Colour Temperature - Warm?! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So had my N5 a few days now and it's amazing - loving it (except the speakerphone but that's another story). Previously had the N4 and had all sorts of issues with uneven screen etc (went through 8 units to get a decent one) but the N5 seems to have very good backlight uniformity and colour uniformity and I'm really impressed overall. Keeping the first one which is unusual for me.
Thing is.... it's very noticeably "warmer" than my N4. This isn't necessarily a "problem" but I'm wondering how others are finding the colour temperature or whites on the N5 compared to your previous phones. Also - I used Franco's kernel on the N4 to tweak the colour settings on that and there's a test version for the N5 I flashed but the colour tweak stuff isn't there yet as it's a test version. Is there any other way to adjust the colour temp on the N5 yet - or is it too early for that?

Try screen adjuster on the play store.

Galaxy S4 Adobe RGB mode, any real merit?

http://blog.gsmarena.com/here-goes-the-samsung-galaxy-s4-black-mist-hands-on-video/
This hands on from GSMArena shows an Adobe RGB mode in the screen mode settings. It seems to have taken the place of the "natural" mode in the GS3 and Note 2. My question is, do you think it will be drastically better than the old natural mode?
I've owned the GS3 and now am rocking a Note 2. Switching to natural mode turns everything lackluster, grainy, and dingy looking. It almost feels like its turning off some subpixels. The contrast goes down and whites look even grayer. I've tried using it a few times, but always get really annoyed and switched back to standard. It's suppose to bridge the gap and be more pleasant like the natural colors of an LCD, but all it does is make the screen look defective to me.
One of the biggest problems with AMOLED is that when you turn up the brightness, the colors also change. It's consistently saturated, but not consistently of the same color. Greens always make me barf, and there are so many kinds of green. The weather widget and Lord of the Rings trailers are good examples. Do you think the Galaxy S4 has improved on color consistency over varying brightness settings?
I cannot tell much from the GSMArena video nor have I seen the phone in person. But I would like to hear your thoughts if you think the S4 screen color fidelity has improved much from its previous iteration, with or without the new Adobe RGB screen mode. Or if you could link to sites that have examined this in detail with actual units. The more generic reviews like to absentmindedly say the "natural" mode fixes the color issues with Samsung's panels, but that has not been the case for me, and am hoping the Adobe RGB mode and Samsung's new 1080p panel might not be just the same old same old.

Spoke with someone today who had some hands-on, he's a guy who really obsesses over colour temperature too (like me), he said it wasn't quite as good as the Perseus kernel master settings for screen calibration, but did make a very noticeable difference for the better. Incidentally, it you're with a Note 2 you should try Perseus out. I would not be without its colour tuning now (just give yourself a while to adjust, its such a big change from the Samsung colour calibration that it takes some getting used to).
Galaxy S4 also have 4 manual mode to switch on and 7 automatic modes .....

Feedback about Display !

Hi guys, I'm kind of curious on this point...
So, what do you think of the screen compare to other phones ? Like viewing angles, contrast, color reproduction etc.
Thank you guy !

there are video on the net that clearly shows how N5 display is inferior to the G2 display.
Less contrast, no good black level on N5.

Yeah I saw that
The blacks are a bit grey and the viewing angles not that great, but its bright enough that its clearly readable in strong sunlight.
after coming from the S4 I'm pretty happy with it. Does just fine in my opinion

The N5 display is the only thing I'm not really happy with. Holding it next to my N7 with identical screens, the blacks on the N7 are VERY much blacker. Black widgets on a black background on the N5 look very gray (particularly the G-music widget). Screen is very "warm" color compared to N7 being very "cool". Looking at it without N7 next to it, it looks fine (happy enough with it). Higher resolution really isn't that noticeable to my eyes.
Other than that, the N5 does everything faster.
How is the display and its colors as compared to nexus 4 colors ?? Are the colors still lacking saturation and are washed out as they were in nexus 4 ??
Best screen ever! Never using an amoled again. And those that mention colors are washed out, probably are noobs. Colors are easy "fix" once franco and faux release that option in their kernels. But if you lile to whine just becauss you love whinning, then keep doing it!

My findings with the s4 screen

So as you know the kit kat update brought back the smearing (which was more or less hidden until know) and is the most noticable when you are on the lowest brightness. But also there is a green tint on lowest brightness, most noticeably in videos. Now as you know apps like screen adjuster reduce this problem but what i found is that when activated screen adjuster (15 on contrast in my case) does the following: i was in youtube app to test and in portrait the video didn't had any green tint, while in landscape the tint appeared. And with some other video player (like mx) the tint was gone and the smearing was reduced or even gone. Note that in mx i wasn't using the screen adjuster app. So maybe just maybe there is something in the software that samsung messed up. If a dev can look into this maybe we can figure out something.
Thanks in advance and i apologise if these things were known and i wasted your time.

Been using Samsung phones aswell as others for years and never had a single fault. They all latest over a year before being sold on with zero issues. I've had an S4 since launch and it's still working perfectly. As far as reliability and build-quality goes Samsung is the best in the business, and by build quality I mean how well its assembled and reliability NOT the material the case is made of which many of you care so much about.

Same for me, i keep my screen at about half brightness and it is fine, i can't say i have looked overly close at all though..
Since the s4 true black pixels get completely turned off, the smearing you see are those pixels turning on again. It's a hardware thing.
Can't say I've noticed any difference. Can you elaborate at all?

You can see it in this video. Black pixels leave a purpleish trail on the screen. http://youtu.be/DOQ91ujRFxU
I see what you mean now, so is this a hardware limitation or somehow linked to the software (os version)

Hardware limitation of OLED screens. Pixels take some time to go from completely off (black) to a lighter color such as blue or gray resulting in that weird trailing. AFAIK, the older version of the software didn't use pure black (pixel off) in the menu but a slightly lighter shade of black (so that the pixel would not be completely off). I still noticed it in some moving scenes in movies though when pure black was used.
For the green tint I don't know, I remember when I switched from LCD on my Sony phone to the S4 I noticed it had tinted whites and weirdly saturated colors but now I'm used to it and I don't notice it anymore and I actually kinda like the saturated colors even though they aren't very realistic.
Haven't seen one since switching from my bloody ****ty Galaxy W I8150 which had a really bad white smearing effect (v3 HW rev). Using the exynos version with MFD: 2013:12:24 (christmas eve baby!)
There MIGHT be differences with screens manufactured at different time/version/revision but that's just an uneducated guess.

How white are your whites?

No, I'm not trying to sell washing powder, just trying to understand an issue I've had now with two Pixel 2 devices, and one that I posted about on the colour saturation and accuracy thread on the Real Life Review boards previously.
My first Pixel 2 arrived in December and I was immediately underwhelmed with the colour balance on the display - regardless of configuration options. Whites were very yellow - not as bad as when the Night Light was on, but far from white. So I returned the device, and a new one arrived a few days later. My second Pixel 2 is undoubtedly much better than the first. Not only was the colour balance better, it was also noticeably sharper when compared side by side. However, it still has a definite yellow tint in the whites, and some images seem to show this more than others - for example, flesh tones in the otherwise superb photos (when viewed on the device) look odd.
It's most noticeable for me when I have a nearby monitor or screen to compare. Individually the phone does not look so bad, but the whites on my monitor, laptop, tablet and even old phones are significantly whiter. (I'm not helped by the fact that I work in front of a screen all day - so I'm rarely able to avoid the comparison.)
Hence the question - both my devices have had a distinct yellow tint in the whites. How about yours?
I'd really like to keep the phone - because pretty much everything else about it is great. However, it's not a cheap phone, and because of that I'm not sure I should be making such a compromise on the display.
Any feedback appreciated.
I went to Best Buy and looked at the Pixel 2 they had there, and it had a similar yellow tint to the one I had that I RMA'd, but I don't think the tint was as bad on the one at Best Buy as it was on the one I had.
To get a comparison I just loaded the Play Store app (white background) and compared to a sheet of laser printer paper I had on my desk (under fluorescent lighting in my office). I'd have say my whites were a bit colder (i.e. less yellow) than the paper appeared under these lighting conditions.
I tried changing colour mode, but that didn't seem to have a dramatic effect on the white point, though "saturated" looked a little different - I'm not sure whether I'd describe it as "warmer" (more yellow/less blue) or just having slightly more green, but there was a very small change in colour temperature in that mode. I use "natural" myself anyway.

Thanks for the feedback.... I'm using natural mode too - boosted, or saturated just make the whites more yellow for me. It's subtle - but noticeable.
I've also noticed yellowish whites comparing it to other screens. Even my old N6P had better whites. I don't know if it's a generalized issue we should worry about, or just stick with it.

It's just how these screens were tuned. They are much warmer than LCD screens and look yellow when u compare to basically any other display. It's a feature, not a bug. Stop comparing and you won't notice it ?

You're right of course, I need to stop comparing... I just got a bit paranoid after my original RMA'd device's screen was so poor. I think I'm going to stick with it.

Why is the screen a little warm (yellow tint) on the Pixel 4a

Just moved to Pixel 4a from an LCD display and I notice that the screen is a bit warm. Do others notice the same thing?

Yep. There are some options in settings related to the display (settings/display/colours where you can choose natural, boosted or adaptive which make very little difference, and in accessibility there's a promising looking rainbow under colour correction but sadly there are just a few colour-blind related presets) but nothing which would let you set the white balance manually.

Yep - which I appreciate. Obviously personal preference; native tuning options appear limited based on a bit of early experimentation.
On a related note, integrated "night light" (blue light filter) does a poor job with dark themes; throws off weird casts on light text when scrolling. I find it too distracting to use; just lower the brightness a tad more or use a 3rd party tool.
Looks good to me, where I can tell is looking at skin tones I find them very natural.
Got a picture of a beach water deep blue, sky look natural blue.
Taste maybe but it like it the way it is.
The setting mentioned my screen is on Adaptive, changing it does no effect much ??
Yes the screen is slightly yellowish and can't be changed even with the available presets. Fortunately I don't mind it personally since I prefer warmer whites compared to cold tones.
Yes, quite annoyed in warmth difference in the beginning because I was still using both 4a and my old phone actively. Searched here n there to make it cooler and also tried to make my old phone screen bit warmer to match (cause I just hate the difference not the warmer screen), but I don't like it even further with the tuning
All I can say is give it time, you'll slowly adapt to the new warmer screen
Yes I was just using a Moto One Active for a few weeks, which has a surprisingly decent LCD screen with perfect whites, and now that I'm back to using a Pixel 4a again I'm noticing that yellowish tint. Also had the galaxy s20 FE somewhere in between , which was obviously superior to both lol.
