Hi guys,
Since we saw Android 4.4 launch today we heard Sundar Pichai Saying "It will support devices with minimum of 512MB RAM" I think we can hope our HTC One S will be directly updated to Android 4.4. Since this "Once Flagship" device meets every requirement for Getting Kitkat treatment can anyone tell me whether our One S will be updated to Android 4.4???

No. It has been discontinued, get over it. Also One S wasn't even a flagship.
4.4 wasn't made to support older devices, it's so the low-end devices won't lag so much.

Yeah. I don't think there's any phone that will get updated with the lower requirements of KitKat.

These new "lower requirements" will pretty much just be for all phones moving forward, large and small. From this point on, all phones of any speed and power will be able to be released with the same software. But I don't see any of the major players suddenly deciding that now is a good time to dust off their old models and suddenly provide an update for it.
we WILL get kitkat, one way or another
It probably HAS a good chance since HTC announced the day after release it will roll out 4.4 kitkat over the next 90 days. It will be ported to a new rom i'm sure.

But there has been no confirmation from HTC that it wont serve us KITKAT right? And they ve even discontinued Sense5 update so being a new and affordable update i think it will make them rethink their decisions

They never gave support on 4.2+ to the One S, and never will. If you manage to convince them let me know.
I'm not trying to sound harsh but no one should get their hopes up so high and then be disappointed when there's no update.
If HTC will update the One XL to 4.4 we'll probably get a working porting of the Sense 5.5.
But we'll also get some 4.4 AOSP ROMs...thats sure...

I am still trying to figure out the logic of wanting the stock AOSP for the S4 from Samsung.
How will this be any different from running any other AOSP rom? I mean, if you check out PA GamerZ ROM, that works quite well as a daily driver. Why would we want to use this stock AOSP (with features that are quite basic)? Just to get 4.3 when it comes out? So? Some dev will port that anyways.
I mean, if someone bought the S4, wasn't it for the features? If anyone wanted stock AOSP then why not Nexus 4? Ok if hardware is the question, then really waiting for the next Nexus isn't that hard.
So can someone explain to me why?

For someone like me, it's not about running the stock AOSP on S4. It's about how it can improve the AOSP based custom roms like CM, PA, etc.
Hopefully, Samsung/Google will release proper source codes as quickly as for Nexus devices so that custom roms can run better on S4.
I've been using GS3 (i9305), mainly with CM for the last 10 months or so. It works ok as a daily driver, but not as well as it could've been, mainly because not all the necessary sources are available/released.
I tried Nexus 4 for about a couple of weeks and running CM was definately more fluid/enjoyable than on GS3.
But I couldn't really get used to not having the physical home button and lack of storage space. If GS4 Google Edition is released with exact same hardward as normal i9505, then this will be almost perfect - custom roms running as well as on Nexus devices with physical home button and MicroSD slot.

In simple terms.
Google gets to have its vanilla version of Android on a flagship device without having to subsidize the cost of designing the hardware.
Unlike Nexus devices where Google invests R&D money to make the hardware... having Samsung and HTC put a version of Stock Android on the device pretty much absolves Google of any financial liability in relation to hardware development.
Nexus devices are traditionally spartan... and Google likes it that way... but what if mobile manufacturers want to have nexus compatible device with all the bells and whistles... they will all compete on who has the most Nexus compatible device.
This will attract developers and customers that prefer the stock Google experience
Bear in mind also Google is still developing their Motorola flagship device... this has handset makers very jittery.
Having a GE also puts the latest Android on a device and puts pressure on the makers of the device to move build it out into their MAIN version of Android.
So Key lime pie or 4.3 should come quicker on the HTC and S4 than would be tradtional.
Another issues is transparency.
For too long handset makers have said "our phone can't run the latest version of Android" when we know they lie.
Samsung has been good.. the S2 has JB while the HTC Sensation 4G has all but been dumped by their makers.
Companies that have a Google edition will have that extra edge in longevity.

Wake up and smell the coffee! Google is done with the huge monolithic OS updates that it once used to be known for.
Google is taking the approach of defragging the entire ecosystem by utilizing Google Play Services. Nearly EVERY SINGLE android device out there from 2.2 runs this service/application and is in total control by Google and no one else since it's closed source. It has become the core of Android now. They are focusing on applications now, forget the OS - this is the future. For all the whiners - it's the applications that make the device a great experience. The OS just provides the underlying layer, and Google has provided a rock solid one - it's done.
Seeing as how they stated that they want to support devices in land scape and portrait maybe they will come up with something to replace the nav bar, with something like pie controls.

Well I don't really think that 4.4 KitKat will be the next version of android. I don't know why but it just doesn't sound right. I mean all these hints from Google about klp for nothing? If you remember a Google employee had posted a picture of android eating klp which actually "confirmed" klp as the next version of android for me. It could be a marketing trick, like they show kitkat and then release 5.0 KLP . It could be a small "lie" from Google so that it keeps us thinking that they release 4.4 and then, boum they release 5.0. I could be wrong but I don't think 4.4 will be next version of android if you think how many android versions 4+ has supported (4.0, 4.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.3, and now 4.4???) All other android version numbers were supporting no more than two versions of android (1.5, 2.0, 2.2, 3.0,) Also I don't think Google would use a copyrighted name as their next version of android. Like I said, this could be a "trick" from Google or I could be totally wrong

I thought it would be good to start a threat about kitkat anticipation and also when a ROM is spotted we would have a place to talk about it. A lot of people are porting the HTC one ROMs to the one x and there is some CM kitkat ROMs already on the HTC one. So maybe we can find someone to port it soon. Its already apparent that the sense versions are behind . the HTC one has 4.3 and sense 5.5.. Pure android seems like it will be the only way for new ROMs
I feel as though we should leave kitkat alone and mainly focus on the roms at hand, but I definately would not mind a nice piece of chocolate if you catch my drift

I'm not sure why you see that. There were at least 2 or 3 devs that ported Sense 5 over from the M7 to the EVITA (before HTC released Sense 5 for us officially). As long as there is interest by devs, I don't see why they wouldn't do the same again for KitKat and Sense 5.5. True, the hardware hurdles will be an issue. But AOSP ROMs will experience their share, as well.

Team Venom has released the Viper ROM for the HTC One. They released ViperXL for ours. Seems like they have all the necessary talent and tools to put together a new ViperXL release with 4.3/Sense5.5
I am pretty sure Kit Kat is going to be a while. It would be really cool to get a 4.3 Rom good enough to be a daily driver. They are getting there. We still have a healthy Dev community.

As far as 4.3 being a daily driver, I'm running PAC 4.3.1 with touched 6.1 kernel with no problems, I use it as a daily driver. I've been on 4.3 maybe a month with little to no problems. So I think 4.4 is looking good for our phones

4.4 Kit-Kat is officially coming to The HTC One in January of 2014 So hopefully we see a nice port come to our One X/L
Unfortunately it's pretty difficult to port from the One due to the different chipsets and resolution, it just doesn't work properly. A port would need to come from a similar device, like maybe the One Mini.

You're not quite right about that. HTC push their own non-carrier updates to their non branded/Asian models and they do have a terrible record of keeping promises and getting them out on time, if at all.

Hey guys I have the international version but both versions seem to be abandoned by HTC but there is a glimmer of hope as Google want 4.4 pushing out to all devices capable of running it so hopefully HTC will update all the one series phones eventually.
Google can't even get their own nexus (galaxy) updated. What makes you think they can make HTC do it. This phone won't get any more updates. The next HTC one will be out soon and all focus will go for that.

Of course it will, its only a 2 months old device so they can't just ditch it like that. The specs can easily handle Android M.

Well the Mi3 and Mi4 is still stuck with kitkat 4.4.3/4.4.4 and they can easily handle lollipop. When I bought this phone, I sorta accepted the fact that android updates won't come. To be fair Xiaomi is updating MIUI OS quite often so I guess it's fine. Anyway I'm hoping that we get marshmallow on this powerful device. It'll be a waste not to get it
I was wondering if the phone needs android updates in order to get new emojis

I hope mi4c gets marshmallow as well, it just that I haven't seen any official confirmation. Personally I'm afraid that xiaomi might not update this phone because it's not available globally.

Any developers here would do it if it was somwhat posibile but Samsung doesn't release the source code of Exynos so it's somewhat impossibile. It's like you need to build a town with buildings but you don't have a map of pipes to see here you need to put it...
Developers need to write all the drivers and with guessing what where it goes and really is impossibile.
My Moto G 2013 will get CM 14 beacuse Motorola released the source code for Android 5.1 and they have a starting point. Here we have nothing.
Not going to happen. We'll see it in roughly six months.... Oh well... Samsung supports their devices like one time phones. Only sales matters no support. They have let their customers down so many times now...
I'm afraid that they'll make some patch and security update of Android 6 for S7/Edge sooner. But let's hope that they'll push hard for Note 7 and some king will port it on S7.
I'd start hunt for it. I feel free to give 20 USD donate for stable (almost) clean Android 7 ROM

Im sure the international phones will get it this year, carrier phones will get it next year heh
As Eurofighter_ty said above, there will be no "porting" of Android N (or any other non-Touchwiz ROM like CyanogenMod) to a Samsung device with an Exynos SoC due to proprietary sources that Samsung will not release. There are exceptions where an extremely talented and motivated dev takes the time to reverse engineer drivers.
If history serves, it will be several months before Samsung starts rolling Nougat out, newest and most important devices first (N7, S7, S7E...). These are things to know before buying any Samsung device.
Maybe, i should just wait for S8 then XD

I would agree, I've seen major android updates in the past where its been like a step backwards and so it only leads to disappointment. Hopefully we are at a stage with android where this update (6 to 7) is more of a polishing of the current OS. Yes I know there are some additional features but its not a major overhaul as we've had in the past. I think most people would mostly appreciate some better consistency with battery life, Im not saying mine isnt good but there still seems to be a high android OS usage,so hopefully the enhanced doze feature tackles this, but we'll see. The one benefit of not getting the update right now is that over the next few months hopefully a lot of issues will be ironed out, for instance app compatibility. There are almost always cases where "I've just upgraded but now XXXX app doesnt work??" and you have to wait for the dev to update so their app so that it works nicely with the latest release.
Some of the Android N features are already in the S7. Multi window for example. Or Android for Work which overlaps with Knox. Other stuff is nice but only for new devices, like the seamless updates. The new JIT may be an exception, and the new graphics subsystem would also be nice.
About the VR stuff: I double Samsung will enable it for the Gear VR but we can of course hope.
Expect to have android N next year around April or May
