Nexus 5 alternative choice

If the N5 doesn't live up to your expectations which phone would you prefer instead even if cost were not a factor?
Is there another carrier flagship phone that you are satisfied would be flexible enough for you to be able to do all of the following?
root, rom;
restore to stock rom if necessary;
return to store after restoring stock rom;
upgrade via carrier upgrade plan after restoring stock rom?
make a potential carrier warranty claim after restoring stock rom?

If the Nexus 5 doesn't list up to my expectations, I will go back to my Galaxy Nexus. It may not be the most state of the art device but with CM ROM's and faux123's kernels, I can't go wrong with it.

That's actually the phone I own also but I've got it pretty heavily loaded over the last 2 years. I really think I need at least another gig of ram to run well and a faster processor wouldn't hurt. The non-removable 2300 battery on the N5 is just a real disappointment. I've only owned nexus devices so far and I'm a bit concerned that a carrier flagship may not be flexible enough.

A non-removable battery might be a deal breaker for me. I like to be able to just swap batteries if needed. I sure hope it doesn't end up with a non-removable battery. I am not a fan of LG stuff in the first place and I avoided the Nexus 4 for various issues. With T-Mobile not announcing another Sidekick anytime soon, I need to upgrade. I don't like the physical home buttons on phones so that has kept me away from the S4 and other phones. My original Galaxy Nexus actually got damaged due to heavy rain I got caught in and I couldn't get another from my carrier. I ended up getting an S4 to trade my mother for her Galaxy Nexus.

To be honest, nothing beats the Nexus experience to me, and I can't even think of other choices with what I have experienced. When I think of a Nexus Phone I don't really give a huge deal for the hardware internals, because it's not really meant to be a show off with the latest hardware and the largest battery. Samsung soon will hit a 1000 cpu cores into their Exynos bully maybe, and yet their Touchwiz phone LAG and stutter. A properly minimally optimized OS over a good deal of hardware is what Google brings, not to forget the minimal design of the phone, and oh for a damn good price - I wouldn't ask for more.

I played with the LG G2 for over an hour, and decided it was too Samsung 'cheapie' plastic to suit me. The HTC One Max would be my next phone, despite an S600 chipset, based on durability and useability, and those speakers would come in quite handy at times.

If the Nexus is a no-go on Verizon I'll likely wait until the Moto Maker site goes live for VZW and at least get 32 gigs of internal storage. Feels really good in the hand and super smooth

+1 - love just been able to swap a fully charged battery. Extremely convenient... though from the leaks it looks very unlikely. Though I'm quite over my S4 atm and wanna try something different - the N5 looks like it could be a good choice.

That it does. That's why I have been looking forward to it. The camera sticking out a bit also bugs me about the phone also. These two things are bugging me very much. With the time I get out of my Galaxy Nuxus battery on normal use, it might be fine for me for normal daily use. If I need to go out of town though, camping, or some where I just can't get to a charger, I'll have to hold on to my Galaxy Nexus to make sure I've got something I can stretch out for a couple of days.
The wireless recharging for the Nexus 5 is something that really caught my attention as a good thing. Being able to just sit my phone down on my desk when I get in and have it charge is awesome! The screen also looks very nice for slightly under 5 inches. Hopefully the announcement and launch kicks off today.

Who buys carrier branded crap phones with their ugly logos ... Nothing can beat a Nexus in Android world.

yeah me too about the battery thing. I like to have a removable batt so I can buy an extra and swap it if my other one drains. But I think powerbanks are also helpful for non-removable batteries as well. #confusing hahaha

The Nexus has always been a developer only phone. But as it is for the camera that megapixels don't matter, so it is for the battery that the mAh won't matter. We have previously seen that the phones with an extra large capacity battery yet not perform as per the expectations. Atleast Google doesn't stuff their phones with bloatware like Samsung. A Nexus always comes with a minimal OS coupled with a balanced hardware at an unrivalled price. A non-removable battery & no expandable memory have always been the let downs, yet 32GB is enough for me for storage & a battery lasting just over a day is well enough for me. Nexus ftw !

I'm currently on an OG Note, recently bought a new battery and I have little problems with it. I'm mainly bored with it now and the USB port has some problems (€10 to fix). Minor issues and I'm sure I could use the phone for another year without ever really being bothered by it. I don't play games, so I don't really need all that raw power the new devices have. I have been looking for a new device for some time, just to have a new gadget and all.
I work for HTC indirectly so I have a One lying around here that I can use, but I can't root it so I have no use for it. I can't get used to the new Sense and their strange softkey layout (though that's more the fault of developers that don't keep to the design guidelines of Android, than it is HTC's).
I also had the S4, which I liked overall, but I found it too expensive, it had useless functions which I didn't want to pay for. Especially since you lose a lot of them when you put a stock rom on it. It has an AMOLED screen which, after two years of the Note, I'm not very happy about (uniform colours are a pain, and it degrades too fast). And it looks just like any other Samsung device (and I'm bored now). - I did get hooked on the infrared functionality though. I miss that every day.
Then the Z1 came along, looked refreshing and the waterproof stuff is a giant pro. Useless camera, but the rest was pretty good. Unfortunately the screen dissapoints.
So now I'm waiting for the Nexus 5. Absolutely no useless functions. Just a good and powerfull device that can last for another two years. No screwing around with roms and stuff and a good price.
If it dissapoints, I might go for an S4 as they're now in the pricerange of the Nexus 5 or I'll stick to the Note for another year, to see if something better comes up.

If not the Nexus 5, I'd go for the Oppo N1.
With out of the box CyanogenMod, IPS 5.9 inch display, and top-notch camera optics and dual user-controllable flash.
I have (had) the S4 and sold it today. I was extremely dissapointed with it in just about every way, and with the addition of Knox locked bootloaders being sneaked in by Samdung, that iced the "sell it now" cake for me.
I'm actually back to using the SIII in the meantime, and even with piss-poor driver support, it runs CM very well.

my choise is between Nexus 4 or Nexus 5

Actually, as far as the hardware goes, I am quite impressed with g2. That display seems so much larger than other phones of the same physical dimensions. Battery, processor, storage, etc. no limitations except no wireless charging. (except verizon version)
A play edition would be very tempting. Unfortunately it doesn't seem likely with the N5 being a somewhat close cousin. If the N5 had the exact same g2 hardware it would be a no-brainer for me even at a much higher cost.

Hi guys, I currently have someone I can buy an LG G2 from for $250 in pretty much new condition, only used for a bit and is going back to an iPhone. I currently own an N4 and love having Nexus devices--- fast updates, AOSP, etc.
I know the N5 is a stripped down G2, and I would prefer the N5 due to looks and feel, but is the better spec'd G2 a better buy at that price? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Battery size, GRAM, Display quality, camera. I know the N5 has received quite a few new updates to make the camera better. Do you think the 32 gb LG G2 at $250 is a better buy?

It drove someone back to iPhone. That's not a good sign.

Display and camera can be argued both ways. You're wrong about GRAM though. The AnandTech review confirmed that the N5 also uses it.

Agreed, the display is brighter on the Nexus 5 and far more accurate. The G2 is more saturated, and has better viewing angles. So depends on what you want.
Btw, where does Brian mention the GRAM? I can't find it in his review.

I can't stand the LG logo on the front of the device. Would not buy it. I know its stupid but that's me.

So I've been checking out the G2 forums, it's sad how dead it is. I think I'm just going to go with the N5, buy the G2 and flip it on ebay to make the burden on my wallet easier.

Yeah, development is the best on Nexus devices. G2, IMO, also has a ridiculous looking theme. I can stand Touchwiz but the one on G2 makes me puke... I couldn't believe how bad it was when I saw it. Of course I can put on Cyanogenmod but they're not stable yet, and they're not going to be for quite a while. I would rather not have a very buggy phone.
Another thing to consider is that the G2 seems to be having some problems with its touchscreen, as far as I can tell, everyone has this issue at some point. It can be fixed temporarily by turning it off then back on, but it comes back, sometimes a few days later and sometimes the next day. It can be maddening. He states "The other question was whether Nexus 5 also uses a PSR (Panel Self Refresh) type display. This display is indeed a MIPI command mode panel, the same kind of system, so yes it does include those features." This is the system the G2 uses, meaning that the phone has GRAM just like the G2 even if the review doesn't specifically call it out by name.

And I can confirm the battery reports that Anandtech made. Many people were finding it skeptical, including me. But Anandtech is one of the only websites that do objective testing, and making sure that the brightness is the same on all devices; unlike GSMArena which test the devices at 50% brightness.. I found another test showing that the Nexus 5 lasts longer than most phones here (they tested at 250 nits):

But perhaps far more interestingly, they tested the battery with and without PSR, so its worth checking out..
Does make me wonder though, if Google included so many optimizations and hardware (GRAM, Audio Tunneling, and Envelope Tracking), why do people still claim bad battery life?

My guess would be a combination of heavy usage, poor cell signal, and unrealistic expectations (probably the latter more than anything).

Yeah but many people have been saying that they get more usage out of the Moto X which doesn't really add up. If the Nexus 5 lasts as long as the HTC One and the S4 (it does better), I have no idea why it is getting such bad press by the reviewers..

I can't speak for the Moto X, but I've found the battery life with the N5 to be at least as good as my S4, if not better. Maybe people have their brightness set way too high or something? Who knows.

Yeah, the brightness on the Nexus 5 is way too high, even on the lowest setting... The lowest should go lower IMO.

I had really crappy battery life at first when I got this phone, until I realized that my screen was too damn bright. I keep it set at about 1/3 now which seems to be a good balance between brightness and battery life. It's still more than bright enough for my purposes, and I'm someone who hates dim screens.

Currently got a G3 and OPO is on its way

I've had the 32GB EU G3 for a month now and I've just bought (unfortunately) an invite on eBay after missing my invite from OnePlus but I am well excited! I can see me sticking with this phone, I am expecting to be disappointed with the size and weight but everything else should please

Another one here! Had the G3 for a few weeks now and just ordered the OPO today...I have the ATT version. Looking forward to the OPO!

I just sold the G3 when I got my One. I liked the G3 a bit better in the form factor as it was smaller but honestly, the One is a better all around phone at this point. Battery life is better, development is better, audio is better and its much faster with fewer lags. If they get Cyanogen working on the G3 it will be a fantastic phone but for all the hope there is with it now, I just can't see them unlocking the bootloader anytime soon on the AT&T model. My one does not have the yellowing issue but you can see the digitizer plainly. There are just many small issues with the G3. They can all be worked out but they will always be behind the One with Cyanogen. The difference in price was a big factor for me as I wanted a new Ping driver and that extra cash made the difference.

Bro, you should do your research first before buying anything lol The only real hardware fault that I've found on the OPO comes in the form of a yellow band found on the bottom 1/5th of the display, the yellow tint becomes apparent on white backgrounds, but it personally doesn't bother me, or I should say that I'm at peace with it now. For the price and specs, I'm happy with the purchase and compromise. There are a lot of people whining about the issue, and OnePlus has been ****ty with their service, but just open the packaging check it out, and if you don't like it, just sell it as new on eBay for a small 40-80 dollar profit after fees

Yeah I'm really looking forward to modified Cyanogen, I am a stock android fan anyway and I love the speed and transitions also with Android L around the corner, I think there is a much better chance of the OPO getting it first

Thanks for the reply mate, am I right in thinking the OPO is shipped from the country that you order from? So mine is shipped from the UK?
also if it does have the yellow banding (which I hope it doesn't because I can't overlook faults haha) will they not just exchange it?

Just ordered my opo to replace my oppo find 5 personal device, have a g3 work phone that I'm really digging, but got the invite and I'm excited for the upgrade.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the G3. If they had the development over there it definitely would have been a keeper. I think most of the compromises would be easily worked out by some good developers. The only thing that would not be able to catch up is the battery life. The size and the screen is fabulous for a 5.5" device. I'm still thinking the perfect phone would be a G2 sized device with all the updates of the G3 and the 805 processor.

I'm getting 50+ hrs per charge and avg about 5 to 6 hrs if SOT stock Rom, rooted. I think the G3 is one of the best phones I've used to date.

I actually love my G3 but I have been wanting the One for a while. #33467 on the OnePlus forum and did get my invite but gave it away because at the time my wife had a major surgery out of town from us and we were strapped for money. I just got the money together so I got the One. Or should I say its ordered.
I love Cyanogen and with the G3 so locked down right now for ATT I am glad I am able to get the One. I do have my G3 rooted with some good mods, viper4android, titanium, xposed tweakbox, etc. and it is very nice. It isn't as bogged down like my Sammy phones were with stock so I am enjoying it. But, I need development! I will be keeping it around. Letting the wifey take it and selling her note 3.

I've never got over 4 hours sot on my G3 with the exact setup as my one, this phone never has under 7. You can cook eggs on the G3 under certain situations so I respect the 4 hour sot, the energy has to come from somewhere

Im in the same boat, I have the ONEPLUS and have been using it for almost a month. I have had the opportunity to get the LG G3 which I really want to get but I have had one thing stopping me from getting it. 1.) The audio/headphone jack problem I heard about. Some users say they dont have it some say they do.
I prefer the G3 over the ONEPLUS because the screen is the same size but the phone form factor is smaller and easier on the hands and pockets. Also it has removable battery which is a HUGE plus and the external SD card which is pretty nice, even though I use Google Drive.
So..I probably will stick with the ONEPLUS for a while until I have to switch to the G3.

Tell my why I shouldn't return my One M9 for an S6

I've had my HTC One M9 for 2 days now, and I'm starting to see things that are disappointing to me. Especially for such a high end, pricey device. Battery life is not very good at all compared to my old LG G2. And it takes forever to charge. The camera is, for lack of a better word, horrible.
I'm trying to decide if I should return it to T-Mobile in exchange for a Galaxy S6. All the reviews I've read and watched lean toward the S6.

I was torn between the m9 and s6..after watching the keynote and seeing hands on videos, I quickly decided on the s6. I'm glad I did. Pictures look better than my g2 (the phone I came from). The screen crispness, colors and brightness is superb! Didn't mind not having micro SD or removable battery since I didn't have it before.
The only thing I find weird to adjust is that whites seem to have a yellow tint, where as on my g2 they were more blue or white (in my opinion).
The front facing camera is really nice quality too.
S6,higher res screen in a slightly bigger screen size. The size of s6 is smaller and lighter than the m9.

Well... the only cons are the same cons that every review mentions. Lack of SD card slot and price. Also the speaker quality is obviously lesser on the S6 if that matters to you.
The only other consideration is how much you care about rooting/unlocking/custom ROM support, which will certainly be stronger on the M9 just because it's a Snapdragon device. At least that's how it'll be initially.
Other than those, the M9 loses in every other measurable area.
So really the M9 Vs. S6 issue comes down to how much the price difference matters, how much you care about "3rd party" support, and whether or not you need a SD card slot.
Edit: Suppose the M9 warranty program is worth considering as well.

The screen crispness, colors and brightness is superb! Didn't mind not having micro SD or removable battery since I didn't have it before.
The only thing I find weird to adjust is that whites seem to have a yellow tint, where as on my g2 they were more blue or white (in my opinion).
The front facing camera is really nice quality too.
S6,higher res screen in a slightly bigger screen size. The size of s6 is smaller and lighter than the m9.

How's battery life compared to the G2? My M9 doesn't come close to my previous G2.

We'll, my G2 was running aicp 5.0.2 with custom rom which I could easily go 24hrs and be fine.
So far my s6 has slightly less battery life. But i can quickly go from 15% to 100% in an hour. Balances out. I'm using the s6 a lot to get things setup and such, so not quite a fair comparison. Letting the battery settle in for a week.
I do see a speed difference between my g2 and the s6 though
I'm even kinda been on the fence to keep my G2 and hold out what's to come in the fall, but that is very unlikely for me to do.

The s6 is faster, or the g2? Same here with waiting. I wanted to wait for the g4, but with T-Mobile's jump, I'm able to upgrade every 6 months. So, no biggie if I wanna go back to LG at the end of the year.

I haven't gotten the S6 yet since I'll have to wait until April 10th, and I'm also coming from a G2.
The S6 will definitely be faster- even though I really do enjoy my G2.

All the Bestbuy locations have the S6/Edge on display. I suggest you check them out in person.

If you are coming here to ask you have already made your decision. To be honest if you are interested in a G4 id wait until its announced and compare that to the S6 then get a device.

I'll tell you why you SHOULD return your One M9. The S6 is by far the biggest leap I've ever seen in a phone, and I've had every major LG/HTC/Samsung phone from the past 3 years lol.
It truly is a home run.

Keep m9 for a bit longer to see if anything changes in terms of camera and battery performance. I think a person should keep a phone for a least two weeks to get a good impression. Also go on HTC thread to see camera tricks. I'm getting m9 tomorrow and I will see if it will meet my great expectations as I'm coming from a phone that's three years old.
I would only buy s6 if camera was the main thing but for me it isn't and the negatives of the s6 outweigh my liking for the device. The soc difference isn't big in reality and I think they both have inconsistent battery reviews from people, so they are similarly disappointing. Design and ui are a personal opinion but I think m9 is better.
Go with whatever you like tbh and I hope whichever phone you choose you have a great experience

Only Gripe? Having a camera THAT bad is a HUGE fail on HTC's part, when the biggest weakness they've had since the M7 fiasco was their camera
All they had to do to save their company was fix their camera and put a 2K screen in their new flagship.
Instead, they did neither. I predict either a buyout from Samsung to grab patents or HTC simply going out of business in a year.

Screen is a moot point no real difference with 1080p its just a numbers game tbh. iPhone 6 has a lower resolution screen and funnily enough it also looks fine.

Thank god they didn't put a 2k display and the camera isn't an epic fail. They haven't pushed the sensor to what it is capable of. Also manual control says a different story. I doubt they are going bust this year and I think they would rather die then sell themselves to Samsung. I do hope they do get bought by another respectable company so they can be in a better position. They just need more money in R&D and marketing.

It depends, if you can buy the phone for a low price yes. Have a look at the Nexus 4, it´s > 2 years old and still got the latest updates from Google.
If you can wait a few months longer, you might want to wait for the latest Nexus device from Google ?
Other than that, the Nexus 5 is still a great device. Maybe I´m going to use mine for another year.

In terms of performance , the nexus 5 is still one of the fastest/smoothest android devices , But since it is a nexus it has some downsides like the battery and the cameras (both) .
If you can get a great deal on it don't hesitate to take it , otherwise don't buy it .
I advice you to wait few months for the new nexus . Because now is not a good time to buy a pure android device , Few months from now there will be a new nexus and a new moto x and oneplus two .

Battery is terrible, camera is subpar, non-removable battery (can be changed with small tools) , no sd slot , everything else is good. Koodo sells the lg g3 that has 3000mah battery, removable battery, sd card for $400 cad outright.

Unless you like phablets, yes, it is worth buying. There may never be another stock device in a decent size again. This phone performs better than a nexus 6 too as far as I can tell. (Owned a nexus 6 for a couple months and wasn't impressed)

Lg g3 is far behind the nexus 5 in performance and user experience . My brother owns a G3 and he is not happy with it , every thing is good in the G3 except that It is terribly slow and laggy even with custom ROMs and kernels .
I don't know what was lg thinking when designing their UI , But they succeeded to make Android ugly , fat and slow !

That does look really nice. Perfect specs really. With that resolution it will perform better than any phone released yet. If I wasn't on Sprint I probably would check it out if the next nexus turned out to be too big. Sony doesn't seem to have a relationship with Sprint though and I cannot switch carriers due to signal issues at my work (I work in a hospital basement and Sprint has a contract with us for a system that gets signal to the basement. Any other carrier is no signal).

I went from the N5 to the G2 (on 4.4.2) and I'd say the experience is good but runs at 70% speed of the N5. On the other hand, I get double the battery of my previous N5's so I couldnt be happier. :victory:
To answer the question, Yes buy the N5 if the price is right, i.e. below $200 in good condition. If battery life is more important consider the G2 if you can get it below $200.
