Can't find a stable ROM, is it the apps I'm using? - Samsung Infuse 4G

I've tested several ROMs, Infused, Serendipity, DarkyRom, going to try gsinfused next.
I routinely have problems with a very laggy phone, I have a live wallpaper running(which I love), and I always have trillian running. Most of the time it's pretty smooth, but after a while sometimes it gets really laggy, even when I end all the tasks in task manager it seems to persist in this unstable state.
One of the biggest causes of this unstable state is when I'm using google maps, or using bluetooth in my car, this can really kill the stability.
Can anyone offer me any advice? I really like the setup I have right now, am I just pushing the phone too far? Or is there some settings I can modify to continue using the apps I like.

You could try wiping cache and dalvic cache in recovery whenever things get slow

Trillian. Live wallpaper. Looks like most of your apps are memory consuming, and CPU consuming. Google maps with navigation takes up resources on a higher side. Maybe try taking off live wallpaper.
As apps continue to stay in background running (not just preloaded ones) like trillian, the memory used by them increases with time, and this makes lesser memory available to any new app.

thanks for the advice, i'll do that when it gets really bad, is there any simpler way to do this though, without accessing recovery?

So it sounds like I am just giving the infuse too much to handle. Should I start using advanced task manager? Could that help in any way?
I'd really like to keep the live wallpaper if possible, but sometimes the phone just hangs for several seconds at a time, very frustrating.

U need to try CM7 last realese

Try MitRa fast & stable.

Keep in mind...both of the above mentioned Rome are NOT infuse roms ....so they will have some kind of bug in there somewhere...

I've been flashing about 2 ROMs per week, all have their pros and cons. Of all the ROMS I've flashed, I keep coming back to what I call Old Reliable (for me), Sensation 1.1. No reboots, FC's, it's fast, stable and with the Modem/ kernel combo I run, I get 4+ to 7 mbps DL, 2+ UL on network, and 18-30 hours battery life, depending on usage.
This has been MY experience. I've had the same thing occur on the "newer" ROMs which no one can explain. Black screen, green Android, yellow block letters "kernel panic", then I have to pull battery to reboot. I do have a pic of this on my digital camera at home, which I'll post later, it's a strange occurrence.

Use dman3285's stock rom. Clean, fast and made for the Infuse.
[ROM]SGH_I997 UCKL2(Rooted, Deodexed, and Busybox)(CRT off)
But definately lose the live wallpaper. They're neat, but they really slow things down.

Not really. Using ATK to auto kill tasks only increases strain cos of the way how android handles memory.

Yup - I do one kill on boot to clean cruft, and will do a kill if something is clearly misbehaving, other than that - I don't do it and def. not autokill.
Probably live wallpapers is the culprit, they're notorious for being laggy.

All the Roms that you've mention are ports. I have try every other new rom that pops up but I keep going back to Galnet's Miui

Disregard my post..
Galnet's Miui is the only port I' will use. Even the infuse Leaked GB roms don't make me stay.

The wife and I both run MIUI on our phones and its super stable. I have 150+ apps installed on mine and it's solid as a rock.
The live wallpaper sometimes laggs it down some. Keep that in mind.

you either have a rogue app, instant messenger running, or streaming music running constantly to get only 6 hrs of battery life.
What apps do you have installed or do you have running?
Can't speak to the data2ext and not sure why you'd want to do that, are you experiencing lag?
Very little lag and the only things I leave running is advanced task killer and set cpu every so often ill leave ebuddy running but I shut it off for the fact that it sucks battery life lol

before you get flamed for running advanced task killer - that is probably helping to kill your battery. it kills processes that android will constantly try to restart and this could cause your battery dying very quickly.
remove that, android does a good job with task/memory management all by itself.
I have prob ably too many apps all on sd card tho not real sure which app could be rogue though or which apps rather cuz who knows

Yeah, ATK is a real hog. If you want to be able to manage rogue processes and apps, try auto killer. You can adjust the memory settings for more free ram but still let android handle it. Although I leave that alone actually now, and leave it at the stock cm settings, but still use the process manager to kill any stuck apps

THANK YOU! Well HOLY ISH !!! Got rid of ATK and the phone is way faster . Don't know about battery life yet. Will post up when I know.
Days? I am lucky to get 5 hours of battery on a new phone that barely has anything installed after exchanging it for one that didn't last 2 hours. I have no ATK on it and no widgets because I am scared to kill the battery. I just posted a long post about it on a battery post. Something, I don't know what is keeping my display really high...at 70% consistently but I have my screen to shut off after 30 seconds. I would love to just be able to go somewhere and use my phone without being worried that it is going to die on me!
Make sure you don't have the craigslist app or yahoo mail app installed as that will kill your phone super fast. If you go over to android central I have a write up on how to make your battery last. I got mine up to 48 hours. Look at my battery thread over at AndroidCentralSent From My Speedy Mc Speederson
Will look at that. Don't have either of those running. I have the email to check at very low intervals. Thanks. I am amazed at all these people who get hours from their phone. What would be the item keeping my display up so high? My few programs I use are at 1-3% but that display still remains to suck the battery.
Why the yahoo mail app? I haven't noticed a difference since installing this. I also run it on my epic and don't notice any problems, but maybe I am missing it.
I have been getting really good battery life lately with miui and tiamat kernel. I got 2 days out of it with 20% left. I'm sure could have gotten another 10+ more hours or of it too but I put it back on the charger lol

I'm on aosp rom running shift deck with sparkos kernel. And I get well over a day with this setup. It all just depends on certain phones. Sense roms will usually be running way more battery than an aosp rom will usually do. Just because its the basic form of android. Stripping all that will help.

How long until we see a stable CM7 ROM

Anyone know approximately how much longer until a stable CM7 is released for the G2X?
Don't get me wrong, I like the current nightly version and I appreaciate the work the guys are doing on this project, but it is a bit buggy, so I was just wondering if anyone knew when a stable CM7 would be released.

In my experiences on other devices it has never been stable. Even when a so-called stable mod is released there are many problems. If you want a bug free rom then don't install CM or any other hacker community roms. Stick with stock. I'm not knocking them; just saying they are not for people that expect a smooth, seamless, bug free experience.

I took your advice and got ADWLauncher EX and I must say I'm glad I did. The menu is much faster and there is more customization.
I just have a question, do you know if you are able to make the background transparent while in the menu? Right now the background black.
Does CM7 use the default internal storage or does it skips over the extra 5 gigs all together and installs apps in the sd card?
It gives you a choice where to install.
As for the other question... remember, asking for CM ETAs causes baldness and impotence (or frigidity in case you are female).

From home screen
Press menu
Select more
Select adw settings

Scroll to background color
Have your phone in portrait because if it is in landscape you can't see the slider bar.
Move the slider the left, then hit the center circle.

[Q] Best battery life ROM?

What's the best ROM for battery life at the moment? I've been stock because of the various problems with nonofficial GB ROMs, it's probably the most functional, but one of the least stable.
What's a good ROM that has good battery life and is stable/functional? Or is good functionality going to be hit and miss for various people until official GB?
One other thing. The hell does AOSP mean?
I'm currently using juwe's smart edition (props to big fault for the port!) with a j2 modem and entropy's DD and my battery life is amazing

So far on all GB ROMs I've tried something that almost everyone uses doesn't work, and some apps force close, and there's other problems...
Nothing wrong with gb roms based on Rogers gb, except for HDMI not working, but who uses that anyway? I'm on infused 2.2.3 right now, I get about a day and a half of moderate use. There are really only bugs with miui., cm7, and any hellraised roms... infused or any of the leaks are fine.
AOSP = android open source project.

Just expressing...
I have found that cm7 is the fastest rom out there, and i tired em all. After using stock and cm7 for a while , I ended up sticking with miui.
You are definitely doing something wrong bec is completely the opposite.... maybe a bad flash? A specific app?

Very interesting.
I am a freak when it comes to noticing these things. I can say that the general "fluidity" of stock and Weapon (opening apps, moving from one app to another, to desktop, re opening, and so on), is smooth and it just wicked fast on Weapon and even stock.
CM7 is good, but not quite there.
If it has to do with flashing - I don't know.
I just follow the instructions ):

The launcher makes a HUGE difference in satisfaction.
For example: MIUI
People dislike MIUI at first glance because "it feels too much like iOS".
True. It does. But the stock MIUI launcher is modeled after the iOS style homescreen. Load up a different launcher and it begins to feel like Android on Steroids.
If you want your phone to feel FAST, you use Zeam as your launcher, and turn off the animated apps grid.
The ADWLauncher is quite choppy. A main reason I stopped using "pure" CM7.

I have yet to understand how does one change a KERNEL. Doesn't these come with the ROM? I assume they do, so how can you change just the kernel without changing the rom?
I do not know what Kernels are, but I am assuming I should refer to them like the "BIOS" of a PC (controlling basic functionality of the device)
If transitions are too slow for you go to spare parts and change the animation thing to fast or none. You can flash kernels basically the same way you flash a rom. Find a kernel in the development section and reboot into recovery, wipe dalvik & cache and look for the kernel.
Amazing! Everyday I learn something new here.
THANK YOU

Kernel is not like the bios. The bootloader is the bios, the kernel is loaded by the bootloader. The kernel has init scripts inn the ram disk that load the OS. The kernel is Perry low level but not bios low. It's the heart of the OS. Think of it like this: the bios/bootloader is the ignition process on a car, the kernel is like the engine, started by the ignition process. With the engine, everything else starts up. Changing the kernel is like changing the engine, to a more optimized, more feature filled custom engine.

No, I've seen cm7 side by side to my weapon and its noticeably slower. I think most people are just so stuck on cm7 that their view becomes slightly distorted, sort of like apple fanboys (no offense to anyone, just stating my findings).
And the slow boot issue has been resolved, under 30 seconds for me running weapon with faux oc/uv kernel.
Edit: To prevent launcher related comments, we would both ran the same launcher, go launcher ex.

Best Battery Saver App Ever!!

Ok so i have tried many battery saver apps and have come to the conclusion that most of them are a joke. Until i tried BatteryXL. With a bit of setup this app has give me over 20 hours of life with use. I am talking about web surfing, texting, gaming, calls and some picture taking. I use my phone a lot and it just would not make it half the day. I even tried an extended battery. But even that sucked. Juice defender isn't bad if you buy the pro version, but BatteryXL is free. There have been a few glitches , as it is still in beta, but they are very minor and didn't effect its usage. So if anyone is looking for an app to help with battery life try it and see how it works for you. I am no way affiliated with the creators of this app. I am just a big fan of it and i know how many evo user complain about battery life. Also if you want to know i am using Sinister rom version 7 and anthrax kernel 009. The rom and kernel you use will affect how much this app helps.
Again i have no affiliation with the make of this app so don't ask me if you have issues. Submit then to the maker.
EDIT: If you don't have an intelligent thing to say, then do the world a favor and keep your mouth shut. The air is polluted enough as it is
Guys, please do not make me close this thread. Stay on its original purpose instead of attacking each other.
Consider this a warning. There is no point on either use so much exclamations marks, replying in such way to it and then attacking back in the same way.....
I am telling you the nicest way, stay on topic.
YOU ARE WARNED!
Thank you D.O.C. I just wanted to inform others about this app because i know battery issue is a big problem for most of us Evo users. And i am sorry for the off topic spat
BatteryXL has saved my battery.. i've been under 50% for over 4 hours already and still have 39%..
thanks for sharing...
Interesting
I switched over to an ICS rom and it still is getting me around 15 hrs or so. I love this app.
Been using it since the 28th and been able to go a full work day without a charge....on my normal high use day....thanks
I bought jd pro a while back but this one seems so much easier to set up. We shall see how it goes.

One thing I hate about this app is it shuts down my 3g when I programed it to shutdown everything else lol

Yea I've tried using this app but it just doesn't work like juice defender... this app doesn't auto sync 3rd party email apps or twitcaster... juice defender makes it possible to sync specific apps during a specific time frame to resync information while the screen is off.. I haven't seen this app (battery XL) do that at all...

Yeah, I'm a bit leery of it myself, after reading all sorts of comments about people having issues getting various radios to come back on. Would like to see more feedback about it, though.

Only issue I have had is every now and then it won't turn my mobile data back on. I will take that since I can get almost 20 hours of use every day. I will post a screen shot of it later today to prove it.
Yeah, I enjoyed this app until I too had problems with it randomly turning off my data, other than that it is great at saving battery life.
Evo 4G
MIUI 2.Something.Something
Here is a screen shot of my battery status s of right now. 12 hours and still over 60%. Not as much use today but still, about 1 hour of web and games, and lots of texts.

What does this app do exactly..? In what ways does it save battery... does it lower cpu usage or does it disconnect wireless connections when not in use or what..?

Like most battery savers out there it controls connections and other features. But unlike most others this one actually does help get you more battery life. Before using this app i would only get about 12 hours total before I needed to charge. Now as you can see from above I get about double that.
@OP.
prior to using this app, were you one of those (like me) who always turn off unnecessary radios and services manually? Cuz I've always done that, and if this app makes an effect beyond that, I might be interested.
But I prefer to do it manually, myself (not to mention, due to OCD, I would always turn off radios manually). Are you not in that camp?

No. I can't say I am. I never remember to turn them off so this app is great for me. It does have some other cool stuff. Check it out is all I can say. It is free. So if you don't like it you aren't out anything.
Simply put, the app sucks. Sucks bad. The concept is good, but the app, it sucks
