My screen replacement experience - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So my S3 had a cracked screen. So I bought a replacement. Removed the old one using instructions on Youtube etc. My replacement screen was like $7 from eBay. It came with all the tools and some new double sided adhesive. I got the screen installed and it worked. Here's the tricky part. It was about half as responsive. I figured it was due to not using the LOCA UV glue that it comes held with from the factory.
So today I removed the replacement screen. Luckily I got it removed without cracking it. I turned it on and started using it without the screen and it seems like it is like stock. No damaged digitizer. Thank goodness. I have ordered some LOCA glue from eBay to redo the repair.
We have several UV boxes\lamps where I work for curing adhesive. So I will do the redo repair there with glue. I assume there was air gaps between the glass and digitizer. The glue should fix that. The best video i saw was using both the double sided adhesive and the LOCA glue. The guy used the tape on top where the ear piece is most importantly the bottom to hold the capacitive buttons down and also make them stick well to the glass.
If you are planning on doing this repair go with the LOCA glue. I saw several UV mini flashlights for very cheap that you could probably buy for $3 or $4 dollars to cure the glue. I wish I had kept the leftover clear double sided tape in hindsight to adhere the capacitive buttons down to get a good connection.

Yeah, I wish I read something like this. I had a nightmare of a time. I replaced just the glass initially, but when I would be pushing for a while, the glass would bend and press onto the screen. That was just the first problem.
Then I went to the developer options and showed touches on the screen. I seemed to have a non responsive screen at time, so I thought I'd see if my touches were registering. Aaand I had a touch that would get stuck on the screen. Cool beans.
Then like an idiot, I thought I'd ghetto rig it. I got some 5 min epoxy and slathered it to the screen and pressed the glass to it. That wasn't a proud moment. It might have worked if there wasn't a million bubbles in the glue.
So then I was like, screw it, I'll order an assembly from eBay.
I got my first assembly, put it all together and the touches weren't very responsive at all! They worked like 50% of the time. Not only that, but I looked closely at the whole assembly and realize that it was a horrible knockoff! The screen was smaller than OEM and the "Pebble Blue" was all kinds of messed up.
So then I ordered a new one that claimed that it was OEM and from Samsung. Cool
. I ordered it, and low and behold, SAME JUNK! I was so mad.
I went fk it. I ordered the screen assembly without the frame, cleaned my old frame off, and got it ready. When it came in, I wanted to cry, it was so beautiful and OEM. I returned all the other craps and got my money back from the one, but the other company that claims that it was OEM decided to send me another one! Even after they said they would give me a refund. I just shipped the second one back yesterday... Man, all said and done, it cost me $150 and a lot of time. Samsung would have done it for $176.95. Lesson learned. :banghead:

Good video for Inspire 4G screen replacement?

Has anyone seen a good take apart/repair guide for the Inspire4G. Just got digitizer replacement and cannot for the life of me figure out how to attach the ribbon cable without totally disassembling the phone. Hoping to avoid this.
If this is the wrong forum, please direct me to a better one rather than flaming me.
Thanks
Fairly certain that ifixit.com has a good teardown.

Thanks for the tip, but I find nothing for the DesireHD/Inspire4G there other than a total disassemble for the HD that I've already seen, but really did not help me. I just need to change to touch screen. I appreciate the try though.
Got it apart. And kinda back together. Apparently it is not a good idea to reuse the double sided tape that holds the LCD to the motherboard and the digitizer to the LCD. At least the phone works. Now, must order some proper adhesive tape and redo the whole thing.... Took me about 6 hours for whole breakdown and rebuild. Doesn't really seem to fit back together all that well though. Maybe I'll videotape my next breakdown.
Couple of questions as my phone is in need of a new digitizer too.
Did you have any other adhesive tapes in the process?
What did you use to cut the tape that held the LCD together after you baked it?
Does the phone mostly feel the same now that you have it back together, or does it feel flimsy now?
I'm disappointed that it's this difficult to replace the digitizer.

Just so you know, I was a TOTAL noob in phone deconstruction. That being said, the old adhesive seemed quite sticky after i took it apart so I just reused it. Mistake number one. Once it was back together, i notice it slowly opening up like an accordion. The tape wasn't holding and the LCD, digitizer assembly started to rise up. I have since ordered some adhesive tape from the place I got the digitizer from. Definitely get the tape.
I did not bake it as in the video (i assume you watched the same one I did). I used an old spark plug gauge tool thingie to just cut through the tape. It was still really sticky so after i struggled to insert the digitizer ribbon cable, I just reused it. Don't do this. Get new tape.
I did have some plain old scotch double sided tape. I used it in one spot. Lesson: Don't use this stuff. Get new tape.
Did I mention that I think you should get new tape? All in all, it was quite laborious. I went really slowly so as not to brick it. When it was done the phone worked, but like I said the LCD raised up after a couple of minutes. The adhesive was not working anymore. At least I have gained confidence for the next take-apart. I can't believe i GOTTA go alll the way back to total break down. Aaaarrrgh.
So something like this should do the trick?
http://www.harborfreight.com/32-piece-sae-metric-feeler-gauge-32214.html
Thanks for the heads up... Where exactly do you recommend putting the tape? Does it just go on the black edges of the digitizer, or does it actually go on the surface of the LCD? Sorry if that's a noob question, but I haven't gotten the glass off and I want to make sure I have enough adhesive tape from the Ebay Vendor. Did you have any issues with reusing the mylar?
Sorry for the 1000 questions, I really don't want to shell out off contract prices for another phone...
Mylars were all reusable if removed carefully. I photographed every step so I would know what to put back where. Still waiting for my tape from Repairs Universe. The biggest two culprits are:
1] Tape holding back of LCD to the silver chassis frame and
2] Tape holding SIM FPC to the main board.
You might also tape the PCB cover to the upper board, mine was loose after rebuild.
That I believe that is it for the major tape requirements. Of course the digitizer needs to be taped to the LCD. I'm curious, though, the tape framing the LCD holding the digitizer seemed to have some thickness to it. Almost like foam rubber, quite thin, but thicker than regular cellophane tape.
Good luck. Let me know if you have any tips after your attempt.
Got the tape. Retried to rebuild with new OEM tape. Same result. The phone when completed expands like an accordion. The digitizer/LCD assembly does not stay stick to whatever is under it. I know when to admit defeat. Looks like I'm shelling out 500 for another phone. At least I have spare parts!
yeah i was going to do my screen myself till i seen the tear down & then called afew places around here that does screen replacements and said NO we won't touch the Inspire, i spent the money and let HTC fix it. was worth it they replaced the whole shell not just the screen ... IE lcd / digitizer / Outer case that was scratched and dented... basically a new phone with the guts out of my phone
I attempted to do this and let me just say that I too now have spare parts. I purchased a phone off of ebay. I didn't realize the no contract price went up to around 500.00 I should have gone directly to HTC. Live and learn...
I will be in possession of an HTC Inspire for testing purposes that also has a cracked screen. Not sure how bad it is but I was planning on just replacing the display for learning purposes. However it seems that it may not be worth the time spent.
If I do decide to give it a go I'll post my results here. First thing is to acquire new tape. Did you all purchase it locally or did you buy the adhesive online?
YouTube has lots of videos. Best to watch a few a see the best way. If you are scared to break it best you send it in for repair instead. Get a digitizer and screen combo.

[Q] Samsung Infuse Cracked Glass

I have a samsung infuse from AT&T and recently dropped my phone.
The glass is completely cracked; however, the touch screen is working like normal.
Is there a way to replace the cracked glass only?
If it is possible, does anyone have instructions or a guide on how to fix the cracked glass?
Or, would I just have to file a claim with AT&T Insurance?
Thank you!
Your most likely going to have to claim insurance on your phone from my research the glass is not replaceable !!!

Either of you go through with this yet? Would be curious to hear how it went...
I've looked around online, and everything I'm seeing says the digitizer, LCD, and outer glass are one fused together piece on the Infuse:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZI6d59ufSc
Even though eBay sellers have the Infuse outer glass for sale separately, it seems like pulling the glass off of the LCD/digitizer without destroying it is going to be extremely difficult. Even if you get the old glass off without damage, you still need to figure out how to attach the new glass to it.
Then what??????

This must be the instructions to remove outer screen because I have seen a video to replace the digitizer and screen assembly and it just popped off after removing some ribbon cables. I am waiting for outer screen ,outer casing and battery cover to arrive from China. Cost $30 with shipping. Will look brand new on outside if it works. I'll let you guys know how I make out.
Edit....After removing top glass with razor blade as it is fused to LCD with glue I lost response to touch. Ordered new LCD and digitizer with bezel (plastic frame that screen is attached to and circuit board mounts on) . I am not sure if I could get it to work if I could glue or fuse new top glass back on. Scratched the heck out of it anyways. Live and learn, if anyone else had better luck I would like to know.
I had great luck with mine. I started by heating the outer glass with a blow dryer and used a card from a regular deck of playing cards starting from top to bottom of the screen to get it started. After i got it about half way i didn't even use the blow dryer anymore just allot of playing cards. You have to be extremely careful on the top right of the LCD not to damage the ribbon for the digitzer. I got a few minor scratches on the LCD from shards of old glass but you can only see them if the screen is off and you look really hard. It pretty much looks brand new now. I just used thin double sided tape on the outside edges of the new glass for now as i haven't found a permanent way to hold down the glass yet. I will probably leave it that way so next time it breaks i don't have to go through the long process of separating the glass from the LCD again. In my opinion it was well worth the $10 and the labor to replace just the outer glass rather than the $130-$150 for the replacement LCD/digitizer and outer glass.
Thanks for trying.

Hey thanks for trying, braveheart. I'm gonna try that too. Dont have a 100 to spend on the pair.
Can you make a guide of that? I think it will help alot of users. You can get pictures from internet and mark the critical points which will help in separation.
broken screen. Help!!! .
Month back, dropped my phone(2-3 times).
Now stuck with unusable mobile.
Can somebody suggest, where I can get its lcd [email protected]+ digitilizer, on cheap price.

Broken screen

Ive cracked my screen and ive found i can buy a new screen and lcd for 169.99. or i can buy just the over glass for $20. I heard you can use a heat gun to seperate the glass and the lcd. Has anyone done this and can tell me if it works?

Mostly likely the digitizer will get destroyed in the process. Buy the complete unit.
Someone said a few days ago he only replaced the glass but he had to break it in order to separate it, use the search I bet you'll find it quickly. If you can afford it take the whole thing, less chances of screwing up your phone, and you could always keep the old lcd for a test run with a glass only or in case you somehow manage to crack it again.
Still I'd suggest buying a screen protector once you fix your screen, costs less, barely noticeable and saves a whole lot of money and hassle.

This. I cracked my screen and bought an entire new one for $160 via ebay. It took 10 minutes to take apart and install the new one and be back up and running. I also bought the Otterbox Defender, honestly...works like a charm. It's durable, nice, feels good and it doesn't feel as bulky as it looks. The only down fall about a case with a screen protector is that the Galaxy series has a screen that goes all the way to the edge of the phone (like most modern phones now) so hitting stuff on the VERY edge of the screen is more difficult because of the raised case.
Buy the screen and a protector and if you are still curious, buy the replacement glass for your broken screen and try it. Worst case, you're out 20 bucks and have a completely broken screen (would be out the other $160 for the new screen you'd have to buy if you mess up any way) or best case, you're out $20 bucks but have a new screen incase you ever break it again.
Unscrew the 7 screws on the back (one is above the sim slot, keep it separate as it's a different size) and once you take the back piece off, there's one small black screw holding the board to the screen. The phone is 3 pieces, screen, board and back piece, it's extremely simple. Just pop all the circuit things with your nail or whatever (there's like 6 total). You have to pry your headphone jack off as it's glued unless your new screen comes with one...doubt it.
someone posted they got sammy to replace it for 189, call sammy up and see what they say, i think thats a good price

I repair phones and have replaced Lcd/digi assembly on both I727 and T989. No way you get that apart without busting the exiting assembly up. The cheapest part can be order via Ebay from China and you'll have to wait about two weeks for part. Or there's the company I used in San Fancisco at gounlock dot com that has it listed at $154 I believe. They have a listing on ebay under SkyStarTrade and I offered em $148 including shipping and the took it. I had the part in 3 days. Would highly recommend!!!!!!
I just got off the phone with Sammi Friday. The Rep quoted me $158 to replace the glass. So if they mess up the digitizer is on them. Cheaper than I was able to find the combo anywhere on line. So tomorrow my phone heads back to Sammi. I'll let you know in about three weeks how the service was and whether they honored their quote.
And exactly 8 days from the date that I shipped it to Sammi I have a my phone back. They replaced the LCD, bezel and glass for $158 as quoted. Not only that but they paid all shipping and used UPS 2nd day air both ways. And I'm still under warranty by having them take care of it. All in all couldn't be happier with the service. So if anyone needs the glass fixed my vote would go to Sammi.

how much does it cost to replace it, and can you do it yourself?
Dropped mine from my lap in the car to the ground. Cracked the top and bottom of the diffuser. Problem is diffuser is bonded to the LCD so I have to replace the whole assembly which sucks very much bad.... Oh and I had the case on it too... Smh

$17.99 i just bought one im waiting on it to come in the mail and i found a youtube video to show me how to do it lol
For those who have had to replace the screen, does dust now get under it?
I replaced my screen on a few older phones (some replaced by a service, others by myself), and like clockwork after a few months, dust develops under the screen.
I've almost pretty much settled that if my screen shatters, I'll get it fixed and immediately sell it to avoid that.
Best Case ist Otterbox Commuter or Defender
I hate Otterbox Defenders...so bulky & just ugly. I know, theyre for protection, but these new phones like the One X are just uglied up by the big bulky cases.
Anyway, as for the display changing...I just did a couple last week, no picnic at all. The person that said he changed one in 15 minutes I would bet the farm was a bad overexaggeration...unless you do 20 a day you won't even get this baby apart completely to even think about replacing the screen in 15 minutes.
As for $17.99 I haven't looked at the link yet, but I'm betting it's just for the outer glass (touch panel) and not the digitizer/combo assembly. I scoured the net and could only find the touch panel for this price. The combo (touch panel & lcd) as one fused unit I found for about $80, normally around $145 in most of the usual places.
These ship with the touch panel/digitizer fused, so separating them is basically impossible. I've seen a couple of posts where people say they've successfully removed the glass & replaced it only, but I'm guessing it was someone blowing smoke, or their screen has already been replaced with the 2 individual parts that are not fused.
I opted to choose the 2-part deal for one main reason...both of the ones I replaced were in cases, and fell a very short distance & shattered badly. I'm guessing like the OG Evo, there's really not going to be anything you can do to ultimately protect these, so I'm anticipating future screen changes...hence, the unfused 2-part combo.
I got the outer glass for less than $20, and the LCD for $35 both from Amazon. I was pretty thrilled when I got the glass, as the AT&T branding is gone & replaced with HTC instead. (I hate branding, especially since I use mine on Straight Talk)
I think the first one took me about 3 hours to do, the pieces are a horrible blind jigsaw puzzle of dependencies inside the phone, everything is gorilla glued & two-sided taped to death so it's difficult to break down without destroying important, fragile stuff.
After disassembly it wasn't bad with a heat gun to get the screens out, then made sure to clear out all of the adhesive which took quite a while...that stuff is gnarly.
Then I put in the LCD panel, got it situated & used 2 sided tape cut to around 1cm to edge the LCD for the Touchscreen to be laid on it. Added a LIGHT coat of some really strong bonding adhesive to the 4 corners & the middle of the 2 sides to make sure it holds but don't bleed out under the screen.
Laid down the touchpanel & applied firm pressure for a few hours before I reinserted the phone assembly back into the casing.
The beauty ring around the outer screen got a bit ugly on the first one, the second one came out pristine. No issues at all with bubbling under the screen, it's super sensitive & feels like they did brand new again.
The only issue I have, is when you're doing disassembly, one of the ribbons is held down by the very flimsy & fragile piece of circuit tape that the haptic buttons are in, and on both of them, the lights are much dimmer under the haptics than they were before. I don't think there's any way to remove & reinstall this piece without some minor amount of damage or degradation to the lights, but it functions perfectly fine.
All in all, it worked well, and if I have to replace a cracked screen again, it will be a much less expensive, easier fix the second time around. Also pay close attention when reassembling to your antenna wire, it has a connection much like the bluetooth wire you attach to a card in a laptop and if you're not very careful, when snapping back into place it can interfere with your antenna & your phone charging system.
If this helped at all, please click the "Thanks"

So theres no issues with the screen changing colors? Like the old digital watches and calculators used to when you pressed the screen? I still haven't replaced mine and looking for an alternative to the 150 for the combo. Not really concerned too much with longevity, I'll get rid of it or redo it in about a year anyway so if it last that long I'm good.

Best place to order a screen replacement?

I dropped my nexus 5 getting out if the car and now the glass screen is shattered at a corner. The digitizer seems fin and every where on the screen is responsive.
So I was wondering if there were a place i can order just the LCD screen and without the digitizer/housing.

The digitizer and LCD are fused together.. You need to replace them both!
If I were you, I would send it to a LG Service outlet and let them replace it. The ones you order online may or may not work + you need to do everything yourself. However, if you're good at it, then ordering online will certainly save you few bucks!
As the phone is only $350. Spending anything more then $150 won't do it for me as I'd rather buy a new or used phone. I was hoping there was a place to get just the glass part.

The only way that makes sense is if you can get a phone that is as good or better than the n5 for $150 or less.
I dropped mine, three days after it was delivered, no case as it had not yet arrived
The corner of the case was dented and the screen shattered but still fully useabIe.
I was wary about knock off spare parts and my skill with glue and tape if I went DIY so I sent mine in to LG service centre. The cost was £114.67 including Special delivery both ways ( Insured, tracked, next day delivery).
The worst part was the waiting, it took them 10 days to give me an estimate of he cost and three more days to get it back to me. It is good as new now and still has warranty.
I've just checked, thats about $190! So I uderstand your dilemma.

This is Elena from parts4repair.com,we can offer only oem glass for you,(the original one is out of stock now),and I am a new user,so i can't offer the link for you, maybe you will be interested to visit our website,or contact with us by [email protected].
Please notice that:the outer glass lens is without any function of digitizer or display. and only glass replacement is a professional job, and special tools are required, too. By the way, glass and the screen are bonded together, so both separating them and gluing them together are difficult job. Please sure you can do it before order.
Hope can help you,Thanks.
Never try to replace just the glass. You'd need loca glue & a uv light to cure it. The glue could get into other components and totally ruin your phone. And even if by a small chance you can pull it off, it will never be 100 percent. Always replace the whole assembly. - coming from somebody who has tried to replace just the glass.

you are right,it is very hard to get it done right by people who mostly have no experience,so please think twice before do it if it is first time for you to change it.And we also can offer LG N5 D820 a full screen assembly(front housing cover + digitizer + lcd screen+glass).
I used my old front housing and removed the old LCD and Glass. It was very difficult but it came out working 100%. This has been the 3rd display I have fixed and so far the most difficult. The rest of the parts were really easy though. Just separating the LCD and housing was painstakingly time consuming and dangerous.
