[Q] thunderbolt bootloader

when i try to get to the bootloader by holding the power and volume down it automatically takes me into hboot and starts loading PG05IMG.zip. I had previously gained root access with s off and downloaded superuser and rom manager. etc. i saved my old rom on rom manager and attempted to flash a new one, but now it says that i dont have root access when i install superuser. i was trying to factory reset but like i said it automatically goes to hboot when i try to get into the bootloader. in the bootloader it still says i have s-off

1. Change the name of PG051MG.zip to something like PG051MG-1.zip so it doesnt try to update every time.
2. Did you download BusyBox onto your phone?

yeah it still shows that superuser and busybox are on my phone when its mounted in disk drive mode. i had full root access im not quite sure how i ****ed it up

Always remove the pg05 file when done. Did you let it complete the update? That can screw up root.

i let it complete the update yes. but i also let it complete the update after i had already rooted and forgot to take it off, when it had gone into hboot

Ok so maybe I dont fully understand your problem. You are able to boot up your phone normally correct? When is your phone telling you that you dont have root access, when you try to access Rom Manager?

yes it boots up normally and when i try to access rom manager, and when i used root checker it says that it cannot find the superuser file where it is supposed to be. but i can see the superuser file when i mount the phone in disk drive. would changing the location of the su zip file do anything? or should i unroot my phone and start the process all over again. the problem with the bootloader was that i was trying to do a factory reset and it kept going into hboot and loading pg05img.zip. i changed the name of the file so it is no longer doing that and i did a factory reset from the bootloader but i am still having the problem of it saying i have no root access. the problem arose when i backed up my current rom on rom manger and attempted to flash a new rom from the ones on the list of the app

Ok well Superuser and BusyBox are not supposed to be just zip files sitting on your SD card, they are supposed to appear just as normal apps do in your app drawer. I suggest finding both of them on the Market and installing them to your phone. Go to the BusyBox one first after the download and run the installation process for it. Then go to the Superuser app to make sure it opens up properly. Then try to access Rom Manager. It will ask you for superuser permission, hit yes. Make sure to pay attention cuz the request will time out after 5 seconds.

when i attempt to use the busybox app it just says that it cannot find the su binary on my phone and that it is not rooted

But if you start the phone in the bootloader it says S-OFF?

go download titanium backup in the market, then start it and hit the problems button at the bottom and let it download the newest busybox.

yupp.. and i didnt put the su zip file on my sd card. and since apparently i no longer have root access i cant "unroot" my phone and put s on, to start back over again. i feel that i most likely have done something very unintelligent while thinking i was doing everything right.? im just confused as to why all of a sudden i dont hve root access

the busybox download through titanium failed because it says i dont have root access. it said something on titanium backup though that caught my eye about the current rom i have not having root access? and since the problems started when i backed up my old rom on clockworkmod and attempted to flash a new one i feel like this is where the root of my problem is. lol

Did you install superuser from the market also and check to see if thats working?
Its not your current ROM because you can have the stock ROM and still be rooted.

i know that, i had the stock rom rooted and then backed it up and attempted to flash a new one, or what i though would flash a new one by just selecting it out of clockworkmod. but no, superuser from the market also says that i do not have root access. i have the backed up rom, from clockwork before i tried flashing the new one, saved in a folder on my sd card but i cant flash it back to that because i dont have root so clockworkmod recovery isnt working

That is weird, I guess its possible that your phone automatically flashing the radio you had left on your SD card caused some negative effects. If you want to play it super safe you can follow the instructions here to return safely to stock and try the rooting process all over again.
You may also try to redirect your question in the development section, there are much more knowledgeable people there that may not check this general section out that can help you out.

You shouldn't need to have root to complete the first portion of the instructions to return to stock. Its basically the same as the first steps to gaining root you see here. All your doing is pushing files to your phone using ADB. The link I just posted should have the files you need to return to stock as well if you no longer have them saved on your pc.

I'm not exactly sure what you did however just follow the manual method and you'll be ok. there is not a problem with doing it over again. of course this will give you root then from there you can do whatever you like. just be sure after you flash each of the ruu's which you name PG05IMG.zip as soon as you flash them delete them off the SD card. or it will keep prompting you to flash it again any time you go into your bootloader.

Yes you are correct as he will be stock. only problem is he will be stock with the downgrade. Don't think that is what he has in mind.

how do i update rooted phone w/ ota update?

so sadly im still running 1.28.531.10 and want to update to 1.63.531.2, i got a file - OTA_Doubleshot_TMOUS_1.63.531.2-1.28.531.10_release_245284jzymhpvbi39cqj18.zip but it fails to flash - as a non-developer I came across http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1624516 and think i need to somehow get Modaco CWM ? i currently have titanium backup and rom manager apps with - CWM 5.0.2.7 flashed.
Might be stupid question but how exactly do i load in this new update, without messing up my current setup (using trimmed stock rom rooted with s-off)?
I see the article reference calls out some "PG59IMG.zip" file
but cant i simply use my "OTA_Doubleshot_TMOUS_1.63.531.2-1.28.531.10_release_245284jzymhpvbi39cqj18.zip" that got downloaded?
I guess i need a bit more help - as feeling pretty out of it and certainly dont want to mess up my phone. You can only install manufacturer ota updates with a stock recovery.
Doing the update can equate to a factory reset, at the very least will lose root - you'll have to re-root it.
Installing a PG59IMG.zip file will wipe your system.

UPDATE:
finally got root:

to get CMR flashed - then downloaded su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
and flashed it through CMR...
for some reason other root methods just didnt work (i tried about 5 ) and at some point did have superuser.apk on phone but it said bad permissions, and i downloaded a "root checker" and it said i still did not have root..
but kudos to hasoon2000 -- for making the program - still dont know if i should "relock-bootloader" (i already has s-off, but used his program to flash CMR, then CMR to flash the su.zip ) but dont know what "unlock bootloader" did and if i should relock it, now that i got root up and going...

One thing I'd do is--

That's an older version of Superuser. And while it may be adequate, I recommend you flash the newer version from AndroidSU.com: http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
From my experience, it sometimes doesn't want to install unless you follow these steps:
Boot into CWM recovery
Connect your phone to PC via USB
Choose "mounts and storage," then "mount USB storage"
When your phone directory shows up on your PC, copy the Superuser zip to the root of your SD card
Unmount USB storage and go back to the main CWM menu, then choose "install zip from sdcard"
Scroll down to the Superuser zip and select it. Installation should go without problems.

Erm, no. You most definitely do not want to relock the bootloader. If you have root/s-off, updating Superuser is the only thing I'd recommend. You're golden for everything else.

I tried that the other day, however If i flash that version v3.0.7 (41) -
I no longer have "root" and my "rom manager" and "titanium backup" will not work
- the new su app did look nicer but - defeats the point if it doesn't function, im still trying to find a way to revert my phone and get the old version back in there(have to start all over). Im hoping there is a workaround for this behavior (perhaps there should be a separate thread on getting a working version of superuser 3.0.7 - as it installed fine)?

Odd Situational Question about Rooting

First of all, I apologize if this is the wrong area to ask this question. I've been to two other forums with my question and have been told to sod-off without help because I posted in the wrong section
Okay, so I bought my first android phone the other day (HTC Inspire!) and I must say, I am never going back to an iPhone ever again.
However, I am a complete and total noob to rooting (as you will find out)
I successfully rooted my phone upon receiving it (with ACE Advanced Hack Kit) and upon trying to install a custom ROM, received an error (to which I cannot seem to remember specifically what it was). I called a friend who told me to re-run the hack kit, which was a bad idea. It ended up freezing on the radio downgrading and put my phone into a bootloop.
I got it out of bootloop after a few hours of research and reset the phone back to its original settings.
Now, my question is: My phone, in HBOOT, still shows that it is "S-OFF." Would it be okay for me to run it through Ace Advanced Hack Kit again to install CWM? I tried using ROM Manager to flash it over, but rom manager is saying my phone isn't rooted at all, which confuses me. I keep getting the error "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
Any help or advice you guys can shed would be wonderful.

Once you are s off never run the hack kit again unless you are going to reverse to s on. Your friend gave you some bad advice. Rooted and s off are not the same thing. S off allows flashing of pd98img and custom recovery. Root is an ability within the Rom you use. From your phone install superuser from the market. That will give you root and will let you install a custom recovery through Rom manager. Only install recovery with Rom manager. Don't let Rom manager install a Rom as it is buggy at best. Or you can use 4ext recovery. Once you have a custom recovery do a backup so you can restore if things go wrong. Download whatever Rom you want to use then you want to always select (within recovery) wipe data/factory reset and then wipe dalvik. This should leave you with an empty data, cache and dalvik and also erases android.secure on sd card. Once there you can install a Rom. Never use the factory reset from Rom or hboot with s off as it will really screw things up. Also almost every custom Rom has superuser and busybox installed already so you shouldn't need to install superuser again.

I've installed SU from the play store, but when I go into ROM Manager, it is still saying superuser isn't installed, or I'm not rooted.

Actually you can use the hack kit again BUT you have to go into the optional menu and not use the main option of root.
In the optional screen their is an option to install cwr.
Or alternatively you can install cwr via a pd98img.

If you are S-OFF but flashed a RUU then you are not rooted anymore. You can do as Mardsta says and flash SU in CWM or if you are willing to flash a custom rom, just make sure that CWM recovery is installed and flash a rooted rom. The important thing is that you already are S-OFF.
Never run a non stock device....if you are already S-OFF there is no reason to re run the Hack Kit.

Ahh yes the optional menu. Been so long since I've used the hack kit I totally spaced the extra options. I rooted back when we still had to make our own gold card.

That's the thing though. I don't have CWM installed (going to recovery in HBOOT simply yields the red error symbol). I have SU installed, but because I am not rooted, it isn't being recognized by Rom manager. I apologize for my ignorance, but how exactly do I get CWM on my phone then? Is there a program that can root and flash it without messing with the S setting?

As marsdta said you can use the hack kits optional menu to flash cwm. You may have to put your phone into fastboot though to get it to recognize it. I'm not 100% on that though because I have never done it that way myself. Or you can use a pd98img.

Go to Google Play store and download 4ext recovery control. I like it much better than the cwm given by ace. All you need then is a rom dev'd for inspire or dhd. If it's for dhd then you need to also flash inspiremod so the gps and branding reflect north america and inspire 4g.

[Q] Did I root correctly?

So I got my 300T a few nights ago.
It's already got Asus's JB on it.
Wanted to root to use the SwitchMe app for multiple profiles.
I was able to get the system to see fastboot, and ran all of the commands. Was able to boot to CWM and install root-signed. When I was trying to reboot, it said root was possibly lost, asked me to fix it, i said yes.
When I open up the SwitchMe app, it just keeps trying to open a SuperUser window about 7 times, and then does nothing else.
Have I done something wrong?
SuperUser just says No Apps in List.
edit: tried to update SuperUser. It says "gaining root access.....fail!". Guess I'll try to install root-signed again. Not sure how I could've messed it up the first time.
edit 2: wiped cache and dalvik, installed root-signed again, same problem. SwitchMe says I haven't granted superuser permissions. SuperUser shows no apps, is set to auto-allow root access, and fails getting root access when running binary updater.

im pretty sure you have to unlock the bootloader
and go through some crazy process before you can root with JB

My tablet was running JB when I bought it. I unlocked and still could not get my tablet to root using CWM. On top of that, CWM would not make a proper backup. I highly recommend you switching to TWRP. I did, flashed a rooted custom ROM and haven't had anymore issues.
Many people are having issues with CWM. TWRP is definitely the way to go. :good:

Well, what I did to root my stock using TWRP was to flash the root-signed in the CWM thread, but as this didn't really got me full root, I flashed the flashable zip from here, downloaded SuperSU from market, there then chose "update binary" and then I had root
I'm pretty sure flashing the root-signed of the CWM thread wasn't needed, but if you do this steps (need to be unlocked to flash a recovery, strangely recommend TWRP 2.3.1 or 2.2.2 for 4.1 ROMs and 2.3.3 for 4.2 ROMs (as 4.2 has this sdcard/0 directions because of Multiusers, 2.3.3 uses this directories too))
So what should work:
1. unlock bootloader
2. flash CWM / TWRP / MobileODIN installable ZIP: CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip from here
3. download SuperSU from market and there update binary (don't know how it's called exactly)
4. enjoy!
if you decide to use a Custom ROM, you just need to flash the ROM in TWRP and should get Root too with the ROM (as all of them include Root afaik)

Rooted device doesn't show "Tampered device" screen on boot

I rooted my S4 with the all-in-one toolkit but I have the feeling that something didn't worked out. First thing, I don't get the boot screen with the red writing..I still have the normal one. It installed TWRP recovery alright and it works well. It installed SU, but i had troubles installing busybox..it gave errors about permission, even if I gave the installer root permission at launch..I had to install busybox through recovery. Other thing it didn't work is uninstalling system apps..I tried with Titanium, Anttek app manager and even with manually delete the apks, but after a reboot the apps and the apks reappeared..
All this things made me think that something went "not-fully-ok" in the unlocking process...
Is there something I can do to verify this?

Hi, are you using a custom ROM or the stock ROM? The apps reappearing issue is on the stock ROM and happens on the 4.1 Jelly Bean ROM because HTC in their infinite wisdom (lmao who did I copy) introduced a write-protect feature in the Jelly Bean kernel. So installing stuff will work, but only in recovery when the kernel isn't active. I assume this is how you installed Superuser - through recovery. To overcome this issue you can flash a custom ROM like ViperOneS or if you don't want a custom ROM you can flash a zip in recovery which I will provide the link to shortly

Until CM 10.1 reaches stable, I think i'll stay with stock rom..does a new kernel provides other benefits?

is this a device you have unlocked and bought brandnew yourself? or used?
mayby you dont have full root (after flashing root)
if your on JB maybe you have to flash the edited init d file for full r/w in system

Thank you all for your replies! I'll try and flash this zip with twrp..the phone was used, but the previous owner did nothing like flashing stuff, or rooting..
Does flashing this package allows me to permanently delete system apps?
And are there real benefits with flashing a non-stock kernel?

Meanwhile, bought flash image gui, flashed the kernel with it, and again with recovery. Now I can uninstall system apps permanently!

What version is your toolkit? 3.4?
It looks more like you S-Offed, because HBOOT didn't give a da*m about the red message when S-Offed.
You're running stock. Kernal reboot would force it to reinstall.

On the Hboot screen it says clearly S-on...and i'm sorry but i didn't understand your "Kernal reboot would force it to reinstall"
