Scratch / chip on screen? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my nexus 5 today. Everything looked great, however, I just noticed there's a tiny something on the screen. At first, I thought it was a dead pixel, but then I noticed that it is actually a physical imperfection on the screen.
What do you guys think I should do? Everything else works well on the phone. I'm worried if I send it back, it'll take weeks to get another one, plus I don't want to get one with other problems! argh!

Contact Google play store - they may cross ship the phone, so you can keep your phone till you get the replacement. (I suspect they will put a hold on your credit card - just in case)

[Q] Busted LCD got blue screen?

Okay strait to the point! I've got a Galaxy S2 with Android 4.0.3 bought it 4 months ago.
I accidently dropped my phone and cracked my screen on the bottom right corner. The crack went from bottom and a diagonal line up til the right side. I took a picture below.
imageshack(.)us/photo/my-images/685/20120326152703.jpg
This happened about 2 months ago. No problem since. I dropped the phone a few times afterward but it didnt seem to affect it lucky me.
Yesterday i tried watch some series over my WIFI and the phone got really hot around the camera area. The phone wasn't acting well either and then battery dropped from 75% til about 10% in 10 minutes without any video still showing up. (Never had that problem before). I stopped using it and instead put it on recharge for the next day. And today on the morning it was still okay. Went to school and back with the mobile still working. Put it on my table and checked my PC.
About 2 hours later while cheking up on my galaxy i discovered this.
imageshack(.)us/photo/my-images/198/20120326153629.jpg
I think that the LCD finally busted but i need to be sure if it has something to do with the previous crack and also if you could provide any info about what to do with it? Does my warrenty cover this? Or do i need extra insuranse?
I really need help right now LCD blackned spots
The screen has started to turn black from the core of the LCD leak. I now really think this is a broken LCD screen and not a software problem. If someone knows what i could do to fix this i really could need the help right now.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong,
But it sounds to me like you've busted the digitizer portion of your device. As to it being caused by the small crack on your screen.. i don't really know(can't really see if it's a crack in the glass or digi). At any rate, judging from the second picture you provided us it most definitely looks like you damaged the digitizer.
Most companies don't really cover damaged screens caused by users. However, being that your S2 is only 4 months old you could possibly pass it as "it did it by itself, I don't know what happen". Worth a shot I guess...
If all fails you could bring it to a electronics repair shop or you can repair it yourself via a digitizer part bought on ebay(probably pretty expensive being that its part of the screen)
If all else fails check ebay for a new screen.

If your thinking about taking the DIY road I found a screen for you.Quick note about buying something overseas on eBay: it usually takes awhile for the part to ship and even when you get it, the part may not be functional. But don't fret, eBay is usually pretty good about stuff like this so a working part will be guaranteed or your money back!
If you do decide to repair it yourself I would first research A LOT about your phone. Especially, the disassembly guide! Try to use only credible guides such as iFixit, repair universe etc.
This only applies to flex ribbon cables:
when replacing screens sometimes you have to plug it in a few times before you actually get it to respond(could be cause by oxidation of the pins) if thats the case, you could try to take a #2 pencil eraser and gently rub against the pins and remove the oxidation...
Good Luck!
Please let me know how it goes!

Yes it is really a crack and a very annoying one. It doesn't cause any problems with the touch-function, so I've been using it normally but for the screen, it has gone completely black but for the top right part still a little darkblue. I think I'm going with your first answer and try to check it in on warranty have had a bit luck with it past couple of times but im not sure about changing it myself. If having no luck with warranty then maybe ill try doing it myself.
at any rate weather you get warranty to change it or you fix it yourself maybe youll learn to be more careful and get a case maybe???

Dirt in screen Verizon galaxy s3

Alright so I got my gs3 today and I recently noticed that there is a piece of dust near the top of the display. I know it is dust because it is still visible with the screen off. I'm not really bothered by it considering it's about the size of a pixel. Do you recommend I attempt to exchange it, or just live with it. It's in the notification bar and is almost never visible and I didn't notice it the first time I checked it for dead pixels.

If it doesn't bother you I would just keep it. It is a major hassle switching out phones and the stores will generally fight you tooth and nail to keep from allowing the exchange unless the phone is really defective. Good luck!

To be honest I have more crap stuck in between my screen protector and the Glass. It's hardly noticeable so I'm not really worried. I know if I go into a vzw store they will be difficult. Even if I get a new one it could have a dead pixel smack dab in the center. Still an awesome phone.
It was a huge pain getting my Galaxy S3 replaced at a Verizon store for a legitimate problem- I had a dead pixel. The employee helping me refused to replace it, until finally the manager came and looked at it, deeming it a legitimate problem and allowed me a swap for a new device.
So if it doesn't bother you, don't worry about it.
I had my first GS3 replaced by T-Mobile. Right after I called they sent a brand new one overnight at no cost to me. Sent first phone back with the included return shipping label. Everything was easy as pie.

I am in Canada but I imagine it still works the same. I never go into the store to deal with problems like that. Call them up (not the individual store). The people on the other end are used to dealing with that all day and have the policy down pat. I would believe they would resolve the issue immediately and send a replacement. At the minimum you will be opening a ticket (file) about the issue. An remember polite and firm, if the original person you are dealing with cannot resolve to your satisfaction request talking to a manager. They have more latitude when dealing with issues.
An I am sorry it's brand new. You are entitled to have it in perfect working condition including not having trapped dust. Give them a call.
P.S. An yes you are bothered by it, or you would of never taken the time to Create your OP. An I would be bothered by it as well.
Good luck.
I'm debating because right now I am bothered by it, but I know in a little while I really won't care. I'll see if I can get it replaced, but if I can't it won't be the end of the world.

Ha Ha, well I got two new ones. the second one had a dead pixel right in the middle.
Dirt Or Dead Pixel Under Screen
I just went through this myself, I bought a new S3 from Future Shop, it was great for the first 7 days then I just happened to have a grey wallpaper up and I noticed faint black lines almost in the middle of the screen and they ran from the top to the bottom, and as I scrolled the wallpaper back and forth they were very noticeable, I myself am the type of guy that now that I know its there it drives me crazy, I ended up taking it into the store and the sales rep looked at it and pulled another out to compare, he sat there for 10 minutes comparing it and finally told me the new one has the same lines but refused to show me it. So I took my phone and left. After I get home just before bed I noticed a black dot near the top, I tried wiping it off for I thought it was dust but it did not move, I could not figure out what it was, I thought dust but how did it get there in a matter of a few hours when I don't put my phone anywhere that it could cause dust to get into the screen like that, I ended up shinning a light on it with the screen off and it was not there so it was a pixel issue, I ended up going back to the store this morning where I had to argue and complain for 20 minutes before they finally exchanged it as they tried telling me it was dust behind the screen, anyway the new one is perfect. There should be no issue when you want to return or exchange your phone especially when you just shelled out $600 to buy it. But I suppose with the mass production of these phones there is bound to be issues with some.

Nexus 5 faulty screen (or GPU)

Hi guys,
I guess I am the unlucky one. Received my N5 yesterday, started playing with it late evening (21:00'ish). Installed apps, copied over some music, etc - everything worked perfect! I went to sleep...
This morning when I woke up, I saw THIS (see attach). It is clearly a hardware issue - either the screen or GPU. When you switch the phone on, the "vertical lines" appear after about a second. They may change intensity or pattern when you flick desktops, etc. They may even go away after you have had your screen on for some minutes (once it gets "warm" enough). Switch the phone off, wait for some 20 seconds, switch it back on - voila! It's back!
Anyone else experienced this? (hopefully not)
Wow that sucks big time. I dont have that issue on my Nexus 5 16gb. Hope you get a replacement soon.
Just called Google. The support was very good, no silly questions like "have you tried switching it off and on again?". A replacement device will be with me within some days *fingerscrossed*

Shhiiieeeeeeete....
Yes, that is exactly what I have, but on mine only lower 3cm of the screen are affected. The 'banding' sometimes goes away if I play with the phone for a while. Sometimes it comes back. Sometimes it flickers.
Replacement device is already on its way, I suppose?
Humn. Odd that it cuts off at that fraction of the screen...or I'd say GPU banding.
I'm guessing screen. That sucks man, sorry to hear that!
But yeah...Google seems to give the customers the benefit of the doubt in terms of not making them feel like idiots.
May I ask...
Are they sending a replacement before you send yours in?
And I'm assuming a "new" device and not a "refurbished" (doubt they even have 'em at this point) device?
Major bummer if not. If so...that's pretty cool, and I suppose you can deal with a shotty screen for a few days.

Well, the 'return' and 'replacement' happen independently. It works like this:
1) Some 30 mins after we spoke, the guy emailed me a link. I click on it and order a replacement device, delivered to my address.
2) An amount of GBP 349 is getting *frozen* on my Google Wallet account (they do not take the money, but reserve it as a deposit). My Wallet is linked to a debit card, I checked it and I see 349 GBP reserved.
3) The old phone is to be sent to them via UPS. I should attach a "Prepaid UPS label" to the package so that Google could cover the return shipping costs.
4) once they receive the broken phone, the money on my Google Wallet account are released.
I can send an old phone to them now, or I can wait for the new one to arrive. They have asked me politely to use good packing materials, so I'll probably wait for the new phone to arrive and then will just cannibalize the card box
And as far as I know, it HAS TO be a brand new phone. I have called them some hours after opening the box, so technically I could have just returned it under the 'distance purchase' regulations and claimed my money back (to buy another phone afterwards).

Fingers crossed
Looks to be a GPU related issue.I used to repair phones for a living and see a LOT of this with the HTC one and the one x. Great that Google are replacing no questions. Hope is isolated and not a manufacturing defect.

Ok. After RMAing the first device due to a faulty screen (GPU banding) I have finally received a replacement one.
- no dead pixels (at least after a quick test using PixelTest)
- almost no rattle (I mean I can move the buttons with my finger and they'll probably become looser, but no rattle now, shaking my phone as much as I want ))
- screen is good - no GPU banding, otherwise I wouldn't have been writing this.
- no lightbleed noticed (again, using PixelTest on 'very dark' backgrounds)
- vibration sounds quiet. As it should.
- vibration strength is probably a liiiiiiiittle bit weaker than on my 1st N5 when pressing softkeys, unlocking, etc. For calls - it buzzes very well.
All in all, I think, I have finally got a very good device *fingers-and-toes-crossed-ten-times*.

Home button loose

Does anyone else have loose home button on their phone? It makes noises when you lightly tap on it and doesn't sound too good. I've also went to the T-Mobile store today and noticed my home button is more flush than the both display models they had. Anyone else face the same issue?

If it feels off go in and have them pull out a brand new one. When there in store. If yours feels off, have it replaced! I do this with any new phone. I tediously inspect it. If I think something feels off I have them show me a new one and compare. That way I can show them right then and there, this is why you're going to give me another phone lol

I have a feeling my front glass is slightly misaligned. Will be checking the store model to make sure, as the corner by the back button seems a bit sunken in. The frame definitely comes up over the glass a little.
I was just in the Samsung Experience Store and noticed that of the four regular S6s they had, three had loose homebuttons. The Edges seemed fine though.
My t mobile version is a bit loose as well. It feels like a minor issue but it is pretty annoying....
I picked up my S6 this morning and have noticed that a light tap on the home button makes a noise. It's annoying and it makes an otherwise solid feeling, quality phone feel cheap. I guess I'll try taking it back to see if I can get another one that doesn't have this issue.
The frame is suppose to slightly overlap the screen by the way
I actually returned my T mobile version for another, and the other has the exact same loose button
Well i noticed it after you guys wrote about it here. I have a S6 32Gig White, a friend has a S6 64gig Black version, i checked his S6 and he doesn't have this issue.
But honestly, it is not like i tap on the button all the time, you can only hear it if you slightly tap on it. If you fully press it, you don't even hear it. It is also not like it makes any sounds when moving the phone, therefore i am not going through all the pain to get this replaced just to receive another one with a loose button

Yeah, if I didn't have this Edge without the issue it might not bother me so much
I went back to the T-Mo store and their display model had it. One of the guys opened another one up for me and it too was affected. I ended up walking out with the phone I had. Not gonna make them open a bunch of boxes until they find one that doesn't. At this point the ratio makes it seem like the loose button is normal and any that aren't are the odd ones. Ah well.

Well i was wrong about it not bothering me It started annoying me after you guys wrote about it...
I went to a T-Mobile store to check if the devices had the same problem, and yes 2 of them had, 1 did not...
Dunno if it is worth to send it back now and wait up to 6 days to receive a replacement that has probably the same issue -.-
P.s. After pressing the button down very hard a few times, the right side stopped making noises, the mid now also seems to be fine, it can only be heared if touching the very left side of the button...
Same issue here. The left side of the home button rattles a little bit when i press lightly on it. Should i exchange or is it normal?

Dammm....busted screen!

After 5 months of use, I managed to break my screen....dam it! I've always been quite careful with my electronics, but managed to drop it today. And of course like a cat always lands on 4 legs, phones usually land face down.
Broke the top of the screen and the touch screen is rendered useless. Put an RMA in with Alcatel. I've read others on the internet have managed to get a claim in and Alcatel fixed it for a little better than $100. I would pay the $100, as opposed to buying a new phone.
Questions I have:
1. Since I can't get into my phone, is there any other way to get any data off of it? LCD is still visible, just can't get in.
2. Has anybody had a "positive" experience with getting a glass screen fixed on this phone yet? I've read a few breaks in the forum here, but it doesn't seem like too many have followed through with the repair experience.
3. Are, or is there any advice with regards to this phone and the broke screen?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Dang that sucks......so to get data you can plug it into a computer and the computer should let you pull all your info off. Also I can't help you with the getting the screen fixed as I never broke a screen on my phone.

Have you tried using an otg cable and wireless keyboard/mouse?
Yes , I tried using the OTG , but the lockscreen needs to be unlocked for the computer to communicate with both the internal and SD card storage areas. The back door is locked.
I submitted an RMA to Alcatel and am waiting for further instructions in a repair. Hopefully it won't set me back too much. If it does then I'll just pick up a used one through Swappa.
Thanks for the help.
Sent back to Alcatel. $105 to replace the busted digitizer and ship it back. Hopefully they didn't wipe my phone with a hard factory reset, I requested they not.
Should have it back Tuesday.
Just a follow up with the replacement of the digitizer. Alcatel sent the phone back to me yesterday and they wiped the hard drive with a factory reset, despite my request not to.
Phone works very well now though, I must say. Mostly all my data and apps loaded right in with ease, just lost some texts and a small folder of downloads and photos that were on the phone. Not all was lost.
Don't seem to have SD card issues any longer now, like I had before, which I find interesting. Must be the hard reset that had something to do with that, but my 3rd party launcher always used to struggle to load app icons properly, the SD card would some times not read properly? All that seems much smoother now however.
Cost me $105, oh well...time to get myself a better glass screen protector and case. I had an LK case w/ a kickstand and a peel off screen protector prior. I'll be stepping that up a notch now. One more break of this phone, I'm moving on to a different device.
Peace.
