How do you keep your camera lens scratch-free?

I apologize if this has been covered a 1000 times, but I did a cursory search and only run into threads about the screen cover or full-body protection, i.e. the lens cover is almost always just mentioned in passing.
I'm one of the many who have discovered that the plastic lens cover integrated into the battery cover is extremely prone to scratches. I've ordered two extra covers from Expansys, but at this rate, I'll need to get a new one every 2-3 months.
On previous phones, I tried various screen covers that either came with a lense cover (Martin Fields) or cut one out myself, only to find that the clarity of the plastic screen covers causes the pictures to come out hazy or milky. This is partially due to the difficulty of removing fingerprints, but even more due to the fact that screen protectors aren't really designed to be crystal clear like a camera lens is. I invariably took them off and risked it, but on most of my other units, the only thing that was real glass was the lens cover. Not so on the Desire.
Does anyone have any advice on this front?

i use the martin fields lens cover that came with the martins fields screen cover... its very good for the price....

I had an old screen protector that I cut a rectangle to cover the lens.
Looks OK but not perfect.
I may try to cut a circle to cover it properly.

I am not sure how you damage it, i keep my phone in its pouch, when i take it out or put it back down i put the phone ontop of the pouch so the camera is not touching the surface. A cover would i assume make the picture loose quality?

I'm generally very careful with my phones, but accidents happen and I managed to get a bunch of hairline scratches on the lens cover after just 6 weeks with the phone.

Can you show me URL for this product?

Not saying that they haven't made progress, but I used to have a Martin Fields lens protector on my old Omnia i900 and found that the plastic of the lens protector caused hazy pictures even when clean.
I'm beginning to wonder if a liquid solution might be the way to go. Something like clear nailpolish that could be removed and reapplied if it got scratches in it. Anyone hear of something like this?

I've got the same problem, a lot of little scratches at the lens cover which make my photos not as sharp/clear as it should be. I think with the pouch I recently ordered the problem is over, but for now I must order a quite expensive new battery cover.

The liquid would have to be perfectly flat and of uniform thickness to prevent refraction, I doubt such an application could be achieved "at home"

I just use a thick gel skin for my phone and a padded microfibre pouch.
The thickness of the skin makes the lens very deeply recessed so it's way safer.

take out the lens
Perhaps too obvious, but I knocked out the camera lens in the battery cover. After more than a year still no scratches on the camera itself and perfect pictures (at least, for this camera unit). Protection is sufficient with a pouch.

Crap!! It just dont work..after few days dust started to accumulate between the rectangular screen protector and the camera lens. More scratch now!! Crap..crap!! >¦c
P/s: i did try to cut the screen protector round, but the glue of the screen just come out during cutting process..not work also..

just remove the scratched up bit of plastic and stop worrying, the lens is countersunk below the case anyway,
i removed the plastic lens from my battery cover after having the desire for about 2 weeks, 6-7 months later my pictures still come out as sharp and defined as when new,
if you get any dirt on the camera lens simply take off your battery cover and you can clean it easily,

The worry part is during clean up the camera lens. If i wipe it with some chemical n tissue, there is a high risk the lens get scratch ;c

well as i said mines been fine for the last 6-7 months, i just take the battery cover off and give it a wipe with my t shirt or something, no scratches so far,,

This may not be necessary!
I've been having this issue for ages too.. i clean the plastic lens but it appears to be scratched as pics come out hazy, just like other posters above. I have just pushed out the plastic lens on the battery cover as suggested and sure enough pics are instantly clearer.. however when inspecting the plastic lens cover i realized two things
* the sticky part is very sticky!
* the inside of the plastic part (the sticky side) appears to be dirty..
i cleaned it with one of those cloths you use for specs and since it's still very sticky i put it back in.. tried a few shots with the battery cover on and off, and i' can't notice any difference.. no longer hazy!
sure though, knocking it out avoids having to clean in form the inside .. but i'm afraid of scratching the inside lens.. that one's more difficult to replace

if you REALLY want to go all out, you could take the cover to a jewler/watch repair and have them replace the glass with sapphire crystal... it's so small that it may not cost an outrageous amount, but then they would have to cut it to size...

Bought myself another battery cover from ebay, I hope this one will last, gonna have to figure out how to maintain that new one scratch-free.

It's a saphire glass replacement lens cover for our beloved Desire , and apparently is very scratchproof (according to reviews) . They had a slight quality problem early in the manufacturing process, the first items came out slightly too large, but it seems that's fixed by now ...
I will order one and give it a try , as I have quite bad scratches in mine after 1.5 years of normal use and don't really want to leave the camera itself uncovered

So I just got this screen protector today and it does look amazing ill admit. The problem is it does not seem like the top part of the protector wants to attach to the phone as if there is no adhesive. This is mostly my fault ill admit. I put it on wrong and what i did was take the bottom of nail and peeled it up and tried to re apply to adjust it. Is there any way I can maybe re ad the adhesive and how can I safely get off any lint or w/e that may have gotten onto the bottom of the screen protector? I already opened a ticket to spigen but I heard that their customer service is crap so I just wanted to see if there was anything I could do in the mean time.

No such luck. They uses special adhesive. No way to remove dust. You have to be extremely careful when applying this glass protector....
Sgp won't help you because it's your fault for applying it incorrectly.

Even if i just got the product there is nothing i can do to get a replacement? I mean isnt there like a 30 day thing if im not satisfied?

You have to be quick, there is a 30days time frame from when you purchased.

I must be just as bad. This is the most frustrating screen protecter to apply. I've been known to mess up once but never had this much problems. It floats off center, fingers holding it and getting in the way. Front plastic made it hard to estimate the edge with the rounded corners, getting caught as well on fingers as I let go pushing it slightly to one side. Unable to pry it back up without barely scraping the adhesive ruining one corner if not multiple edges from micro fuzz etc. The squeegee is worthless on the glass, back protector is fine but just have to deal with it.
Must be me. Oh well. Good thing I get the cheap ass protector with my Neo Hybrid case.

You tried the masking tape method?
Align it the screen protector without peeling off the back cover. Once it's in place, use making tape to hold it in place, like a book. Put some a strip from the front down across onto the phone. You should be able to "open" it like the page from a book. Then apply it. Should make things easier.

a Good company will stand behind their products. After seeing my brother's Hybrid case and reading some things on their customer service, I chose to pass on Spigen.
The clear coat on his bumper part is already chipping way, the whole thing looks like a cheap Chinese knock off ( bought directly from Spigen).
Zagg for example, a product I don't recommend at all because 1) It's a horrible product 2) it's ridiculously expensive. But the only thing they have is pretty much unquestioned replacements. Which I'm sure they can do because of ridiculous markup.
BTW, it might not be your fault at all, because these are rigid glass pieces, they have to be flat in order to stick to the phone. a SLIGHT imperfection will cause it to not stick.
All that being said, I went with MIME glass protector.

I have the glas t and I love it. They are much easier to apply then typical plastic ones as they dont bend and flop around when applying. When I applied mine it lined up perfectly but I did get lint under it right in the middle of the damn screen. I tried dealing with it but couldn't take it so I lifted it half way up with my finger nail and used scotch tape to get the lint off... dropped it back down and it looked even worse. I thought i wasted 27 bucks until the morning when I looked at my screen and bubbles were gone. So it is possible to remove lint just dont touch the adhesive.

just pay the half price spigen charges to replace it and move on. sulk it up as paying for a learning experience.
they already mention that the best method for aligning the thing is to use scotch tape on the top and bottom aligning it then drop down.
if you dont want any dust trapped, well don't mind me for stating the obvious but... don't work in a dusty room, close windows/doors turn off fans... don't breathe too hard on it lol.
use a photo air duster like a Rocket blower, to remove any left over dust/lint from cleaning the screen. I find that camera lens solution and lens paper works perfectly for prepping the surface. use the included stickers to remove any left over dust that cannot be blown away by the rocket blower.
if you can do not reapply once completely set down, when applying make sure it's aligned, bottom edges, make sure the gaps are evenly distributed on all sides, cutout holes centered...
when applying and you notice it is not centered gently lift up but never touch the adhesive side. lift up with only scotch tape.
I've been applying screen protectors for years and have gotten it down to a science... everyone comes to me to get theirs installed haha...

Once any part of this is adhered scotch tape is useless as it's glass. you have to use a suction cup or your finger nail you just have to be careful.

I install mine in the bathroom with the shower on hot. Let the steam take care of all the dust particles. I have been doing it this way for a awhile now and i never get dust under the screen.

i installed mines 5 days ago and got a 2mm air bubble on the right side of the home button i couldn't squeegee it out and doesn't seem to want to go away. has anyone else experienced this? is there anything i can do to get rid of it or will it eventually go away on its own? fortunately its not on the actual screen but its still an eyesore

i re applied my twice, wif no side effect, just dun touch the adhesive side, use industrial musking tape to lift it and for dust on under the screen, use scotch tape to remove it. key point is to never touch e adhesive side wif ur finger. nothing wrong wif this product, love it! its like the original screen, just tat if u really scratch it, u can remove it and there is the perfect screen below it.
btw for those tat claim it could b an production defects tat the glass is not perfectly straight, being in the glass industry for over 30 yrs, its actually easier and cheaper to create prefectly straight glass then any wif the slightest curve.

Same thing happened to me so I had to return it. The install came out perfect but the top left did not want to seal/adhere properly. I was so disappointed so I just went with the tried and true zagg. I purchased the protector from eBay so the return policy is different from their website.

just tried lifting up that part of the screen for a few seconds and putting it back down. this air bubble is like a giant zit that wont go away

The issue with it not laying after picking it up with your fingernail is not necessarily because the adhesive has gone bad. You need to level out the edge you stuck your nail under. Happened to me, fixed it with the squeege between the phone glass and the protector, prying up to level out the edge.

The steam trick works. Its not like its a sauna and your phone is a steamy. The steam is like a static electricity to dust.

Heart rate sensor easy to scratch?

Is anyone else's heart rate sensor all scratched up? I removed the plastic when I got the phone on the first day and after a few weeks its pretty scratched up for some reason.

Yeah, I noticed that as well on multiple S6s I looked at. In fact, some are already very scratched from the factory as soon as you take the protective film off (if you can get it off haha).

Same here, as soon as i removed the protective film of the HR ive immediatelly found a hidden scratch beneath it, what the heck man, its a 650€ phone i deserve pristine condition on such a high price point.

fingernails but ofc with care, the scratch is on the other side of the removal process so if it were my fingernails it would be on the right side rather than left side scratch.

Same here, yes. It's not Gorilla glass but only plastic so yeah, normal I'd say and it won't affect functionality in any way yet it's annoying.

It is indeed very annoying i cant believe they went cheap on us with such a stupid thing that could have made it a perfect phone... its stupid. I hope that the OIS is not there and rather part of the camera sensor ?

Whitestone dome delamination cause

So I have said this from the start. Whitestone has cut major corners on this product. I knew this from the first "Review" if you want to call it that because no one has reviewed this. They just make install guides and try to get you to buy it. The dead give away for me was when they sell it at around $40 when proper UV adhesive alone would cost $20 and the amount they give you would be $40. That's bulk prices. I work in the opto-electronics industry so stuff like this is what I deal with every day.
So I did some test. Using the stock Whitestone cure light, A UV oven, a Spot cure UV station, A Dymax cure station as well as others. When I took the protector off you can tell the adhesive never fully cured. This explains why you get the delamination what looks like bubbles to some or a kinda web look.
In one of the pictures marked spot cure. You will see the dot that is a proper optical adhesive. You see why the included adhesive turned to gel the stuff we use was fully cured. Both were exposed to the same light for the same time. If you use this I guarantee you will never get delamination or have a case light the protector up. But keep in mind that one tube of that is $20 but it shows how cheap the included adhesive is

No UV cure station I have here can fully cure that junk. And it is junk. I have seen some cheap UV adhesive but this is by far the absolute worst.
I will do some more test with this adhesive. I don't even think its optical grade.
But if Whitestone wants to send me some samples of adhesive or some kits i'll be more then happy to test them and post my findings. But from the 2 kits I have seen. First had delamination the second kit direct from Whitestone aka Cellto USA in Torrance California is 100% total trash.
And here is a video of more uv light then will ever be put on this adhesive. Note that adhesive was from my first kit. So 2 kits one from Amazon the other direct from them and neither one of them could do a full cure.

Thanks for this in-depth info. If you check reviews for this product on Amazon and sort by new, you will see tons of others having delamination on the edges and reporting their screen still broke after a drop.
I was hoping for a good, glass screen protector it looks like Whitestone is astroturfing reviews and even comments here. Maybe they are inconsistent in production causing the disparity, but after doing research on it, I skipped Whitestone.

I'll get back with a part number and link to some good uv adhesive. Then just get the Whitestone replace the adhesive with that and it will be good to go. Install the same cure the same. Just gotta check a few adhesives out get one that flows well and gets a good cure off the oem light.

If you are going that route, might as well just get a cheaper glass screen protector, strip any adhesive, and apply your own. Since it doesn't seem effective at drop protection, the only concern would be possible lackluster screen sensitivity. No need to pay a company for doing a bad job and cutting corners on a "premium" product.

You could but the little tiny bumps on the bottom of the protector help get an even coat of epoxy. You can do it without them but those would help with it.
But depending on fit the Zagg with the little strips of 2 sided tape might be the best bet. I just don't know how it will fit. I might have one laying around I can dig up and test with some uv adhesive if people really wanna see how that would work. Should be the same for any other one since they would all have flat bottoms without the little bumps.

Ok video is uploading. I test it against some ok optical adheasive. I might have to upload it when I get home. I made it to show that the stuff was fresh from the vial for the Whitestone and the optical adhesive I used was crap and it was expired. Here are some pics of it at 380x.
And I must say. The stock adhesive I dont think is optical. Because this was some pretty cheap optical adhesive and as you can see it's better.

Showing delamination at 380x proper adhesive won't do that. It just fails. This Dymax also made a stronger bond and it was even expired. Also note the optical propertys of it even failed are much better then the delaminated oem.

Bought a 2-set of Whitestone Dome for my Note 9, and I installed the first one and for me, it was perfect..? I made the mistake of using the Gear VR with the old adaptor (Note 8 fit) that puts pressure on the bottom part of the screen, so I got the bubbles effect on a tiny horizontal strip around 1mm high by 10mm wide. But other parts of the protector are amazingly smooth. I don't understand what is not ideal here. I believe you are warning us about something that is ****ed up, I just don't understand what..?
EDIT: also please recommend the good enough adesive, if possible at all, available at amazon.co.jp too.. I can use the second glass from the 2-pack
Will the Whitedome light suffice?

@gamekill, the left image shows the problem with the whitestone adhesive. Can you see the spiderwebs already? That is what I was getting. Whitestone sent me a replacement, but I had to pay for shipping (12 €) which I regret for doing. Their excuse is to blame the user.
@bignazpwns, how difficult is to remove the screen protector if you use a stronger UV adhesive? This whitestone one comes out very easy.

I second this!

Little tied up at work so ill do some more testing this week. Company I work for is a huge player in the 5g market so we're pretty busy. The picture shows delamination. That's what happens if you push on it. The adhesive does not fail because it's like a gel. It will streach. That give you that webbing or bubbles as some call. Stronger adhesive fully cured won't streach. You can push and you won't get any delamination. It will hold until the adhesive fails. So with your gear VR that part pushing on it would not happen with high quality optical adhesive. Keep in mine that line is 100um. The slide each line is 10um. So looking at a gear VR you are getting some distortion with the oem adhesive. Pixels on the note 9 are red 22um blue 24um and green 14um. So using a gear VR with the screen and oem adhesive the picture will not be as sharp due to the low quality of the adhesive. Will it be a huge impact? Probably not but it will be there and under magnification you can really see how poor the adhesive is. Under magnification the adhesive not being optical quality acts as a defuser for the light. Look good until you start to add magnification. I haven't looked at it with a gear VR because I don't have one but I know what optics they use for hmd's and you will start to see that it actas as a defuser.
Adhesives I'll test a few we got here and get some samples and test them. Removing even with a stronger adhesive should be fine. I don't know of the protector will come off in one peice but it when I poped the slides apart it wasn't like the Whitestone's oem that was like tar. This was a hard snap at the point of the adhesive failing then it lifted off.
I got a spare done screen protector. I'll clean that up and run some adhesive removal test on it. The oleophobic coating on the note 9 will help with that removal.it won't be as strong as a pure glass to glass bond like on the slides. But it can be removed. And we use methonal to help remove it on some tiny fiberoptic lenses.
But as soon as I can I'll get to more testing. Grade some adhesives on holding power. We have a machine that can mesure the force required to break that bond. And if tell you what adheasive to use if you want something like the strength of the oem or if you want something a little stronger for a case that likes to press against it.
I should have some time this week to do some test and let you know know what adhesive to order and where to order it. I'll be using the oem Whitestone dome light to cure it so my results will be the same you can get at home.

Yes, on a thin horizontal area at the bottom center part, right above the USB port. That is where the Gear VR connector pushed against the screen.

It would be nice indeed to use a better adhesive and not have that problem!

I have a question. If we use a stronger adhesive and when time comes you'll break the protector and if we try to remove the protector, will it damage the original glass in the removal process?
I'm also interested i. This because my current protector lost some adhesives on the curved edges.

Pretty tied up at work. I'll get more info in a day or two. I did find some adhesive if you guys never want that screen protector to come off lol.
Ordered some samples to test so soon as those get in I'll start testing those.

That is my concern. Screen protectors are supposed to be replaceable if they break. If when they get broken or removed,the original screen gets ruined, it is meaningless.
Also, if an adhesive is super strong, wouldn't if make the protector grip so strongly to the screen that if the protector shatters, the screen gets shattered too?

That's using our stuff for a permanent bond lol. I got some other stuff here that's about 40% stronger then oem but I was able to get it off no problem. I ordered the liquid version of it we use a gel version. Same adhesive ones just a gel. I'll get it on the. Pull it off and let you guys know how it is.
End of the year and the upcoming 5g were pretty busy here.

It's about bond strength. I got some stuff that's better then the oem. I can peal it out. Then I got some good stuff that holds 10x stronger then the oem...that will come off...with a ton of force. So I think I found the sweet spot. Checking out a gel version to see how that goes and if it will offer some impact resistance why still maintaining touch sensitivity.
When I pick the winner I'll do a video installing and the. Removing it to show everyone. For the love of God don't just put some on. Most atlre permanent and if you don't know what the propertys are just going with optical uv adhesive you will get something for the fiberoptics industry thats used to hold lenses on fibers.

Question How is your Ultra holding up? Scratches etc

My ultra is now 3 months old. I have the burgundy version. Even though I’ve been particular about cleaning it there is a tiny paint chip on the camera

tried using one of lens wipes to clean it but it didn’t come off.
I’m curious how phones are holding up for you guys.

Still pretty much same condition as when I took it out of the box, already had the case & screen protector waiting so I didn't waste any time when it was delivered.

I actually didnt notice these small dots. Looked pristine to me but when I was cleaning and saw them in direct light it was noticed. What color do you have? Can you share a photo of the bottom of the phone?

I was actually surprised how easy the screen has gotten a ton of small little scratches, suppose its my fault for hating screen protectors and cases, finally started using Whitestonedome screen protectors and currently using the latercase.
Surprisingly the back of my phone still looks brand new

Mine is good so far. It comes out of the case every other day and it and the case get a wipe down with a damp cloth. Then dried with a microfiber cloth before going back in the case.
If you leave the phone in the case for long periods of time, abrasive particles will get in between the phone and case and the damage begins.

Mine is doing great. I treat it like my car; I use it as designed, clean it occasionally, and do a little maintenance every so often.

I would say no. If you think of this single spot on top, it was most likely a one dust particle.

They actually look like dust particles on mine too. They might seem less pronounced given your colour though. Mine wont wipe off completely.

I have the Black one and no scratches toll now (using without case) but camera has small Spot... The white one with no paint on the shell from my friend ist perfekt till now... Think next time i go for white

Put an Otterbox on the device right away but not a screen protector. The screen is extremely prone to micro scratches which can only be seen when screen is off, or with very low backlight and dark image (I've had the device a month an already some prominent micro scratches) . Awaiting screen protectors in the mail. This is a bummer as previous versions of gorilla glass stood up better to micro scratches (never had nearly the micro scratches on my S20 which I ran for 2 years without screen protection) . Pay off I guess for having better shatter protection.

Iv been running case with a naked screen ever since I realized that every protector ive tried affects either swipe typing and more so Spen responsiveness. Thank God tmobile allows you to add insurance to phones they offer regardless if it's bought from them or 3rd parties. The phone is just way to smooth for any obstructions for me.
