Forget the bleeding lcd edges , its the horrible contrast on this phone that will probably cause me to return it.
After coming from the inky black Amoled screen on the Nexus s , this is the most disappointing aspect of otherwise top of the line phone. You can't get a true black on this phone , the best it does is dark glowing gray. In fact anything with a black background looks gray , not total absence of light Black.
I realize that this phone has an LCD screen not an amoled screen , but I never thought the difference would be this pronounced. Example : when I power up my Nexus S the screen is pitch black and when the white Google logo appears , it will appear to floating in space in a dark room. The G2x display will put off it own light, making it very visible in a dark room.
Deep blacks are awesome but I find this screen better in other areas over AMOLED/SAMOLED IMHO. You have to pick what matters to you. I don't spend a ton of time looking at blacks so doesn't bother me

Agreed with you sir. The colors on this phone are awesome and I come from a Galaxy S 4G.
Its up to but every G2X I have sold out my store as well as mine the screen looks great. I am loving this phone for everything it has. Way better then my N1.
There's nowhere you can compare contrast of AMOLED because it's unlimited.
However, I think the black on G2x is a bit "darker" than my MT4 (good screen).

Agree... My moves encoded to WVGA 800x480 @2500k bit rate look great or just as good as my SAMOLED.
The blacks on AMOLED will always be darker than the blacks on LCD that uses backlighting. The blacks on amoled doesn't have light behind it so its gonna be darker, because there isn't a light source lighting up behind it. This comparison doesn't make sense. If you compare the GX2 any other LCD display on a phone it will out shine it hands down.

I am coming from a Vibrant and find the G2x display easier on the eyes. Yes the blacks looked better on the S-AMOLED but the colors are more natural on the G2x. However what I find to be most important is text look a lot better on the G2x display than the Vibrants Pentile display. I don't have to zoom in anymore to read text on webpages like I did with my Vibrant.
I have a thunderbolt and a nexus s also. The nexus s just sold on eBay. As previously stated you can not compare the blacks on a nexus s with the G2x, two totally different technologies. But compared to the thunderbolt the G2x shines. And the G2x has more clarity and better whites. When compared to the nexus s. G2x has great viewing angles. Over all a great screen, once you get past the back light bleeding.

Firstly i really love Atrix2. and i love the TFT display. i always hate the AMOLED ro Super AMOLED or SAP , because the AMOLEDs are colors distortion too much.
But now, the Atrix2 display color is too dark ,even i adjusted the brightness to 100%. there still something like the <dark grey> became to <black>, also the <dark blue> became to <black>, all the colors are too dark!
i took some photos and videos by Atrix2, and they are looks so bad on the phone, when i copied them to the PC then they are looks very beautiful and the colors are very true.
I particularly like this phone excepted the display. i'm so disappointed, yes the RGB pixel lets the texts looks much better, actually the brightness is enough too, but just all the colors are too dark.
i don't want to change another phone, i don't like Samsung or HTC.
So can someone fix this display problem? i'll appreciate that.

Wow, first report I've heard of this - I would take it back and exchange it - compare it to ones in store at least. For me, it looks brilliant and bright - outdoors even better than iPhone 4.
Yeah mines been great in that department. "almost" bright as Samsungs SMOLED.
I pitted my up against a SGS II in the store and I believe the blues are brighter on the SGS II. However the A2 is just slightly less brighter than the SGS II. The blacks are super black and the other colors pop nicely. I think my display is on the warmer side compared the cooler side of the SGS II. However I have zero complaints with my display. I keep my display on 0% brightness at the work place and it looks just fine.

Actually mine is doing the same. Take for example I was watching Iron Man 2 and the race track scenes were perfect, FANTASTIC. But the scenes where it was dark were HORRIBLE. The night scenes from any video are really bad.

Yes i think we got same point. the dark scenes and night scenes are very bad. it could be the display contrast is too high.
Its really annoying if its like gigii says so. But still some people think that as bright as samsung amoled.

It is super bright. I just watched the International. All the scenes popped and were perfect. I could see every detail. Even the night scenes were great because there were lots of night lights. Then there was a night scene inside the back of a car with a black interior. That same video on my old Ipod 3rd gen touch you could see all the details of the seat etc... inside the car. On the Atrix 2 it was so bad it was like they floated in black.
Now the deal is I would rather have the Atrix for sure. I love the super high rez and accept the trade off for super dark scenes. Nothing is perfect and I love this phone. grrrrrr
Don't worry. The Atrix 1 screen is just as bad, if not worse. It's black crush is *horrid*.
I think the screen is great looking if not doing anything dependent on perfect color. Text is extremely crisp and most stuff looks nice if it isnt dark.

I love the screen
The Atrix 2 does not have a pentile display like the Atrix 4G did. Therefore, it is far improved for certain colors such as green, yellow and black.
However, a true black is difficult for LCDs of any variety. The color on the Atrix 2 is not as vivid when compared to other phones, especially the SGS series, however it should be noted that when you get down to it, the colors on the SGS line are actually overly vibrant, and as such are indeed further from the *true* color of whatever it is you are looking at VS the Atrix 2.
This is determined by doing color tests, however tests are really BS, because its more about taste than anything else.
As to the Atrix 2 having a hard time with dark scenes, I have not experienced this to the degree described in the thread. I find the screen to be quite vivid, blacks / dark screens included. Even at low brightness it seems far improved over the OG Atrix.
The iPhone 4 series has a better color definition in MY opinion, however when I tested it against a color test, it was not as true as the Atrix 2, being slightly over vivid.
I'd recommend exchanging your A2 for a different one given the description of the problem, as I have issued 70 of these things out to company employees and never seen one be as bad as what is described.
I got the point of gigii.
You see, it's NOT about the backlight being too dark, it's the color contrast itself. Try getting another android phone, let's say, a Motorola Defy. Do NOT compare with any AMOLED/SUPER AMOLED.
Try installing yahoo messenger app. I chose to compare this coz you'll see the obvious difference with the color.
You will notice that the color purple is DARKER in Atrix 2 compared to any other phones.
I think this is intentional as the display would look more vivid given that you have proper backlighting. All colors have darker shades. This would actually "fool" us on having better color contrast. Some may not notice it but if you have another phone to compare to (a TFT LCD unit perhaps) then you would know.

try this app to view your picture :
"Perfect Viewer" , it can immediately apply gamma correction when browseing picture.
set gamma 1.1~1.3 is helpful.
I still can not find a video player app which can provide gamma correction function.
Any one suggest ?
Besides, I also use "Screen Adjuster" to increase color temperature because I feel the white color is too yellow. (set Blue value15~20)
I keep my brightness at the lowest for battery life, looks good to me.

The OP said it only works for samsung phones, but I tried it any ways =P. No luck.

Promising, seems to correlate with a CNET article someone posted earlier about improved color accuracy and display calibration options. Although I don't really see the use as none of the apps, photos or website you'd see on the phone operate in Adobe RGB or support color management. I'd just stick to Movie, which seems closer to sRGB and should provide the most accurate colors.
Wonderful..
I was going to ask this question when I saw DisplayMate's tweet.

From dpreview:
With the new Adapt display mode enabled, the differences were even more pronounced. This adaptive display setting automatically adjusts the contrast and brightness of the display depending upon the content you're viewing, optimizing based on whether you're watching a video, looking at an image, or reading a Web page or book, for example. On the S4, the Adapt display feature is more universally applied than on the Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet.

Does anybody know if this corrects the blue Viagra tint that everything has on all of Samsung's other phones?
I have been planning to purchase the HTC One, but am getting really, REALLY frustrated with HTC. The lack of a Menu button, expandable storage and removable battery hurt, but none of that was enough to overcome my complete distaste for the Samsung Viagra screens.
Now, with the One being delayed, the news that the 64 GB One will not be on Sprint and my becoming more and more convinced that the "Ultrapixel" idea was a huge mistake, I'm starting to rethink my decision.
If Adobe RGB actually makes the whites white and takes the blue tint out of everything else, too, then I'm pretty much sold on making the GS4 my first non-HTC phone in years.
From GSMArena...
The color saturation is beyond the reach of any LCD out there, which make even the dullest image appear remarkably vibrant. Still, if you are not a fan of the oversaturated look of AMOLEDs, Samsung gives you the option to tune down the saturation to more natural levels and enjoy the best of both worlds. There's a dedicated Adobe RGB setting that gets this done.

Why don't they just build in a set of sliders to adjust hue, saturation, tint,... like you can do on a monitor?

Unfortunately there is no such setting like this wonderful one on gs3. I am very eager to see what this adaptive display can bring to amoled display. Of course I cannot be sure about anything regarding S4, but I kind of thought that blueish screen went out of fashion with Note2. It isn't as warmly white as say lg ips, but the difference is more like setting your monitor to warm vs. cold colour temperature. I can only assume S4 is at least as white as N2. Each has different matrix. S3 pentile and S4 pentile but special, N2 full RGB.

Maybe Note2 would be a better option. In natural colour saturation is identical to lg I ips. Tested on Earth from ISS and display tester, while in movie mode the colours are even less saturated on amoled. White are warmer on lg ips ofc, but without directly looking at both one would never say so. Blacks are on the other hand light years apart.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a Note 2. I may just have to go check one out at the store on a lunch break this week.
I've been poking around for reviews on Youtube and found this one, where the GS4 is next to the HTC One for a substantial period of time. I'm assuming it's just in standard mode, but even then, the GS4 colors look pretty natural, to me. I'm not leaning pretty strongly towards the GS4.
edit - At the 8:00 minute mark he goes into a web browser on both units. The whites on the One actually look a littler bluer than the GS4.

Yeah I just wanted to point out that at 8.00+ in Internet browsers, while white might look a tad stronger (higher brightness) on One, there doesn't seem to be particulary strong greenish tint on amoled and white looks white.
Also from GSMarena (BTW, I see there are now comparative reviews with One and Xperia Z):
What you should take away from all this is that the final weak point of the Super AMOLED screens has been taken care of and the Galaxy S4 offers image quality like no other smartphone on the market. Its impressive contrast and almost perfect viewing angles make everything on the screen pop, regardless of your viewpoint. The brightness levels of the Samsung Galaxy S4 are about on par with the rest of the company's AMOLEDs, which is to say not very high. However, due to their low reflectivity, this doesn't affect outdoor performance. Keep in mind that enabling the auto tone setting in the screen option limits the maximum brightness to under 300 nits, so if that matters to you, you better keep it off.

I honestly never heard of that. I went to check where mine was made, but it only says "Made by Samsung". It's the same on the box and under the battery, which is weird. Its a model for EU. Anyway Note 2 is not the topic. I am very happy with mine. But I will make a photo some other day to compare white and screen modes between N2 and LG 4x, as I found no similar comparisons on internet yet...
Edit: So, naturally I couldn't go to sleep without finding out where my N2 was made in and although I still didn't find direct imprint on the phone or the box the battery and manuals suggest they were made or printed in Vietnam. Not really important, since except for one sd card fail, everything works perfectly for 6 months now.

That's really terrible if it's true. I edited the post, saying that i suspect mine being made in Vietnam. But the difference in white in comparison to s3 is real. So I must either be lucky or there is different batch heading for EU with different QA/QC. I really cannot imagine seeing such differences and how people would tolerate it since it was a 700eur phone. The one In store appeared normal, same as mine- that is to say- best screen I've ever seen... I even compared it to bunch of other phones. But there was only one note2 on display so couldn't compare and didn't want to open mine right there.
So. I won't go off topic any more, but if this helps someone to decide on something why not... Comparisons of white, all on max brightness:

I watched a few reviews of the Nexus 5 and in the most part the screen appears a little washed out, with very low contrast.
Is the screen really that bad? I don't expect it to be the best in the market for 350 bucks, but neither do I want to have a device that looks like somebody glued a thin piece of paper on top of the display.

Honestly, the screen is pretty bad. It's the thing I hate most about my N5. Like you said, low contrast and fairly washed out colors. The black levels are downright terrible, and it's also got some viewing angle problems. It's passable, but that's about the closest thing to a compliment I can say about it. Unfortunately, the crappy screen belies the overall quality of the phone. It's a great device, LG just cut the wrong corners.
I don't have a problem with the screen. Nothing about it seems worse than my old Rezound.

"It’s interesting to hear some Nexus 5 users complain that the display seems undersaturated, since that kind of end user feedback reflects subjective comparison. It also suggests to me that a large percentage of the population doesn’t know what some colors or system elements actually should be. Even for me, looking at the green elements inside the Google Play store on the Note 3 in movie mode or Nexus 5 initially seemed slightly more muted than normal. The reality is that this is what they actually should look like. We’ve just become accustomed to their oversaturated appearance on virtually every other device.
This kind of expectation about what looks right and what doesn’t is rather telling for the state of display calibration in Android handsets, and how OEMs have used oversaturated colors to increase retail shelf appeal. Unfortunately the reality is that oversaturated colors do seem to win taste tests among shoppers, the same way that TVs in most big boxes do. We’ve been looking at them for so long that well calibrated displays like Nexus 5 initially do look noticeably different.
The end result is easy to sum up, however – Nexus 5 has the best calibrated display I’ve seen so far in any Android handset. It’s also leaps and bounds more accurate and controlled than its predecessor display in the Nexus 4." - Anandtech Review

I think the N5 has one of the best screens I've used on a phone so far. People that say it's dull and washed-out are probably those who prefer the blown out colors of AMOLED screens.
Coming from an sgs2 with amoled screen I love the truer colors and clarity of this screen!

I got my nexus 5 and was worried about the screen, but no issues. No dead pixels, the screen only slightly washes out when viewed at an angle (meaning only people nitpicky people would be annoyed by it. I personally think the screen is still easy to view, and read from even an extreme angle. But I have seen videos of others with nexus 5's that looked unbearable, so I'm sure the issue exists. Maybe I just got lucky and different screen hardware.
I dont really notice washed out colors in general, but the color temps are definitely different than my iPhone 5, which to me felt a bit too bright/blue compared to my nexus, easier on the eyes.

This screen isn't washed out. You want washed out, get in a time machine and order a launch Nexus 4.

Nexus 5 screen is one of top pick on the market for those who said the color or contact washout are getting poisoned by Samsung devices what you see on nexus 5 screen is more natural and real color. If people complain the nexus 5 screen are easy to break I will agree but not the color.

Hi everyone,
It's my first time using a Nexus device.
I just switched from Samsung Galaxy S2.
With the samsung screen, the black is a real black whereas in the Nexus the black shows the backlight of the LCD (or however it is called now) screen so there's this white glow coming out when it supposed to be pure black screen.
I'm not referring to when the phone is off, I'm referring to when it suppose to display pure black background like when using the Daydream clock feature.
I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to understand if this is how it supposed to be
Thanks

It's normal. Use this for awhile and then go back to the s2, I have one too. You'll see how much better this screen is.
I agree that sharpness and colours are amazing on the Nexus but it's not the black colour / contrast I got used to from the S2.
I came from an S3 and I love the screen quality. I can actually see my phone in daylight.

samsung uses samoled screens, the blacks are blacker and the colors are more vivid. but, samoled screens dont show the real colors, they are much more overly saturated. oh, and black.. samoled dont light up pixels for black, thats why it seems blacker.

I could see as well with the S2
Anyway, as I was saying, I'm not complaining or anything... I just didn't know if the black I was expecting to see on the Nexus is about the same as in the S2...
Unfortunately, I must admit that the S2 presented a much deeper black and the Nexus 5 displays white glow rather than black.
IPS != AMOLED
S2 -> AMOLED. That's almost pure blacks and too saturated colours.
N5 -> IPS. In the N5's case, pretty accurate colours, but with background light, cause the tecnology is like that. You're not gonna get black blacks with IPS. The panel is quite a lot better in every other aspect though.
thanks @Molitro
I agree that besides the blacks, this screen is amazing
As others have hinted, only Oled screens can turn their pixels off complely (0nits) and that's why they can do cool things such as active notifications on the Moto X. When looked on head on the black levels of the Nexus 5 IPS screen are quite good compared to other non Oleds. Infact it out right destroys my desktop and laptop Tn displays in that regards.
