power consumption measurement and battery questions - General Questions and Answers

Is there any way (or application) that allows to check actual mah power consumption?
I know only battery monitor widget, but it gives ridiculous results, like -700mah during ac charging( phone using more than 1500mah of power at given time is just beyond my imagination) and I can't really rely on it.
Also, is there any way to check if battery of phone is damaged? It is being said that they last about 500 charging cycles. Lately my battery discharge very fast, but I'm hesitant to replace battery without knowing if actual one is reason of my problems.
Thanks in advance for your help

[Q] Battery Starng Issue - Please Help.

Hi everybody ...
I have a strange problem with my Galaxy S2 Plus battery ...
I got my s2 over a month .. but now here is a thing :
I charged the battery and went to sleep .. as usual .. phone is idle everything was disabled (WIFI - GPS - DATA - and most of apps) .. when I woke up I found that the battery percentage is 80% .
after a while during the day it drained sharply to from 63 % to 32% in seconds ....
then a charged it so it acted normally till the night ...
the next day... got the same problem in the morning ,,, few hours later ... I charged it when it became 92% it suddenly became 100% and fully charged...
I searched over and over and haven't found a similar problem ....
My question :
Could it be the system JB 4.2 or the battery is damaged ... what should I do ??
Thank you in Advance ...
Try to calibrate the battery, install wakelock to see whats waking the phone up an instsll battery stats to check on batterry.
If everything is ok then try to reflash the ROM and then if stiill an issue use different charger if not then it must be the battery

Quick charge problem

My phone taking too much time to complete full charge. It takes 2.20 hour
What is the problem?
Also tried charging into switch off mode but same result may b it takes 2 hour, its too much. I have also use a z3 compact but those time quick charge working perfectly. Why this happening with my Sony Xperia Z3 (6653).
Is there any solution?
Thanks in advance [emoji4]
The Z3 has a much bigger battery than the Z3C. on the Z3 the battery only quick charges for the first 60% and then charges normally to protect the battery. No idea why it takes longer with quick charge on than off.

Ok. That means it's normal?
What about your phone?

Specifically, it's approximately a 3000 mAh battery, and the charge current is limited to 1500 mA (or 0.5C)
So a bit over 2 hours is exactly what you'd expect - it's by design due to the completely nonreplaceable battery (since the phone is waterproof, it's even harder to replace than in other phones with a "nonreplaceable" battery, so Sony is conservative about not abusing the battery).
z3c is a bit strange, since Sony actually charges at 0.7C up to around 60% even though it's a smaller battery/device (less able to dissipate heat)
Strange. My Z3 charges from 20% to 100% under an hour.

Anomalous battery behaviour

A friend of mine got me this screenshot about her n5 going from 80% to 0% then (after repower up) back to about 20%... how do you explain it? Unfortunately i have nothing else.
That is a sign of dying battery. I've experienced that already. Had to replace my battery. Every time I repowered my device it was loosing about 50 to 80%. Swaping the battery solved the issue.

SAME issues..started 2 days ago.. 5% - 15% - 13% - 22% all in a span of 2-3 minutes. Sure not something a FR will fix ?? (Phone is reaching 2 years)
Same issue here, although its behaving itself today. new battery on the way.

Charging help/tips

Firstly when charging overnight, does the charger keep charging it to keep it at 100%? Secondly when playing games or other battery-heavy actions but its on charge, is the battery being used or is it drawing power from the charging? The reason this is important is that I would like to play games on it, and I'm into ones that require a play session of at least an hour. I don't want to wear down the battery so soon.
When it reach 100% charger stop charging till it goes to 90% then it start to charge again.
Playing games during charge is not recommended cause it produce lot of heat and can kill ur battery quickly.
Playing games even during charging makes your phone slow discharging. I've tested it with my Z5 and Mortal Kombat. Standard chargers can't charge so fast. I don't know what about Sony fast charger because I don't have one. Maybe someone else can help.

You can keep charging while playing games if you find that the game is using more charge than the charger is giving you can buy a better charger or disable some apps using battery

When I wake up in the morning the phone is always, always at 100% and when it's plugged in during charging and reaches 100% it does not stop charging and drop to 90% it stays at 100%.
You guys must be using dodgy chargers!
It does stay at 100%, but everyone seems to be saying it drops to 90? That would be silly, it goes to 100% then powers the phone via the charger to keep the battery full.

U guys don't understand what i mean it drop to 90%(never will happen), but i mean when it reach 100% the charging will stop otherwise the battery will heat up and explode.

Like I said in my previous post, it stops charging and leaves the battery at 100% and directs the charging current to the device itself so the battery will stay full whilst charging.

The battery chargers can change the rate in which they charge, when they reach 100% the charger will drop the charging right back to a trickle to keep the phone topped up

Battery care

In the last 10 days or so, I have noticed that battery care isn't activated when I charge my phone overnight. I always check to make battery care is on and I leave my phone left on overnight too. 4 weeks previous to this issue, I hadn't been experiencing any such issues.
Any suggestions guys?

I had the same problem after previous weekend, it worked perfectly till Thursday but when I didn't charge it overnight from Friday till Sunday it stopped working and activated itself again yesterday.
Thought that it would learn that I charge the phone overnight only during work days and don't during weekends.
Still I think it's a great idea but it seems that it needs longer learning or some changes.

It's very stupid I think; they should've allowed the user to set the wake up time instead of "learning", it has never worked correctly for me, its always 1-2 hrs off which makes it kind of useless. I hope they can do it in a future update.
Still having no luck with battery care. Would a factory reset likely to resolve the issue?

They should allow to select the timewe want to charge it fully to 100% manually as well in the software update.
Or at least tie into system alarms!

I find that if I do a short charge during the day, it disrupts the Battery Care functionality (overnight) and then has to re-learn with a few normal overnight charges.
This seems to nullify the benefit of Battery Care as my phone would now sit on the charger for long periods at 100% again while re-learning...exactly what Battery Care is suppose to prevent.
I might as well just do small charges during the day when convenient so I don't have to charge overnight and "ruin" my battery further while it re-learns. Frustrating.
I really hope they get this feature sorted out.
It helps me to plug the phone in, go to settings, switch battery care off then back on and it usually works. I still keep the setting on all the time. Also I typically restart my phone after plugging it in every night and closing backround running apps. It seems to minimize any bugs I have experienced.
So I generally plug in the phone, restart it, then flick battery care off then back on and I haven't had many problems. That would be my suggestion to try
I should add that I have a US version of the phone. I flashed UK firmware then performed a software repair via Xperia companion. The last software repair I performed was probably over a month ago
Also, lesPaulGuitar, are you plugging your phone in for a short charge during the day because without doing so you would not have enough charge to reach the end of the day? If not, i suggest avoiding uneccesary cycles on your battery. Every additional cycle you put on it. Wether charging from 50% to 100% or from 40% to 80%, an additional cycle will reduce over all cycle life. Especially if the cycles aren't complete (as in not charging fully before discharging again). While lithium ion doesn't develop a memory it does still have a limited cycle life
This **** is stupid and useless without user input. Why can't I choose the times? I know everything better. Not everybody has dedicated times for work or. School.

Does the phone need to be left turned on during the night while charging for this to work? I have the phone coming and I was under the impression that this battery feature would work even with the phone turned off. Any clarification is appreciated.

I have also tried turning Battery Care on and off with no success unless it was already dialed in to begin with. In that event, it would then work. I'll try restarting the phone first next time it acts up...although I think I've done that too before.
Regarding small charges during the day, it is usually due to not starting the day with a full charge such as when ending the previous day with, say, 50% left or so. Or it could be due to the battery running out before the day is finished from heavy camera use, etc.
My understanding about L-ION batteries is that small charges that add up 100% in total (like five separate 20% charges) equal one charge cycle. So no harm doing small charges...

I'm pretty sure that that phone needs to be on because it is a piece of software that needs to run which controls it.
That said, I've not tested it with the phone off.
Any time you reverse the charge current is one cycle. How far down you discharge is your depth of discharge. So even if you drain the phone from 80% to 70% and plug it in and only charge it back up to 80%, that's one cycle. What you are saying would be true if you don't discharge the battery at all, similar to what Sony does with their battery care. You can charge lithium in short bursts but if you discharge between those charges then you are cycling your battery. So no, short incomplete charges aren't absolutely detrimental to your battery but will be considered in regards to your overall cycle life. For every 70 millivolt (roughly 10%) drop in voltage during a cycle, your overall cycle life is cut in half. Meaning you'll get twice as many cycles if you only drain your phone to 60% instead of 50%. To take full advantage of the chemistry, it is best to fully charge before discharging. You could expect 2500-3000 cycles at 10% depth of discharge, but only 500-700 or so at 50% depth of discharge before capacity is 70% of what it's rated. This is information I got from Cadex Labratories and deal with on a daily basis at work.
Hershchel Clogs, does the Qnovo battery technology seem sound based your battery knowledge? Also, thanks for sharing.

Should I follow this suggestion? Or keep small cycle of charges by using accubattery suggestion to plug off when I reach 80%?
