I've never been much into photography so I don't know much about camera settings. I was just wonder what do you guys find the best way to get the best pics possible on this phone. I take a lot of pics of my kids and have been missing around with setting in the menu. But what is optimal the scene modes or hdr or setting iso and auto contact???

Really depends on the situation but for pics of people I use the face finder obviously rapid shot is nice its a lot of situational really

Honestly, I'd put/leave everything on auto and only mess with scene mode depending on what and where you're shooting.

Compared to an serious camera, the S3's abilities are severely limited. But... compared to most other phones, it's about the best there is. In the end, though, it's still a camera. SLR, DSLR, point and shoot, 1981 Kodak Disk Camera... they all have the same basic principles of operation. You will do yourself a huge favor by learning the fundamentals of photography. There's lots of free information on the net... website tutorials, YouTube videos, etc. And if you're really serious, I highly recommend the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Not all will apply to a camera phone, but if you read it through... maybe twice... you'll be in a much better position to make the most out of your phone's camera.
And composition is at least as important as anything else. Look up the "rule of thirds" and "rule of thirds power points" and see some examples of them in use. Spend an extra moment making sure there aren't distractions in the shot. A cluttered background unwanted people, etc. Look closely at the works of professional photographers. You can instinctively spot a great picture, now work on analyzing WHY it's good and how you can do it yourself.
...geez, I could go on for hours here, but you get the idea.
My words of wisdom are only use a flash if you ABSOLUTELY need to. Since you can't bounce like a dslr it is gonna turn everyone into ghosts and an under exposed background.
Sent from my Galaxy S III
Flash PROTIP: Reduce shadows by taping a small piece of kleenex over the flash. Be careful not to cover the camera lens. This will serve to diffuse the bright flash.
Is it a good idea to keep auto contrast on or off?

Wow never knew about the rule of thirds. read about it and looked at some pics makes too much sense. I'll definitely be keeping guide on now in the camera.

GS3's camera is better than most smart phone, but its still not a canon or nikon. Not much options in terms of adjustments. I still find auto works best; then adjust in Photoshop if necessary.
A good start for photography basics:

The flash is definitely harsh. I find that the Anti-Shake works decently, and I've been leaving Auto contrast on, especially in low light or flash conditions. Experiment a little bit. Ultimately it's only an 8 megapixel cell phone camera with a microscopic sensor - don't expect too much from it. Like was mentioned above, focus on your composition, and try to make the most of the light naturally available in the scene.

Hello Everyone!
I have recently been researching into the "camera" criteria of smartphones. And I found that there are pretty awesome smartphones with great cameras out there.
So, I just thought I'd make a list about them. And of course, this is my list, your thoughts on this issue might vary.
Number 5: It's the HTC One. It's supposed to be the best android smartphone out there, and it really is! The camera is awesome too! The UI is pretty basic and simple and it has some good color saturation.
Number 4: The Apple iPhone 5s. People say that...

Not to say you're wrong or it's a bad camera, but I have such an issue with people qualifying a camera's quality by silly things like megapixels. Just because it's a high number doesn't make the camera "great." And that whole Zeiss lens thing, I just can't get behind that marketing gimmick. It's like the whole 4k thing going on or "IMAX" theaters. They cheat the qualifications just so they can advertise that they're special. If you're buying phone for an excellent camera and really want Zeiss glass or huge resolutions/megapixels, get a real camera.
Please don't use xda to drive traffic to your blog/website!
Thanks!
Just bought my 1st Windows phone to test out. Is this still a good phone? I would love your thoughts.
Just bought this phone as well to see what all the noise is about the camera.
I tested it against my nexus 5 and the zoom was incredible shot out of 20th floor window, but I have not taken it anywhere yet to take real photos.
I would like to hears other thoughts as well.
I think we are the only 2 people that own this phone and visit xda
yeah I think so as well.
Probably since MS locked it down so hard and it can not be rooted, maybe people lost interest.
This is my test phone and that time when we all wish we had a good camera device to take a quick picture(now waiting on that moment.)
Nexus 5 is still my daily driver, but I like this phone a lot.
To answer you original question, from everyone I have talked to this is still one of the best, if not the best camera/phone combination out there.
It's still the best camera phone (maybe except Nokia 808 with bigger sensor, but no stabilization). Lumix CM1 should be much better, but will cost twice more and it still isn't in sale.

I looked that up when I first got the phone. Can't remember where I found the information, but it is just the OIS element.
I'm not a camera guy so I looked up OIS element. It appears that regular cameras have the rattle as well.
OIS = Optical Image Stabilization
New one to me.
Most said that if the rattle stops then you are in trouble.
Long story short Rattle is good.
Guys visit the site for detailed information Windows Phones and anything related to Lumia/ Win Phone
http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/
I've bought and tried almost every smartphone with a good camera.
Nokia Lumia 1020 takes the best photos of all till now...
The pureview technology is unique...
As a previous owner of lumia 1020. My thoughts and info.
Currently I am a note 3 user. Lumia 1020 was for me a very good phone. My only issue is that earpiece volume was low (Small ear problem due to my work, but I can say iphone and now note 3 are double lowder) . At first it was perfect. After the 8 update it went lower. Restored to the initial version but no improvement. Kept and updated to 8.1........ still the same. Contacted microsoft but no answer given (dah). If the volume was higher I would never have sold it. I was an iphone user, android, lumia, iphone and now again on android. These are my conclusion on personal experience.
1. Camera is far far superior than other phones. YES. By far. I dont know about the iphone 6.
2. Rattle noise of the camera is a little bit disturbing but as I have read its on the stabilisation of the camera.
3. Windows os is FASTER than any other (Yes I have previously rooted my HTC m7 and used custom roms)
4. Support from microsoft sucks (sorry but they have not answered any of my emails with a solution)
5. To take great photos you have to study and learn the camera 's features.
Do I miss my Lumia? YES
Will I ever buy a Lumia? YES ( thinking of the 930 but I saw many issues with that as well.) In a year or two if they take their jobs seriously they can make unbelievable smartphones.
Hope I have helped someone.
stunning camera. Way above anything else.
I've been using the phone since June 2014. It has a STUNNING camera and I've been a serious DLSR photographer since 2004.
Its not all things to all men but low light and detail from the large 41.3-megapixel BSI CMOS image sensor are v good. Its a FX - full frame camera in a phone without the add-on lenses. FX on a DLSR is £1000 entry level.
I perhaps wish I had more control over the photographic process. I'd love a variable Neutral Density Filter. I'd love a simple HDR app.
I'd like better 3rd party apps. I think this camera\Nokia 1020 will ultimately fail in the market as it is locked down by MS and Nokia. Such a shame....and self defeating. Camera 10/10.
I tried to debrand it when I got it. Failed.
No WP equivalent Cyanogen Mod or simple 8.1 for me then.

Especially since no other can do 4x FHD zoom without serious quality drop
Mine glass broke while moving and I bought galaxy s4+ while waiting repairs and I decided to keep it, since the operating system gives so much leeway...
Only problem is that now I have to use burst to get even one good image even in good light
I upgraded to Nexus 6 but always carry the 1020 for pictures can't beat the camera

Hi there guys. Im not new in the forums but new to this threads. I used to have Motorolas and still love them, awesome devices and still think the best out there, at least in Android side, but my GF took mine for a game and gave me this Lumia 1020. which to be honest i sold her the idea of getting it in the first place.
So far ive been investigating as many people talks too much BS about 41 megapixels not being important bla bla...
My findings so far:
The phone specs are medium to high compared to pocket cameras. The quality is actually amazing, a few small details as with anything but i think its just perfect to avoid buying a camera. I just dont like that the zoom is not that much, to be honest its great when im at an stadium and i take this pictures that are simply amazing compared to what any other smartphone can take, but if i want to zoom then im the one with the crappiest zoom. But i bought this Lensung zoom 12X and im going to check it once it arrives in a couple of weeks or more.
There are some cool apps out there for this camera so the biggest problem is to know which one fits you better, thats why i have about 8 apps installed. Ive been playing with some and they all fit somehow. Im an amateur photo lover beginner in the lowest level but damn this camera makes me look at least as a good enough camera man he he he.
Issues so far: i hate the phone overheats but i know it is normal.
No real quality lenses out there (im going to test the one i mentioned but not sure its gonna be good enough yet)
Possible advantages:
Ive seen people working on creating cases that fit real lenses, professional ones, waiting for the results and possibilities to buy them.
And one last thing, in the party a couple weeks ago every single person started taking pictures... i was the one taking pictures at the end of the party as there was no match for this camera-phone, simply they all surrendered to its quality pictures, iPhone lovers, Android lovers, Samsung lovers, all of them. So yes, this phone is still the best camera phone you will find!
Are we reaching a stage with our mobile phones where they have become cameras with a phone attached?

Sorry I poorly wrote my post. What I mean is, is the main focus on today's mobiles centered around the camera. I know any DSLR will produce better picture quality. Its just that so much is made of the cameras in today's mobile phones? They appear number one priority when making a mobile phone choice?
Sorry about the confusion.

I agree it's an important decision. It's not my main one though but it's high on the list. If you think about it, people spend a lot of time capturing pictures for facebook, instagram, etc. and you want to have a good camera but not have to carry a dedicated camera everywhere you go. I like to take pictures a lot and sometimes for those surprise moments (dogs doing something funny) I just don't have the ability to grab my bulky DSLR and take pictures.
thing is I want these pictures to look good later, if you just want the pictures for social media it only matters so much because the compression kills quality. I hate uploading pictures from my DSLR to facebook, feels like taking a ferrari and taking a hammer to it. Ruins the picture that much to me.
smart phones are social media driven, more people spend time on FB, Twitter and snap chat then they do making calls and texting and that's what these manufactures focus on when they build the phones.
Been using my devices many years for Internet activity 90%! Use my my laptop less and less...
I barely use the camera it's an afterthought to me, speed and power are my main focus points.

I seldom if ever use the camera. I do accept though that I am the vast minority on that point. It was just a passing thought how many reviewers take the camera so seriously yet seldom to never mention signal strength.
I live way out in the country so need a mobile that pulls that reception in. The best where the old Nokia. Worst I have owned in that respect have been HTC though we now never see that brand in this country. Sony are good, Sony also produce some of the most agreeable sound via headphones. They should they more or less pioneered the 'mobile sound'.
The S8+ also pleases with a decent sound reproduction via head phones. The screen is top quality also. Its a very accomplished mobile device to own. I ponder what comes next and where the ceiling for such technology lies and in what direction?

Sir - you have 15 days from the date of receipt of my phone (business days) to make that much-touted camera work like it should. Otherwise, I, like the rest of my early-adopter brethren, will be RMA'ing these phones in record numbers. You have been warned.
UPDATE: I have asked for and received an RMA box (headed my way). The only reason wasn't the camera, but it was the major one. The B&W camera alone is pretty awesome. If I felt I could trust Essential to make fixing the camera a top priority, I'd probably keep it and wait, but after careful consideration, I can always get 100% of my dough back now, and if I see they have made the camera function to the flagship level, I will re-buy at a later time. I want to love it just like everyone else... but $749 out of pocket sitting in a box waiting... not my style.

I can't believe people make their phone purchase decisions solely on camera performance and shipping time. It's a daily use device that you'll own for at least a year. You should look at the bigger picture. Case in point is the phone camera. Its not like people are post-processing RAW images at home. They just want a colorful, saturated image that "pops".

Exactly. Some are cancelling because they didn't get the FedEx tracking today. LOL!
I have the Sony XA that uses the same sensor as the PH-1 so the photo quality to me is good enough for quick shots. Having the monochrome to improve the photo is a bonus. For anything else, I use my pocketable Sony RX-100 M4 anyway or DSLR for more serious photography.

My problem is not the shipping delay, but the pure lack of any communication.
Now, the camera is not and has never been a deal breaker for me.
I have a Samsung NX300 as my throw around. I keep it in the backpack or in the car.
For serious stuff I have a Canon 7D and a 7D MkII.
The camera on a phone is a last resort and mostly for product pics for things I don't want to forget.

I passed on the phone specifically for this reason. I have a great camera on my Pixel. But we recently had a baby and there's no way I'm getting a kinda crappy camera on my phone while she's growing up. Sure, a good DSLR will outperform even my Pixel but as the old photographer's saying goes, "The best camera is the one you have on you." And that means my phone the far majority of the time.
Before our little one, I didn't care at all about camera quality. But now it's incredibly important, if not one of the most important things.
I'm not trying to change your mind or convince you of anything. Just giving you some perspective on why some, or at least I, will be passing on this phone. I can either get another great phone with a great camera (or keep my Pixel) so I can photograph more precious moments with my daughter, or I can get a phone with a mediocre camera and miss some of those precious moments. That's worth passing on this phone to me. None of the other issues with this phone are a problem for me, but the camera is a deal breaker.
Looks to me like Andy Android has been paying attention. According to Android Central, Essential has dropped THREE updates focused on camera refinements and the pictures they posted today look a damn shot better than they did at first. Clearly. there is a ton of work they can do to improve the post processing through software, so I'm going to give it a long, strong chance to make the cut before I have to return it. I'm a black and white buff since I was in HS, and I really wanted the P10 just because of the dedicated sensor... but I also wanted premium materials... so if this phone can aesthetically hit the right notes and take damn good pics while doing it, I may be selling my full on Sammy Gear Collection and going with this one as daily driver. I'm hopeful now at least. Been waiting for a clean beast like this for ages. Am I climbing back on the bandwagon?
You don't speak for everyone, I will infact be keeping this phone. The camera is the very last thing I consider when purchasing a phone.
It's called a personal note for a reason - I wouldn't choose to speak for you if you paid me. Maybe you can get one of those cameraless flip phones sounds like that's more your speed.
