Hey guys, sorry for the nooby question but I just s-off'ed by TMOUS HTC Sensation 2.3.4 OTA and installed CWM 5.0.1.0, and I was wondering if i should follow step 3 on the official noob guide for rooting in the dev section regarding the perm-root. It says to flash a .zip through my SD so as to not lose root when rebooting, but I have already rebooted my phone multiple times and not lost s-off or CMW. Is there something that I'm missing or is this step old and unnecessary? I would greatly appreciate any helpful replies!
*resisting the urge to facepalm*
It looks like you missed the whole temp-root-before-we-got-S-OFF-thing But to answer your question, S-OFF and root are 2 different things. Without S-OFF you can't get root

Oh well that makes more sense! Haha wow I feel dumb.. So just to be clear, S-off only allows me to gain access to system root, while rooting the phone actually allows me to flash ROMs and such, correct? If so, what should I do to root it after S-off? Just flash the .zip linked in the rooting guide dev post?

A custom recovery such as ClockworkMod you have installed is the tool that is used to custom ROMs. At this point you have S-OFF and you have the custom Recovery in place so you have 2 options:
1. Use ClockworkMod to flash the superuser; this will 'root' your current ROM and allow you to run apps that require root access such as Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, etc.
2. Use ClockworkMod to flash a rooted, custom ROM which will replace your current ROM.
In either case the first thing you should do is boot into ClockworkMod and do a 'nandroid' backup of your current ROM.
Oh ok, Thank you for the clarification. I ended up flashing the .zip/superuser on the rooting guide and now I am attempting to flash ARHD 3.0.4. with Sense. I made a NAND backup using CWM before flashing the superuser, and now I am doing a titanium backup. Should I back up my apps and system data or just my apps? Also can the free version of titanium backup accomplish this or do I need the Pro key? Sorry for the large amount of nooby questions but seeing as how there are so many knowledgeable people on this forum I figured I would play it safe. Thanks for all the responses!

Well, not exactly. S-OFF unlocks the NAND (so you can flash ROMs, install CWM,...), but root basically gives you ability to change everything, take screenshots,... (Sensation has power + home screenshot though). Custom ROMs are already rooted and you don't need root to flash them. And you can't get root without S-OFF. I hope I explained it

When you are switching ROMs, it is good practice to just backup and restore apps using titanium backup. If you backup system data from one ROM and restore it on another ROM, you may have issues. I have always used the free version.
Awesome, I really appreciate all the help! Unfortunately, I just stumbled into an issue when attempting to flash ARHD 3.0.4. I flashed the super wipe.zip as instructed and all went well, but when i went to flash the ROM itself it gave me an error saying "E:Can't open /sdcard/zips/Android_Revoultion_HD-Sensation_3/0/4.zip (bad)". Any ideas as to how i can successfully flash this? I downloaded it straight from the Dev page so I highly doubt its a bad download..
Edit: Nevermind, being the genius that I am I left the download on my computer going but it went into hibernate so the download stopped at 38MB instead of the complete 346MB..
First of all, I apologize if this is the wrong area to ask this question. I've been to two other forums with my question and have been told to sod-off without help because I posted in the wrong section
Okay, so I bought my first android phone the other day (HTC Inspire!) and I must say, I am never going back to an iPhone ever again.
However, I am a complete and total noob to rooting (as you will find out)
I successfully rooted my phone upon receiving it (with ACE Advanced Hack Kit) and upon trying to install a custom ROM, received an error (to which I cannot seem to remember specifically what it was). I called a friend who told me to re-run the hack kit, which was a bad idea. It ended up freezing on the radio downgrading and put my phone into a bootloop.
I got it out of bootloop after a few hours of research and reset the phone back to its original settings.
Now, my question is: My phone, in HBOOT, still shows that it is "S-OFF." Would it be okay for me to run it through Ace Advanced Hack Kit again to install CWM? I tried using ROM Manager to flash it over, but rom manager is saying my phone isn't rooted at all, which confuses me. I keep getting the error "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
Any help or advice you guys can shed would be wonderful.
Once you are s off never run the hack kit again unless you are going to reverse to s on. Your friend gave you some bad advice. Rooted and s off are not the same thing. S off allows flashing of pd98img and custom recovery. Root is an ability within the Rom you use. From your phone install superuser from the market. That will give you root and will let you install a custom recovery through Rom manager. Only install recovery with Rom manager. Don't let Rom manager install a Rom as it is buggy at best. Or you can use 4ext recovery. Once you have a custom recovery do a backup so you can restore if things go wrong. Download whatever Rom you want to use then you want to always select (within recovery) wipe data/factory reset and then wipe dalvik. This should leave you with an empty data, cache and dalvik and also erases android.secure on sd card. Once there you can install a Rom. Never use the factory reset from Rom or hboot with s off as it will really screw things up. Also almost every custom Rom has superuser and busybox installed already so you shouldn't need to install superuser again.

I've installed SU from the play store, but when I go into ROM Manager, it is still saying superuser isn't installed, or I'm not rooted.
Actually you can use the hack kit again BUT you have to go into the optional menu and not use the main option of root.
In the optional screen their is an option to install cwr.
Or alternatively you can install cwr via a pd98img.

If you are S-OFF but flashed a RUU then you are not rooted anymore. You can do as Mardsta says and flash SU in CWM or if you are willing to flash a custom rom, just make sure that CWM recovery is installed and flash a rooted rom. The important thing is that you already are S-OFF.
Never run a non stock device....if you are already S-OFF there is no reason to re run the Hack Kit.

Ahh yes the optional menu. Been so long since I've used the hack kit I totally spaced the extra options. I rooted back when we still had to make our own gold card.

That's the thing though. I don't have CWM installed (going to recovery in HBOOT simply yields the red error symbol). I have SU installed, but because I am not rooted, it isn't being recognized by Rom manager. I apologize for my ignorance, but how exactly do I get CWM on my phone then? Is there a program that can root and flash it without messing with the S setting?

As marsdta said you can use the hack kits optional menu to flash cwm. You may have to put your phone into fastboot though to get it to recognize it. I'm not 100% on that though because I have never done it that way myself. Or you can use a pd98img.

THAT ^^^^^^
Go to Google Play store and download 4ext recovery control. I like it much better than the cwm given by ace. All you need then is a rom dev'd for inspire or dhd. If it's for dhd then you need to also flash inspiremod so the gps and branding reflect north america and inspire 4g.
This is my first post, so here goes. I have been reading all day after following the guide on the developers forum on unlocking, rooting. Everything went well, it is unlocked, cwm flashed, and rooted. However, rootcheck comes back with "this device does not have proper root access." I did some reading and found out i would have to do more to get a "full root." Superuser is installed and i can use a root browser so I am guessing i have a limited root....
Does anyone have suggestions? Really want to get this done before flashing any custom roms. If it helps, i had 4.1.1 JB before all of this. Suggestions on roms to flash would help, i read i should only flash a rom based on JB. I dont know if its related but i have been unable to do a backup with CWM...results in error.
I hope provided pertinent info. Thanks in advance.

Drop CWM... download/flash TWRP (team win recovery partition) i call them TWiRP, lol
But, with CWM, it just stood still for 30min?! i tried 3 times...nothing
flashed over the alternate recovery from TWRP, and whalA! i can do backups
plus the TWRP gui is ALOT more user friendly, and alot more options.
go here, http: //teamw.in /project /twrp
on the right, top, choose your device...
its the same way as with CWM and FastBoot..
But...
I still cant get ROOT either, busybox SAYS, rooted, but SU and Titanium backup say no root, so does RootExplorer...
so im stuck at that part...
im running, JB 4.1.1
my steps i did:
downloaded/installed asus unlocker tool
followed the directions to install cwm/TWRP ( i chose TWRP, cause CWM is a POS with this tablet)
ran/flashed that root-signed.zip, it said SUCCESS
rebooted..
it said, Optimizing Apps 1 of 140
then loads fine, but like you its givng me LIMITED root access...
**************************** UPDATE ***********************************
This method i just did and got Rooted successfully on the UNLOCKED version of Asus JellyBean 4.1.1
Now we will root the tablet
7) Copy Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed to the internal storage of your tablet. then reboot into the bootloader again.
8) This time you need to select the RCK icon with volume up to enter the recovery image.
9) In recovery flash Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed and reboot into the system
10) Install Supersu from Google Play
11) Open up Supersu, it will ask you to update the binary, choose yes.
12) Now your tablet should be rooted

do not use TitaniumBackup for restoring...use TWRP (or CWM) TB screws crap up...
its best to use it for Restoring Apps, or Cleaning Davilik Cache..etc, but DO NOT use it to restore system files/structures...

Thanks. I just flashed the TWRP recovery...I really like the gui. I have a question though...the superuser3.2 file you said to flash...where do i find that? I'm up to that point. Thanks again, for your help. Also, another question...is it correct that I have to only install roms based on official ASUS JB 4.1.1 ? I'm really unclear on that stuff. If i flash another rom will it undo what I just did in flashing TWRP? I'm getting a little confused between flashing these recoveries and flashing roms...help

flash any rom, thats made for the tablet, the rom will be based off the recent os,like jelly bean, just gutted, ripped and optimized.
there are several, hydro, which is like stock, just performance enhanced, black jellybean, optimized for other stuff.
just research the differences...and read the reviews...the users might have issues that havrnt been worked out yet.
to gain root access to the files and delete system apps, *buy* Root Explorer.
then change a folders view from, r/o to r/w, becareful what u delete.
ALWAYS BACKUP BEFORE MESSING AROUND!!
ANYTHING else?
thanks

As far as I know, you can only flash custom JB ROMS that are based off the JB bootloader. Once you did the OTA upgrade to JB, the bootloader was updated as well. If you try to flash any ROMS that are based off the ICS bootloader, you're going to brick your tablet. That's what I keep reading. I'm still on a locked tablet, but I read everything on the forums.

Update : Problem Solved
So I just upgraded from an iphone, this is my first android. Obviously I want to get rid of the Verizon crap... but what else should I do? And how? What's the first thing I do after Sunshine? And what do you recommend I do?
Read. Read more. And even more. Seriously.
Congrats on throwing off the i-Shackles!!
But if this is your first Android device you have a steep learning curve ahead of you.
If you ran Sunshine successfully you are now S-off, allowing you to truly and irreversibly brick your phone if you go about customizing it to your liking the wrong way.
Read a lot, use the serach function here on XDA and Google in general with abandon! Ask if you diligently searched for hours but cannot find an answer.
Flash only if you really understand what you are getting yourself into.
Always make backups before you try something new and research how to reverse what you are about to do!
Here are a few terms for you start with:
What is:
fastboot, fastboot tutorial
ADB (Android Debug Bridge), basic adb commands
recovery, custom recovery, TWRP recovery
"root" in Android, SuperSU, how to obtain it and what to do with it
Hboot
RUU
custom rom - peruse the Development section here for a plethora of them, read at least the OP of each very carefully
That should keep you busy for a week or so
Have fun

With S-OFF and an unlocked boot loader the first step for root would be to flash TWRP recovery via fastboot on your PC. Navagate your way on the phone to boot twrp. After that you can flash superSU. With root you can permanatly uninstall all vzw apps via an app like titanium backup. If you want to go a step further you could flash Clean Rom(pre debloated ROM).
At some point soon your phone will get a OTA(over the air) update if you have twrp installed on your phone you won't be able to update. You will need to backup in twrp. factory RUU your phone(100% back to stock) keep your bootloader unlocked and S-OFF. Take the OTA, flash TWRP, restore your backup..profit! Its a good idea to make a backup in TWRP right when you install it TWRP(that way you have the option to flash the stock recovery and take the OTA)You can't have a modified system when taking an OTA.
Make sure any backup you make is saved on something other than the phone storage. You could lose everything.

well, with the Sunshine method you are S-OFF which stands for Security Off - AKA Unlocked bootloader.
You can actually control you entire device now that you are sunshine S-OFF. Anything you want - which for new people to HTC and S-OFF can be a disaster. Please make sure to follow everything to a T for instructions as with S-OFF it removes the blocking of things that aren't suppose to be flashed on the phone. With S-ON you can't flash say, an HTC One X Hboot on an HTC One M8, however with S-OFF you can, so be VERY careful and make sure that whatever you flash is 110% for the device you have, and that you check the MD5-checksum.
SuperSU is root. S-OFF = permanent root.
so since you are sunshine S-OFF you can just install the SuperSU and now you have a stock rooted ROM.(I suggest making a nandroid before editing the stock ROM).
If you want to go ahead and mess around with flashing of ROMs, then you would need to flash a custom recovery (I also suggest TWRP)
command is fastboot flash recovery name-of-recovery.img
hope this is helpful.
I was using an iphones for 3 years and learnt all about jailbreaking and unlocking and then I made a switch to android in 2013. I got myself a nexus 4 and stock android was good enough for me and I used my nexus 4 till it gave up very recently. With the nexus 4 I never really cared about rooting the phone for whatever reasons and now with the Oneplus I am very interested to start customizing it. The only problem is my knowledge on rooting phones, flashing, custom roms and kernels are 0. I don't even know what people mean by those things. Yes, a complete noob but I can learn pretty quickly and follow instructions well. So where do I start now?
Any help is appreciated.
First thing to do is unlock your bootloader, then install TWRP recovery, then make a backup of your stock ROM. From there you can root your stock ROM or you can flash a custom ROM, or you can just leave it as is. But the most important thing is to unlock your bootloader now, before you really start using the device because it wipes all user data during the unlock process. I have a guide thread here:

I was like you a couple of months back. I'll tell you this, before you start anything make sure you do a back up. That's the most important thing. From there on you can do whatever your heart desires. As my friend above has stated unlock the boot loader, install a custom recovery and you're ready to go.unlocking the boot loader will allow you to install a custom recovery. You need the custom recovery to flash zip files such as ROMs and kernels etc. I hope this helped !

So I did as it said on the video by xda developers. I did everything and the phone seems to be working fine except for the fact that it isn't rooted properly. I download ROM Toolbox and it gave me a warning message saying no root access found. Then I downloaded Root Checker from playstore and verified my root and it says my phone hasn't been rooted properly.
I manually rooted my phone by using TWRP custom recovery + SuperSU.
Edit: Did a clean up within SuperSU & installed it again using google play and now it works properly. The only thing that was different this time I was prompted to install the binries which I wasn't asked to when I used TWRP to install SuperSu.
[Q] So I got the OnePlus One. What next?

Enjoy it It's a great phone, take it easy read, read and read again BEFORE doing anything. Make sure you have the right files for the right phone. Always do a backup before doing any changes.
