So as you know the kit kat update brought back the smearing (which was more or less hidden until know) and is the most noticable when you are on the lowest brightness. But also there is a green tint on lowest brightness, most noticeably in videos. Now as you know apps like screen adjuster reduce this problem but what i found is that when activated screen adjuster (15 on contrast in my case) does the following: i was in youtube app to test and in portrait the video didn't had any green tint, while in landscape the tint appeared. And with some other video player (like mx) the tint was gone and the smearing was reduced or even gone. Note that in mx i wasn't using the screen adjuster app. So maybe just maybe there is something in the software that samsung messed up. If a dev can look into this maybe we can figure out something.

Been using Samsung phones aswell as others for years and never had a single fault. They all latest over a year before being sold on with zero issues. I've had an S4 since launch and it's still working perfectly. As far as reliability and build-quality goes Samsung is the best in the business, and by build quality I mean how well its assembled and reliability NOT the material the case is made of which many of you care so much about.

Same for me, i keep my screen at about half brightness and it is fine, i can't say i have looked overly close at all though..
Since the s4 true black pixels get completely turned off, the smearing you see are those pixels turning on again. It's a hardware thing.
Can't say I've noticed any difference. Can you elaborate at all?

Hardware limitation of OLED screens. Pixels take some time to go from completely off (black) to a lighter color such as blue or gray resulting in that weird trailing. AFAIK, the older version of the software didn't use pure black (pixel off) in the menu but a slightly lighter shade of black (so that the pixel would not be completely off). I still noticed it in some moving scenes in movies though when pure black was used.
For the green tint I don't know, I remember when I switched from LCD on my Sony phone to the S4 I noticed it had tinted whites and weirdly saturated colors but now I'm used to it and I don't notice it anymore and I actually kinda like the saturated colors even though they aren't very realistic.
Haven't seen one since switching from my bloody ****ty Galaxy W I8150 which had a really bad white smearing effect (v3 HW rev). Using the exynos version with MFD: 2013:12:24 (christmas eve baby!)
There MIGHT be differences with screens manufactured at different time/version/revision but that's just an uneducated guess.

i just started this thread to get your opinions regarding the display quality of the note3!
i have to admit upfront that i'm a hypocrite when it comes to amoled screens, so far i had to switch all of my amoled devices a least 5 times until i got a unit which satisfied me. done this with the first note, and also with the second.
as far as i can say the screen of the note3 is the best i've ever seen (by far better black-levels as note1 and note2), although i also identified a few flaws as well:
the color RED has very bad viewing angles: when tilting the device a little bit the color gets orange immediately.
try this by enter *#0*# in the dialer, and click on "red" then tilt the device. let us know how "your red" is, thx!
the gamma of the screen is totally screwed: can see down to "1" in gammatest.png:
the disadvantage of this is that you are actually able to see dark grey screens which you should not.
on the left side of the screen border there is a small strip which has also more gamma then the rest of the screen, in menus etc.
this is clearly visible when its dark around. also only visible when at least a little grey is to display, pure black is ok!
this week i will test one or two more note3's, just to have a comparison and to determine if the quality spread is as big as with previous devices. for note1 and note2 the differences between devices were really huge. some screens were near to perfect, most of them had flaws with color unevenness.

just got my second note (this time from amazon.de): the screen is considerably better!! the "more gamma" strip on the left side is non existent on the second device, in gammatest.png the screen is much more uniform! also the red viewing angle is better, it still fades to orange when tilted, but not as much as with my first device!
conclusio: the big differences in screen quality are still existant, it's still luck of the draw if you get a decent one or not...
also the general build quality differs: on the second device the pcb is not exactly in the middle of the casing, the camera hole is not centered in it's protrusion, and the power button extends a little more out of the casing.
again, i may be a "little" freaky about this things, but for > €700 I want to have a decent device!
screen quality is very important for me, because i read a lot with the device, especially in dark environments where the left gamma strip i mentioned was really annoying! i also showed this to a few colleagues of mine, and they agreed.

another finding: when CPU load is high, the brightness jumps between a lower (darker) and a higher (brighter) state, even if brightness is set to manual: both devices show this behavior, although not exactly identically: my first device needs more load to start with this (it takes longer), the second one starts the dimming relatively early.
how to test: load a stress test tool (cpu prime benchmark from google play) and let it run, set the brightness to manual maximum and wait.
you will see that after a few seconds the screen will go darker, and will switch between this states. this is independent from the brightness level, it is only better seen at maximum!
i guess this is some power and/or thermal limitation (when more cores are under heavy load), it would be interesting how this kicks in in summer when ambient temperatures are higher...

just to let you know: i'm now through 6 devices, all of them had display flaws in terms of uneveness.
a issue most of the devices suffer is the lower dark half of the screen: on 4 of my 6 note3's the lower half of the screen has been signifcantly darker then t´he upper half,
one had a very bad gamme increase on the left 2mm, one had a bad gamma increase on the top 2cm. 4 had a warmer white, two of them were more cold (more blue). could be due to missing or wrong factory calibration...
what is gone is the "blotch issue" i had with sgs2, note1 and note2, and: black is now really black!
but on dark grey levels the uneveness is clearly visible, look at the attached "gammatest.png"
this shows the lowest grey tones. and should be a very visible gradient from top to bottom.
go in a totally dark room, open the pic, zoom in max, and navigate to the top left corner. then pull the
picture down, and look how the numbers fade. for example: "6" should be at the same brightness level on top
and bottom of the screen. it definitely is not...
go out and test for yourself, and post your findings!

OLED screens are the only ones I know of that can get true black. With OLED the pixels make there own light so no back light is needed, thus black pixels are not being used at all so a black image has a nice inky black color. You notice it the best when you have a colorful picture with black in it.

sorry, but this is a wrong statement. all amoled screens so far were NOT totally black, even if you displayed a totally black image! the reason is that if the screen is active the display controller is powered (which is the case when displaying a black image, and not if the screen is "off") which can be seen as a faint and VERY dark glow. you can only see this when the room in which you are is totally dark, and your eyes had time to accommodate. to make it worse: on all AMOLED devices i've seen so far there were patterns (like hair lines and blotches) in this grey glow, due to the manufacturing technique used (lithography).

answer: note3 is the first device where i cannot see this dark glow, even in a total dark room! so a big improvement on this side. not sure what they changed, but the glow is definitely gone!

Red turns orange when screen is tilted, yes. Black are true blacks in Note 3. If you go to a pitch black room, and display a completely black screen in Note3, the phone will blend in and disappear.

Please make a quick guide of what to test and what to look for on a new note 3, in order to decide whether or not to return or warranty claim. Basically: On arrival, what would you check for, and what result would make you return it and get a replacement? How much of any issue would be ok for you to keep it..?
N3 screen : brighter and look better than Note 2 and S4 but still can not compare to the best IPS screen about white color

You'll do that with any Android phone whether LCD or AMOLED because their screens aren't individually calibrated (iPhone's are). So there's some degree of acceptable production tolerances that means all built won't be identical. So whatevery you went through before you'll go through again with the N3.

My only concern with AMOLED is the blotches that show on a grey screen in a dark environment like the first time I noticed it using Facebook. I had to replace my first Note II and even the second has some blotches but not quite as big and bad.
I've attached a grey background for your convenience to see if your AMOLED has blotches. You'll need to be in a dark environment like reading at night without the lights on (simulate by going into the bathroom and turning off the light).

My ps vita has those blotches really bad!
You only see them in a pitch black room but I think they are the same thing.

Pointing out to OP that the leaking light on the Note 2 (and s3) is extremely reduced in the S4 and Note 3 - you should not compare the Note 3 with the Note 2 in that aspect.
Black wallpaper on n3 = better battery life then?
Other than seeing imperfections in impractical situations, is there anything about the display that is actually bad in normal use? I mean do you see whites on this phone and think, hmm that's more of an off-white or is it like so small in difference that you need a color spectrometer to prove that it's not "true" white?

I know what you mean. I had that on my note 2. Not so on my note 3. When I open black screen in a pitch black room, the phone becomes completely invisible as it blends in perfectly with the dark. And yes, I'm not exaggerating. It's the deepest black I've ever seen on any display, it's like the phone is actually turned off.

I swiched to samsung note 3 from samsung mega 5.3
Ive noticed that Note 3 colors are a bit dull just like s3. If u open a white image in both mobiles simultaneously u can clearly spot tgat mega's display is much nicer.
Ive tried the display options but still its not much different.
Anyone else noticed this? Any solutions?

The Note 3 and Mega line use different panels. Note 3 uses AMOLED while the Megas use LCDs (probably IPS or even TFT). I don't think there's much you can do to remedy this as I'm pretty sure what you're experiencing is just a "quirk" of AMOLED.

Ive been using note for a month now. I came across mega the other day(after a month) and really loved the feel and look of it
that tft display was more beautiful.
Besides that note 3 is awesome mobile love it. Gonna get used to colors
Its personal preference. I myself dont think I'll ever want to use IPS displays ever again.
I personally cant stand the wonky saturation in amoled displays. Currently have the screen mode on movie mode but still not perfect. Love the deep blacks though

+1 I'm in the same camp. Im on the movie mode screen profile and have also installed the app Lux. Setting the WB to Fluorescent(under night mode), to my eyes, improves the colour accuracy.

Its just that some people like myself prefer to have accurate colors instead of over saturated colors. The note 3's color calibration renders the colors almost neon looking. As for the sharpness, note 3 could still improve since it does not use the standard RGB subpixel arrangement.

I got my S7 today, the first thing I noticed is that the whites looked quite dull and uneven on the display, for example when browsing and scrolling up and down I'd notice the uneven white background, one side is brighter than the other.
This has always been the case for me on just about every samsung amoled I've had and it's always taken replacements to get a display I like.
I went into a store today and compared my S7's to the ones they had on display, I made sure to set the stores s7 to the same brightness as mine and making sure the phone was on adaptive mode and the stores s7 just looked so much better than mine, their was a blue hue but it made the whites brighter and more even
Has anyone had screen issues like this with their s7? Should I get a replacement? Even my old phone which isn't amoled has much brighter whites than the S7
can't explain any kind of gradient from one side to the other, but there is a setting on the S7 "Screen Mode" under the Display and Wallpaper menu gives you 4 different settings some of which will give a more yellowish hue as opposed to the blueish hue normally seen in modern displays.
On my S7, I sometimes notice the white background in Chrome browser to appear a bit yellowish. I didn't notice it any other app or maybe no other app had a significant white background. If I tilt the phone just a bit to thereby change the lighting, the yellow hue goes away and it appears white like it should. If I don't tilt and keep scrolling, the yellowish hue also turns white.
Sometimes, I've noticed it while using FlipBoard as well.
Since changing the angle fixes it, I presume it is software-related and have not considered replacement. To me, it didn't sound like a hardware fault.
If it appears in other apps or fixes altogether somehow, will post again.

Under Screen Mode, I have 'Adaptive display' selected. I see a note at the top stating 'This mode may not be compatible with third-party apps'.
Since it only occurs in Chrome and sometimes Flipboard, perhaps some third-party apps just don't play well with Adaptive display.
Switching to AMODEL photo changed the screen to the similar yellowish hue...! Anyway, I'm keeping mine at Adaptive display.
Hope the OP's issue is also limited to certain apps.

Do you have screen protector on? I found mine was not "very white" or yellow ish compared to other, because of my screen protector.
I'm thinking about switching from the pixel 2xl to this. I saw someone post a grey picture (OLED test) and it was horrible. The uniformity was the worse I've ever seen.
I think it's great. It's better than my old Moto g4 plus and that phone had an impressive screen as well although it was an LCD and not AMOLED. The colors are great and you won't really notice the pixels since it's 1080p and it will give a longer battery as well for that reason.

I just used Dead Pixel Test, and the uniformity is literally perfect with the Silk White edition. All colors were literally perfect.
The screen is great. It looks as good as the one on my S8+ that I just sold. You'll be extremely happy with the screen in the OP6.

I just used a website with the pixel test images, lowered the brightness to minimum - it's perfect, there's no change in brightness anywhere on the screen. It's perfectly uniform. Whoever posted that image got a lemon that he needs to exchange.

Just Google grey test OLED and look for a solid grey image. Turn your brightness all the way down and see how uniformed it is
compare to my old nexus6, my new oneplus6 has significantly better Amoled screen, however it's way to narrow compare to nexus6 which missed a lot.
Also, oneplus6 screen is extremely better than my old nexus5 with that lcd garbage.
S9+ perhaps has a bit better screen than oneplus6 but it has retarded and highly inconvenient and highly uncomfortable curve which is huge deal breaker for me.

Do you want the screen to be bad or something? I googled your oled test business and used 2 different grey images from some posts that had uniformity problems from some other phones. There are zero for this screen. It looks perfectly uniform, nothing like the images for those problematic displays. This is a Silk White limited edition version of the phone. Even if there were problems with the screen in the past, they would definitely be gone for my batch of phones.

Calm down. I've seen pics on Reddit that were horrible. Like LCD bleed. I just didn't want to purchase if the display sucks like my pixel 2 XL. The p2xl was so bad

I have this problem since day 1. It looks like LCD bleeding but in an unnoticeable way. It has disturbed me while watching movies in a dark room with low brightness. Upper half of the screen seems like its too bright while the lower half seems too dark... But, no one will notice it with average brightness and lighted room..

Get a replacement, your display is defective.
EDIT: I just scrolled through Westworld Season 2 Episode 3 using VLC and adjusting brightness on the way. There were about 4 dark scenes, and I couldn't see any imperfections with my display. The uniformity was perfect.
Maybe some people got some crappy ass lemons when a factory QC worker was drunk. It ain't the case here.

My Note 20 ultra has some Display problems.
When my phone is on a lower brightness and Adaptive(120Hz) refresh rate setting on a grey background, I can see all sorts of funky horizontal lines across it.
(except gallery - i think the refresh rate reduce to 60hz in gallery automatically so in gallery you can't see the problem).
I see them big time on settings screens or Apps where there is a gradient of gray.
see the attached Picture. Two pics with 120Hz(Adaptive) Display Refresh Rate and others with 60hz!
Note: the problem seems to be more than real in these pictures because of camera, with eyes you can't see such this bad!
Any one here with this problem?

You have a defective display get it replaced ,& no this isn't normal with oled screens

I can see with eyes but very rare, just when the screen is on 120 Hz and lowest brightness. On 60Hz everything's ok!

Is that in a completely dark room?
If you're not using a incandescent light source for room lighting that may cause it.
Otherwise regardless of screen brightness or display frequency it should be not be showing anything except what's being displayed.
At that price it better be spot on.

The horizontal lines is static, not moving. And you can see just in Gray Backgrounds with lowest brightness and 120hz.

Hi. I just got my Note 20 Ultra and I have the same problem. I see streaks in my photos. If I switch between 60 and 120Hz, sometimes the lines disappear, but not always.

Not good. Was thinking maybe background LED lighting might be "strobing" it.
Probably a firmware issue but could hardware is my guess.
Maybe software... try clearing the system cache on boot menu, a hard reboot and clearing graphic driver data even if it reads zero. If you have PD MDM use that to clear instead of in Settings.
Mine does the same. I think they all do it some people just don't notice it.

Yes, I know someone that replaced the phone, but new phone has the issue too.

Do you normally use that low a level at night?
I have excellent center vision; my 10+ goes dimmer than I will ever use. No flicker or color anomalies though.
It may be the physical hardware limits of the device or they may eventually patch a firmware flaw.
They also may have inadvertently set the lower limit of the brightness too low...
If it doesn't effect night usage I might ignore it.
Samsung can be notoriously slow at fixing firmware/software glitches in their products.
Amazingly even after almost 2 years they are still patching both firmware and software on the original Buds. They now perform much better then a year ago. Crazy.

Frankly it's always visible since I know what to look for. when I'm not looking for the it, it's when it's really annoying to see.
I have a note 9 and a 10+ which I still daily drive both on their own sims. The difference in screens is very noticeable. The 120 hz mode is the problem. Put the phone in full resolution and it's way better.
The screen on the n20u is less vibrant than my other notes, but it's more color accurate so I like that.

That's seems annoying. Guess using a lower frequency at night be the easiest solution. Sammy throws out a lot of betaware that needs more work...
On the 10+ Pie the display settings are goofy for screen mode. If you set it to "vivid" it's way oversaturated. Natural is the best setting but you have little ability to dail it in much more than that.
I'm curious about these controls on the 20U and Q.
Any improvement?

Honestly don't notice a difference switching between the two in n20u, on note 10+ yes big difference.
So I tried the green slider mod setting where you dial it all the way down under advanced display setting.
Its not much of a difference, it does reduce it a little. The screen becomes purple dominant obviously but the green fringes still show.

On the 10+ the color sliders are weak too.
A 3rd party overlay app works but is a pain.
Overlay apps won't work with Q though I believe.
Rather sloppy of Goggle and Samsung... this is an ongoing issue with Androids; no color calibration
Fortunately the 10+'s aren't too bad but it the color blind coders need to get up to speed...

OLEDS are horrible sceens, but similarly to screen-to-body ratio we have brightness race now, a useless but review-happy attribute which does help your eyes only in very rare situations. Otherwise it makes your eyes tired with pulsing. For use in dark these screens are bad. You will also got ugly backbleeding as a bonus. Horror movies are unwatchable.
I have this with each phone nowadays, and there's no escape from it. I can see the lines on Note20U too, of course. It even blinks when you're tired. The backbleeding is rather uniform tho and not so intensive.
Funny as I use mobile 90% in dark, i prefer dark mode, and i like dark movies Killer trio.

It's not the OLEDs that are the issue as the display on my 10+ is the best display I ever used.
It's the firmware/drivers and perhaps the >60 hz hardware. It's very disconcerting that it's not sorted out yet.
Well that's Samsung. It may be fixed. Samsung just pushed out yet another Buds+ firmware update today. Wow. They keep trying, I'll give them that... the best the Buds+ ever sounded.
So there's hope. The bad news is it will most likely need to be a firmware update if it is fixable.
Flashing the Buds is a lot easier (and less risky) than patching the bloody phone firmware.
Based on issues like this and the abomination that Q and above are, I may simply buy another backup 10+ 512gb phone running on Pie and call it good for the next 3 years.
Both Samsung and Goggle/Android have been practicing drop the ball like drooling kindergarten ftards lately

see the attached Picture. Two pics with 120Hz(Adaptive) Display Refresh Rate and others with 60hz!
Note: the problem seems to be more than real in these pictures because of camera, with eyes you can't see such this bad!
