ART runtime instead of Dalvik. Any issues? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone else running the ART runtime instead of the old Dalvik? I've notice it's MUCH faster, but I was wondering if anyone had any issues with it. I believe it may be causing to Titanium Backup to force close upon opening, but other than that it seems to be working pretty well. It takes FOREVER to cache apps on the first reboot though.

I'm in the process of rebooting right now with it. You're right, this is taking a while to do. I'll let you know if I come across any issues.

I switched over about half an hour ago. Seems to be running smooth.

I did it last night, battery life seems better BUT it could be placebo. A few more days with it will tell me.

I've heard Whatsapp have problems with it.
I hope all devs will move to it quickly, it seems like an awesome improvement

I've been using it for a few hours no issues so far looking forward to running it a full day tomorrow see if it helps battery at all but definitely running smooth

Been running it since my last post in this thread and no issues so far. FWIW, I'm also using LMT pie controls and there's no conflicts that I see, not that it's any different than any other rooted app, but it's a good sign, I think.

Can some people please do some battery life tests/benchmarks to show the difference between ART and dalvik ? I'd appreciate it if you did so
I REALLY want to see how ART compares to dalvik

I believe someone posted a comparison between some sort of times between ART and dalvik, and I believe ART was twice as fast, and didn't have as many spikes. Many someone can link it? I believe it was a google doc?

I don't put much stock in benchmarks, but the one I do put some stock in is Epic Citadel. Here's my screenshots with ART. Didn't think to do it with Dalvik before I switched and I'm not switching back, so maybe someone else could post their Dalvik ones.

TitaniumBackup is also broken under ART.

The xda app launches significantly faster on art. Switched back a few times to try it. It takes a second or so to start displaying content on dalvik, but loads instantly on art

Report - If I have ART, then IGO navigation can't be installed - problem with installation. In DALVIK, it works as it should.

No issues from my side.
Phone is really snappy, feels a lot faster than using dalvik.

The only problem i have is with Whatsapp. All the other apps works just fine.

Tried it and facebook took an age to launch and then crashed but after that it seemed ok and yeah whatsapp does not work whatsoever so gone back to dalvic for the meantime.

Guys, can you let me know if you experience any issues with the Compass/screen rotation/accelerometer/gyroscope using ART.
I switched to ART to try it out, it runs great but I did experience issues with the above so I switched back - mind you I have had the same problem once using the standard Dalvik as well since then.

Titanium and greenify both fc.

Can't find a stable ROM, is it the apps I'm using?

I've tested several ROMs, Infused, Serendipity, DarkyRom, going to try gsinfused next.
I routinely have problems with a very laggy phone, I have a live wallpaper running(which I love), and I always have trillian running. Most of the time it's pretty smooth, but after a while sometimes it gets really laggy, even when I end all the tasks in task manager it seems to persist in this unstable state.
One of the biggest causes of this unstable state is when I'm using google maps, or using bluetooth in my car, this can really kill the stability.
Can anyone offer me any advice? I really like the setup I have right now, am I just pushing the phone too far? Or is there some settings I can modify to continue using the apps I like.
You could try wiping cache and dalvic cache in recovery whenever things get slow
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
Trillian. Live wallpaper. Looks like most of your apps are memory consuming, and CPU consuming. Google maps with navigation takes up resources on a higher side. Maybe try taking off live wallpaper.
As apps continue to stay in background running (not just preloaded ones) like trillian, the memory used by them increases with time, and this makes lesser memory available to any new app.

So it sounds like I am just giving the infuse too much to handle. Should I start using advanced task manager? Could that help in any way?
I'd really like to keep the live wallpaper if possible, but sometimes the phone just hangs for several seconds at a time, very frustrating.

Try MitRa fast & stable.
Keep in mind...both of the above mentioned Rome are NOT infuse roms ....so they will have some kind of bug in there somewhere...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
I've been flashing about 2 ROMs per week, all have their pros and cons. Of all the ROMS I've flashed, I keep coming back to what I call Old Reliable (for me), Sensation 1.1. No reboots, FC's, it's fast, stable and with the Modem/ kernel combo I run, I get 4+ to 7 mbps DL, 2+ UL on network, and 18-30 hours battery life, depending on usage.
This has been MY experience. I've had the same thing occur on the "newer" ROMs which no one can explain. Black screen, green Android, yellow block letters "kernel panic", then I have to pull battery to reboot. I do have a pic of this on my digital camera at home, which I'll post later, it's a strange occurrence.
Use dman3285's stock rom. Clean, fast and made for the Infuse.
[ROM]SGH_I997 UCKL2(Rooted, Deodexed, and Busybox)(CRT off)
But definately lose the live wallpaper. They're neat, but they really slow things down.

Not really. Using ATK to auto kill tasks only increases strain cos of the way how android handles memory.

Yup - I do one kill on boot to clean cruft, and will do a kill if something is clearly misbehaving, other than that - I don't do it and def. not autokill.
Probably live wallpapers is the culprit, they're notorious for being laggy.

ROM for best battery life

I just got the Samsung Galaxy s3 the other day and I am impressed. I was coming from an iPhone 4. Only thing I don't like is the battery life. So far I've flashed synergy 1.7, beans build 8, and Scotts cleanrom. Synergy seems to be the best on battery life, but I just want to know what others think. Also, I am running IMO lean kernel .01 on all of them at stock speeds. Not over clocked. Just wanting opinions.
Try synergy 1.3, best rom with excellent battery life
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
There really is no best rom, it's all about user preference and exactly what you do with your phone. Try them each out for a week to weigh the pros/cons (or in your case scope out the battery life), then go with the one that you like best.

Thanks for the info but I've done that. They all seem the same. I think my real concern is the kernel. I like Scotts cleanrom but I wanna know which kernel is recommended for battery and performance
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
All the ROMs do a pretty good job. If battery life is your #1 concern and nothing else matters:
1. keep screen brightness on minimum. Screen filter can reduce brightness even more.
2. If you use wifi, set it to sleep unless charging.
3. Don't use 4g. Use 3g only.
4. Disable syncing or data entirely and only manually sync when you need to. (Something like JuiceDefender can automate this)
5. Disable google backup.
6. Disable GPS and verizon/google location services.
7. Disable bluetooth.
8. Check and eliminate all wakelocks using betterbattery stats.
9. Turn off all haptic feedback.
10. Freeze all Samsung and Verizon related services using titanium Backup.
11. Maybe a mild underclock on your kernel.
At this point, you will get great battery on your dumbphone with a giant screen
Haha thanks man. Yeah I'm just stupud about battery. I pay attention to it too much. I'll do all that. Stupid giant screen indeed

I was having horrific battery on 1.7 with IMO's 0.1 beta. I completely wiped and reinstalled 1.7 on stock kernel, let my battery completely die and charged it up last night. Today I am at 90% after 3.5 hours unplugged listening to pod casts the whole time and texting and reddit app. Yesterday I was at 78% doing much less and unplugged for less time. I think when updating to new ROMs its important to do a full wipe and make sure if you use TiBu don't restore any system data. I don't have anything frozen as well
I'm getting almost 24 hours with about 2 hours of screen time, so much better coming from a Galaxy Nexus

[Q] Screen absolutely killing battery

Hi, so ever since ICS, or at least SCv7 (not sure if it did it stock, I switched right away), my screen has bee completely killing my battery
I still get perfectly fine life with the screen off, but it just drops right down with it on even not doing anything to heavy. Definitely a problem not normal.
Anyone have any ideas? Is this happening to anyone else?
P.S. Thanks for the new Q and A section by the way.

What are your screen settings at (levels, auto on/off, etc)? Screen is by far the biggest drain on battery. Check my Battery Guide, last Page for an app mentioned to lower brightness more than the stock settings will allow for- maybe that would help in certain instances. I haven't tried it myself, but will be doing so over the weekend, and if beneficial I will update the OP with it.
My SGS3 is the same as my A2 being that the screen gobbled up battery like crazy. So, I suppose you're not alone, at least with what I've experienced.
Not sure if any of this is helpful, but thought I'd share my thoughts...

I keep it on auto or low all the time. this is definitely a real problem, because it was nowhere near as bad on GB. now I know they fixed the cell standby issue, but I can literally see the battery go right on down when I turn it on. 3-4 hours on would kill it.
Maybe try with auto off for a while, see if you notice any difference.

Turn auto off and get a widget to adjust yourself. Read an article one time how on Android system auto brightness is more harm than good.

Looking at your battery's discharge rate graph, looks pretty normal. There's no drastic drops in battery, it's fairly linear in discharge, and even if the screen is using most of that. However, there could be other culprits. What about sync, or haptic, or any of the other things I outlined in my guide? WiFi is off, from what I saw, but might not just be the screen. Have you tried editing build prop for "deeper" deep sleep or edits to other things? I'm going to update my OP with a few more things I thought of for improving overall battery life this weekend. Maybe some of the new ones will help...

I'm sure that the display is eatin more than GB ....
i didn't see display going >50% in GB ..... now on ICS its like always >=70%
i have 2nd system as MIUI from "rdavisct" when i switch to it & come back to ICS
then my battery calibration scrambles ... i did switchin yesterday & it showed me
30% far early than expected
Same problem here..my screen draining 57%
Why don't you try the app betterbatterystats it's here in xda:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15869868
This may help to see the real problem of the fast battery drain you said, also you can install the app rootDim from the playstore to custom your screen brightness.
I hope this helps.

You can also swipe away after using it. Much of battery drain happens in the background.

I've been having absolutely insane drain as well––nearly 50% of the battery. I went from stock to Elementalx, now on Bricked w/ Greenify and I can't get around this outside of swiping it away and then Greenifying the app every single time. This happened randomly after a new app update about a week ago for me. Any help appreciated.
I've had this happen one time, after which I greenified it and it hasn't occurred since.

My two main reasons for me rooting are ad blocking and greenify. I just learned that greenify added support for non-root users. I have greenified every app I don't use on a regular basis and am noticing significant difference in battery. The only thing is that after you use a greenified app you have to re-greenify manually.
Greenify and tasker work great, I had tasker auto hibernate all greenified apps upon screen on. Its basically the closest you can get to automation without rooting.
Greenify has saved my battery issues.

More often than not, a factory reset will take care of battery issues after a major OS upgrade. I'm not sure if it's left-over system files or something about the "upgrading" of existing apps during the process, but I've had to do it with both my Galaxy S3 and Nexus 7 2012. Not every upgrade, mind you, but with one or two.
I do notice my system battery monitor jumping around all crazy, this is after a factory reset.

Bout the same for me. Only thing I notice is that before my wifi was always running in background according to bbs, no matter what I did to change settings. Not anymore after update.
First cycle on the update I lost 35% or so in a couple hours with little use. I checked battery use and Instagram was the primary hog. Uninstalled and reinstalled the app and getting awesome battery life comparable or better than before the update. Not sure why instagram went crazy but works fine now

The update fixed a serious wakelock issue caused by wifi calling for me. A lot of wakelocks seem to have disappeared with the update for me.
Nothing leaps and bounds, but notice a bit of an improvement for sure.
