Nexus 5 does not support tethering? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have heard that nexus 5 does not support tethering. Could anyone who has a nexus 5 at hand test it?

Isn't it more of a software than hardware feature. All of my phones have had WiFi tethering thanks to AOKP.

Teathering is a native option, and has been for quite a while... nothings changed in 4.4. Jeeeenx is right it is a software thing, so some carriers choose to disable it. Technically I'm not allowed to do it on my contract, but the carrier has no way of knowing if you do or not.

Yup its software. Every phone has had WiFi tethering, it was even built into the stock ROM.

Yes you can. You can set-up USB tethering, Bluetooth tethering, and also setup portable wi-fi hotspot

I hope so. However, i got this info from reliable source so i just want to see whether anyone has tried that or not. I am guessing google intentionally disabled it or it is not ready for kitkat?

There's usually an app for that.

The google n5/kit kat demo video from the UK (Androidizen? or similar ) , showed the same tethering/hotspot feature we have on our google Gnex and n4.

5Ghz Wifi Tethering?
Question, has anyone tried Wifi tethering on the 5GHz band? In 4.3 and lower tethering only worked on 2.4Ghz no matter what I set the phone to use... just wondering if this changed at all in KitKat?

Dropping data on call.

I know you will drop 3g data on a call. That I completely understand. But this is the first device I've used that is dropping my lte data during a call. I'm not sure if this is a rom issue or a modem issue.
I am on sprint, and not sure if this is an isolated issue for sprint customers or across the board.
Another issue I would like to see resolved is patching native tethering. I'm currently stuck using WiFi tether app in ad-hoc mode. Which unfortunately my nexus 7 can't attach to.
In case you're wondering I'm running slim kat currently. I've tried cm and stock before rooting and all formats have dropped LTE on call.
Probably because there is no voice over LTE. Same happens on Rogers too.

But I've always had voice over LTE on Sprint. Just not with this phone. Galaxy nexus, and HTC one never had that issue.
If it's something I have to live with, that's fine. I just would like to see this feature implemented if possible.
maybe its the way the radio is designed for this phone?
thats my only guess.

Nope, not going to happen. It requires a very specific setup with the radios that results in poor battery life. Sprint does not run with voice over LTE, it's simply running calls as normal and keeping LTE active at the same time.
In addition, large portions of Sprint's network outright do not support this functionality anyway.

Is this possible on nexus 5 on T-Mobile?

I know the nexus 5 on T-Mobile does not have the WiFi calling feature. I don't know if that is due to lack of hardware or software. With that, I was wondering if it was possible being rooted by means of a ROM or kernel or some sort of mod?
If so, could you kindly point me in the direction of it?
Thank you,
Whiteice

There's no mod for this at the moment. Not sure what the restriction is but I've seen it asked many times here. You may learn the restriction if you search

there's alot of stuff that tmobile has to add to the phone for it to be able to work. some framework, APIs, and special RIL.
its not possible since none of this information is known.

I just purchased my N5 from T-mo last month here in the states. One of the features that sold me on it was the ability for it to do calls over wifi. I have tested it as I was in Canada and when calling my v-mail it did not recognise my caller-id so it prompted me for a password. So long story short, it should be able to call over WiFi natively.
This is just my $0.02
It can't

the nexus 5 doesnt have the software nor, very importantly, tmobiles framework for wifi calling to work. the great thing about owning nexus devices is that carriers do not have access to them to install all their carrier crap on them, wifi calling being one of those. its not as simple as just installing an app to have it work. it needs tmobiles framework built into it as well.

Does WiFi calling work on T-Mobile?

Anyone know if WiFi calling forks on t-mobile? I read that the nexus 6 works because Google tmo and qualcom ALL support it, so what about Sammy and their new baseband chips?

Yes WiFi calling works
Just in case you wanted a second opinion...yes, it works.
WHen I had my Note 3 and S3 (not at the same time...) wifi calling was great. But my last couple phones (Nexus 6, LG G3, HTC M8), it quality has been poor. My internet speeds have actually increased over that time too. I dont' use it anymore. I'll give it another shot on my Note 5, but I'm not holding my breath.

Of course it works - sorry, but this seems like an odd question - from what I know, ALL TMOBILE PHOnes have wifi calling - certainlly all of the TMO Phones i have owned have it - and they were all Samsung phones -

Wi-Fi tethering?

Now that we have root will Wi-Fi tethering be obtainable? I didn't see it mention in the v10 forums as being done yet either. Maybe T-Mobile has that blocked?
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
You should try out Wifi Tether Router. It's a paid app on the app store that is pretty sweet. I have it working on the Galaxy Note 4. T-Mobile has gotten really good at blocking it but I've had more recent success with it.
If you get the app please report back to us if it worked or not!
I tried it but yes T-Mobile had gotten better at blocking. When I use it it continues to turn wifi on, even after I end the app the wifi will continue to turn on. I ran out and bought the phone AGAIN as soon as I saw it was rooted in hopes I could get tethering working. I'm returning the phone, it'll be the last carrier phone I ever buy.

I don't know if that's a T-Mobile blocking issue as much as it might just be a problem with that version of the app. You should see if previous versions work better first.
Maybe I should have. I'm going to wait for the next round of Nexus phones.

WiFi and HD Calling Improvements

Verizon’s latest update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge brings Wi-Fi and HD Calling improvements.
To check for the update, head into Settings>About phone>Software updates>Check for updates.
Before you download:
Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network, or make sure it has a strong Verizon Wireless network connection.
Ensure your battery is fully charged before starting the software update.
I saw and downloaded the update. We use WiFi calling since we live in sticks and cell signal here is week. We had noticed poor quality recently, hopefully this update helps.

We've NEVER had luck with Wi-Fi calling. We have 75 MB Comcast connection and when the phone rings, it always disconnects when I answer, or a few seconds after.
Does anyone else have this going on? We can't even use it. We've heard from others that it's a great feature, just we can't get it working.
Anyone else upgraded? How is it? Does it make a noticeable difference in volte?
Updated and the phone seems identical. WiFi calling seems hit or miss for me: it sometimes connects, and sometimes sounds all right, but no real change from before.
Can someone confirm FoxFi works on update?
Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
After dealing with so-so signal strength and ZERO wifi calling abilities with this Verizon phone, tech support is sending me a new SIM card. They said if that doesn't fix my issues, they'll send me a new phone right away.
If you're having problems, I'd suggest going the same route.

Yup.

I notice if I got both CELL and WIFI on... and my cell is weak and "jumps" to wifi calling, people say I "sound like a frog".
If I go to airplane mode and turn cell on - everything sounds crystal clear to both sides

You using Foxfi for wireless tethering I assume? Are you on the latest software version? I am thinking about unrooting and switching to that but I fear I may regret it...
