[Q] Does the Nexus 5 get hot? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just what the title says. Does the Nexus 5 get hot like the GS3 or Nexus 4 did? I am curious as I have one ordered and would rather know now instead of worrying later on when I get it.

My HTC One X gets a lot hotter when i play games.

Yeah, my GS3 gets face burning hot just when browsing, so I am curious to see if it will be the same for the Nexus 5 when I get it. I don't usually play games on my phone as I have low vision, I plan on getting the Nexus 10 2013, or whatever they might call it when it comes out.

Mines haven't been hot but I am using a custom kernel and not using the regular kernel thermal
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

It gets warm. But certainly not burning hot like my S4.

Are there any current-model smartphones that don't have noticeable temperature increase when under heavy load?

My N4 got hotter, this gets pretty warm, but not uncomfortable .

Do high performance smartphones under strain and staying cool even exist?

Mine hasn't gotten hot at all, and definitively not as hot as my S4 got sometimes.

I expect heat under heavy load, but just browsing the web or watching a video?

It does get a little warm, but the nexus 4 had a glass back thus the heat. I mean I did tests and more tests . Played two hours of dead trigger 2 and it held up awesome. I mean it did get warm, but what do you expect ... Its running a snap dragon 800 @ 2.3 and a adreno 330. So far for me its preforming amazing.

If you watch many pornz, yes.

Coming from the Nexus 4, the Nexus 5, in my experience, definitely runs hotter on LTE.

Is lg thrill better than infuse?

Ok i have 2 infuses and i wanted to trade one of them for and lg thrill just for curiosity to try a 3d phone and i made post andone guy laugh at me what do do u think about that?

lg thrill is trash.
i just returned it
LG thrill is faster. dual core dual chanel ram same gpu but frame rates may be better due to he other feature mentioned.
is it better? better at what? there is not often better/worse. there is only what each does/doesn't do. the thrill will browse sites with a lot of content much better and may be better for gaming.
the 3d is a joke. it is less impressive to look at the 3d than it is to look at the 2d infuse screen. it doent have good black levels or vivid colors.
the infuse is light and thin but feels flimsy (because it is, the captivate was build much more solid) but the thrill looks cheep and has a lot of edge area. it is within about a millimeter of the infuse with a smaller screen and thicker.
the thrill is a good preformer especially with browsing but may feel slow if you open the camera app. there is definately something not right with that but it might get updated. the infuse has dated core hardware but looks more impressive, will get android 2.3.5 soon enough and I have no complaints.
I miss my thrill
I tweaked it and ran gtg thriller rom and it was plain awesome.
The 3d was great. good content is rare and most people hold the phone wrong

Looks like the Thrill has the same quality control issues the G2X has. I'm on my second, and it's worse than my first one. Battery lasts about 5 hours, drops 10%/hour when idle. It gets HOT when charging, so hot that if you browse the web or do anything, it will reboot on you constantly. It's easily over the 40 degrees Celsius the battery is rated at.
Last night was the last straw for me... The screen got so hot, the adhesive that holds it in place melted, and I have black stuff melting down the inside of my screen. I haven't seen that since I was repairing the old Samsung Instincts.

In other words...it's a big fat NO. I was thinking of trading my infuse for one, but I see too many of the same complaints.
I see the Thrill more as a novelty toy than a phone.

the infuse had all those complaints ('cept the insane battery drian.) but I haven't seen new users say those things and mine doesn't do it any more. I wonder if the kd5 modem caused it on the early infuse models?

Does the Nexus 5 Easily heat up while playing games?

I just ordered my White N5 32GB from Google play store. I want to ask Nexus 5 owners if they encounter any overheating issue or the phones get hot while playing games and other tasks. My current phone Xperia Z heats up really quickly and people say this is common.
1 thing I can say, this runs a lot cooler than my gnex. I did run angry birds for 2 hrs straight 1 morning and it never got even warm.
Just played dead trigger 2 for 15 mins. Noticeably hot thru the back of my spigen ultra whatever case

Is it worth the upgrade from a nexus 4?

I have used a nexus 4 since February and am considering buying a nexus 5… other than screen quality and an increased storage capacity, is there a noticeable difference in speed? I know the s800 is technically way faster than the s4 pro but in real world performance is there a big enough advantage to upgrade? I'm curious because it is 400$ and I want to make sure its worth it, if not then I'll hold out till next years model.

I got my Nexus 4 in January and loved using it the entire time.
I opened up my Nexus 5 box earlier this week and am actually surprised how much more I love it than the N4. The feel (IMO) is better in my hands, the screen is whoaaaaaa, the speed is noticeable...if you have the money, get it.
the N5 is a great device. if you're enjoying your N4, though, there's no immediate reason to switch (imo).
i enjoy changing devices every 6 months or so. i like new devices even if there is nothing wrong with the previous device. other people prefer to not change what's working well at the moment.
cheers

Yeah I'm still not sure but I'll probably at least wait till my n4 is a year old, just don't wanna shell out 400$ for a device that ends up being hardly any different than the one I paid almost 400$ for 8 months before haha

as much as i LOVE my n4, my n5 just blows the n4 out of the water. it is just so much faster.

i never noticed a micro second of lag in my four, but im not talking lag. the nexus 5 is just faster, much, all over.
If i were you i would hold back for like a month or two till LG and Google get their heads together and apply tighter quality control.
but overall i have a N5 Day 1 310k and its perfect except a bit of light bleed on top left

Same here, but only on 3g. I cannot tell anything about LTE/4G, because I have to pay extra money for that network which I do not want to. On wifi the phone stays icecold.

Nexus 5 is not only Hot in appearances and by its style but it is also Hot when I
1. Using and browsing internet more than 1 hour.
2. Charging it more than 3 hours.
3. Clicking pictures continuously more than 1 hour.
4. Playing Games.
5. On call more than an hour.
Etc..:crying:
yeah mine gets pretty bloody hot after using it continuously for like an hour.

Pretty much all phones that I have used get hot when I'm gaming, browsing, taking pictures continuously etc...
What I don't understand is why people make a big fuss about it? It's not like it will melt your skin...
If you're rooted, you can use custom kernels to increase throttling but then people will complain that the phone lags.. Lol.
Temperatures ranging between 45-60 are pretty normal and especially when your living in hot places where the room temperature is 25-30*c
Just use your device and forget about the temperatures!

I'm experiencing pretty much none of that. My N5 only gets hot if I'm doing any CPU intensive gaming. Which I pretty much never do. No issues while browsing or anything else.
To OP. If you're unhappy with your One the N5 is a great phone. Differences to note tho: Sense. If you like it a lot then you will miss it. Speakers. There is no comparison between the speakers on the One and the N5.
Also, the carrier N5's are all 16Gb as far as I know. So be sure that it will be enough storage for you.
I'm incredibly happy with my N5
Um how about 120 degrees while sitting in the car browsing with chrome, for like 20 minutes? My phone has hit a max of 127 degrees.
Get the nexus 5 but not with sprint they suck. I cant wait till The end of may to go get AT&T. But it does get kind of hot sometimes but not so hot you have to put it down lol.
A device with a body made of metal alloys is ALWAYS going to feel warmer during strenuous operation than a device body fabricated out of plastic or composite materials. Mostly, that is a good thing, for both the device internals & battery life. Metal is a better conductor than plastic & also has a lower "R" value. These factors serve to allow the metallic device to better dissipate the energy transferred to heat, away from the device & into the cooler ambient air. While the exterior of the device may be warmer, the interior components are often cooler & they definitely cool down faster when they do heat up than they would in a plastic bodied device.
As to the question itself. The Nexus 5 can & does heat up like any other device & how noticeable it is, depends on how you use the device. Again, you will not notice the heat as much, but the internals of the device will. The Nexus 5 itself is a worthy device, tho I am using mine less & less as I find more to like about my new HTC M8. I am certain that you could probably find the Nexus 5 online for nearly any carrier for free, if not close. While I am a Nexus 5 fan, you just don't get the same quality in the Nexus line that you do with other flagship devices. GPS drift can be horrible on the Nexus 5 & I don't mean just from my experiences. I belong to a large Ingress group, many of whom use the Nexus 5, nearly all of them suffer from horrible GPS drift frequently. The M8 on the other hand, has been rock steady, gives me better AT&T 4G LTE signal & just all around rocks. HTC isn't providing a free, one time, 6 month screen replacement garuntee because the device is haphazardly thrown together partially based on the lowest bidder to mee the specification outlined by Google. Also, just know the the Nexus 5 battery is mediocre at best & without a lot of trial & error (& some help from Flar2's ElementalX) you are lucky to see 3 & 1/2 hours of screen on time. I was able to get it out to 5 & 1/2 hours, but again, it took a lot of tinkering & thankfully there was a solid kernel with good source available to build from.
One last thing. While you will benefit from regular software updates (which HTC has also made a part of their HTC Advantage program, not too mention they took Google's queue & started releasing modular updates in the form of Play Store service update packs) remember that in 6 months or so, the Nexus 6 will be out. At that time, based on Google's revised support schedule, you could potentially stop seeing updates on the Nexus 5 about 6 months after release. Now I don't expect that to happen, however, if the reports are true, it could, since it sounds like Google is wanting to go away from the Nexus program & stick primarily to GPe devices.
I don't think you'll be disappointed with the N5, but it just isn't the same type of quality as the HTC M7 or M8. Plus, now that there are GPE devices for both HTC models, converting to a GPe device that benefits from a Nexus-like update program is a simple thing.
At any rate, just some food for thought. I loved my N5, but I wouldn't buy it again today. At the end of last year, or even in January or February 2014, maybe, but not now. While you cannot go wrong with the QC SnapDragon 800, the Nexus 5 is primarily lower binned chips & the new 801 takes the same performance & enhances battery life. With only an additional 300mah, right out of the box I was getting nearly 6 hours of screen on time from the M8.

Mi4i or asus zf2

Hello friends, i have a nexus 4 from past 2 years and this phone is rock solid till date but just bored of this so wanna buy a new phone under 15k only, i have been looking these two devices from many days, mi4i has a brilliant display which is attracting me towards it and zf2 has a solid hardware plus mmc slot(however mmc slot is not my priority), yesterday it was the third time that mi4i was successfully added to my cart on flipkart but due to some bad reviews about mi4i that is poor performance and heating problem, i did not buy it, if its a software part then i am quite indulged in flashing stuff and i will not have any problem in flashing new roms, but if its hardware prob than i won't buy such device.
I just want the help of existing users that does this device really heats a lot even after new software update, and is there any performance issues on this phone, as many people saying thay are having lags while playing games or videos.
A brief suggestion would be appreciable

I was looking at both phones when i was looking for a spare phone. I didn't get the zf2 because i didnt like the power button placement on the top. The mi 4i also feels much nicer in the hand and so far it has been a good little phone for me. Just the 16gb is a little limited
