Is this possible on nexus 5 on T-Mobile? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know the nexus 5 on T-Mobile does not have the WiFi calling feature. I don't know if that is due to lack of hardware or software. With that, I was wondering if it was possible being rooted by means of a ROM or kernel or some sort of mod?
If so, could you kindly point me in the direction of it?
Thank you,
Whiteice

There's no mod for this at the moment. Not sure what the restriction is but I've seen it asked many times here. You may learn the restriction if you search

there's alot of stuff that tmobile has to add to the phone for it to be able to work. some framework, APIs, and special RIL.
its not possible since none of this information is known.

I just purchased my N5 from T-mo last month here in the states. One of the features that sold me on it was the ability for it to do calls over wifi. I have tested it as I was in Canada and when calling my v-mail it did not recognise my caller-id so it prompted me for a password. So long story short, it should be able to call over WiFi natively.
This is just my $0.02

It can't

the nexus 5 doesnt have the software nor, very importantly, tmobiles framework for wifi calling to work. the great thing about owning nexus devices is that carriers do not have access to them to install all their carrier crap on them, wifi calling being one of those. its not as simple as just installing an app to have it work. it needs tmobiles framework built into it as well.

Nexus 5 does not support tethering?

I have heard that nexus 5 does not support tethering. Could anyone who has a nexus 5 at hand test it?
Isn't it more of a software than hardware feature. All of my phones have had WiFi tethering thanks to AOKP.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Teathering is a native option, and has been for quite a while... nothings changed in 4.4. Jeeeenx is right it is a software thing, so some carriers choose to disable it. Technically I'm not allowed to do it on my contract, but the carrier has no way of knowing if you do or not.

Yup its software. Every phone has had WiFi tethering, it was even built into the stock ROM.

Yes you can. You can set-up USB tethering, Bluetooth tethering, and also setup portable wi-fi hotspot
I hope so. However, i got this info from reliable source so i just want to see whether anyone has tried that or not. I am guessing google intentionally disabled it or it is not ready for kitkat?
There's usually an app for that.

The google n5/kit kat demo video from the UK (Androidizen? or similar ) , showed the same tethering/hotspot feature we have on our google Gnex and n4.

5Ghz Wifi Tethering?
Question, has anyone tried Wifi tethering on the 5GHz band? In 4.3 and lower tethering only worked on 2.4Ghz no matter what I set the phone to use... just wondering if this changed at all in KitKat?

Dropping data on call.

I know you will drop 3g data on a call. That I completely understand. But this is the first device I've used that is dropping my lte data during a call. I'm not sure if this is a rom issue or a modem issue.
I am on sprint, and not sure if this is an isolated issue for sprint customers or across the board.
Another issue I would like to see resolved is patching native tethering. I'm currently stuck using WiFi tether app in ad-hoc mode. Which unfortunately my nexus 7 can't attach to.
In case you're wondering I'm running slim kat currently. I've tried cm and stock before rooting and all formats have dropped LTE on call.
Probably because there is no voice over LTE. Same happens on Rogers too.

But I've always had voice over LTE on Sprint. Just not with this phone. Galaxy nexus, and HTC one never had that issue.
If it's something I have to live with, that's fine. I just would like to see this feature implemented if possible.
maybe its the way the radio is designed for this phone?
thats my only guess.

Nope, not going to happen. It requires a very specific setup with the radios that results in poor battery life. Sprint does not run with voice over LTE, it's simply running calls as normal and keeping LTE active at the same time.
In addition, large portions of Sprint's network outright do not support this functionality anyway.

HD Voice on the Nexus 5 (AMR-WB)

Is there a way to enable HD Voice (WB-AMR) on the Nexus 5? For some weird reason, the Galaxy Nexus is supported by Rogers for HD Voice but not the Nexus 5.
Some people here have figured out how to enable it on the Galaxy S4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2287992
But I can't figure out how to access the service menu on the Nexus 5 on 4.4.2... Or maybe it is already enabled but I can't check it?
Anyone who can figure this out will be the star of XDA's Nexus 5 forum!

it works fine on tmobile. its obvious when its connected, and sounds wonderful. theres no service menu, its just enabled.
It works out of the box on Tmobile. As the previous guy said, it's really obvious if it works.
I'm surprised on T-Mobile's End I had a full size sim from my Nexus s cut it into a micro sim and i was surprised to see LTE on an OLD sim card also HD voice does sound amazing its like landline quality but sounds better! but when it drops to EDGE or GPRS it sounds like [email protected] but oh well i got HSPA everywhere.
HD-Voice is bounds better than landline...i've only had it work between my mom's windows phone and my N5 on tmobile...at&t sounds like crap, all the other phones sound like crap too. I hope at&t enables it soon so I can actually understand my girlfriend better.
Works out of box here on Bell. You have to be talking to other people with HD voice enabled phones. Whenever I phone my brother on his HTC One it sounds amazing..it puts land lines to shame.
I think it needs to be support also via your carrier... but I think most of the carriers have them enabled...

Not in the US. Tmobile is the only one that has it. ATT is coming this year or sometime soon.

But there must be a service menu to figure out if AMR-WB is activated or not? For example, the S4 has HD Voice capability but people have figured out how to activate it in the service menu.

Does AMR-WB only work when LTE is activated? I get frequent call drops on my Nexus 5 and some people have gotten relief when they disable LTE and switch to 3G.

It is quite bizarre that on Rogers/Fido, Canada's largest network, they say that only certain phones support HD Voice. The Galaxy Nexus is supported but the Nexus 4 and 5 or not supported! I even called and asked!

Rogers/Fido offers HD Voice but I think that they have to add support on a individual device basis. It supports the Galaxy Nexus, but not the Nexus 4 or 5!
This is why I believe that there has got to be a way to access the Service menu on the Nexus 5 and activate AMR-WB support. People can do it on the S4!

I want to know how to access the service menu to check if AMR-WB is on or not. Some test calls I've made (EE - UK) don't sound like it's working properly.

All solutions involving *#0011# and *#197328640# don't work. No idea what to do now :/
I was making some calls today, where I had LTE. The expected behaviour would be that the device switches to 3G for voice calls, but it seems to me like my N5 is using 2G. So it seems that despite being on a network which i know has working HD Voice, the Nexus 5 doesn't work. Bummer.
A lot of people claimed that HD voice is working for nexus 5. In my it did not (and my carrier supports this feature). Now, when android 5.1 released, there is an item in change log - provide support for HD voice. So no idea how this worked before, but will check it on 5.1 and hope it will work.

For me it is not working (despite carrier says it should). I am on 5.1 - same result.
I have OnePlus phone and HD Voice is working perfect - seems that it is phone or carrier issue.

Yes WiFi calling works
Just in case you wanted a second opinion...yes, it works.
WHen I had my Note 3 and S3 (not at the same time...) wifi calling was great. But my last couple phones (Nexus 6, LG G3, HTC M8), it quality has been poor. My internet speeds have actually increased over that time too. I dont' use it anymore. I'll give it another shot on my Note 5, but I'm not holding my breath.

Of course it works - sorry, but this seems like an odd question - from what I know, ALL TMOBILE PHOnes have wifi calling - certainlly all of the TMO Phones i have owned have it - and they were all Samsung phones -

HTC lying about AT&T "compatibility"

U11 does not support VoLTE on AT&T
U11 does not support WiFi-Calling on AT&T
U11 does not support Video Call on AT&T
U11 does not support Integrated Visual Voicemail on messages app like it use to on HTC One M7, M8 & M9, you need the stand alone app which is crap...
the phone works for calls data LTE works MMS haven't test yet I don't use them....

Is VoLTE band used by AT&T suppoeted by the U11 and is it available in your area?
Was Wifi Calling verified to be working on your Wifi network on other devices? If it is then could be a faulty software glitch. If not the it could be a blocked port or their service is down.
I'd contact HTC and AT&T and ask them for clarification. HTC had to do testing with AT&T and gotten the approval from them to claim compatibility.
As far Video Calling, that sounds more like a third-party app feature then HTC. I've never known HTC dialer app to support anything like that.
You might have done all of this, but your post doesn't have any thing to show investigations or troubleshooting. Just a rant post.
Help future users out by having details and things that were tried etc.

Volte was working fine on my HTC 10 video call and Wi-Fi calling is been introducedon newest devices on AT&T since galaxy note 4 edge with is couple of years old and it does support both features
Sent from my HTC U11 using XDA Labs
I had my suspicions about this as well. An HTC rep told me directly that the U11 is certified to work with AT&T's VoLTE and Wifi Calling. Of course, when they told me that, I turned it around with something along the lines of "Yeah, I know it will support it from a hardware perspective, but AT&T only allows certain approved devices to use those features. Can you say with 100% certainty that the unlocked U11 will actually be allowed to take advantages of those features?" They responded that it would... 100% I still don't believe it, though, and I have a feeling I'll be sending my U11 back within the return period.
All of the same confirmed here.. no wifi calling or VoLTE.. as well as no Band 30 support. What a pain. On AT&T that is.. works fine on TMO.

This is really really sad. I was going to buy the U11 with my Discover card's 1st year double cash back (would have covered the whole cost) that rolls into my account at the end of August... Figured S-OFF / Locked may be available by then too. But after reading about VoLTE and WiFi calling not working on AT&T, I'm having 2nd thoughts. I live in NJ so WiFi calling really isn't super important (we have amazing LTE coverage just about everywhere) but neither working?? That's really super beat man.
I also saw posts on AndroidCentral reporting the same thing, so I believe you guys that this is a real problem. Thread was titled "Where is the WiFi Calling setting?" Although one user said that VoLTE was working on the U11 / AT&T, another verified it does not. As bassoprofundo so accurately explained to the CS rep at HTC, a guy on the other forum thread also referenced how the advanced calling features on the U Ultra, although "supported" by hardware, didn't actually work on AT&T either.
At least the HTC 10 was an awesome enough phone that I don't mind continuing to use it for the next year to come. But still, I hope HTC and AT&T collaborate and get this solved... which unfortunately sounds unlikely. I really like the U11 and I haven't even seen it in person yet.
Plus ViperU is already out. I WANTS.
I'm praying that AT&T / HTC surprises us!!!

Data on LTE is different than VoLTE {Voice Over LTE} basically is VoIP but on a LTE connection don't get things messed up LTE data indeed does work just no VoLTE that means you will not be able to talk and browse at the same time with LTE speeds but 4G does the same thing just on a different speed
