[Q] Touch screen unresponsive - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having strange problems with my nexus 5 where occasionally the touch screen will completely stop responding to input. The phone hasn't frozen -- I can still interact using the volume/lock buttons, but the touch inputs aren't picked up.
The issue just goes away after a while (it lasts between a few seconds and a few minutes usually). Rebooting the phone doesn't usually help, and I suspect that it's just fixing itself when I reboot it and it does help.
Is there any chance of this being a software issue, or should I just send it back as a hardware issue? I'm going to try a factory reset tonight to see if that does anything but otherwise I'm pretty stumped..

Does it only happen when plugged in and charging? That's when mine has issues...

No, it happens completely at random as far as I can make out, including when not charging. I've also done a factory reset and nothing seems to have changed.
Update: I called Google and ordered a replacement, which they say will arrive in 4-5 weeks, which seems an absurd time to wait to me.

Screen Unresponsive

Once yesterday and already once again today I have pressed the power button to wake up my tablet and the lock screen appears but is unresponsive to any swipes or taps. I finally have to press and hold the power button to reboot the tablet.*
I deleted Boat Browser but that didn't help. Every time I reboot it works good until it goes to sleep but I then when I wake it up the screen won't respond to anything. I have to press and hold the power button to reboot it again..
Any ideas?
Are your rooted?
Did you update to the latest firmware while rooted?

Sounds like a faulty unit, you can try a master reset and check if it resolves the problem otherwise get it exchanged for another one.
Not rooted. I did the update with no problem a couple days ago. I guess I will do the reset tonight.
If you are an 8013 (wifi usa) unit ODIN the unrooted firmware package in development thread. Should fix problem.

I did a factory reset today (US WiFi only version) and the screen still fails to respond. My tablet is completely stock, never rooted once.

Hahaha this is happening to me. Was playing Dead Trigger until the battery depleted and shut off the tablet. I plugged it into the charger and powered it on but touch input didn't appear to be working. But if I boot into CWM then reboot from there touch input comes back initially until it goes to sleep then lose touch input again. Going to let her fully charge up then look into it some more. I'm not sweating because I'm pretty sure worst I can reimage with stock and restore everything.
Update: It's charged up to 23% and touch input is working normally again. So, the moral of the story is digitizer pen plus touch input probably won't work if battery is drained very low.

Mine gave me trouble for little while but it came back on and it's been working fine ever since . Click on disable pen sensor and leave it like that .
It does not disable it but it helps for some reason . Update all the apps too . That's how mine started working again . ( but I don't know when . I forgot that pen is not working , I puled it out and started using it and then I realized that its working )

Ok, i seemed to have found the problem. I was on vacation for the last 3 days, and I had forgotten my S-Pen at home. On the last night I began encountering these problems. I have just gotten home and was able to test the tab with the S-Pen and it was not accepting the S-Pen input at all. I restarted the tablet, with the S-Pen in its holder this. Now everything works perfect! This was very strange but I am glad that it is working now.

Nexus 5 screen died today + dangerously hot lower screen

Went to unlock my phone this morning off the charger and the screen is totally dead. Couldn't unlock or do anything to it or even see what was going on, called Google and ordered a replacement ASAP.
Went through the not fun task of doing a nandroid backup without seeing what was on the screen and doing some trickery with screenshots then backing up my entire SD card.
However, here's the strange and potentially dangerous thing that I noticed later when I got home this evening. I went to look at the phone and go to a fastboot flash with the factory images and went to touch the bottom of the screen. When I went to do so, to the little bit of the left of the LED light was a SUPER hot portion of the phone. I almost burnt my finger it was so hot.
Not sure what to do about the issue, I feel like if I just call the support line they won't actually take in my concern legitimately. Any suggestions?
thats something quite strange
let us know what google says about RMA and this issue
Agree, maybe it's just your phone, maybe it's all the batch. Which batch/model do you have?

On my Transformer Infinity, sometimes the screen won't turn on at all. On a few occasions, if I press Power enough times, I get a glimpse of a message saying the Launcher process has stopped, but then my touchscreen doesn't register any input. The tablet is also sometimes running quite hot at those times. The only way I know to recover from this is press the Power button long enough to force a reboot, then everything is normal. Could this be what's happening? Do you know if the phone is still running under the black screen? Have you tried forcing a reboot, and did it work?
As for the hot phone, I've noticed my N5 does get a bit warm when I'm using it intensively (4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and screen on all at the same time and in use) but not enough to burn me. Could be hard to tell which component is heating up like that since I think it could be the screen backlight, SoC or battery... Do let us know if you find out more.

I had called them and reported the screen totally dead with lines streaking vertically and got a new replacement ordered. It wasn't until late last night when I got back and had the screen on in this dead mode that the bottom was extremely hot. I'll have to call them back and let them know

Yeah hopefully, it definitely seems like it could be one of those things that could potentially start fire. The one I have is the LG-D820. Any more info I can provide?

Yeah, no its definitely dead. There were streaked lines across it, rebooted it multiple times. I ended up going into the bootloader and recovery via adb/fastboot and all that jazz. It eventually just would not work now.
In regards to the hot part I definitely think it was the lower part of the screen. It was quite literally half an inch away from the LED to the left. Was super super hot then once I shut the defective screen off (I could tell by the backlit light or whatever) it wasn't hot anymore after a minute or so.
Is it black/white? 16 or 32? When did you get it?

32gb black version. I ordered it immediately when they announced it that day.
mine gets really warm when i'm doing a TWRP backup then it goes into bootloop after and wont cool down. i have to force it to power off from recovery and let it cool, but i've always seen it happen. i wonder if yours was attempting to boot over and over for hours and cooked itself.....? i have a launch day black 32gb too, running Cataclysm with Franco at the moment but it was doing it on rooted stock with stock kernel
I had to send my 19 day old 32Gb Red Nexus 5 in to LG for the same reason. I was using the phone and all of the sudden had vertical lines and the bottom of the screen got burn your fingers hot. Waiting to see what LG does with my phone. The only thin I can figure is the synaptics chip which controls the screen is bad. Its the only thing in that area that could get that hot. I also noticed when I first got my phone the glass in the same area looked like it had a slight wave in it. Didn't think anything of it at the time. I'll let you know how it goes.
Is RMA/replacement applicable for Rooted and unlocked devices?
I don't believe its an issue with developer phones as long as the issue wasn't caused by something you did like brick it by flashing a wrong radio or something like that. It has to be a manufacture defect to get it fixed for free.

My device issue is related to power button. there is no software issue.
The power button is rattling since from the purchase of the device.
Hope my device gets repaired.
Like I said. Hardware issues that are production faults should be covered.

[Q] [HELP] Phone suddenly freeze and show weird screen

Hi, I have been looking all over the internet and search the xda thread but I couldn't find anything related to my problem.
So this morning when I wake up, I turned on my phone and after I used it for awhile suddenly my phone stopped working (freeze/hang) and started to reboot itself. After it reboots my phone's screen as per attached below.
The problem lasted for a day and started to driving me nuts!
Anyone experienced same problem?
I am running KK4.4.2 fyki.
Thank you very much for your kind help!
are you unlocked, rooted, custom recovery, rom, kernel, anything? can you access the bootloader?

Is it just randomly happening?

Yes, it just randomly happening. It started yesterday morning until now..
The phone started to not responding at all and then my screen goes broken (same screen as broken TV I might say).
If I let it cool for 15-20 minutes the phone is usable, but then after 1 hour of normal usage the phone started to freeze again.
Just curious, none of you experienced the same?
this kinda looks like the static i was getting on screen on my n7 2012 when i let the battery get too low. charging it up and a few reboots fixed it. but im not sure if that's what is going on with yours

I just got mine, 32gb from the playstore, a few days ago, and nothing like that.
If it's happening when your device is hot | overheating, you may wana see if you get it replaced.
It happened to me once. The phone was with his screen off and when I try to turn it on that exact same screen came. But it just happened once, also I experienced random poweroffs and reboots. I did a factory reset and power off issues and freeze stops, but had one reboot once I start installing my apps. I think its a software issue but I'm not sure.

I'm glad (and kinda of sad) to know that I'm not the only one with this issue.
The problem started about two weeks after I bought mine(Telus). It's done this about 5 or 6 times, randomly.
I found that having someone call me will "unfreeze" the device and the screen gets back to normal.
The first couple times it happened, I was running stock 4.4.2. I since rooted it and installed Xpposed/GravityBox and I'm still getting the problem...
I think that I'll have to return it...

Hi, I have the exact same problem, I posted a video on youtube /watch?v=m0EkC_ak01g but I got to the same conclusion that it might be a GPU issue. So there is nothing I can do right?, the worst thing is Im in Argentina and LG dont take my warranty because I bought it in Germany. So there is absolutely nothing I can do?, I know how to avoid the flickering a little bit, when I hit "Ok Google" button it seems responsive and as long as I touch the screen it works (you can see it in the video) but as soon as I stop touching it, after 2-3 seconds it becomes unresponsive again, and when I say unresponsive Im saying the screen doesnt reflect what Im doing, I can still push the buttons and all. So Im not 100% sure its a GPU issue, but a software too. Thanks.

Nexus 5 Black Screen, But Still Working

So my Nexus 5 (a couple months ago) has started to just randomly go black. I get notifications and stuff, and the backlight but no display. Not sure what to do or what part to replace. Would flashing/rooting help at all?
Appears to be a hardware problem.
Was the phone every dropped or exposed to water/moisture? Possible loose connection inside?
No way to tell for sure if the phone needs a new screen unless you are able to test the motherboard in another N5.

It's been dropped a couple times but not like any major drops or anything. Im pretty sure I checked all the connections inside and they were good. Im starting to figure out that the phone has to be off for a little bit then I have to charge it and turn it on and it works again
Sounds like it could be a damaged lcd or lcd connection. If it can work after being charged while powered off, could be battery or USB flex cable issue.

Ya I figured out I have to reboot it a bunch of times then it will work
I think it might be the battery because this is my dad's old phone so it's been in use for a solid 3 years.. I wish I knew for sure though
So I have discovered that if my screen is on for a while the task bar at the bottom starts to shift up and down
Have you found out more about this? I think I have the same problem. My phone never turns black while I use it. But when the screen is off/sleeping, it sometimes won't turn on again. So a force reboot fixes it. Sometimes this happens a lot, some times it works fine a whole day.

Maybe, I don't think so. My phone was useless, black screen on every screen unlock. But namelessrom took that away, so that tip about nameless was for those who have the same black screen I had earlier. But now I have the same black screens as you do. Anyway, if you want to try it out, nameless-rom.org

Happens with my nexus too. The screen goes blank randomly ..... But i have managed to deal with it.
Its happan to me also, with 4 nexus 5 of my family.
Is a firmware problem?
I'm trying to buy a new flex cable to see if it will help I'll update when I find out
You're replacing the USB charging flex cable? If you are, be careful with cheap third-party replacements as I have read reports of people having issues with charging, signal, or speaker functionality after installing the cable.

Ya so i sent it to LG finally and the diagnostic said that it was a flex cable issue which I was sure that it was anyway but I have a confirmation now
I've had a similar problem when my display suddenly started failing. First, there was colourful bands over the working display, then colourful static only and then black with backlight only. Bought a new phone, left it for a year and today after digging in the phone for a while I found a fix. The connection between the motherboard (the top bit) and the daughter board (the bit below battery with USB and connection to display) was somewhat loose and when pressed on, the display worked beautifully. I stuffed the insides with some tape to maintain pressure on the connection and phone works great.
Might not work for your problem, but it's worth a try if you're out of warranty and have tools to disassemble the phone.

Google NExus 5 will suddenly turned dark and will not start!

Hello,
yesterday I wanted to check my Nexus 5 phone, but it was all black. Since then it has just remained black, and it does not respond to the charger as I charge the phone and it just remains black. It has happened since then a few times that it vibrates as I use the "turn on" button on the right side, but nothing else happens, and the display doesn't show anything.
Has anyone got any idea what might cause the trouble? I maybe thought about the battery, but since it has accidentally vibrated a few times, it might be something else?
I hope someone can come with advise. The phone was almost fully charged as it went black yesterday.
Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the advise. I do not think that is so, because the phone doesn't seem to work properly at all, meaning that it isn't just the screen that is dark. If I try to turn it on, it vibrates, but nothing else happens. It doesn't react as I connect it with a USB, and I can not use any functions on the phone. So, I have a feeling the problem is bigger than just the screen connector, but it still might be that you are right. Is the screen connector just about showing the picture, or is it also about reacting to whatever I might press at the screen?
have you recently fixed your phone using unoriginal parts? I had similar problems after replacing the back cover of my Nexus 5.
