At the moment I have a nexus 4 and I'm quite happy about it, though some things could be better. I was wondering if the upgrade is worth it though? I can sell my nexus 4, and get a nexus 5 for 180€ extra. I know the big changes (screen, dimensions, camera, looks). But what about the little changes that matter to me. Is the speaker much better? How about microphone, call quality, wifi reception, loose hardware keys and pressability, scratch resistance of the back (do I need a bumper or not), slippery resistance of the back, touch responsiveness (nexus 4 wasn't very sensitive). Also softwareside (although nexus 4 will be getting it as well), I wondered if the google play store lost it dedicated soft key in the app drawer? And how do you place your widgets at the screen?
If some of these little irks can be solved, I'll be thankful!
Edit: I've ordered it anyway, but I would still like to have some feedback.
Pretty much the same quandary here. I ordered one but am having second thoughts. Had the Nexus 4 for almost a year and have been very happy with it. My only major complaint is that I get better cell reception on my old RAZR... especially when I am holding it.
I thought I'd try sprint via Ting to see if I get better service than T-Mobile, but now I am seeing remarks that Ting won't be able to activate it. Since it's still an lg, I am doubtful the radios will be any better, and as I am rarely in an LTE service area, no real benefit there. But if they are noticeably better that would be a big plus.
No real interest in more pixels as my eyes see the Nexus 4 screen as being just fine. I'm sure I'd appreciate the better camera, but have no real complaints about the Nexus 4 camera.
I rarely use the speaker as it is so unusable, but the HTC One is so far the only phone I've used that has usable speakers and am less than confident the Nexus 5 will be anywhere in that league.
This thread would probably be better served in the Nexus 4 forum.
That thread wouldn't be any helpful in the n4 forum. If you post here they'll say yeah because they got the n5 and if you're on the n4 they'll say stay. Either way you're going to get biased posts.
I'd say just go ahead and do it. It's a upgrade in every way. Think of it as a upgrade for your phone. I went for it because I'm a nexus fan boy and love the look of the nexus 5 so I went for it.
Plus. I'm not too much of a fan of the vibration on the nexus 4. It is severely weak for me

A crappy camera vs a much better version camera (same 8mp)
2100 mAh vs 2300 mAh (same sh!t IMO)
And 4.4 KitKat with fastest update from Google (main point).
Go for it, just ~$400. Or you want some kind of $600 with 4.2 Android?

I was torn as well and i can only tell you my reasoning. I also upgraded from a 16GB to 32GB. hated running out of room so damn fast with 16GB.
-Much better camera, in tests shots it destroys the N4
-Better battery life, in tests i've seen done and the official specs it's better than the N4 with LTE on. Now the battery is not much bigger but the better battery life is due to the processor and changes in android.
-dual speakers should bring a much louder device, and better sounding
For me, from what I've seen from people who have it, it fixes all of my hates on the N4, i wish it was smaller but so be it, at least it's not insanely larger than the N4.
it's up to each individual for what you want to do. If you go for off contract phones and you want to upgrade, this is your best bet right now unless your willing to spend the $700 on a GS4 or something similar, in my opinion.

yeah for me it's mostly just OCD of seeing less than 2GB. Plus unless it can get USBOTG i'll need that space if i ever want to put some movies or shows on it. Admittedly i don't do it often, but it's nice to know you can.
Anyway, here are the test shots i saw and i was very happy. Is it a DSLR? no, but IMO it's a lot better than the N4 and on par with most of the others, if not slightly better in some tests.

Its worth upgrading if you can afford it. KitKat is running so well on my N4 so I decided to stick with it a little longer.

I think in general it would run quite well for most devices as they optimized it more to work for devices with less ram. But yeah for the most part, nexus 4 is pretty smooth running kit Kat. The only upgrade would be the device itself in terms of screen size and some other nice small additions.

Someone else's 'worth it' probably isn't the same as your 'worth it'.
Seeing average prices on swappa for n4's are about $250, the n5 will be quite affordable after selling the n4.

Yes, you should definitely upgrade if you have money to spare. I sold my nexus 4 last weekend and got the nexus 5 today. totally worth it!
I just upgraded my Nexus 4 to a Nexus 5 and, while I was cautious at first, I think I made the right choice.
The N5 feels much brisker, the screen's much brighter and higher quality and the camera is...an improvement, albeit a small one. The biggest issue for me was getting the Snapdragon 800, which should be reasonably future proof.
I've had the HTC One since launch and have loved it so far...but when I heard about the Nexus 5, I ordered one. But now I'm having second thoughts, You guys think it's worth upgrading?

Bro im on your boat, im receiving my nexus 11/06, im sure its worth it 100%, the only thing that worries me are the speakers. other than that better screen better cpu.
I actually went from the HTC One to the Moto X, and now my Nexus 5 is coming on Thursday. For me, I never really used the speakers on the One, so personally that point (and really one of the only ones that the HTC One has on the N5, outside the aluminum chassis) doesn't matter too much for me.
For me, the Moto X was actually a more enjoyable phone to use than the One. I think it's the whole stock android experience that just makes me happier to use my phone. I did put AOSP on my One, but I did go back to Sense just because I wanted the IR to work at the time. I just sold my One the other day to fund my N5 purchase.
I ordered the Nexus 5 because of it being future-proof and it gets the Android updates first. I absolutely love my One and I will probably miss the speakers more than anything. Besides the speakers on the One, I have no regrets in ordering the Nexus 5.

What makes you think better screen? Theres so many people on craigslist dumping there nexus phones. The phones are purely designed for flashoholics. When samsung made the nexus they always made sure it was a step below the galaxy line. LG will always make sure its a step below the G series. The phone dosent compare to an S4, G2, Note 3, HTC ONE and from what ive been reading the moto x just blows it out the water.
My co-worker recieved his today so i had a hands on experience and i wouldnt take a nexus + cash for my htc one. I have 2 upgrades i can use and wouldnt dare use them on the nexus. Its the same thing every year. Alot of hype, google store sells out bc people wanna try to flip em like there an iphone. Then they hit stores and the value drops significantly. Nexus phones never hold value.

Also in the same boat and think it will be worth it. Went from a Nexus 4 to the HTC One and currently awaiting for my Nexus 5 to arrive tomorrow. Definitely going to miss the One's speakers. I just hope the camera quality is roughly the same or better on the Nexus. Judging from reviews, it's hit or miss. Hopefully they come out with software updates.
Ordered a One when they first came out, switched back to a Nexus 4 a couple months ago, and now I've moved onto the Nexus 5 and just sold my One yesterday. The One is still a fantastic phone, but like most of us, nothing beats vanilla Android. You won't regret it one bit.
I currently have the One and the Nexus 5. Camera experience is way better on the One. Screen is more vibrant on the One, but the n5 is equally as sharp. The sound on the One is awesome, but the n5 isn't as bad as some say. It's louder, but didn't have the refined sound. But not too bad. N5 seems faster, but could be negligible. Vanilla android is awesome, but sense has some cool features, like the camera software and IR Blaster. They both feel great on your hand. Battery, it's too soon to tell, but I think the One is slightly better, but it makes sense, same size battery, smaller screen, lesser processor. Again, negligible.
If camera is truly important, the One is better, otherwise the N5 is amazing and you won't be disappointed.
Also, unless you NEED vanilla android on a nexus, then you don't need the phone. Don't forget plain KK is coming to the One within the first 15 days, so soon.

im sure the camera will perform just fine, but the front facing camera, thats a whole new thing lol, but lucky for me i never use it! =D

Had One since launch, N5 got here today. Definitely much better software, don't even mind the finish. Expecting camera/speakers to be worse but I knew that when I ordered and had already dealt with that loss
I like sense too, but if you want stock android then the GE roms/CM etc still don't stack up to a Nexus (actually recently getting the N7 and seeing how good it was just on stock rom really made my decision for me).

Hearing early reviews saying the speaker sucks has got me worried, the camera too. The screen quality seems to be about equal, specially since it is bigger. Build wise the HTC ONE looks amazing and feels amazing in my hand. I think I will know if it was worth it when I feel it in my hand.

The N5 looks and feels very classy. Almost makes the N4 look dated.

Thats good to know! I got the Moto X as a work phone, so that's really the only reason I have one. I wouldn't have spent my own money on it to be honest, here in Canada it's too expensive and we don't get the customization options like the US. I'm stoked to get the N5, and so is my girlfriend. She's coming from a Galaxy S3, and I finally convinced her to go stock android!

I work for AT&T and I happen to own all the phones you listed. I swap between all of them, running 3 at a time (work phone, personal phone, and one on a spare line that I got before getting the job). My current lineup is the Galaxy S4, note 3, and LG G2 I literally just gave my wife my HTC one last week. With the exception of the S4 and Moto X, all these phones are great in theiir own right . You could make an argument for any of of them. But I have to say, it makes me laugh to see the S4 and Moto X in the same sentence as the other phones you listed. The Note 3, HTC One, and Nexus 5 are in their own class. The LG G2 is alright, but you have to change some settings to subdue that horrible UI lag. Moto X and S4 are more hype and marketing than deliverance. Actually, I was extremely excited for the Moto X and begged my boss to let me have one of the stores 2 models. Unfortunately the battery life killed the experience for me. I had higher expectations for a device low on specs but was supposed to be "refined". Honestly, I'm feel like the Nexus 5 is almost like the Moto X rehashed and done better.
To anyone having second thoughts, coming from the one, don't. The one may be the best phone I ever owned. The fact that it's still amount the best almost 8 months later and after the fall lineup release is proof of that. But I went With the Nexus because it has a longer end of life, lighter, and just a hair faster. (Though my Note 3 and Galaxy gears watch is fun too, but I only have it for another 2 weeks until I have to give it back). Don't pay too much attention to people freaking out. It's all in what we want out of our phones.
It's 100% completely worth it. This phone is amazing and I don't thing anybody coming from any phone will be disappointed. Now with that begin said I do miss 2 things which are the HTC One speakers and the IR blaster. But there is so many better aspects to this phone that I'm willing to overlook those two things happily.

I'm having a hard time choosing my next phone. I currently have a Nexus 4 and have had it since Spring 2013. I love the development community and speed of nexus devices (relative to my last phone, the GS3, which has horrible touchwiz and was very laggy). Coupled with my Nexus 4 is the Galaxy Note 8 tablet which I use for entertainment consumption and school.
You'd think I would just advance onto the Nexus 5 because of my love for Nexus and stock android but I was thinking that maybe I should just sell my Nexus 4 and GN 8 for a Note 3. It could double as my tablet and phone plus the battery life is pretty good although I can live with the battery on nexus phones.
I'm going to be upgrading either way as the Nexus 4 has run its course for me (still a fantastic phone IMO, but I like to have the latest and greatest). Kit Kat is awesome too, been running it for about a week now.
Now I ask the people with actual experience with the Nexus 5 for their opinion; should I get this phone over staying with the Nexus 4 or getting the Galaxy Note 3? Does it really live up to the hype? Thanks in advance.

If they were the same price, the Note 3 would win every time for me.
But since that's not true, and you're in the Nexus 5 section, go for that.
Nexus 5 would be smoother, faster, more compact and will get updates way earlier. Also it looks better I guess. I almost forgot the price !
On the other side you'll have a bigger screen, a much better battery life and more gadgets...
So, the choice is up to you. Personnaly it's N5
I was in your situation but I end up going for the nexus 5. I love the note 3 for everything except the price and touch wiz I hate touch wiz lol

The N5 is half the price. Double the price and you get a bigger screen, an extra gb of RAM, microsd, and removable battery.
If you more so just use your phone like a normal human then get the N5, much smoother with not having touchwiz. If you feel like you can make use of that screen realistate then go for the Note.
I am always asking myself: "How much can I trust ${maker}" to not screw me over on updates and repairs. Those are, let's face it (bring on the hounds) the big selling points for Apple, Apple Stores everywhere to exchange your broken front screen iPhone for a new one in 30 minutes at $50 price point (with AppleCare), and new OS rollouts more or less the second everyone else has them.
Samsung has been a little behind the curve in both for me. I have a Samsung Flagship Store in Frankfurt (when I am there) and my cracked S4 elicited some laughter and an attempt at selling me a Note 3, "we sell, we don't do service here" was the response. My S4 is still waiting for 4.3, too, a now second generation deprecated OS that's been out for quite a while. Without 4.3 I am not only missing out on Android features, I am also not hopeful to see 4.4 before the S5 is being released...
I'd say go Nexus 5. It has all the things you'd want from a phone, at a very alluring price, and you can be sure that you'll be seeing 4.5 or 5.0 at the latest a month or two after the N5s/N6 saw it.
I had the original note & can't see myself ever buying a samsung phone again. Brick bug, lack of developer support (from samsung), slow & half baked updates. I loved the huge amoled screen, but it's a relief to have something a bit smaller now to be honest. I only managed to cope with TW for a few weeks before switching to aosp. The 3rd party s pen apps are pretty good but you lose some functionality without TW.
Came from a nexus & would only settle for a nexus again now.
The Note 3 has a larger screen and MUCH better battery life. The N5 has much better software. But if you get a Note 3 with an unlocked bootloader then you'll probably have access to stable AOSP ROMs which would make it better than the N5.
This is a hard decision, thanks for the advice guys, probably leaning towards the Nexus 5.

With shipping, the 32gb comes to $460 CAD. I currently have a N4 16gb that can be sold for $250 I'm guessing.
Since I've been running Rastakat 4.4 on the N4 with ART enabled, it feels really smooth and the battery life also seems improved - almost as much as the N5 battery life estimates.
I do love a nice screen and wouldn't mind the extra pixels on the N5 and having a touch thinner device.
Those who went from N4 to N5, was it worth it? Am I alone in this?

i actually like the form factor of N4 more, every time i pick up my white nexus 5 i feel like its going to slip out of my hand, i am not sure if the black version is the same. ordered some protective case to solve the slippery problem. other than that i thnk N5 is better than N4 in every other category.
32GB Black here. Soft, matte finish is excellent on the black and feels better in the hand. Smaller bezels and slightly wider in physical size makes the screen area seem significantly larger than the One but overall physical size of the N5 is only marginally larger than the one.
Went from N4 to HTC One to N5 and would not go back. N5 is a significant improvement IMO in every category other than speakers as nothing else comes close to the One with the speakers on the front.

HTC One - 5.41 x 2.69 x 0.37 inches @ 143g - 4.7" screen
N4 - 5.27 x 2.70 x 0.36 inches @ 139g - 4.7" screen
I would say the black N5 is the one to get if you want to go naked with your phone. I've had a chance to check out both. I have my white one in a Spigen Ultra Hybrid case. Naked it's extremely slippery. I wish they would have at least put the grip coating from the black one on the sides of the white. Instead it's just a gloss black paint.
The N5 is totally worth it if you can get one without defects. I was lucky enough to only get a minor power button rattle, which is gone now that I have a case on my phone. I agree the phone is expensive fully-loaded but if you think about it long term, it's more future proof than buying anything else right now because you don't need to depend on carrier updates. Instead you have a device with one of the strongest dev communities out there. But you already know that because you have the N4.
Most people I talk to say it's totally worth it. Just navigate around the amazingly fast interface and do a speed test with LTE and you'll feel great.
You're in a nexus 5 forum, of course everyone will tell you to get it

My 16gb nexus 5 is the best buy I've made lucky to get it last Sunday Sim free what can I say I was going for and had just got a note 3 I've sent that back and I'm happy I did the n5 is a beast and will get better imo .

The nexus 5 is like no other device I have ever owned. It is an absolute beast of a phone and you won't regret getting it at all. of course IMO. Even underclocked to 1.5 using franco kernel on stock rom, I can not get this phone to lag.

The beauty is in the eye of beholder. The N5 is worth $200 extra to me, how excited you will be to receive one I have no idea. If you're having these doubts maybe you'd be better off with the N4 if you like it (I, for one, hated the back glass which made the phone slide off my QI chargers).
I came from an N4 and I have to say that it's not much of a jump. I've actually thought about selling it TBH (I go through a lot of phones because I'm a bit picky).
The camera is absolute garbage (can't focus for ****), it takes ok pictures I guess (when it focuses) and the battery life is crazy unpredictable.
The phone is crazy fast and fluid but I never felt like the N4 was slow. The phone looks cool but coming from an N4, you probably won't be blown away. I haven't been, maybe I'm bias IDK....YMMV.
I sent mine back today. I still don't regret my decision. I'm back on my S4 for now.

love it. it feels a lot better then the S4 that I had previously. a lot smoother too. this is my first nexus device though so I have no idea how the others were like
I must be the oddball one who is contemplating on returning my 16GB Black Nexus 5 for a 32GB White Nexus 5. The matte finish feels great but it attracts fingerprints like crazy when held. Also I have this fear that the finish will wear out exposing the plastic underneath. But having a larger capacity phone would be nice.
Just curious to see how the nexus 5 has done now that it's been out for awhile. I bought a moto x a while back and it's nice and all but I've got the itch to get something else and is hard to pass up the value of the nexus 5. I owned the nexus 4 prior to the x and I loved it (also loved the amount of Dev support). So I guess as the title asks... Would you buy it all over again? Any problems you've encountered in the time you've spent with the device? I want to ask about battery life but I know that's pretty subjective and also completely user dependent so I guess that's only a major concern if anyone has seen drastic problems.

The customisability and knowing that I get updates before 99.99% of the rest of the world always makes me feel good .
I love how stock everything is compared to Samsung's "crapwiz".
Battery life is amazing and it feels like a premium device... Behaves like one and... Is one!
Sure it comes with minor defects (all Nexus 5's do), but the only regret I have is not buying the 32GB version.
I miss having expandable storage, just because I like having space (have never needed to make space... Never will either , just a weird need of mine).
Android is the future... Open-Source = Endless possibilities.
I'll never want anything else!
Do you mind elaborating on the minor defects? Its good to hear someone isn't unhappy about the battery life.
The battery life is the biggest complaint for me, seems way Underpowered

I sold mine, got an S5, and now I have a nexus 5 again.
Worth it because I got it in one of those eBay deals at $380 32gb, also the first one had loose volume buttons and this one is perfect.
10/10 would buy again and again.

I'd definitely purchase the N5 again. Usually I go from phone to phone but the N5 is the first phone that I've kept for so long. I've owned this phone since February and to me that's a long time to own a phone compared to what I usually do (buy/trade for every phone that comes out).
With this phone I haven't felt jealous of my girlfriends Galaxy S5 or of the G3, or even the M8. When I had the N4 I felt a bit like I was missing something but the N5 definitely does the job.

The m8 is definitely a premium phone at a premium price and I would of definitely jumped at it but decided not to for 2 reasons. I don't understand the 4 megapixel rear and 5 megapixel front shooter concept. I also dislike how tall the phone is. I think the bezels could of been a bit more slim but whatever.

Well, "megapixels" just specifies the amount of pixels in the taken pictures, doesn't necessarily define the actual quality. My Xperia Arc S (released 2011 lol) has an 8mp camera and it obviously takes worse pictures than my Nexus 5. I played around with an M8 before and the picture quality is actually pretty good.
If I could go back in time and buy one again I would. I wouldn't buy another one now though

Is this purely because its not "technically" up to date hardware-wise anymore, or because of a problem/experience with the device? Too close to the release of another nexus device perhaps?

Lol sorry, just wanted to be clear... Its age somewhat makes me want to move onto something else. Some other the new CPUs "seem" to have better power management in a lower power state. Plus the M8s build / feel-in-hand-quality are reeeeaaally tempting but of course the price reflects that. Buying off-contract makes that hard to stomach. The update cycle seems like a toss up- HTC seems to be better lately about updates and the nexus 5 is quite a ways into its 18mo update life cycle.
I would definitely buy it all over again. You can do pretty much anything you want with the phone; Unlocking the bootloader or rooting the phone is the easiest process compared to every other phone I've had. I've had an HTC Wildfire S (not great but it was the first device I rooted .. pita), an iPhone (which wasn't so bad, but it lacked the customization i wanted), a Galaxy S4 (a great phone if you can put up with Touchwiz and slow updates and etc. Of course you can get the Dev edition if you feel like paying an extra 300-400 dollars for a better battery and a removable sd card compared to the Nexus 5, which isn't worth it), a Moto X (no complaints other than it felt too small), and now a Nexus 5 (best phone ever).
To be completely honest, I would buy it three times over just because I don't like having what everyone else has. Everyone I see with a smartphone either has an iPhone or a Galaxy. I've never really had anyone ask me about my phone, but I've never seen anyone else in my area with a Nexus 5. I'm sure someone has one, but I've not seen one yet
EDIT: Oh yeah and getting the updates first with no bs. Of course that doesn't really matter to me because I run Paranoid Android, but just the fact that we get that is awesome.
Yeah the updates are the icing on the cake. Ease of use (as far as gaining root) is also a REALLY big deal for me. Took me FOREVER to finally build up the courage to root my nexus 4 when I had it. Im not your average end user, but I'm not the MOST tech savvy person on the planet that's for sure. The process is so simple to me now but I have nothing to compare it to (Samsung HTC or other devices)
I'm not quite sure. The HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5 each have their draws to me...

My biggest complaint about the phone is the audio quality... The speaker is actually not terrible but the headphone output is very poor. Even my old Galaxy Nexus sounds better with my headphones. If I were buying it today, I'd probably get the M8. But the lack of an easy root would be a pain, primarily for tethering.

I am very aware of what megapixels bring to the table, but what happens when you want to blow up that tiny 4 megapixel picture and print it on a larger scale for display?
HTC downgraded the pixels because they claimed most people only take pics to upload to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. I believe they are right about what majority use the camera for but what about those like myself that require higher resolution?
