Which has better battery life, Nexus 4/5? - General Questions and Answers

So I've look around the google and can't seem to find a comparison of each phones battery life, they only mention stuff on paper like talk time/stand by time. I am looking for a battery test that compares both devices. Anyone here have compared both of these phones? Is the 200mah bump a difference or none at all because of more power hungry hardware?

Im not really sure. And it also happens to matter that how you use it will affect battery.
But use gsmarena to full compare specs and decide yourself.
I would say the nexus 5 but OS code matters too. So if you are running 4.4 you will get much better battery life.

That's my dilemma, because when I look it up the web I only see spec comparisons but no actual benchmarks.
I hope someone can make a battery test using both devices running a battery test app.

If your looking to choose a device it would be n5 obviously but for comparison it would be best if you did a hands on and provided details for this test. (It obviously hasnt been compared yet so you should compare the two I mean someones gotta do it right?)
Now I don't have either phone so if you need a user to provide testing help you will have to ask around.
Have fun!

Where is the dual hd projectors?
Quite impressed but I agree with the author - instead of focusing on putting out faster processors that barely make a difference with the apps that we have, they should really work on increasing battery life. If the 2ghz makes the battery last a shorter time than my Captivate then it just isn't worth it. I'd much rather have the same specs we have now but with a battery that can last 2 full days with normal use instead of one. I'm not saying I'm unhappy with my current battery life, it easily gets me through a day, but I'd prefer to only charge every other day if the option was there.

I'd honestly be much more excited to see samsung commit to gingerbread for its current (and still top of the market) generation
I appreciate the bump of the screen to "4.3 in" I tested my friend's droid x, and I like how "full" it feels XD
This speculation looks cool, but even if it is "real" it would most likely be push back to like Q4 of 2011, Honestly Samsung has pushed back Froyo so much. Those stats look great but they really need to work with their software to enhance android OS for their Hummingbird CPU architecture. The snapdragon Cpu is so enhanced with Froyo, hopefully Gingerbread... hopin... the actual device looks great though. I like the slate design.

As far as bettery life is concerned I doubt it will make a huge impact. From what I've read the dual core designs don't really require much more power than their single core counterparts so I imagine they would have a 2ghz CPU designed similarly in efficiency. I'm with the idea though that it sounds like overkill but if you put the hardware out someone will find a way to use it. With this phone being as fast as it is ill imagine ill be able to ride out my contract with it no problem. I like having the latest and greatest but if nothing really takes advantage of it before the next Gen comes out its not worth it. It is amazing to see the strides these smartphones are taking.
Cool. But it's so worthless.
the 1ghz hummingbird processor is fast enough for EVERYTHING.
And the design.. it's nothing special. All these phones are looking for and more alike (iphone shape-ish). They need to create something a bit more fancy.

Agreed. I want to buy the Otterbox case when it comes out, but I really don't want to cover up the phone's good looks with it. The checkering on the back cover looks really great. And it's so slim! This is a dilemma of great proportions.

I'm not a really big fan of the Captivate's design. All the curves just end up wasting space for no particular reason other than to look cool while at the same time making it so different from other phones that there are far, far fewer accessories available for us than pretty much any other 2.1/2.2 Android phone.
I like that CGI mockup of a possible Galaxy S2, it's minimalist and would be very well suited to having an aftermarket case, unlike ours, which tend to look way too rounded after putting on a case.
The thing I'm most interested in is if the AT&T version of the phone will again be a stripped down, gimped, bloatware-filled version of the international version. I will not buy another smartphone until there is one available that has a FFC and a flash. I think it's pretty silly to go through the trouble of redesigning the entire outer casing of the phone while removing features. You're just spending more money for less (it costs far more to make a separate production line for new bodies than it does to simply keep the FFC in; as we've all seen from the Vibrant mods, the FFC assembly is DIRT CHEAP).

to me I think the phone shouldn't look like it needs to be covered up with a case. I'm not so sure I understand where your coming from on the design/ accessories issue as I really have not noticed us lacking something other phones have but I really don't keep up with that stuff. I agree about the flash and FFC. I was a little disappointed when I saw a flash was not included.

Yeah. I'm with Lee on this one. If it is single core, aps will open marginally quicker with the performance limiter being the wireless network. The only benefit I can see if multitasking. I foresee a 2ghz single core phone having poor performance in battery life. A dual core properly architectured can come out with similar battery performance to single. I wish Samsung would focus on improving the current product, and understand the fact that their phones have to be hacked...not to overclock, or over perform; but to make the phone perform the way the hardware allows it to. Not what the software limits it to. I am sure they formatted the drives to preserve the battery life, and not hit the processor so hard, but hey if you roll out a 1GHZ CPU, it should run like a 1GHZ CPU. I love the hardware and look forward to an official release of Froyo. Until then the leaked version with lag fix works great for me. (GPS and all)

I hear the sound of a veteran over zealous overclocker. Let me check, what bridge (s) for pencil overclock?
I just want a higher resolution display. Not to sound like an apple fanboy but what the heck was Samsung thinking? I can see the pixels so clearly on this display (maybe cause its super amoled )

[Q] Thiking of getting a Sensation. Worth it?

Ok so, as the title implies I'm thinking of getting a Sensation on the cheapside (160€) almost brand new. However I do have a few questions:
1. Would you say the phone is worth the price?
2. Do you think it is a good phone? What's your overall experience?
3. I mostly use my phone for multitasking and gaming sometimes, so does it fit the bill? The 512RAM thing scares me, my Galaxy W said it had 512MB but it had like, 378MB. I hated how it ran out of memory.
4. How is custom rom development for the phone?
Cheers and thanks in advance

1. I think a new sensation is not worth it. You can get a used for ~120-150 USD.
2. Great experience. 2 major setbacks: bad battery life and low ram(in my opinion as I am a heavy multitasker)
Battery life can be fixed with a replacement anker battery, and ram can be fixed with turbo swap.
Disadvantages are: medium resolution screen/4.3 inch screen(kind of low for video watchers), speakers aren't that great.
3. Ram is OK. It's 768 megabytes, but that can be fixed with turbo swap space module.
4. Custom ROM development is freakin awesome. We just got the 3.4 kernel with ion allocation, USB otg, and other cool stuff. We have aosp Roms(cm9/cm10/cm10.1), sense Roms(3.6/4/4.1/4+no sense 5

I'm not going for a new one, this is as cheap as I can find second hand in my country (Portugal) and that includes ebay. It is quite the upgrade from my current (for two more days) Galaxy W and better than most alternatives I could find.
Getting a battery shouldn't be that hard, what's this anker thing though? And TurboSwap? I'll try and read up the link to see if I can learn more
Glad to hear Custom ROM development is well That's a very big factor in my phone buying decisions, actually. I don't like Sense though, so I think I'll tinker around and see what I prefer!

1) I don't know how to compare it to what's on offer today so I won't answer that
2) I'll just say I enjoyed (and still do) every moment with this phone. I get good enough battery life (and I say that as a traveler who tends to spend a lot of time away from the charger). Performance is nice (everything is smooth and I hadn't found an app that won't run because of power), and build quality is great (except for dust on screen issue which my device suffers from, it survived some nasty falls, which to compare to my dad's GS4 (which dropped from 0.5m on a floor and died), the device is just awesomly built.
3) On stock roms I got issues with that, but once you are rooted and use custom ROMs there are many tweaks available to improve your performance. I must say that CM runs silky smooth with lots of apps running in the background, while sense roms started struggling after some time (but still were good). about the lower amount of RAM than advertised, it's because the GPU reserves RAM as dedicated memory for it to work (like desktop GPUs with their own RAM).
4) Just awesome, there are many ROMs available, just like AndroidSupporter318 said, now we even have ION.
I would like to just add something to think about: Just remember we are talking about a 2 year old device, so know what you buy (no more official support from HTC, unless the end of the world comes and they decide to update it, and nothing can be guarranteed on the long run). but as it goes today, custom ROM development will continue for a while, and there are many users, so I believe as things are now it's still fine.
Edit: Forgot about this, but when compared to the GS2, at least in my opinion performance seems better, and I actually like the screen of the sensation more. These things are subjective, but that's my opinion on it.

I'm looking up this ION thing you guys mentioned, I had never heard of it. Also, I am aware I'm buying a non-supported phone by HTC, then again HTC usually drops their phones at the drop of a hat so that's not to be surprised. That's why what I look for more in a phone is community-development and build quality + hardware. Hope that makes sense!

ION is JB's new memory mangement, and it replaces ICS's PMEM.
Thanks to @SebastianFM, we can now have Sense 4+ JB roms on SEnsation XE.
I have HTC Sensation S710e and I think it is an exellent choice to buy a mobile phone like this as long as you can give it s-off with Juopunutbear S-OFF guide without to unlock bootloader.Secontly they are a big varity of custom roms and recoveries you can try on your device.
The speaker sucks.
It gets dust trapped under the screen.
Battery life is pretty bad (mine came with an Anker battery, and battery life is still pretty unimpressive).
Other than that, I've been pretty happy with mine.

1) like said before, 160€ may be overprized but if that's the common price in your region, then I guess you're still paying a relative good price. Especially since newer phones are heavily overprized these days.
2) I think it's a good phone. I like to compare my rooted sensation to brand new stock powerhouses like GS4. Even though they're much faster, the self-defined MHZ/euro ratio is much better in my case. I like the fact I can keep up well with brand new devices with my more then 2 yo device. I even outperform some phones in battery life.
the build quality is good, it's the way a decent phone should be build. Decent camera with LED and no plastic.
3) Especially after rooting, I never encountered a situation where I ran out of memory or ended up with bad perfomance. I must say I'm not an extensive multitasker, but I'll have to add that I never felt the need for a taskkiller app or such. And I keep apps running on a regular basis. I think a dual core is more then capable for multitasking, and the phone packs a decent amount of RAM.
4) amazing custom ROM support. There are plenty of flavours for both sense and no-sense ROMs. I myself am running CM10 for quite a while now and I like my former sense phone being a pure google 4.2.2. Many ROMs with a lot of tweaks, UI tuning and themes. I can boost my stock 1.2 GHz to a outstanding 1836 MHz
Since new phones are so expensive, the custom ROM support for this phone keept me hanging in on to it for a additional year. I took a SIM-only subscription because I feel no need for a replacement.
overall, you get more phone for buck wih a sensation compared to new devices.

Indeed a disadvantage, the sensation is a dust collector. Many models suffer from the little bit of dust under the screen and the speaker needs to be cleaned on a regular basis.
I don't agree with your opinion on the battery. I think you're not being relative in this case. When are you impressed? Don't expect it to last 3 days away from a charger. But 1,5 to 2 days with average use is excellent perfomance. I can reach 2 days when I only use it to check facebook, news, wheater, whatsapp and a occasional call. Don't forget that new devices wouldn't last a day in these conditions because of their huge screens and power-eating quad/octa cores.

I would say get it for the development and there are things like turbo swap to help on the memory situation.
I bought mine second hand after moving from desire HD.
I find the dev stuff to be great (currently on viper JB ROM). With an Anker battery I get 2 days out of it (I'm a light user with everything turned on) really those batterys are amazing. 2 of my friends (who are both on stock) use the battery and both are utterly amazed at the difference they make.
I do find the RAM a little on the small side but I dont notice that all that often.
Ok back then when I bought this, there weren't many phones available, but now phones companies went crazy, releasing new phones almost every 2 months, especially HTC. But I remember when I ownd all phones with my badass dual core phone, while most people only had a single core chip built in.
Apart from that, the phone itself looks kinda cool with the red lights & speakers.
But with the phones currently available, I'd suggest wait a few more months, maybe save some more money and then go to the One series.
I know a lot of people just think, a new phone came out -> current phones = all crap, but you just have to think back when this was released, it kicked ass

When buying a new phone, you should not think what it was, but what it is. Today you can't say it's a strong device (even if when released it was one of the strongest available), because there are many devices which overpower it by a significant margin.
Anyway, in my opinion, it still kicks ass

SGS3 lte upgrade to nexus 5?

Ive been eyeing up the nexus 5 for a little while now and since the patch has come out regarding the camera I'm more tempted again.
I currently use a s3 lte is it a worthwhile upgrade to the nexus 5?
How does camera quality and battery life compare between the two?
http://bit.ly/IOKdQ6
the N5 is a great device so far. the best, if you're coming from the rooting/unlocking angle.
I'm in the same situation, I have the sgs3 [I9300] international version, I already bought the n5, tomorrow it will be arriving, I will try and compare camera and overall experience such as battery, mostly camera as I am nearby a charger most of the time.

I just came from a GS3. I used it stock for a year, then on a 4.2 and 4.3 ROM for about 8 months. My GS3 was good at everything, so my main comment is that the Nexus 5 is just incrementally better at everything.
The camera is better, battery life is slightly better (though much better in standby), the screen is better, it's faster (and the GS3 wasn't exactly slow).
GS3 has a better external speaker and I did get better wifi reception on the 5gz band. Also, swappable batteries and SD card support is nice.

The camera is better, battery life is slightly better (though much better in standby), the screen is better, it's faster (and the GS3 wasn't exactly slow).
GS3 has a better external speaker and I did get better wifi reception on the 5gz band. Also, swappable batteries and SD card support is nice.

Thanks for the heads up.
I haven't seen a decent comparison between the two, so when I bought the n5 it was not clear what areas would it be better at, it's nice to know overall is better, battery life in my s3 has always been crappy so I actually use an 3600mA extended bat, I know that isn't possible with the n5 so that could be my first complain.
Camera is also a concern to me, as I like to snap pictures every now and then, nice to know it would be as good as this one at least.
As comment my sgs3 struggles with ram, it will close all my apps as it feels the need to do it, let's say watching YouTube or playing a game, it's annoying.
Anyhow, thanks pal'.

It's tough to remember my battery life on the original ROM, but with a custom ROM, it was a bit better underclocking. I never had any issues with mine. I bought a battery stick to carry with me when I think I will need more battery.
The speed is noticeable. There just isn't any waiting for multitasking.
The Nexus 5 camera I do think is better, though Samsung's camera interface is much better and offers burst mode and more customization. I prefer point and shoot, which the Nexus can be finicky, but there is an update coming any day now to fix this. Samsung still has the best front cam in the business though.
It's a better phone, but I think it goes to show how good the GS3 is for being 18 months old.

I had 2 S3s. The N5 blows it out of the water. Especially after making the camera better with the update released yesterday.
No competition in my opinion.

LG G2 or Nexus 5 coming from N4

Hi guys, I currently have someone I can buy an LG G2 from for $250 in pretty much new condition, only used for a bit and is going back to an iPhone. I currently own an N4 and love having Nexus devices--- fast updates, AOSP, etc.
I know the N5 is a stripped down G2, and I would prefer the N5 due to looks and feel, but is the better spec'd G2 a better buy at that price? Thanks in advance for any advice!

How is the G2 better spec'd, other than the battery?

Battery size, GRAM, Display quality, camera. I know the N5 has received quite a few new updates to make the camera better. Do you think the 32 gb LG G2 at $250 is a better buy?
It drove someone back to iPhone. That's not a good sign.

Display and camera can be argued both ways. You're wrong about GRAM though. The AnandTech review confirmed that the N5 also uses it.
Go with the g2

Agreed, the display is brighter on the Nexus 5 and far more accurate. The G2 is more saturated, and has better viewing angles. So depends on what you want.
Btw, where does Brian mention the GRAM? I can't find it in his review.

I don't see anything about it having GRAM?
I can't stand the LG logo on the front of the device. Would not buy it. I know its stupid but that's me.
So I've been checking out the G2 forums, it's sad how dead it is. I think I'm just going to go with the N5, buy the G2 and flip it on ebay to make the burden on my wallet easier.

Yeah, development is the best on Nexus devices. G2, IMO, also has a ridiculous looking theme. I can stand Touchwiz but the one on G2 makes me puke... I couldn't believe how bad it was when I saw it. Of course I can put on Cyanogenmod but they're not stable yet, and they're not going to be for quite a while. I would rather not have a very buggy phone.
Another thing to consider is that the G2 seems to be having some problems with its touchscreen, as far as I can tell, everyone has this issue at some point. It can be fixed temporarily by turning it off then back on, but it comes back, sometimes a few days later and sometimes the next day. It can be maddening. It's in the display section: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7517/google-nexus-5-review/5
He states "The other question was whether Nexus 5 also uses a PSR (Panel Self Refresh) type display. This display is indeed a MIPI command mode panel, the same kind of system, so yes it does include those features." This is the system the G2 uses, meaning that the phone has GRAM just like the G2 even if the review doesn't specifically call it out by name.

You just made my day
And I can confirm the battery reports that Anandtech made. Many people were finding it skeptical, including me. But Anandtech is one of the only websites that do objective testing, and making sure that the brightness is the same on all devices; unlike GSMArena which test the devices at 50% brightness.. I found another test showing that the Nexus 5 lasts longer than most phones here (they tested at 250 nits):
http://tweakers.net/reviews/3298/3/...-accuduur-weinig-capaciteit-veel-snufjes.html
But perhaps far more interestingly, they tested the battery with and without PSR, so its worth checking out..
Does make me wonder though, if Google included so many optimizations and hardware (GRAM, Audio Tunneling, and Envelope Tracking), why do people still claim bad battery life?

My guess would be a combination of heavy usage, poor cell signal, and unrealistic expectations (probably the latter more than anything).

Yeah but many people have been saying that they get more usage out of the Moto X which doesn't really add up. If the Nexus 5 lasts as long as the HTC One and the S4 (it does better), I have no idea why it is getting such bad press by the reviewers..

I can't speak for the Moto X, but I've found the battery life with the N5 to be at least as good as my S4, if not better. Maybe people have their brightness set way too high or something? Who knows.

Yeah, the brightness on the Nexus 5 is way too high, even on the lowest setting... The lowest should go lower IMO.

I had really crappy battery life at first when I got this phone, until I realized that my screen was too damn bright. I keep it set at about 1/3 now which seems to be a good balance between brightness and battery life. It's still more than bright enough for my purposes, and I'm someone who hates dim screens.

Honest Opinions Wanted - Is This Phone Still Good In 2017?

Hi all. I have a chance to possibly buy this phone and wanted honest reviews. How do people like this phone and if I happen to find a good one cheap would it be a good buy?
Any gotchas? Does it run Nougat OK?
Dude dude.. Got it since it was launched and i refuse to buy a new one. This is the most beast phone ever!
Is this enough to you? Ahah
It runs nougat smooth as butter

Depends on what price you're getting in.
Everything you throw at this phone runs smooth as f###
hey pal,
you know for these 2-3 years, i didnt bother to see the smartphone market,
i got no reason to change to a new one.. haha
Depends on you and what you want. If you want high-end camera or excellent battery performance then nope it is not. But it has average even good camera-you dont miss any details or photos can be used for social media easily- and this battery can last you for 1 day. Not official but with custom ROMS you can use very smooth and flawless noguat which is the last and newest version of the android. This specs has got me and i am very happy with my OPO and 3gigs of ram really gives you what you want. But if you want official rom support, really high end camera and high end battery life or high and gaming experience or newest SoT well this phone is not for you. Think and know what you want, then you can find your choice.
Thanks guys.

So What's your final call?
Honestly, in 2017 if you are out in the market, OnePlus One shouldn't even be an option.
Its dated, and not at par with current mid range devices. I would advise you against getting a One even though I love this phone.
It just doesn't make sense to get it 3 years after its launch.

He said he can get it at a good price. If he can get it at a good price, this phone is (which is amazing IMO) very usable in 2017.
The only BUT is the camera...but even then the camera is pretty damn good.
Once a Oneplus 4 comes out with IP68, Ill finally drop my Oneplus One.
I'm trying to find an excuse to replace mine but none really justify doing so
There isn't a single rational reason to update this phone (despite what the gear heads claim). With the right custom rom battery lasts for two days (try slim7 or nitrogen os), roms are fluid, apps open quickly and camera is on par with other cams of this size. Low light photography is a pain, and will be for several more years for all sensors of this size. Even 3/4 size consumer cameras out there struggle with this, so it won't be any better for long time.

Agreed.
Overall this phone is wonderful. Rough, tough, durable, great battery life, size, quick, good adequate camera (with the right app).
I can't kill this phone (physically or by mucking around with its OS, KitKat to Nougat).
My teen kids loved this phone's looks and performance but hated its size (when I first got it they each took it for a month test run) had they also made this in a 4.7 version, this would have been their phone of choice.
Upon this phone's demise, my next phone will likely be the Oneplus 3T.

My only reason would be IP68 and I do miss OIS sometimes for certain camera shots.
But besides that...this phone is still relevant in 2017, 3 years after its release.

It's obvious, MrObvious.
https://www.xda-developers.com/its-settled-the-oneplus-one-has-stood-the-test-of-time/
I have opo from 3 years. If you can buy one i think battery is already dated so the usage will be over limited . for 150 dollars go to xiaomi
It is still a great phone. But battery is aging and is really hard to find "genuine" replacement (after 2 years I am getting around 4h SOT before 6h-9h). Same goes for Back Cover mine is showing that 2 years of using without case and it is impossible to buy replacement. So I am going to wait for OP4 and if OP4 won't by for me I will buy used OP3 for cheap.
