 (but more prone to shattering). I wish they would go back to using GG3 to be honest.
They should use Sapphire since we're paying so much for this damn phone

Maybe JerryRigEverything will do a test on them to see if they do anything. I asked him on Twitter. Maybe he will check them out.

Something like applying the liquid solution to half of the screen of note 7 and then using the picks to scratch both sides would be awesome and would really show if this stuff has an effect?

Yes that would be the way to go TBH.
These treatments may prevent stuff from abrading the oleophobic coating but they aren't going to prevent scratches in the glass itself. Also if it truly is a persistent coating, it's going to change how your fingers slide across the screen. It could be for the better or for the worse. If it's the latter, I wonder how hard it would be to remove?

From what I've read online, the feeling was slightly different to naked glass, but not "bad different". Also the screen is supposedly gettimg a little more gloss /shine with this.
As I understand, the coating mostly covers/fills the microscopic pores on the surface of the glass, so I'm guessing that it'd still feel smooth?
As for removing the coating - no idea
I think I'm gonna try it out on my note 7 when I receive it (gotta wait till the 9th of September)...
I'll post back regarding my experience, but since I'm not gonna attempt to scratch up my new device on purpose, I probably won't be able to say anything regarding the effectiveness of the added scratch resistance as opposed to not using the solution...
I'd still love to see a proper test from JerryRigsEverything though!

GG5 is garbage.
I noticed today in direct sunlight that I have quite a few faint scratches. You can't see them when the screen is on and the scratches are only visible at certain angles.
But considering its only been a week and this phone costs as much as a laptop that's unacceptable.
Well from what i found, a note 7 screen replacement will cost $250(for the new screen itself) lol i would have ordered one and tried this liquid screen protector stuff but damn that lol
I did some Google-Fu and found this thread. Like others have said, what good is screen protection you can't remove if it gets messed up?
Staples employees rant about it.

This is just what i found on this particular one
No, liquid screen protector does not work. Have seen reviews in my local forums that scratches occur after.
Also, I've just made experiment by putting on car coating material (aquartz t-cera) on my tablet's screen,
3 layers with a day of curing for each layer, 2x application per layer .. and after days of curing,
tried rubbing small piece of sand/dry cement to the screen glass (non gorilla),, and tadaaa, scratches !
so, No ... liquid stuff doesn't work for me.
