It supports it, but Verizon won't activate it because it's not an authorized device. I suppose if you got lucky at a Verizon store or the technical support line you might get lucky and have it activated, IF they have the ability to override the system and get the phone activated. Which I'm not sure they do, but it's worth a shot I guess.

Hey guys I know that it's common knowledge that the glorious N5 wont work on Verizon's network but with the release of the N6 and the hush from Google about a new n5 being release with Verizon capability I had to do some investigating. Why would google shoot themselves in the foot by only producing a device that the average smartphone user would not want to purchase (besides people who like phablets of course)? I figured that there might be a slim chance that google might have something up their sleeves with the n5 that wasn't shown in the the pre-halloween release of the nexus 6, 9, and player. As you know, the main reasons why the current n5 does not support Verizon is because of its lack of support for LTE band 13, Verizon's main data band and apparently you cannot active the device being that it's not on an approved list (don't take my word on that, I haven't tried it or anything). At first, I figured that maybe Google had struck up some deal with LG to reproduce the device for capability to handle that band. As time goes on, that looks less and less like a possibility, however, I did happen to come across this, which significantly increases the chance of the N5 working on Verizon's network.

Verizon's rollout of XLTE will allow use of of LTE Band 4, a band that the nexus 5 does support for major city areas (not ideal of course but still something interesting to look at). Be that as it may I am interested in your opinion of whether you think that this will change things and perhaps Verizon might cave in to allowing the device on their network. Again I know that this might be a longshot but I'm curious about all things Google.

Since I don't see 1700 MHz does that mean it won't support T-Mobile's HSPA+ speeds?
I'm currently on an iPhone 4 on T-Mobile and not having that band makes it kind of useless half the time. I'm not sure if my area has good LTE coverage some I don't know anyone with an T-Mobile capable LTE device.

I was getting ready to ask the same question, but I believe you'll need to have 1700 to play with HSPA+. That's what was true for my HTC One at least -- hence the reason I had to cancel my developer edition HTC One order.
Although I didn't give you a full answer, I hope this helps a bit.
If the phone doesn't support AWS HSPA+ then this is bad news for Canadians on Wind or Mobilicity. LTE support doesn't help when your provider has no LTE network.
Would tmobile really sell this phone if it didn't work with their HSPA+?

They're using channels, not frequencies. It has the channels T-Mobile uses for AWS HSPA+.

FYI - HSPA = WCDMA, not GSM, so looking at the GSM frequencies isn't going to tell you anything for HSPA+ connectivity.

WCDMA Bands 4 and 2 is T-Mobiles HSPA+ so this supports all bands for T-Mo and then some!
It even supports Sprint.
It wouldn't be the first time that band / frequency jargon confused the end user, even when the end user hopes to be relatively technically apt.
But I think the answers given are correct for the reasons given.
It's all the more confusing because different manufacturers advertise bands/frequencies in different ways - for example, look at how Apple advertises their band/frequency support vs how Google/LG does.

Switch providers...why anyone would want to go without LTE just baffles me. Especially on the newer phones that are so powerful...makes no sense?

My guess is that it doesn't support LTE because they are using Band IV 1700/2100Mhz, which N5 doesn't support.

yes it will support T-Mobile's LTE. As you stated Tmo uses band 4, the N5 has band 4 support.
From my understanding the Nexus 5 does support HSPA+.
My question/concern would be, does it support HSPA+ 42Mbps or 21Mbps?
I only ask because of a chart I saw posted on G+ stating that the Nexus 5 supports 21Mbps HSPA+. Thanks.

Tmobile it's using lte band 4. So it should be covered.

I'm just discover xda-developers and probably it's the best website to get anything for android phones, i have a question about the new google nexus 5, i want to use it on Italy and Spain during my work trip and i don't know if i can use it on UMTS 2100mhz (used in Europe from several cell phone providers),i tried to read several website, but i still have doubt, also called the google phone number and get no answer from them, from what i saw in goggle website doesn't tell anything about UMTS, but in other website it's appears the 2100mhz on it, but before to buy it (right now i have a nexus 4)i want to be sure it's going to work over there!!

North America:

But at this point the Google operators are just Monkeys!!!!! they don't know anything (and who answer me told me is technical support... technical support my ass i can say)

Hello all. Considering a move from the current phone to this, but wanted to check this first. As I read the specs for this phone, it appears that it supports *both* CDMA and GSM at this same time, meaning it truly is carrier agnostic. If this is the case, it would then outweigh the major drawback of not having expandable storage. (Owncloud is being planned to take care of that shortcoming).
So, can someone verify bandwise if this is the case? Looking to jump from AT&T to T-Mobile if this turns out to be the case. (Looking for the inclusion of Cdma as then Sprint and Verizon become available)

The Nexus 5 will work on T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint in the USA. Verizon is not supported.

You will not get LTE from either ATT or Tmobile as the Tmobile uses Band 4 AWS for LTE while ATT mostly uses Band 17 700B+C, Band 2 PCS A-F, Band 4 AWS, and some Band 5 CL850.
WCDMA HSPA+ will be fine. T-mobile runs HSPA+21 while ATT runs HSPA+14.4. Both have a day to day prepaid service that you can use to test them out before you choose.
Sorry, I was wrong. Both AT&T and T-Mobile use Band 4 ( and AT&T has band 17) for LTE. I was mistakenly considering only the network frequencies, which was wrong when considering LTE. You won't get LTE on either carrier with the D821, and can only get DC-HSDPA with T-Mobile.

I have some friends that went through this when they came to visit the States (also with D821). T-Mobile is your best option. You won't get 4g, but you will get fairly good H+.

Yes I can confirm it totally works !!!
Not for the 4G of course but for me it's fast enough with the 3G.
But maybe you'll have to make your APN manually like I had to do.

As the topic states, is there any way to use the Nexus 5 (D821) on the Sprint Network in the US?
I had a broken phone so I bought this nexus 5 thinking that regardless of the difference between the two, the radio should still be compatible with it since it is supposed to be a world phone. I just recently realized that the radios are different (apparently the D821 isn't allowed to use CDMA bands).
I know there is the Nexus Field Test APK, but I don't think that would enable those CDMA bands.
I won't be back in the states for another three months, and at that point, my service contract would end with Sprint, so I could either buy a new phone, or go to another carrier (maybe T-mobile, or any pre-paid provider) and shop around.
But, as for my question, is there any way to get the D821 to use the Sprint Network?

I know of that forum link at the bottom of the post, but, as far as I know, CDMA is required before the use of LTE on Sprint.

The D821 lacks CDMA support completely.
As far as I know, Sprint uses bands 25, 26 and 41 for LTE so the D821 has no way to get LTE either.
