Galaxy S4 (play edition) v Nexus 5 - Galaxy S 4 General

I was keen to get a nexus 5 but now am not sure if the Google edition s4 is a better buy.
Assuming that they are a similar price I think the Pro's / cons break down as follows
S4 Pros
Hardware buttons (I consider this pro)
Removable battery
Updates from google
SD card
Better camera?
S4 Cons
Possibly slower updates than N5
Slower processor
Nexus Pros
Faster updates
Better processor
Better dev community
Nexus Cons
No removable battery
No removable storage
Is there anything else that should make me consider one other the other, I intend to keep either device for 2/3 years.

There's a (small?) mistake in your pro list for the S4. The updates don't come from Google. They are provided from Samsung. The Play edition is only a TW firmware with AOSP look and without all the Samsung extras, but it still is a tarned Touchwiz.
The pro would be the clean firmware and the faster updates than non-GE phones.

Not that I'd remember right now, but the 4.3 update came on the GE devices only one week after the Nexus updates.
The TW version came "just now" officially to the end-user

My concern with the N5 is battery. I'm not so sure if 2300mah is good for SD800 and 5' FullHD beast.
That's why I went for a G2 from S4. Just like OptimusG and N4, the close relation between G2 and N5 will ensure good dev support for G2. And the hardware on G2 is almost impeccable. Check it out.

Bumping an oldie because im going back and forth. I've had my N5 since release but man, a swappable battery sounds wonderful right now. Anyone else have this dillema?

Samsung Galaxy Nexus or other phone such as S III ??

Hi all, as the title
I dunno is it the best time to go for Samsung Galaxy Nexus
but I really love it
because my current phone is LG optimus one which is my 1st android phone
furthermore, once I buy either 1 of them I don't want to change phone for 2year, so if get Nexus now, then get next 2 generation Nexus phone(same to other)
so which should I go ??
and also since MWC gonna reach, and sure got new phone announce
but after wait them announce, still need wait them release, and bring by either Samsung, LG, Motorola and other for my country for the original set
*i prefer original set than ap set(not sure other country got ap set or not)
so anyone please help me decide ><
thanks
Regards
Imo it's not worth the wait because the SGSIII will be like the nexus but with better internal specs which really isn't noticeable, unless you like to play games a lot on your phone or something.
SGS2 over the nexus if you can live with touchwiz or CM9. Benefit of a nexus line is that you get updates first and a true aosp rom.
SGS3 may be out Q2 or even Q3 if it gets delayed. Who knows what improvements it will bring.

If you're always trying to stay atop of the game, you'll be disappointed.
Go with the Nexus instead of waiting for the SGSIII.
At least you know you'll always have a dev community and at least Google support for years.
I would go for galaxy nexus instead of waiting. I hate waiting for new phones. I think, if you have a good phone, it will remain good although a new one was released in next months
If you don't mind Touchwiz and love specs, probably the S3. But if you want the fastest updates and can't wait get the Galaxy Nexus. It's impossible to stay on top of everything in the mobile space unless you got a bunch of cash to burn. If you keep waiting there will be more developments but at what cost?

if want I9100, must buy ap set, otherwise original set = I9100G
as I said on 1st post, I prefer original set
although is same, but personal opinion
furthermore, S II too common already
dunno what to choose between S II and Galaxy Nexus now ><

original set all is I9100G which less dev support at all

I'd wait for the SGSIII because of better specs but I think that the TouchWiz interface that Samsung will surely slap on there will spoil it for me. You can always flash another ROM though.

Yes the Nexus has it. You should go for the Nexus. Both phones are basically equal specs wise, but the Nexus is always going to be special. Also, if you want an SGSIII when it comes out the Nexus will hold its resale value better than the SGSII.
Galaxy S or SII its the best, because is android and is really solid material is SAMSUNG and is great.

There is a great camera comparison between the 2 phones. If camera is your MOST important feature, I would go with the SGSII. If you like AOSP and the Nexus line, go with the Nexus. With the review though, the cameras aren't that far apart, and the Nexus takes better pictures with the flash. I personally have just bought a Nexus.

Future Proof Android Phone with Budget Constraint(20k inr/$360)

Well, I have been using LG Optimus One P500, currently running on CM7.2 nightly. It's been a great experience
but it's became really an old device(although unofficial CM9 can be run on this but buggy, very much buggy and with
laggy cam, problematic tethering and no youtube HQ).
So I am looking for a mid range android which is future proof for a few years. Even if it can't get the official update, it should run custom roms of upcoming Android versions properly.
So what should be approximate specs? I am thinking of Dual or really Powerful Single Core,512mb-1gb RAM and Bigger Than 3.2inches Display and at least 5mp Cam and Popularity(good Dev Following)
Some Phones I've sorted out. Feel free to add more options please(well, only international versions available in India).
Moto Defy Plus or XT535(heard something about locked Bootloader so not much custome rom?)
Sony Xperia Sola(matches my criteria but 1350mah Battery..eh? My P500 has 1500mah and lasts not so long)
Sony Xperia ARC S(single core..future proof?)
Galaxy Advanced(best among these but almost empties my pocket and old architecture CPU-U8500 for so much money)
Xperia P(Same as Galaxy Advanced but a little more pricier, still no AMOLED)
Galaxy S II (Over the budget, One year old..Probably I'll not go for it for the budget issue)
Thanks in Advanced.

I would say that Sony recently has really good update support for their products (all 2011 phones got ICS except xperia Play).
you may consider to get xperia P. it has 1gb RAM which I think an important factor to upgrade your OS (maybe more important than having powerful processor).
my second option is galaxy s II. don't go for mid-range phone from samsung (e.g galaxy advanced or gal ace 2).
samsung only gives update to their high-end products.
No phone is future proof. But if you wanted one that was going to get updates for at least a bit longer then the carriers or OEM issue them then I would get a nexus. You have to remember that unless an official update is released for an older device there will always be things theat may not work if a updated OS is ported from another device.

I would definitely recommend the Xperia P or if you decide you can swing it the Galaxy SII. The Xperia will receive long-term support and direct update via Sony and they are doing a lot to make sure firmware is readily accessible for developers. The Samsung should also continue to get relatively timely updates and if nothing else it has a huge dev community who will keep giving you access to the latest and greatest.
As mentioned nothing will be futureproof, but either of those two should keep you happy for some time to come.
I'm surprised no one's said it yet(hope I'm not missing something), but what about the Galaxy Nexus? It's US$349 from the Play Store right now. I'm unsure if you can purchase and ship it to India directly from the Play Store, but maybe you could find someone to help out?

Currently Nexus is not available in Indian Market and don't know why Google allowed only Play 'App' Store in India! Neither Music Nor Books unlike iTunes.
And if it would be available, it would be at a little higher..well quiet lot higher(for me..more than +5000rupees/$100) price range.
And Thank you guys, I am going for Galaxy S Advanced as no other phones offer so much features within this price range other than Xperia P. But why would I spend 2000 bucks extra when I am getting better spec(the AMOLED..pentile though). I hope all Galaxy S series will continue getting same attention of Devs as much its Grandfather S2(now S3) have been getting.
And I am pretty much convinced build quality wise and battery wise Samsung does a lot better than Sony.
Why don't you look at HTC One V or LG optimus L7? You can run custom roms on it as and when they become stable.

Android 4.4 Galaxy S4 DISCUSSION

Alright guys, if you haven't already heard the awesome news, Google has finally released Android 4.4 KitKat along with the $350 16GB Nexus 5.
Let's make a few guesses, guys. From articles that I've read online, Google has already released open source AOSP sources for Android 4.4. The question is, when, do you think, we are going to receive this update officially on either TouchWiz or Google Edition models of the S4?
Also, since the source has been released, when do you think we'll see Android 4.4 KitKat in custom ROMs (CyanogenMod, AOKP, ParanoidAndroid, etc)?
Also, if you have any comments and questions, FEEL FREE TO USE THIS POST AS AN ALL AROUND DISCUSSION ON THE TOPIC OF ANDROID 4.4. THANKS!

According to the articles I read, it should be coming in the "next few weeks." I take that to read before xmas for the Google Edition ones.
For us lowly Canucks on Rogers, I figure we'll see it around July. =\

Considering most of us aren't evening running 4.3 yet I don't foresee AT&T rolling 4.4 anytime soon. Granted, those who are able to run custom rom's may be able to update to it in due time. But for the lot of us on MF3 we're going to fall behind unless by some miracle Samsung releases the keys at AT&T's discretion.

I bought a Nexus5 2 minutes into the sale. Going to be a hard decision whether to give it to my mom, or to give her my GS4, as she doesn't have a smartphone. I'm loving the google play edition rom on 4.3, and I'm not sure I'd want to part with the phone since it will get 4.4 anyway. The Google Play Edition really breathed life into the GS4 compared to the stock AT&T touchwiz 4.2 rom. It's like a completely different phone, except, unlike a custom rom, everything works, every time. No FC's.

Yeah man, I feel ya! I'm actually running Kangabean GE 4.3 right now and a dual boot with the Omega 4.3 ROM. Touchwiz sure has its perks, but it just doesn't feel well and its quite ugly at times. Even though we don't get the cool air gesture features while running different forms of AOSP, I'd still say its safe to say that the S4 on Google Edition is one of the best phones to have. You have expandable memory and removable batteries, also hardware keys. The Nexus 5 lacks these things. I'm just hoping we get this 4.4 update soon, because I've been dying for it ever since it was rumored to come out!

I couldn't justify biting the bullet and buying the Nexus 5...mainly because the developer base for flagship Samsung phones (S2, S3, and now S4) is so active.
I just had to keep reminding myself that I always end up with the latest nightly of CyanogenMod on every phone I own...so id be buying hardware spec upgrades and not much else (in regards to software since CM is eventually going to absorb 4.4 in its source base)
Man was it hard to say no though.....
I'm very excited for the GE edition to be coming out soon

Yeah seriously! The non removable battery is just a bad design flaw and I can't wait until Paranoid Android releases their newest builds. Too bad CM says they aren't ditching Android 4.3 for 4.4. Obviously they're ruining their own competition and PA is going to be WAAY ahead of them.

Galaxy S5 will be saddled with Touchwiz. Even the recent 'leaks' of what might be the new Touchwiz were pretty gawd-awful to me. It will be significantly more expensive than the Nexus 5 unlocked, and will be locked down hard on AT&T and Verizon. Bigger than 5" screen is a non-starter for me. N5 is just about perfect size for me. It will probably have a better camera app but the individual pixels on the sensor are going to be tiny, probably leading to fairly poor low light performance. S5 will probably have a larger battery, but I doubt they'll be getting 3000+ mAh. Even if it gets Snapdragon 805, I doubt it will perform a ton better than the N5 due to software and TW 'feature' overload.
Coming from the DNA, s3, and note 2, absolutely not. The Samsung 4.3 ota locked the s3/note 2 hard. All new phones will ship this way.

I just bought the nexus5 and i love it. It's stock android is amazing , and the screen colour is very natural.
So to the question ... will you nexus users upgrade to the upcoming S5 ? It looks like its going feature a screen bigger than 5'' and a 16mp camera.

Why is this a thread? Shouldn't this be in the samsung section of XDA, where I dare not venture?
megapixels don't matter by the way on a standard photo that 90% of people take, store, and share.
I have the S4 now and will be getting the n5 this week. The main reason i'm switching is because the galaxy series bootloaders are locked and no one has found a way to bypass them. I've been using safestrap but its not the same.
The pure Android experience is the way to go. Updates right when they are released, No bloatware, and a free to modify phone with no locks on it.
Nope! Nexus FTW

Same. Coming from a AT&T Galaxy S4 I can say this x100. Never again a Samsung product. The only S4 feature, and feature from the S5, is AMOLED, and for the S5 the 2K display. However the camera on the Nexus 5 is superior to the S4 I had, at least I get WAY better photos. I will never buy a Non-Nexus Android phone again. Although iPhone6 may tempt me.

agreed.
and you guys are all looking at this wrong. this will be a great device as long as you purchase the unlocked/google play edition. no bootloader crap. as far as firmware goes, that can be changed. my rooted S4, with twrp and everything else this nexus has, including a superb aosp-based rom and kernel, was a thing of beauty. i expect some big power and solid support for the international and unlocked variants.
stop looking at carrier variants.
stop judging a device based on its shipped firmware.

technically, any device that is 1920x1080 is "2K"...only like 80 pixels shy of it. close enough. tech industry should refer to higher spec displays as 2.5K, really.
Might do, depends how it's built. I'm already a bit bored of my Nexus 5 and I think Android is getting to a point where the leaps in software are less and less. I've even gone back to stock and relocked my bootloader I'm that happy with stock Android!
We'll see once it's released but never say never...one thing is us UK users won't face the same issues as you carrier-branded US users will as our bootloaders will be easy to sort out so that's a moot point over here

The S4 Google Play edition was not available on Google Play for almost 3 months since it was released. I bought my AT&T Branded one in late May 2013, and I believe July the Google Edition came out. So they aren't out right away. Likewise you have to judge a device by it's shipped firmware, as in some cases like the AT&T Galaxy S4, with the inability to downgrade firmware versions, if you're device shipped with "AMF3" firmware or newer, you're stuck because Loki was patched and you cannot get around the locked bootloader. With no guarantee of a Google Play Edition version, there may be no way around it. As the International version (Such as the I-9505) are not available for sale to consumers directly in the US, some people haven no choice but to use the carrier branded versions.
This is my first nexus phone ... i came from a galaxy s4 and i also love the nexus5. It's a phone that you can pratically say you will get the update exactly when it released from google.
samsung sucks donkey **** :good:

there will be a GPE edition or at least an LTE-enabled unlocked variant. my comment on the shipped firmware and my entire response in general was aimed at this particular edition of the S5. if you're an international user or north american user with the unlocked LTE model, you wont be dealing with the bootloader issues and, again, the shipped OS wont matter. that can be changed.
I'm not interested in going back to Samsung devices. I spent too much time switching ROMs, trying to get an AOSP(ish) experience from my S3. There were always things that didn't work, and the battery life was sh*t as well. Since getting this phone I've stayed on the same ROM for ages, and it has no bugs. None. I don't have to waste my time any more. A 2k screen (even if it is AMOLED, which I love) and an extra gig of RAM isn't worth the trade-offs.

Ditch S4 over N5?

Hello, xda'ers!
I have a fairly simple question. S4 is my first smartphone and I love it. At first I hated it because of TW, but now I converted it to basically a GP edition with Danvdh's ROM. Very smooth, haven't seen any lag since the day I flashed it.
The only thing why I'm considering N5 is because of its future proofness. (SD800, A330 instead of S4's SD600 and A320). I consider myself between average and power user. I like to game here and there and so on.
-Non-removable battery
-No SD slot
-Smaller battery
-Weaker camera
+Way better specs
+Constant updates straight from Google
+Ability to flash Android L and better dev support (i guess)
It all comes down to this: I want N5 because of better specs, updates, dev support and that's it. I've read many articles on these both devices and haven't clearly decided yet, because most of them go for N5 even with all the cons I mentioned. For me, battery life and SD slot (if it's 16GB version) is the most important.
How many of you guys have ditched S4 over the N5? Could you please share your experience and whether if you regret it?
The specs aren't that much better. There's kind of half a generation between them. The One plus would be a more logical step up
Also we only have 9 months left of official updates on the N5. Not sure what you mean by "constant updates". It doesn't get constant updates. It gets fast updates. But not constant. It only gets the minor updates. E.g it got 4.4.2, 4.4.3, 4.4.4. It got nothing in between
It has good developer support but after 9 months when no one is officially updating the official drivers, its going to be like any other unsupported device.

I have an opportunity to sell my S4. I'd rather go with OnePlus, but I can't get the invite.
What was your previous phone before N5?
Would you recommend me N5 over S4?

I cannot recommend any phone over any other phone to some one else as the things I like about it are completely subjective buy I will say for me, I would definitely not want an S4 and would prefer the N5

Go to the s4, i337, general forum and look for index,, all things at&t........... Read that carefully. It'll give you a good indication what you can and can not do with the s4. If you like custom roms and like to mess around with your phone the n5 is a better choice. The s4 has a locked bootloader and you can only use safestrap as a recovery

Ask someone who has a N5 if you can try it for a minute
Yep the galaxy nexus is a great example Google doesn't support it so roms aren't as stable and my nexus 5 will be the same way although the nexus 5 will be a lot less laggy

My friend has an S4 (non-root). I would mess with it from time to time, it seems like a pretty good device, even if it is stock, so I wouldn't consider the N5 to be that big of an upgrade, concidering your S4 is rooted/bootunlocked (not sure how the dev support is over there though).
For all your conS on the N5; battery life, non removable battery, no SD slot, ect, try to think logically, lol. Eg. Look at battery life threads for the N5 and compare them to YOUR daily usage. See if 16/32gb storage would be enough for all YOUR needs. Ect ect.
For your pro, haha. The updates. The N5 is pretty old in technology terms, so who knows how many updates we'll see after L release. I would think the dev support for this phone would last for some time though.
Personally, I would wait a bit to see if something else catches your eye, or if the N5 price drops.
Tl;dr: Weigh the pros vs Con's with YOUR usage.

It seems like cons weighs more than pros, at least for me. Well, I might wait for the Nexus 6, but since I live in EU, the price will be super high (instead of $350, it will cost at least $500 in where I live) I have a chance to sell my S4 for 300 euros right now, and brand new N5 (16gb) costs from 277 here.

-Non-removable battery -do you even need that(get a juice battery pack and done)?
-No SD slot -32Gb will be fine how much can you put into a phone?
-Smaller battery -yes,but with custom per-app profiles
-Weaker camera -i like it,really fine pictures (my opinion)
+Way better specs -idk what to say here...i'm really pleased with the N5 in terms of gaming, smooth, stability.
+Constant updates straight from Google -for a long time
+Ability to flash Android L and better dev support (i guess) -there is already Android L developer preview
I had iphone before and Nexus was the only android phone that made me ditch the iOS for Android.Had a samsung for a few weeks(hate it) then tryed the Nexus and love it!
Go into a store and try the phone before buy.Idk what to say against S4 didn't used it for long time to give an opinion.

Not constant. Only versioned updates. We don't get every fix when it is ready. Only when the version changes 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 for example.
Not for a long time. 18 months update cycle. Already 50% through that.
I had S2,S3,S4 and must say all of this phones where very good (all rooted and on custom roms ). Them my wife got a present and its was a brand new nexus 5. To shorten my story> From that moment that I powered on nexus 5 I never took S4 in my hand ever again. Feels faster, more manly (i have black one), and battery is better or same as S4 + much more fun coz its much easy-er to go from one custom rom to another and it doesn't have that KNOX security sh1t.
Cheers!

Though Google only guarantee they will support their devices for 18 months, the Nexus 4 is already 20 months old and it looks very much like Google are developing an L release for it. Hopefully this a sign that they will go beyond the 18 months for the more popular Nexus 5, though this is of course completely up to Google's generosity.
