note heating up? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had this tab for over a year now. Just recently, i noticed that the back heats up in less than 5mins when im playing Castle clash. It also heats up when im surfing or watching videos but not as much as when playing and usually takes longer. Ive never had this issue before until about a month ago.
This all started a few weeks of being overseas. Im afraid i might have damaged my note because where i am right now uses a higher voltage (220). Though i have a travel adapter.
Or is it because ive had it for over a year? Since all devices are bound to have problems as time goes by
Im just wondering, what can i do to prevent this? Would changing the battery help? Im not a tech person so i dont know if battery jas something to do with it.

No I dont think so. Like I said, im not a tech person, ive heard of overclocking but dont know exactly what It means or how to do it. So the answer is no.

Sounds normal for high cpu usage apps, just dont know why you have not noticed till now. If I run certin games for long it gets hot. I have 2 notes an both get warm, the pc cpu temp also goes up if running hard. More work equals more heat.

Heating Tab
I too get same problem. Mine is N8020

Didnt know that app uses so much cpu. Anyways, it gets hot in just 5 five mins of playing the game, which seems a little too fast.
It also heats up a bit when just surfing the web (without opening any games before, after, or during) which never happened before thats why I was worried.
But thanks for the input. Guess ill just have to live with it.

I haven't noticed heat with my two 8013s. They both have Cases though so maybe heat is not noticed thru the Cases.

What happans if you just boot and do nothing else.

Just to relax you on another thing you mentioned in first post, we have 240v sockets here (uk) so I'm pretty certain those 220v are fine. I also seem to remember that when it comes to electrics, a device will only pull the power it requires but I'm no electrician so don't quote me on that last sentence.
Monitor cpu usage like the guys are suggesting, they are right that more work equals more heat. Maybe you've got a rogue app drawing on cycles in the background? 2 cpu hungry apps running together would cause faster heat up

Your statment is correct. The only way to increase charge current is with a increase in charge voltage.

Battery maybe
How is your battery life.
Have you noticed any decrease in run time on the device..I have had Defective batteries on phones in the past cause this very issue. But not on either of our Note 10.1 tablets. Unless we are pushing the Cpu. Both of mine and my Spouse(Bonnies) Tables are wifi only one is 16 gb one is 32 gb.
If You are very Very concerned and kinda tech savey you could loosen the back of the device. (Search for tear down on note 10.1 on the web ) Run it and remove the back and see where the heat is coming from.
Also a loose battery connection can cause this..
Also using it While charging it. Causes Battery to heat up Big time.
Good Luck..

Sorry for the late reply.
Dont know exactly what youre asking. Are you asking if it heats up if I just boot and do nothing else? If so, then no, it doesnt heat up.
Anyways, I'll stop worrying about it since it seems like its normal, based on the replies. I probably just never noticed it before.

This is a little off topic but I have hair clippers that are meant to be used in 110v. I had to use a transformer to be able to use it here (220v), if I dont it vibrates too much and makes loud noises like its about to explode. So I thought its the same for phone/tablets.
Putting that aside, how do I see if a rogue app is running in the background? Im fairly new to android and havent really had the chance to explore. Im not rooted so if I need to root first then nvm. I dont plan on rooting for now.

Battery life is fine. Maybe decreased a little but not much. But charging time takes forever. I sometimes have to charge it longer than the the usage time, but ive read other posts that have the same problem.
Im not so I wouldnt try it. Might end up breaking my note.
It heats up on the left side of the camera if youre looking at the screen, right side ifclooking at the back.
I used to use it while charging until I read somewhere that it is bad so I stopped.

Extremely battery drain over an EDGE connection

Folks,
During the last few days, I've been dealing with a really weird way to drain a battery!
Yeah....it happens only over an active edge connection. And happens just when you active EDGE.
It drains so fast from 100% at 9AM to approximately 27% before lunch time! It's totally crazy. Never seen a behaviour like this.
Can anyone here explain me what the hell could be causing this?
Even with the original ROM, the drains is still happening...It's not an Extended ROM also.....it's all there.
Should I expect the battery ends? Should I buy a new one or who knows...maybe mine is already dead and started making jokkings around me! Gezzzzzzz.......
Thanks for any comments!
similar here when using phone as modem betwen two computer & if i touch phone its too hot battery side.using kjam....
ampv1 rom...
It sounds that too many people here got curious about this topic but only one had replied!!
I start thinking that only me needs luck???
Folks, let's share experience...please! This issue is really weird and annoying me a lot....
I'm using Pocket Battery analyzer to see how drain really works...let's see what happens...
One question still unanswered is why the battery drains ONLY over an EDGE connection and not over an usual and operational daily use?
....rgs...
In my case, the problem happens upon you connect to my EDGE network. Nothing else than this...

You could try to use a different Radio ROM. I'm not sure that's the problem though...

LOL!!!
anichillus, really don't know what's going with my battery. It started over 2.71.11 and kept going with 2.37.11....but your tip have reminded me 2.19.11 which I haven't tested yet since this issue arised. I used it in the past....maybe can be the one!
Let's see.....
Thanks buddy!

Take your battery out. If the battery is swollen, then its bad. Happened to me.
Hmmmm
You made a good point here.
I'm experiencing the same.
I have two batteries I'll test with the second and let you know.
Maybe this is because Edge is different from GPRS and it keeps the RadioRom Busy
Will have to see this
All you have to do is look at the battery. If it isn't flat or slightly concave on the surface, then the battery cells have burst. Best way is to look at it on the side. According to Motorola, my old employer, a battery has about 500 charges per life. I don't remember if they were talking about the battery's memory or the charging cells. But each time you charge it (even if while syncing or for 5 minutes) that counts as a charge! Kinda weird but seemed to be pretty true as a cellphone tech for 5 years and having a few chances to test their sometimes insane claims. But most of them were true, surprisingly.
That's really sounds interesting at this point....
Thanks for sharing....will have a look...

so I have been reading this thread and have to say something:
LithiumIon batteries are not supposed to have a "memory" but I'm sure they have a lifespan.
I am starting to believe that usb/charger may be killing the battery. however, untill I talk to some chemist at berkley or something I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.
third:
I have noticed that if I drain my battery completely, the gprs does not kill it as fast. (trying to recondition the bettery)
however, I believe it may have something to do with reflashing roms....
ok, before I start confusing everyone, here is what i did:
1.flashed my wiz quite a few times with the battery not full. the new rom seemed to think that it was.
2. I let my battery drain as much as possible before putting it on the charger (untill I got the prompt to back up my $#!+. ) 8hrs later it was almost full.
So my conclusion (since I got a new battery in feb) is that the rom may be confused about how much battery it actualy has before it turns off the charging.
I am assuming that since the insides of a battery consists of some chemical putty, the electrons may not be mixing well during quick charges. sort of like a coke bottle that it half full: you tip it to one side and let all the water drain to the bottom before picking it up, ypu have mixture, if you do it too quick, it only mixes on the surface. or immagine a pipe you are trying to force a liquid through at both ends..

[Q] cell phone cooler

hi..
when playing ingress my battery can reach up to 50 -52 degrees celius, while my CPU can go to 60-70, sometimes the phone shuts itself down.
are there any packages i can use with heat sink or something similar to vent off the heat ?

Is your phone in a case? Many of them would act as insulators, trapping heat inside. Running without a case will probably help it stay cool. Also, I think the unit will run cooler with the keyboard open.
I've got nothing to productive to contribute to this conversation other than I've noticed this too.
The phone will be unbearably hot to hold. I've tried to see if any application were running in the background, eating up resources, but there's nothing consistent that I can report. Some days my phone will go all day long without any problems. Other days, the phone just drains the battery really fast, gets really hot, and displays an over-heating message. The only thing I've been able to do is shut the phone down and remove the battery and wait a few minutes until it's cool to the touch, then put it back in.
Same and this is a relatively new issue.

I used to play Ingress about 6 months ago on my old Cliq2 and I can confirm it uses a lot of resources. My phone used to crash all the time due to, I guess, not enough memory. And it was rooted and fully debloated.
You won't be able to easily extract the heat from inside your phone. One thing you could try is to play without the back cover. Just tape the battery so that it doesn't fall. You'll have to be careful to not damage anything that will be exposed on the back though.
Another thing you can also do is slow down your CPU using some app. If using CM 10.2 it's very easy to do. Go to the performance settings and choose a lower maximum frequency.
Finally, the last idea I can offer is to tether your phone and play using a tablet. The best setup I've seen is some guy having a tethering cell phone in a backpack, with a large extra battery connected to both the cell phone and the tablet he was actually playing from. He could play all day like that.

Well we're officially supported on CM so not bad I suppose ;p
CM-10.2 will run cooler than stock due to use of AVS. This dynamically adjusts the CPU voltage levels to reduce power consumption and heat, even when the CPU is running full out.
Also note that not all CPUs are created equal. Some require significantly more power to run stable than others. If your bootloader is sending sec_pvs=fafa as a kernel commandline argument, then it means that somebody up at samsung or qualcomm has determined that your CPU needs full on maximum power, which basically means that it will be un-nice on battery and heat. PERIOD.
To reduce heat levels, run it connected to a >= 1 Amp wall charger (to keep it from sucking off the battery -- note: NOT a USB port), keyboard open (more surface area = more heat dissipation), and BACK COVER REMOVED (reduce insulation).
I've noticed that the phone can get warm, but the only time I've had overheating issues was either a) during a long rsync-over-SSH run on Wi-Fi, or b) phone left in car on a hot day with GPS and navigation (either Google or Sygic) running. The latter was fixable by running the air conditioning.
In my experience, it has just been hot enough to shut down charging, not the entire phone.
I've just ditched the case, mostly because the plastic tabs don't work very well. I'll have to see what this does to thermal behavior.

Heat issues?

Has anyone experienced hot spots on their edge? there is a huge amount of heat coming off the upper right potion of my edge.
All Notes that I have had (1-3 and the Edge) would only get warm when running hard (nav + music) while charging at the same time. The Edge seems to do the same thing, but mine doesn't get warm at all under typical use.

I've had mine since Monday and it's barely gets warm whereas my GS3 would get hot. I haven't played many graphic intensive games yet, but have watched hrs of video continuously and the i think the only heat really is coming from me holding it. Other than that, it's been exploring the phone, surfing and other everyday use.

I got mines on launch day the 14th. And it took a few days of draining it low and charing it back up before it started to last.
I remember when I first got it was it dripping to 50% really fast then start to go a bit slower from there.
But like today. I check a few emails and got on the Web and it went from 99% to 98% in 10 to 15mins vs day one where it would drop from 99% to 90 in 15mins.

Its actually pretty good. With moderate to heavy use, i get about 11 hrs but if i just let it sit with light use (checking email, light browsing etc) it drops slowly. It's at 4:45 mins now and I'm still art 91%. I wonder if your other charger is bad or an app is draining it. My nexus 7 (2013) drains on the charger if my daughter played her my little pony game. That app keeps draining in the background.

I did, it said mostly my screen. The Google auto restore installed an app I had on my heart called open mic + I never ran it but I think that might have been it. Specifically around the camera area on the back. This happens whenever I am downloading or updating software and similar activities which suggests to me it is a wifi issue (I dont have bluetooth enabled most of the time) Not sure if I should worry about this or not - the phone seems otherwise OK but does get hotter than my Note 3. In normal use, even while charging it is cool to the touch

Brand new S6 feels warm in light use

Hey guys. I'm from Brazil and I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy S6 (SM-G920I). My previous smartphone broke almost a month ago, so I may have gotten unused to a high end smartphone. It turns out that it is feeling warm during light use like browsing or Facebook. I can't tell if it started after the firmware update because it was one of the first things that I did when I turned it on for the first time. The temperatures that I am recording hovers around 38 °C to 44 °C. When I switch from Facebook to CPUz it is recording around 52 °C but starts dropping right away reaching around 43 °C. It is not hot, but it bugs me since it doesn't seem right to an octacore smartphone feel warm when browsing.
*I've just recorded a 1 minute video in ultra HD and when I switched to CPUz the temperature was at 70 °C, but also started to drop, stabilizing a little at 51 °C.
I've already cleared the cache and did a factory reset.
Do you guys think that I received a faulty smartphone?
I have the same problem on SM G920F which i bought several days before sometimes it goes around 36c battery and 63-64 cpu with no good reason for , like light usage(like messenger, snapchat) it works fine but its heating up and feels quite annoying for hand did anyone experienced same thing, and will buying a case for phone at least make feel better for hand?
Well, my phone was at 48 °C - 54 °C when it was in my front pocket and running only 4 apps on background (WhatsApp, CPUz, browsing, and outlook). It is not even hot in Brazil right now. Honestly it doesn't seem right!
It is normal. The CPU is just too powerful for heat to not build up.
Rest assured I played Walking War Robots on my phone for an hour and a half until my phone was hot enough for me to not be able to hold it comfortably. Nothing happened, I let it cool down for 10 minutes before Fast Charging it.
If it does not show any overheating message then it is not a problem.
Well considering it was built to be premium model its kinda dissapointing , like being 5 minutes on snapchat or 10 minutes of light usage makes him warm and a LOT of worse phones cant heat unless you like play games 10 minutes or really load them.If i put a case its heating like 10-15 % more.
I m suspicious because i havent seen a lot of people complaing about heating verry few people complainted about this. But phone is really great only problem (for me) is heating.

Thank you, I appreciate it.
It makes sense that such a powerful CPU would generate some heat, but at the same time simple processes like these
shouldn't cause any level of warmness. I also checked the battery temperature which could be damaging for the phone
and it didn't raise the temperature as much the CPU. My phone had just 2 days of use, so I sent it back and I'm waiting for
a replacement. I will keep you posted.

Samsung S7 Exynos Overheating or bad battery?

Basically my galaxy for some reason when I play certain games or use the phone normally the upper center part of the phone heats up a bit and the battery just goes from 90% to 80% in like 10 or 15 mins. I've been thinking about changing the battery but I'm not sure if it's the battery or the phone that has overheating problems because I dropped it over the years and the phone deteriorated.
Hi! After the latest update I noticed that too, that something is wrong with how battery is going down so fast, but I have my phone for 1,5 year, so I will change for LineageOS 16.0 soon when I find some time.

There's one thing that makes me nervous, my phone heats up quite a bit and everytime it heats up the battery just goes that's why I'm confused.
I don't feel heating in mine, so I can't say much about it, maybe it is a clearly OS problem... I had that in my Ace 2 long time ago that after one update phone started to heat, so I downgraded it and everything went back to normal.

Batteries only last around 500 charging cycles after that they often cause issues, discharging faster which in turn makes it hot and batteries don't like heat, so essentially the batt is killing itself just as its designed to do.
It doesn't matter which firmware your running if the battery is going haywire and degrading, new batt or new phone is the only solution. AND of course no phone is built to last cause Sammy wants you to keep them in business.

That makes sense, thanks for helping me, actually my phone has 3 years, I didn't know it was so old because I bought it from a friend and I asked him a few days ago when he got the phone and he told me exactly when he bought it. I'm just concerned as why my phone heats up more than normal, I've seen people with s7 and they say when they play games the phone stays relatively cool but when I play games my phone goes to like 37C° and I know it might not be that hot but it's a bit unusual for me since I've never experienced a phone get so hot, I have a lot of old and new phones and no phone goes as hot as this one
