Future Proof Android Phone with Budget Constraint(20k inr/$360) - General Topics

Well, I have been using LG Optimus One P500, currently running on CM7.2 nightly. It's been a great experience
but it's became really an old device(although unofficial CM9 can be run on this but buggy, very much buggy and with
laggy cam, problematic tethering and no youtube HQ).
So I am looking for a mid range android which is future proof for a few years. Even if it can't get the official update, it should run custom roms of upcoming Android versions properly.
So what should be approximate specs? I am thinking of Dual or really Powerful Single Core,512mb-1gb RAM and Bigger Than 3.2inches Display and at least 5mp Cam and Popularity(good Dev Following)
Some Phones I've sorted out. Feel free to add more options please(well, only international versions available in India).
Moto Defy Plus or XT535(heard something about locked Bootloader so not much custome rom?)
Sony Xperia Sola(matches my criteria but 1350mah Battery..eh? My P500 has 1500mah and lasts not so long)
Sony Xperia ARC S(single core..future proof?)
Galaxy Advanced(best among these but almost empties my pocket and old architecture CPU-U8500 for so much money)
Xperia P(Same as Galaxy Advanced but a little more pricier, still no AMOLED)
Galaxy S II (Over the budget, One year old..Probably I'll not go for it for the budget issue)
Thanks in Advanced.

I would say that Sony recently has really good update support for their products (all 2011 phones got ICS except xperia Play).
you may consider to get xperia P. it has 1gb RAM which I think an important factor to upgrade your OS (maybe more important than having powerful processor).
my second option is galaxy s II. don't go for mid-range phone from samsung (e.g galaxy advanced or gal ace 2).
samsung only gives update to their high-end products.

No phone is future proof. But if you wanted one that was going to get updates for at least a bit longer then the carriers or OEM issue them then I would get a nexus. You have to remember that unless an official update is released for an older device there will always be things theat may not work if a updated OS is ported from another device.

I would definitely recommend the Xperia P or if you decide you can swing it the Galaxy SII. The Xperia will receive long-term support and direct update via Sony and they are doing a lot to make sure firmware is readily accessible for developers. The Samsung should also continue to get relatively timely updates and if nothing else it has a huge dev community who will keep giving you access to the latest and greatest.
As mentioned nothing will be futureproof, but either of those two should keep you happy for some time to come.

I'm surprised no one's said it yet(hope I'm not missing something), but what about the Galaxy Nexus? It's US$349 from the Play Store right now. I'm unsure if you can purchase and ship it to India directly from the Play Store, but maybe you could find someone to help out?

Currently Nexus is not available in Indian Market and don't know why Google allowed only Play 'App' Store in India! Neither Music Nor Books unlike iTunes.
And if it would be available, it would be at a little higher..well quiet lot higher(for me..more than +5000rupees/$100) price range.
And Thank you guys, I am going for Galaxy S Advanced as no other phones offer so much features within this price range other than Xperia P. But why would I spend 2000 bucks extra when I am getting better spec(the AMOLED..pentile though). I hope all Galaxy S series will continue getting same attention of Devs as much its Grandfather S2(now S3) have been getting.
And I am pretty much convinced build quality wise and battery wise Samsung does a lot better than Sony.

Why don't you look at HTC One V or LG optimus L7? You can run custom roms on it as and when they become stable.

Even the One X isnt future proof for one year! How can a midrange phone be future proof for years? Get a samsung. Good dev support, so youll get roms and stuff. Good Luck

Jiayu G2 - Dual SIM, 1GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 4.0-inch IPS screen, ICS

Hi! I just ordered the Chinese smartphone Jiayu G2 from an online store. It is dual SIM, 1 GHZ MT6575 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB ROM, 4.0 IPS screen, dual cameras with 8.0 megapixel rear camera, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Look at the full specs here: http://www.chinaphonereview.com/jiayu-g2
I bought the phone because it has good specs and the price is only $169.99. I'm still waiting for it to be shipped though. I would like to know your opinions about this phone and if there are people who have tried this phone already. It would be nice to have some type of support for the Jiayu G2 in this forum.
Chinese phone usually aren't supported in this forum just because of the fact that most people here by brand name products. It looks like a great device based on specs. Give us your thoughts when you get it.

who knows, maybe it will be a good phone to start the experience with android, but here in italy you can take with 199 euros the excellent somy xperia u, that's a dual core android phone, that it's supposed to be followed by community.
i think that your won't be supported here, but with android you can do thousands things.
i hope you will enjoy your phone.
Sounds like a killer phone to me.

I received this phone from China last week, I am using it to run a business app, all is well, good screen and great to have more memory than on some other phones.
Testing Wifi printing, again no problems, only issue I have is with the Bluetooth and sending large data packets.
Another point I am not using this as a phone so can't comment on that.
But overall I am very impressed with the quality and service provided.

By the way, is your phone's firmware updated? There's an update for Jiayu G2's firmware at their official website www.ejiayu.com dated May 24, 2012. But you need to translate their website from Chinese to English with Google Translate.

Huawei is a more established Chinese brand, so it is much more expensive than the other Chinese phones. But I think Jiayu has a lot of potential reaching the international market because it has its own factory with a research and development department. It also has its own website with support for its products.

Android Version is 4.0.3

I'm not really sure. I think firmware and kernel are different things. Can someone help us here?
Did you update your phone already? Has your Kernel Version changed?
kernel and firmware are two different thing.
kernel is core component of the operating system (Android) that does the communication with the hardware.

I disagree. Jiayu G2 looks more like Galaxy SII. Meizu M9 costs around $260 from the link that you provided. It's $100 dollars more expensive than Jiayu G2. That's a big difference and Jiayu G2 has much better specs. So Jiayu G2 is clearly worth buying.
I just received my Jiayu G2 today. My initial impression of it is very good. The navigation is very smooth, no lags. The IPS screen is clear even when viewing at angles or at direct sunlight. Tried WiFi connection and it browses the internet fast. The camera is better than I expected it to be. Images captured were clear. The phone is certainly worth it. I'm loving my new phone already.

Buying a new smartphone

Hello everyone,
Can you offer me a good phone for the price of 450 USD? I've watched many reviews and the phones that caught my attention were Sony Xperia P, HTC One S...I'm also wondering about Xperia Arc S (which is cheaper), but you don't buy a new phone every month so I prefer something newer. So...I'm waiting for your advices and thanks in advance.
i would go with tge htc thats my opinion
You have a budget of $450? Go for the unlocked Gnex for $350, it has a big dev community and will get updates the fastest. In addition, JB with project butter has had outstanding results, similar in speed to how WP7 runs so smooth on single core 1ghz snapdragons.
if you don't mind the 5mp camera and on screen buttons, I say definitely get it

Sent from my U8150 using XDA
Yes, buy the HTC One S... you have a longer time fun with this device! And a really great support in this forum.
Before buying a new phone search for this:
1. Compatible with a stable version or Nightly version of CM9-10 or any other supported rom. (That means that is a device it’s currently developed.)
2. Listen what the device users say in the forums. (They have one they know their behavior problems)
3. Search for a recovery or a backup for the device OS. (You will be in guarantee so find a solution for any problem can succeed)
4. Look if the OS version is upper than 4.0 or recent 4.1.X (Gingerbread it's OK but it's going old each day, Jelly Bean seems a stable version)
5. Look the specs and the price. (Analyze the price with the specs it have)
Hope it was useful
Aahh, it's a tough decision. The One S has the more powerful CPU and the bigger screen, but I've read that the screen of the Xperia P is better (higher pixel density, plus that White Magic technology), the One S also lacks NFC (yeah, you can't do much with it now, but maybe in 2-3 years it will be useful). Tell me the pros and cons of the two.
Sorry for the stupid question but what's Gnex? Is it Galaxy Nexus and if it is, then where do I get it for $350 ?

Deciding between phones: future updates

Good evening,
So after having had a dumbphone for quite some time, it's showing the end of it's life. (I'm currently using a Samsung C3050 if you're interested.) I'm wanting to make the big jump to a smartphone, but I'm not yet that consent with choosing one. I do not know all the down and upsides to everything.
And neither do I have a lot of money, being a student and all. So far I managed to pick out some phones, which are:
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 i8160
Samsung Galaxy S Advance i9070
LG Optimus 2X Speed P990
Sony Xperia Sola
Because of the little money I will have now and in the foreseeable future, I want the device to run a long and healthy in the inside of my pants pocket. Therefore I would like to receive update for quite some time, so it doesn't become an old phone months after I bought it. With that I mean, I want updates, and currently I would like my phone to be running Jelly Bean.
And now comes the problem that I can't seem to wrap my head around. I want Jelly Bean, and the updates that come after, either updates from the manufacturer or updates from a third party. The Galaxy Ace for example has an update to ICS, whilst the S Advance seems to have not. Both look like great phones, but it feels unsure to me that either of those will receive further updates. The Galaxy Ace even seems to be fading out of the stores, so I'm afraid Samsung will lose interest in that device soon and not bring out updates any longer, and neither the community is very much active for both the Samsung phones I selected.
Then I stumbled across the LG Optimus 2x Speed P990, which is also a dual-core, something that the previous phones also have. The only downside I see to that phone is that is comes from 2011, and thus is getting a bit older and might not receive that much updates, or might not become capable of that many updates.
The the Xperia Sola. I just love the way it looks, but the battery can't be replaced, there is not even ICS yet, and there seems to be indication from Sony that there will be even thought of JB. With those two things together, it feels like a phone which can't hold very long. I also considered the little brother of this phone, the Xperia Miro which should be released next month, while the price might justify the low spec, but then there is still the update issue.
Of course there is room for other suggestions, as long as it's in the same price range and available in the EU. I plan on using it as an all-round device, browsing the internet, chatting on irc, listening to (FLAC) music, and perhaps a couple of videos to entertain myself. The reason I selected dual cores is solely because of I think they will last longer.
I do give my apologies for the many words I have written. Therefore let me make a TL;DR to apologize.
Many, many thanks in advance!
TL;DR Looking for relatively cheap Android phone with JB in the foreseeable future, and future update support from either the manufacturer or the community for at least the upcoming three years.
There are no guarantees with any of those. I would think the Sony is the most likely to see JB. Samsung is somewhat hit or miss with phones outside of their flagship devices. Sony actively works to help devs with a few of theirs. LG has a pretty bad rep when it comes to leaving certain phones in the dust as well, but the Optimus should be okay. That's just my input.
First off where are you located? If your in the US go with the Galaxy nexus for $350 straight from Google. You will get all the latest OS updates with that phone.
Also you did say how much you plan on spending.

I've also looked a bit at the Sola, but what I don't like there is the small and embed battery in the phone. I don't get why Sony would pack a smaller battery for a phone that asks more.

Me neither. But know that all Xperia phones from 2012 were designed in Sony Ericsson era. The true Sony phones will come next year.

Today I was looking at the Galaxy S Advance and the LG Prada. I would prefer the S Advance over the Prada since it was cheaper, but there is no sign of support for ICS yet, the Samsung forums are quiet about ICS for the S Advance. Will there be updates for the S Advance?
And then I took a peek at the LG Prada. It's not that I wanted to go for the brand, but the specifications are nice and there is ICS on it already. But then, it is again somewhat more expensive. Would the Prada be worth it?
Hmm, well I personally have never been a huge fan of LG phones. That, plus Samsung's hold on the smartphone market is significantly more prominent than LG's. So if you're planning on flashing any custom software in the future (especially useful if you're not planning to get another one for a while), I'd pick one of the Samsung phones. Whichever one was more popular.
I still say Sony is your best bet. Out of the companies you mentioned they have the best record of supplying updates.

Help choosing a phone..

Hi
I'm planning to move on from my SGS 2 to a newer model.. but I'm not able to make up my mind.
I'm interested in the 4G SGS 3 though I've been thinking about the next nexus phone from LG or the upcoming HTC One X+...
My current phone is working perfectly fine but I'm looking for a phone with more speed as well as with 4G/LTE..
Should I wait it out for early next year to have better choices or should I just go in for the SGS 3?
By the way, Samsung is my preferred manufacturer, followed by HTC.. I've no idea how LG phones are in terms of build quality, support, etc.
Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Thanks.. I like the SGS3 a lot, though it's just so difficult to decide on one phone...
By the way, here in Finland, we have a deal going on for the Galaxy Nexus, with the current price of 370€ (http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/s?s=1&q=51397+or+23156) and is valid until next Monday 21.10 and this seems to be the best deal in Finland at the moment. The standard price is ~450€ I think...
Is there any sense is getting the Galaxy Nexus considering there are the newer Nexus devices coming up? In particular HTC “J Butterfly” Nexus 5 (along with the LG Nexus as mentioned previously)?
Thanks again. Cheers...
Edit: Also, regarding the processor, I'm no expert but from the reviews and reports, I see there are the Tegra 3 processors (like the one in HTC One X+) or the Qualcomm 'snapdragon' processors or Exynos processors and similar... Which is the better one? Should I chose a device that comes with a specific processor if I want to have a speedy, fast, high end phone?
And of course, I would like a manufacturer that regularly updates the OS without major delays whenever a new Android is being released...
Well I have the nexus, and that price is very very high. Ofcourse it is new from store but I have my nexus for 275 euro's. Second hand but only 6 month's old. Great phone but if I were you, I should wait for the gs4. Depends on how fast you need a phone, considering the gs4 is coming out in march 2013. If you can't wait I should definately buy the HTC one X+ or the GS3.

Thanks a lot.
I'm not in a real hurry to get a new phone as my current SGS2 is working great (and there is a possibility that JB will arrive soon for the SGS2)... But I just wanted to kind of 'upgrade' from the SGS2 to a more powerful, newer phone... Hence my questions regarding should I really wait (though I understand it's a kind of silly question considering how many new devices keep popping up every month) or just go in for a model such as the SGS3 or HTC One X+ that's been proven to be a great phone....
Basically I can wait for the new one.. I'm looking at having a new one by March/April 2013.
If you can wait just wait Mate, I know your feelings so many new phones but can't choose a good one and every time there is coming a new one out.

Work phone with an exact requirement/feature
Background:
I have just bought a Motorola Defy Plus. The reason I purchased it was - I wanted a phone that could allow me t record work calls and Defy Plus seemed promising as it enjoys good amount of support in the developers here and it was like very cheap. Now when I see the work involved in rooting and flashing custom rom I find myself not too sure about my capability of managing the whole process. Even if I do manage the rooting and flashing the custom rom, I still do not have any definitive information if call recording will be possible

Given the above now I am exploring any other phones that will allow me to take care of this requirement of recording my calls incoming and outgoing , without speaker, in the stock straight out of the box condition. Besides this particular requirement my usage of the phone is very mundane - some voice calls, minimal texting , little bit of email, no games , minimal camera, once in a while a couple of minutes of music if ever.
So if any of you can give me a suggestion i.e. which phone and which app - if you have a working combo - which will solve my problem shall appreciate it very much.
Cheers
Wait, even if the nexus devices aren't to your liking they are going to drive the price of current devices down. I have the SGS3 but sources / docs for exynos processors are sketchy so support isn't stellar. TBH if support matters go with nexus although you'll have to sacrifice sd support.

SD support meaning expandable SD card support/feature?
Well.. that's another thing I'd like to have (I forgot to mention before)... I need a phone that will enable me expand my storage with an external SD card.

Yes.. missed this when checking out the HTC phones..
I think I'll wait it out or get the SGS 3 if I feel I'm in a hurry.

Me too
Forget the galaxy nexus it is getting a little bit old i decided to go ahead whit the s3 and i have no complaints..
Speed is awesome
Battery life gets me from 9am to 11pm depending on how you/i use it.
Camera is good ( there is noise in low light shots )
Build quality is the same as the s2 ..
I dont know why but i got a feeling that lg making a nexus will be a mess..

Galaxy S3
I would recommend the G3. You can wait for the next phone to come up but you'll find that there is always a new phone about to be launched so you can wait forever. I've recently transitioned to the g3 and enjoy it very much. Liked it a lot better once I rooted and put a JB rom on it.
I'd go with a sgs3

Personally I struggle to wait, but seriously we are talking days here and once the nexus is announced the prices of the current flagship devices is going to come down.

[Q] Atrix 4G or Atrix 2? Which one to buy?

I'm planning to buy the Atrix 4g or Atrix 2, They are 150$ and 190$ respectively on Amazon now. Good hardware specs at a low price. Hence the choice.
Which one should I go for? I know there are issues with gameloft games playing on qHD displays.
Are there hacks to play gameloft games like Nova 2 and Nova 3?
I prefer the Atrix 4G because of the larger internal memory and battery size, but also want my choice to support gameloft games.
Please suggest.
Tegrea 2 is a COMPLETE TOTAL POS .. so if you have to chose between those two go for the A2 that runs on OMAP4430 ..
but IMO ... look for a used S2 or something.. unlocked bootloader so there is no major problems with custom roms (for example there is not HDMI support in any custom rom for the A2) and official 4.1.2 JB .
btw .. battery size by itself means nothing .
I agree with the above.
To add to it I'll say don't waste your money on a Motorola device. They are highly overrated. And imo, the worst devices available.
Samsung gs2 for that price would be decent. Or check for used devices. Might find a nexus 4 for a little more.

Free is my favorite 4 letter word so if I got one for free I wouldn't complain. If I'm going to pay for a new phone, though, I don't want a carrier subsidized, locked down phone. I don't even care if it's locked but can be unlocked. If it's locked at the point of sale, it won't be sold to me.

Thanks for the replies, guys!
So, even for the low price (Atrix - 150$, Atrix 2 - 185$) I shouldn't take the plunge?
iamezio, scared to go for used ones (Samsung Galaxy S2). Not sure how the quality would be if buying online. Checked new ones on Amazon. It was showing 230$. Felt it is still expensive for a model which came 2 years back
To be honest if the bootloader were unlockble and the support didn't die with ICS it would be a great buy .. but right now i don't think it is .
you can look at something like a Galaxy Nexus too .. there is alot of phones in the price range that would do the job.
Thanks iamezio!
You are talking about the Galaxy Nexus S (single core) or the Galaxy Nexus I9250 (dual core). The first one is 210$ and the latter is 250$+
I'm looking for a good dual core mobile, which supports CM versions, plays gameloft games and priced between 175$ - 225$.
Sorry, if I'm asking for too much!

I think your looking in the wrong places.
Check http://celltraderonline.com or possibly even ebay.
While the devices will be used, the folks are very trustworthy, and most phones are in very good shape. It is where I would go to purchase a phone without hesitation. Might not be as easy as amazon, but you'll get a much better device for the money.
Thanks MotoMudder77.
Not sure if I'm allowed to post links. Found a few used S2 mobiles on Swappa (Couldn't find any on celltraderonline).
Please let me know if I can go for it. Thanks in advance.

Can I ask for 150$ - 155$?

There is no "Galaxy Nexus S" its just "nexus S " .. so obviously i meant the I9250
I would say buy it.. Development just started.. And this phone isn't gonna die any time soon.. Atleast as long as long as I am here.. Only thing I would say is buy a better battery as well.. The hdmi will be fixed.. Just a matter of time..
