Stock Launcher Draining Battery? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I just had a thought and was wondering if anyone had the answer to this. So, since the stock launcer on the N5 has the always listening feature, do you guys think using a different launcher would increase battery life? I know the S800 has the capabilities of low power speech recognition but just a thought.

[Q] Is Overclocking Bad???

Hey people i was wondering if overclocking the inspire is bad. what will happen? other than battery drain and heating. can it overheat?
EDIT: another, unrelated question: is there an app to make widgets and apps just go where you want them to be put, without a grid?

[Q] New owner here. Anyone else like a low res screen? Hows my theme?

Hi, Im new here, this might be my first post as I dont remember setting up an account but I guess i did cause I could login.
I was just wondering if anyone else liked having a low res screen? I do myself because games run smoother and the battery drain isn't as great. I run taxing programs too like emulators.
I haven't noticed any light bleed. I was getting reboots though. I took someone's advice and unistalled tmobile apps with titanium backup. That seemed to fix it. After it was working I played around with some cyanogen builds but they don't quite seem ready for 24/7 use. Im currently on the leaked tmobile gingerbread 2.3.3.
I am coming from an N900 and do not like the way Android multitasks, but thats as far as my complaints go. I ran android on n900 thru nitroid so I knew what I was getting.
I am curious about an oveclocking kernel and if it is compatible with stock tmobile 2.3.3 (the leaked gingerbread).
I like simple themes so I thought Id show a screenshot of mine. There's no scrolling. Its only 1 page. Set to fast mode with ADW launcher. Using clockr widget, widgetsoid, and some widget besides stock music player I get this with a wallpaper from the HD wallpaper app.
The angry birds icon, nes icon, and folder icon open folders to android games, emulators and programs respectively. I think the icons I used are the glass sense ADW theme if i remember correctly
Read my launcher review thread. Launcher Pro runs the best on the G2x out of Go, ADW and Zeam. Its even smoother than the stock launcher and much more smoother than ADW.

My battery lasts longer than my low resolution G1, so it's not the battery drain that gets me. I've been sticking with the default resolution on this thing because I can type crazy fast with it. If I increase the density, I start getting mistypes.
I always swapped back and forth between ADW and Launcher Pro back in the day, but with the G2x I find myself sticking with the default launcher.

I meant more so the stock resolution vs. a super amoled screen. Higher res and larger screen means more battery used especially considering its got tegra under the hood.

[Q] Ram management issue on the s6 causes lag?

Hey guys I am sorry if this question is asked again, but does the ram management issue on the s6 cause lag in day to day usage or it just deters the multitasking performance? Gonna buy the s6 tomorrow, and Im damn excited

It will mean if you use the back key to come out of apps, sometimes they will reload, such as phone and messaging etc, but only usually games will be closed regularly and aggressively. General lag isn't a problem, just a slight delay loading aps back into memory once they've closed.
I find if I back out of apps using the home key this problem is reduced.

How about scrolling through apps such as chrome ,Facebook ,play store. Does this issue cause any lag?
I've never really experience any huge lag. I turn off my device once in 2 days so maybe that helps.

90% of users won't even notice the memory management "issue". Only hardcore multitaskers will. The "issue" is the S6 kicks apps out of cache very quickly so whenever you tap the multitask button, the app relaunches/redraws instead of resuming from a hibernated state. There is a little lag (~0.5 second), but it is not a dealbreaker that would prevent you from enjoying the phone.

Chrome lags on every device I have owned, including the S6. Any app that uses Android WebView will lag.
I don't use facebook, so I can't speak for that app.
No Play store lag on my S6.

Really, I did'nt notice the problem with multitasking (because the S6 is so fast) before I read about it here.
Also, all the **** you hear about the battery life is not true. Of course, it's not the best out there (only 2550mah, so of course not) but it easily get you through the day (normal usage) and at least into another. The battery have gotten way better with a few updates (it was damn bad at the start) and might get even better when 5.1 hits in a few weeks.
Just turn of basic stuff, that noone uses anyway (almost) like, location history, wifi always scanning and such.

Glad to hear that, by the way 5.1 just came out recently and its showing mixed reactions among the users. Some people says that the battery life has improved a lot after the update and some just says its the same.

No, it's not out yet. At least not for the international version. Some users think, that the reason only one carrier got it yet, is because it is a "test" version. Not sure tho.
But well, as said, only out for one carrier for over a week now.

Yeah the battery life is overblown. It is no worse than any other phone with <2500 mAh battery. Anyone coming from a 3000+ mAh battery will be disappointed, but anyone that is used to plugging in every day won't know any different.
If you are rooted, I also recommend App Ops to manage permissions and save more battery :good:
Check Force gpu rendering and no lag. As far as it regards multitasking it sucks.

Battery life would be longer like that?

Hello everyone
i was wondering whether installing a safestrap rom i mean would some basic rom increase the speed of the phone allowing for underclocking the cpu for more life out of the battery
also less apps and processes
im running android 4.4 stock rom and the battery life is really really terrible
i wish you guys can help me with what im trying to achieve and i hope it is possible
if u guys have any tricks or ways to make the battery last longer tell me

Do custom kernels significantly increase battery life?

So I just picked up a pixel 3 and the battery life is fairly mixed but I guess I was spoiled with my previous device (Oneplus 5).
Will installing a custom kernel improve my battery life? I haven't really bothered since my Galaxy S2 which was a shambles.
If so, are there any specific kernels which aim to do this by default?
My opinion is that this is all imaginary.

A custom kernel typically gives you the option to customize the way it behaves. Increased battery life will come at the expense of performance. But even then you won't see a major difference. The biggest battery killer is poor cell service. Also, eliminate apps that run in the background, at least the ones you don't need running all the time. Screen brightness is another large battery user. Google does a pretty good job of optimizing the kernel out of the box.

They used to, quite a bit. But most of that went away with O. There just isn't that much left to optimize anymore. Now they are about extra features.
