First of all, I apologize if this is the wrong area to ask this question. I've been to two other forums with my question and have been told to sod-off without help because I posted in the wrong section
Okay, so I bought my first android phone the other day (HTC Inspire!) and I must say, I am never going back to an iPhone ever again.
However, I am a complete and total noob to rooting (as you will find out)
I successfully rooted my phone upon receiving it (with ACE Advanced Hack Kit) and upon trying to install a custom ROM, received an error (to which I cannot seem to remember specifically what it was). I called a friend who told me to re-run the hack kit, which was a bad idea. It ended up freezing on the radio downgrading and put my phone into a bootloop.
I got it out of bootloop after a few hours of research and reset the phone back to its original settings.
Now, my question is: My phone, in HBOOT, still shows that it is "S-OFF." Would it be okay for me to run it through Ace Advanced Hack Kit again to install CWM? I tried using ROM Manager to flash it over, but rom manager is saying my phone isn't rooted at all, which confuses me. I keep getting the error "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
Any help or advice you guys can shed would be wonderful.
Once you are s off never run the hack kit again unless you are going to reverse to s on. Your friend gave you some bad advice. Rooted and s off are not the same thing. S off allows flashing of pd98img and custom recovery. Root is an ability within the Rom you use. From your phone install superuser from the market. That will give you root and will let you install a custom recovery through Rom manager. Only install recovery with Rom manager. Don't let Rom manager install a Rom as it is buggy at best. Or you can use 4ext recovery. Once you have a custom recovery do a backup so you can restore if things go wrong. Download whatever Rom you want to use then you want to always select (within recovery) wipe data/factory reset and then wipe dalvik. This should leave you with an empty data, cache and dalvik and also erases android.secure on sd card. Once there you can install a Rom. Never use the factory reset from Rom or hboot with s off as it will really screw things up. Also almost every custom Rom has superuser and busybox installed already so you shouldn't need to install superuser again.

I've installed SU from the play store, but when I go into ROM Manager, it is still saying superuser isn't installed, or I'm not rooted.
Actually you can use the hack kit again BUT you have to go into the optional menu and not use the main option of root.
In the optional screen their is an option to install cwr.
Or alternatively you can install cwr via a pd98img.

If you are S-OFF but flashed a RUU then you are not rooted anymore. You can do as Mardsta says and flash SU in CWM or if you are willing to flash a custom rom, just make sure that CWM recovery is installed and flash a rooted rom. The important thing is that you already are S-OFF.
Never run a non stock device....if you are already S-OFF there is no reason to re run the Hack Kit.

Ahh yes the optional menu. Been so long since I've used the hack kit I totally spaced the extra options. I rooted back when we still had to make our own gold card.

That's the thing though. I don't have CWM installed (going to recovery in HBOOT simply yields the red error symbol). I have SU installed, but because I am not rooted, it isn't being recognized by Rom manager. I apologize for my ignorance, but how exactly do I get CWM on my phone then? Is there a program that can root and flash it without messing with the S setting?

As marsdta said you can use the hack kits optional menu to flash cwm. You may have to put your phone into fastboot though to get it to recognize it. I'm not 100% on that though because I have never done it that way myself. Or you can use a pd98img.

Go to Google Play store and download 4ext recovery control. I like it much better than the cwm given by ace. All you need then is a rom dev'd for inspire or dhd. If it's for dhd then you need to also flash inspiremod so the gps and branding reflect north america and inspire 4g.

Brand new Thunderbolt, I did have it rooted but just factory reset it, I no longer have root. I hold down the power button and BOTH volume arrows and get into the screen for recovery, when I go to it it gives me a black screen with a pic of a phone in the middle with a red triangle and a red exclamation mark over top the phone.
I want to root and get a new kernel but think it would not be smart to proceed until I fix this problem. Jeesh, had it less than 12 hours and broke it already haha.
So, how do I get it to let me in there so I can make a nandroid backup?
I'm pretty certain you need to be rooted to access recovery.
Well, last night when I WAS rooted I tried it and it didn't work either. Well, I will try that tonight around 5PM EST and let you know if rooting allows me in. Honestly, I factory reset the phone after I rooted it because I thought the way I rooted it messed it up. Now I am thinking that is not true.
You have to be rooted to get into recovery. Also, and I am not 100% sure about this, if you did a factory re-set and didnt re-root and then reinstall CWR then there wont be a recovery for you to access.
You're looking at the stock recovery. You need to reroot and flash CWM to be able to install custom zips.

A factory reset shouldn't cause you to lose root. That just wipes data/cache. I would return to stock, root again and go from there. There's a thread in the development section on how to return to stock.
Did you flash CWM after rooting??? You can't do **** without that.
Ok, here is what I did, i took a factory thunderbolt and followed all the directions on this link.

Then, I downloaded rom manager and busybox and was about to try and install a kernal. I wanted to make a nandroid back up and thats when I noticed this problem. I also think I lost my 3g access then too. So, I went to factory reset and then tested the root checker app and it said I had NO ROOT.
I am rather noobish so please make the directions on how to fix this simple HAHA. I am also wondering if the link above has good root instructions and how would I install a kernel on the thunderbolt? Even a link to a thunderbolt kernel thread would be sweet!! THanks!!
I will wait for someone to let me know if that link is any good before I root with it again.

Honestly, idk what that is.. Sry, the only other phone i rooted was my incredible through the one step Unrevoked method.
I think the directions in the link above might have missed something that a noob like me would not have picked up on. Something you guys prolly would have known right away.

CMW is ClockworkMod Recovery. It's the recovery you flash in ROM Manager.
Follow this thread for rooting. There's a few other methods in the development section that have scripts so you don't have to manually push through ABD. Doing it yourself is more fail safe though and also a good learning experience.

Downloading Rom Manager is NOT installing custom recovery but a way to do so.
Once RM is installed open it up & choose Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. That will install the latest recovery from which you can run backups and such.

See, now when I did my incredible I never even downloaded rom manager. I don't even know what it really does. I thought I held up and power when turning on to get into the menu and I was able to make the nandroid backup from that menu somewhere?

What do you mean exactly by flashing CWM ? I just followed the instructions that the link gave me to do. If you wanna check it out i included the below

So... Just my 2 cents. You said you downloaded clockworks and busy box, but I never saw you reference super user. That should have been download number 1 after root. Without that, you're not doing anything.

Yes, I did get that one too. I just rerooted it and now I am looking at the main screen in the rom manager again. What should I do? I do not have busy box, I have rom manager, superuser and root access. I keep hearing something about flashing clockworkrecovery next?? Like does that mean just click on the box in rom manager?

In ROM Manager if you select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery", Rom Manager will do just that.
It will flash your recovery.

Ok I guess I am not fully understanding this. What does it really mean to "flash" your "recovery"?
Does this mean to make a copy of your current phone, like a nandroid backup? Or does it mean to access a copy you have already made and revert your system to that prior copy? Or am I wrong on both?

The answer to your first question of the first link being any good...that would be a big NO. Your phone never rooted from the start due to faulty directions posted. As far as flashing a recovery from clockworkmod that basically means when you need to get to the recovery screen this is the program that will bring you there with the understanding that you flash the recovery. NOW to do that there is an option at the top of the screen which says
" Flash ClockworkMod Recovery "
Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.5
Once you flash it will show this:
Flash CLockworkMod Recovery
Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.3.5
Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.5

What is wrong with the link above?? I used it last night to root the phone and according to root checker I have root... I am not second guessing you, I am just wanting to know what is wrong with it so I can fix the wrong or add the missed steps so I dont have issues.
hey all, currently have a g2x rooted with cm7, and i've been looking to unroot;
just to make sure i dont do anything stupid, i wanna run this through with you guys:
first i would flash the stock 2.3.3 ota rom for g2x
then use the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847 (one click nv flasher) to get back to lg stock recovery by clicking 'flash stock recovery' (do i need to dl anything extra for this?)
then im done, correct? if i boot up, ill get all the stock rom and apps and bloatware and etc back right?

edit: how do i know which version of clockwork mod i have installed? im not sure if i did the external sd support or not...
You've gone back to a stock ROM, you've gone back to the stock recovery, but you haven't actually unrooted.
Whichever method you used to root, you should be able to use that same method to unroot.
UPDATE:
I was originally under the assumption that your 2.3.3. ROM was rooted. If it is stock you should be fine.
sorry for bump, but i read in tga_gunmans post that ppl should flash a rooted 2.3.3 rom and use superoneclick to unroot...would my method work too?
No your way would not work because the stock OTA by xboarder is rooted. Do what tga_gunman said. Flash the rom, use my unroot zip in CWM (deletes root files) and then flash the stock recovery. Busybox will still be on the phone but nobody should be looking for that.

Easiest way to confirm if your not rooted would be to install Superuser from the market. It'll tell you if the phone's not rooted.
There is an app on the market called Root Checker which is free. It will tell you if you are rooted or not.

Thanks for your help jboxer. Forgive my noob-like understanding of rooting/unrooting terminology. Hopefully you'll be able to understand what I did.
Last night I went ahead with the unrooting process on my G2X which was running Gingerbread & CM7 following this youtube video (can't post link due to noobiness: watch?v=ryGIv8KQVIE), the order that this guy goes in is:
1. Wiping all cache/user data/formatting in CWM recovery
2. Restore to a barebones stock data in CWM recovery
3. Flash to go back to Stock using OneClickRecovery
4. SuperOneClick to unroot phone
What I ended up doing was restoring my phone to the backup that I created on my sd card when first rooting my phone rather than download that zip file in the video description which is a completely fresh start.
However, whenever I flashed to go back to stock using OneClickRecovery, it gave me that total barebones fresh start where I had to completely set up my Android from the first start screen and I lost my backup. Also, when I go to unroot the phone with that zip file, I don't know how to 'install from zip' after I've lost CWM Recovery menu. So, I flashed back to CWM so I could recover my backup from my SD Card again and install the 'unroot.zip' that you linked and it ran alright and I restarted, but I still had 'SuperUser' in my App drawer telling me that I was still rooted.
I ended up calling it good last night after spending two hours on it. I left my phone rooted, with CWM recovery still on my phone, but I at least I had my backup Gingerbread image with no CM7 mod. So, my phone is functional, but I would like to complete this process of unrooting completely.
Could you perhaps give a little guidance and clarity to what I'm missing or not understanding? I'd love to unroot/flash back to stock recovery/remove all evidence of rooting AND keep my recovered backup that I have before I even started rooting my phone.

so sadly im still running 1.28.531.10 and want to update to 1.63.531.2, i got a file - OTA_Doubleshot_TMOUS_1.63.531.2-1.28.531.10_release_245284jzymhpvbi39cqj18.zip but it fails to flash - as a non-developer I came across http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1624516 and think i need to somehow get Modaco CWM ? i currently have titanium backup and rom manager apps with - CWM 5.0.2.7 flashed.
Might be stupid question but how exactly do i load in this new update, without messing up my current setup (using trimmed stock rom rooted with s-off)?
I see the article reference calls out some "PG59IMG.zip" file
but cant i simply use my "OTA_Doubleshot_TMOUS_1.63.531.2-1.28.531.10_release_245284jzymhpvbi39cqj18.zip" that got downloaded?
I guess i need a bit more help - as feeling pretty out of it and certainly dont want to mess up my phone. You can only install manufacturer ota updates with a stock recovery.
Doing the update can equate to a factory reset, at the very least will lose root - you'll have to re-root it.
Installing a PG59IMG.zip file will wipe your system.

and flashed it through CMR...
for some reason other root methods just didnt work (i tried about 5 ) and at some point did have superuser.apk on phone but it said bad permissions, and i downloaded a "root checker" and it said i still did not have root..
but kudos to hasoon2000 -- for making the program - still dont know if i should "relock-bootloader" (i already has s-off, but used his program to flash CMR, then CMR to flash the su.zip ) but dont know what "unlock bootloader" did and if i should relock it, now that i got root up and going...
One thing I'd do is--

That's an older version of Superuser. And while it may be adequate, I recommend you flash the newer version from AndroidSU.com: http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
From my experience, it sometimes doesn't want to install unless you follow these steps:
Boot into CWM recovery
Connect your phone to PC via USB
Choose "mounts and storage," then "mount USB storage"
When your phone directory shows up on your PC, copy the Superuser zip to the root of your SD card
Unmount USB storage and go back to the main CWM menu, then choose "install zip from sdcard"
Scroll down to the Superuser zip and select it. Installation should go without problems.

Erm, no. You most definitely do not want to relock the bootloader. If you have root/s-off, updating Superuser is the only thing I'd recommend. You're golden for everything else.

I tried that the other day, however If i flash that version v3.0.7 (41) -
I no longer have "root" and my "rom manager" and "titanium backup" will not work
- the new su app did look nicer but - defeats the point if it doesn't function, im still trying to find a way to revert my phone and get the old version back in there(have to start all over). Im hoping there is a workaround for this behavior (perhaps there should be a separate thread on getting a working version of superuser 3.0.7 - as it installed fine)?

I heard there are problems flashing stock rom with CWR if the stock recovery isnt removed? Thats why I dont know if I should flash the stock image.
Is the process of flashing rom with CWR recovery the same as with stock recovery?

Best way is to do it manually. You can find all of the steps required here. The only difference is that you should be flashing the latest recovery from here and the latest superuser.zip file when flashing with recovery.
Note, unlocking bootloader will cause loss of EVERYTHING on the device that you have put on there (sdcard, apps, data partition, etc).

You suppose thats better to do manually so I will have latest version of recovery and superuser?
And yes I am aware of the data loss waited sometime to finish all my games now I am ready to lose all my app data.

Do it this way. The one click is fine but using Android SDK and going through all that will help you in the long run. This way you know the process in case something goes wrong. It may be confusing at first but worth it. It will teach you a lot more than flashing a one click!
I learnt a lot from this and feel much more experienced and capable because of it. I know I will be able to solve any major issues using Android Debug Bridge (adb).
Okay then I am gonna try the manual way and gonna take out time for it. Now I just need to know what do I flash once I have unlocked bootloader and installed CWR?
I just want the stock google rom and receive OTA if nexus S continues to be supported by google.
You won't need to reinstall the ROM if you are currently on 4.0.4. The ROM stays there as-is. Feel free to do your wipes in recovery and reflash stock 4.0.4 through CWM if you must. You flash CWM to your phone and then superuser through CWM.
Steps:
Setup ADB/fastboot
Bootloader --> fastboot oem unlock --> agree
Bootloader --> fastboot flash recovery recovery.img --> this will give you CWM
Recovery --> flash superuser.zip and, if you must, wipe and reflash ICS (flash su AFTER this if done)
Reboot --> bingo
Also note, with stock ROMs it will replace your current recovery with stock recovery on each boot. If you want to keep CWM, delete /system/etc/flash-recovery.sh when you first boot. You'll have to reflash recovery afterward and it will stick.
Oh I was of the impression that unlocking bootloader wipes everything means it wipes the OS as well. That is nice if it's just data and not the OS, dont think I would reflash it if it's not needed.
Can you explain what you mean by will have to reflash recovery? I will have to do that even if I delete that file on first boot? And whats the drawback if I dont delete that file and stick with stock recovery?
As soon as you boot into stock android it will replace the recovery. So if that file is there on first boot, it will replace it while booting and you will be without CWM (stock instead). After first boot you can delete the file (you can reflash a ROM which has this deleted, or delete it yourself from a stock ROM, or even use adb or a recovery-based file manager to delete the file, then you won't have this problem at all) and it will no longer reflash stock recovery, but you would already have the stock one and need to flash CWM one more time to get it to stick. Easiest way is to just flash CWM and delete it within android imo, saves mounting commands and the such.
No downside really. If you need to flash something for one reason or another you'll just have to reflash CWM before you do so. Once rooted, ROM Manager can do this for you within android anyway.
I had already downloaded and installed the drivers from the one click root thread and my computer shows the android adb thing when I connect my phone with USB debugging.
But as you guys suggested I am gonna do the manual way. So do I just skip the installing driver on computer in the part 1 of this guide?

Because you have a Nexus S with amoled. That's the i9020. The i9023 is SLCD.

He has the i9023 to my knowledge. It is completely normal, though. Bootloader and recovery for i9020 and i9023 series are the same, this can be attributed to the issue with 4.0.3 recovery backlight not turning on.
If fastboot recognises your phone in the bootloader (the fastboot menu), your drivers are installed an working perfectly.
Finally got to the unlock bootloader screen, didnt do it just yet but now I know how to do it.
I must say the guide is a bit outdated, the software has changed quite a bit seems. The most frustrating part was that the fastboot file is actually in the platform tools folder instead of the tools folder which I didnt figure for a while. I will hold off rooting when I have a whole day off because once I lose everything I would be very anxious to get my phone back to normal which will take time.
Thanks for the help harbb, if I have any problem flashing recovery and superuser I will come back for more help.
And yes I have the LCD version i9023.
Btw the guide said the fastboot will be in the tools folder but the tools folder had a read me that "adb has moved to the platform tools folder" this is how I figured to go to that folder and thats where the fastboot file actually was.
Now it says I should put the recovery image in the tools folder so should I do that or put it in the platform tools folder?
In the instructions for the flashing recovery I am not understanding one thing.

So after flashing recovery I have to reboot? Since I am on stock rom that would bring back the stock recovery so how would I flash superuser then?

fastboot and adb is now in platform tools, that is correct. Easiest way is to put your recovery in there too so you don't have to type in the absolute file path to it, don't put it in tools.
Don't power off or reboot the phone. After you flash recovery go straight into the recovery menu and root, flash custom ROMs, kernels, etc. You can transfer files to flash via the mounts and storage --> mount usb storage menu. After this feel free to reboot.

I am pretty new to rooting, and I am sorry if I am noob to the max.
I just rooted my Nexus S 4G, and installed ROM Manager v5.0.0.7. I want to put cm9 (the release candidate) on my phone. Every time I open ROM Manager, and hit Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, it says "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
Thinking this was an issue with the root access ROM Manager has, I looked at the app list in Super User, and nothing is there.
How can I fix this and get cm9 on my phone??

EDIT: I uninstalled both SuperUser and ROM Manager, got the latest version of SuperUser (v3.1.3) and ROM Manager. When I hit Flash CWM, the blue bar at the top goes almost all of the way, then the program quits responding.
Why are you flashing a recovery when you already installed one??
you have not given Rom manager root access, hence nothing in the superuser app. try clear su's data and cache, and go to its settings>security>Automatic response>Prompt and clear rom manager's data and cache as well, and try again. this time, you will encounter a message titling superuser request and click allow and remember options and you're on your way to the ICS party, although im leaving in 2 weeks in favour of jellybean
Alternative: install TWRP, and flash it via adb, and use reboot recovery command in terminal

what didn't go right? no prompt? more info please... and make sure you're actually rooted, not just install superuser app
Do you or do you not already have a recovery on your phone? Installing superuser =/= rooted. If you don't you should manually install a recovery so that: A. You have a better understanding of what you did (it's always better to know what you're doing when you're messing around with your phone) and B. If something goes wrong you know exactly what caused it.
If you already have recovery why are you bothering with Rom manager? Just wipe cache and data (make a backup first) then flash the Rom.
@063_XOBX it looks to me as if he didn't root, thus the rom manager error message, privileged commands=root required commands, and rom manager's not getting it. or it's the superuser app didn't allow it to access root

That was my first conclusion too, I just wanted to make sure before I flat out said that he wasn't rooted.
Just wanted to update the situation:
I definitely was rooted at the time of posting this, as I could tell by the open lock on the bottom of the boot screen under Google and it said S-OFF when I would boot into recovery.
I ended up just unrooting the phone and rerooting, and this seemed to fix whatever bug I had.
