[Q] Snapdragon Voice Activation and Google Now? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the Moto X has touchless controls and the Nexus 5 doesn't. This is supposedly because the Moto X has a low power natural language processing core that doesn't burn through the battery, always listening for the users to speak the magical incantation to activate Google now.
Well, the Nexus 5 has the Snapdragon 800 series CPU which has Snapdragon Voice Activation built in. Which Qualcomm describes as a low power core listening for an activation phrase.
Is this even a pipe dream for a developer to get Snapdragon Voice Activation to activate Google now? Because I would definitely be hitting that donate button pretty hard if saw some devs working on this and I am pretty sure plenty of other people on this forum and nearly all of my other personalities would also be extremely interested.

Why don't someone just install the touch less apk from moto x? It is just an app, and the chip set in the n5 supports it.

Hi

HI
I don't think you need to make a new thread for this question. As I said on your last thread:
Python. said:
I think there are a few but it is often better to search websites individually. The search engines normally miss sales and you will find a cheaper price by searching the main sites listed above.

You can use Google Product Search, via ticking the 'Used Items' box, and Google itself. Just search for the phone name and words 'sale' and 'used' and limit the result to the last week or month. These will give you the most results and you are less likely to miss sales. But, I would suggest you search individual sites.

HotUKDeals is, also, good. Meanwhile, this tool searches most product search engines: MegaShopBot.

Galaxy S4 direct sunlight visibility comparison

EDIT: chrisngrod was nice enough to do a redo of the sunlight comparison test for us. You can scroll down to post #10 to see the updated video.
You didn't include the rest of the post. The SGS4 was on manual brightness which limits the display's output. This is what the poster of that video added...
chrisngrod said:
^This [pointing out the impact of manual brightness] is the kind of productive information that allows for better videos.
I will rerun it as I did verify that the GS4 is dimmer under the conditions explained above.
My Note 2 is running CM10.1 so this could be causing different results. It does not behave in the same manner. Auto brightness = 100% manual brightness.

Yep thanks to @BarryH_GEG for pointing this out.
Only time will tell during the reshoot. My daily is the Optimus G Pro so either way that will lose. I do think the HTC One will edge out the GS4, but this should narrow the gap.
All of these phones are great. One just has to choose what is important to them.

Thanks for the info/link Barry
I don't frequent the HTC One forum so I didn't see that thread. I was simply perusing around youtube for GS4 videos and saw the one above.
I also saw this one as well that I figured I'd share:

I would imagine it is okay because they are posted in different sections. The way XDA is setup, I don't think there is as much cross board traffic as with other sites.
This might give us the opportunity to hear from pro GS4 consumers vs pro One consumers.

Since it's your video and time/effort put into it, I'd be happy to tell the mods to take this thread down so you can post a similar one later and receive the thanks that you should get for helping the community. Just let me know if that's what you'd like :good:
Also thanks for posting the above video as well as re-doing it with auto-brightness on.
Your post is fine .
When it is redone you'd probably want to post that in the OP though.

I subscribed to your HTC One thread and favorite'd your youtube video so I'll make sure to update the OP accordingly once the video is re-run.
Thanks. I'll be running out the door at 5 while there is still light.

LG Optimus G Pro still gets the short end of the stick here. The video didn't start playing. It is my daily use phone so please don't be outraged and say I'm trying to jack the results.
I love the phone, but the screen's sensitivity falls short IMO when compared to the other ones here. Not a deal breaker. Just takes a little bit more getting use to.

Google now type app question

hi guys quick question. I have android ICS 4.0.4 which unfortunately can't use the swipe cards that Google now provides even with xda hacking.
I'm looking for an app that's similar to the cards Google uses ie weather, calendar, location if possible. I have metro which is very cool but no where like Google now.
Is there any app that is similar in api from the top menu with swipe.
Any recommendations welcome as from my searching the threads on xda Google now is not possible on rooted 4.0.4 due to Google restrictions - there not much fun are they lol.

A great app is utter! which can be found on the Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brandall.nutter

[Q] anandtech review?

So does anyone know if / when the anandtech review of the nexus 5 will be released? Can't find it.
And why exactly would you need it? I think there is already every information imaginable on the forums or in other reviews.

No, I've just been wondering that if you were looking for something specific we could provide it
If you look at Brian Klug's twitter feed (@nerdtalker), you'll notice that he's both working on it and sick of people asking about it. At one point he made a joke about adding 300 minutes delay every time someone asks.

Great! I've been waiting for it too. :good:
People who matter listen to what Brian Klug has to say, so if there's something that needs improving and he points it out, there's a chance something will be done about it.
Edit:
Great review, as expected!

"Knock Code" from G Pro 2 on nexus 5

The new LG G Pro 2 have a nice feature called Knock Code.

I think it's very useful. Is it possible to port this feature to nexus 5? Maybe someone already working on it?

Alright, so the long version. What I wanted to point is that none of the custom kernels available supports a feature similar to the one in the OP. Apparently neither of you two have watched the video or understood what feature we are talking about, but instead jumped at the TS, implying he didn't search in advance to his question.
This is not, I repeat not, about a simple tap2wake, knock2wake, sweep2wake or whatever you want to call it. This is about tapping the screen in a user-defined pattern to wake AND UNLOCK the phone in one step. Which is quite a bit more cool than just tap2wake, so I would like to see it happen as well.

I've seen the video. The "Knock code" won't work without knock on / tap2wake / slide2wake / doubletap2 wake etc.
Surely it would be an obvious and logical step to find the feature CLOSEST to what you are looking for and move forward from there?! I've added a question mark but I have made this rhetorical by following up with an exclamation mark.
Porting the code without the "on" is pointless. No one will port this from scratch. You need to find the groundwork first and from there, so it can be developed.
edit > "please search" is not "jumping" and I have no idea what a TS is.
I give up. It's nice to see XDA still lives up to its expectations though.

I understand your concern, but I respectfully submit that it is appropriate and helpful for senior members to provide guidance with respect to the rules, customs, and best practices of the board. I assure you that even if their tone sounds curt, the mentors here are well-intentioned. Their objective: to keep the forum as lean and efficient as possible. Such efforts are necessary because many, many members fail to search before posting.
So I take it I have been reported then?
Anyway, are we finally OT-raping this thread to a point where it will be closed by some over-zealous mod, so that this great and valid feature request will starve unnoticed by real devs with skills other than "duh go search you kacknoob!", who might even accomplish something here?
Or can we let this alone now, after I said that I am done trying to be helpful here? Or as some other members might call it, "apply some logic", because it only seems logical that off-topic movie talk doesn't belong here...

I'll answer the rhetorical question, for the benefit of others who do not know - none of them do. Hence why OP's original question was, and still is, valid.
I too would like to know if anyone is working on Knock Code for the N5, as opposed to the Knock On/Knock Knock/Tap To Wake/whatever you want to call the current implementation (which does NOT support the tap pattern unlock feature).
If anyone is going to work on it then I'd happily donate because I love Knock On and Knock Code would be even more awesome.
I find that OPPO have even cooler features - screen off gestures.
youtube
We need to port this on nexus 5 somehow.
I sure would like this as well!
OP/TS/Whatever TLA you want to be called: Thank you for asking this question. Pay no attention to people who feel the need to strong-arm you for no reason other than to make them feel like they're important.
