Buying a new smartphone - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone,
Can you offer me a good phone for the price of 450 USD? I've watched many reviews and the phones that caught my attention were Sony Xperia P, HTC One S...I'm also wondering about Xperia Arc S (which is cheaper), but you don't buy a new phone every month so I prefer something newer. So...I'm waiting for your advices and thanks in advance.

i would go with tge htc thats my opinion

You have a budget of $450? Go for the unlocked Gnex for $350, it has a big dev community and will get updates the fastest. In addition, JB with project butter has had outstanding results, similar in speed to how WP7 runs so smooth on single core 1ghz snapdragons.
if you don't mind the 5mp camera and on screen buttons, I say definitely get it

The one s is the better of the two,but you should consider other options too.

Yes, buy the HTC One S... you have a longer time fun with this device! And a really great support in this forum.

Before buying a new phone search for this:
1. Compatible with a stable version or Nightly version of CM9-10 or any other supported rom. (That means that is a device it’s currently developed.)
2. Listen what the device users say in the forums. (They have one they know their behavior problems)
3. Search for a recovery or a backup for the device OS. (You will be in guarantee so find a solution for any problem can succeed)
4. Look if the OS version is upper than 4.0 or recent 4.1.X (Gingerbread it's OK but it's going old each day, Jelly Bean seems a stable version)
5. Look the specs and the price. (Analyze the price with the specs it have)
Hope it was useful

Aahh, it's a tough decision. The One S has the more powerful CPU and the bigger screen, but I've read that the screen of the Xperia P is better (higher pixel density, plus that White Magic technology), the One S also lacks NFC (yeah, you can't do much with it now, but maybe in 2-3 years it will be useful). Tell me the pros and cons of the two.
Sorry for the stupid question but what's Gnex? Is it Galaxy Nexus and if it is, then where do I get it for $350 ?

Galaxy nexus is an international GSM phone,if you have at least EDGE network (2G) it will work.
It is also very beautiful, and a Google Device,so you know you're in safe hands.

Of the aforementioned I like tha Galaxy Nexus most, but the problem is that it's not available in my country (Bulgaria) through Google Play. I should find a way to buy it.

Try a Samsung Shop as opposed to your network carrier. That way you're sure it's the sim unlocked international version.

Shipping is expensive for tech, but you could have them lie about the value on the forms.
My advice is to exhaust all local options first, if shipping proves cheaper, then go for it.

I found it in my country for $416 and I think it will be cheaper to buy it from here. And about the Galaxy Note 2 - I think it'll be much more expensive.

Agreed it might also be useful to mention where you live and in that price range the Nexus S is your best bet
Here in Canada you can pick up a GSM NS for 350 and a AWS NS for about 375 brand new
I suggest Nexus S as well.

Why are you buying internationally, when you can get it in here for near 17-18k.
because the india variant of nexus s i.e i9023 has S-LCD
whereas the i9020(international version) has Super-amoled screen
And it is available for 19-20k
and not 17-18k

Well, it would also sound nice if you will keep your money first and save up for a samsung galaxy s2. I think that would be a lot better than an instant gratification with a phone that is obviously not at par with the s2. I am saying that when you are comparing it side by side and I do not mean any other scheme with that statement. But it you really choose to get one now, that would be a great choice as well.
Why you don't check HTC

Future Proof Android Phone with Budget Constraint(20k inr/$360)

Well, I have been using LG Optimus One P500, currently running on CM7.2 nightly. It's been a great experience
but it's became really an old device(although unofficial CM9 can be run on this but buggy, very much buggy and with
laggy cam, problematic tethering and no youtube HQ).
So I am looking for a mid range android which is future proof for a few years. Even if it can't get the official update, it should run custom roms of upcoming Android versions properly.
So what should be approximate specs? I am thinking of Dual or really Powerful Single Core,512mb-1gb RAM and Bigger Than 3.2inches Display and at least 5mp Cam and Popularity(good Dev Following)
Some Phones I've sorted out. Feel free to add more options please(well, only international versions available in India).
Moto Defy Plus or XT535(heard something about locked Bootloader so not much custome rom?)
Sony Xperia Sola(matches my criteria but 1350mah Battery..eh? My P500 has 1500mah and lasts not so long)
Sony Xperia ARC S(single core..future proof?)
Galaxy Advanced(best among these but almost empties my pocket and old architecture CPU-U8500 for so much money)
Xperia P(Same as Galaxy Advanced but a little more pricier, still no AMOLED)
Galaxy S II (Over the budget, One year old..Probably I'll not go for it for the budget issue)
Thanks in Advanced.

I would say that Sony recently has really good update support for their products (all 2011 phones got ICS except xperia Play).
you may consider to get xperia P. it has 1gb RAM which I think an important factor to upgrade your OS (maybe more important than having powerful processor).
my second option is galaxy s II. don't go for mid-range phone from samsung (e.g galaxy advanced or gal ace 2).
samsung only gives update to their high-end products.
No phone is future proof. But if you wanted one that was going to get updates for at least a bit longer then the carriers or OEM issue them then I would get a nexus. You have to remember that unless an official update is released for an older device there will always be things theat may not work if a updated OS is ported from another device.

I would definitely recommend the Xperia P or if you decide you can swing it the Galaxy SII. The Xperia will receive long-term support and direct update via Sony and they are doing a lot to make sure firmware is readily accessible for developers. The Samsung should also continue to get relatively timely updates and if nothing else it has a huge dev community who will keep giving you access to the latest and greatest.
As mentioned nothing will be futureproof, but either of those two should keep you happy for some time to come.
I'm surprised no one's said it yet(hope I'm not missing something), but what about the Galaxy Nexus? It's US$349 from the Play Store right now. I'm unsure if you can purchase and ship it to India directly from the Play Store, but maybe you could find someone to help out?

Currently Nexus is not available in Indian Market and don't know why Google allowed only Play 'App' Store in India! Neither Music Nor Books unlike iTunes.
And if it would be available, it would be at a little higher..well quiet lot higher(for me..more than +5000rupees/$100) price range.
And Thank you guys, I am going for Galaxy S Advanced as no other phones offer so much features within this price range other than Xperia P. But why would I spend 2000 bucks extra when I am getting better spec(the AMOLED..pentile though). I hope all Galaxy S series will continue getting same attention of Devs as much its Grandfather S2(now S3) have been getting.
And I am pretty much convinced build quality wise and battery wise Samsung does a lot better than Sony.
Why don't you look at HTC One V or LG optimus L7? You can run custom roms on it as and when they become stable.

HTC One S Versions

Hi,
I recently bought (and returned to the store!) a brand new Black HTC One S, the phone was amazing but during a benchmark I noticed something disturbing, My 1S was the C2 version so it has the old S3 chipset with 220 GPU and 1.7GHZ CPU, I jet back to the store and ask them about it just to realize they have no idea that the 1S comes in 2 versions....BTW, I'm from Israel.
After talking to the tech guys at the store they told me they can't tell if the phone is the C2 version or not without installing a hardware info app.
Can anyone tell me please, is there a way to know what version the phone is just from looking at the box or from within the phone menu?
Is there a way to know that from the IMEI # ?
I got full refund and the option to upgrade to the 1X or S3 for that matter but I really can't decide. these phones are not cheap and I want to make the right decision.
One more thing, does anyone know what are the prices for the 1S and the 1X in Germany? I have a friend who's flying there tomorrow and can buy me one there...
Thanks a lot for your help and sorry for the looong post
Rotem.
model number of S4 version is z520e, the model number of S3 version (C2) is z560e.
This number is printed on the box.

Thanks a lot man, I will check it out tomorrow at the store I dealt with .
In case all 1S in Israel are S3 (or C2), Where can I get the S4 version online? Or should I just upgrade to the 1X for like $40 (though I don't really like it)...
Thanks!

As far as I can tell, all Germany (austria, swiss) One S are Z-520e (S4). Just be sure not to buy a branded device like T-Mob.DE, since it's ROM is full of bloatware in germ. language. The Z-560e (S3) version are common mostly in EE (east europe) countries. Just check the bottom of that white paper box for model 520e or 560e.

Let me get it straight, if I can get my hands on an S4 version of the One S I should get it instead of the One X ?
My dilemma is that I believe the One X will get all updates and will be more compatible with future apps and what not while the One S will not, plus I think in the near future all apps will take advantage of quad core cpu's so thats why I'm confused.
It may seem easy to chose but I really like the One S and don't really like the X (its not that bad it just doesn't look as good as the S)...
Anyway, Do you think I'd rather get the S4 instead the 1X ? (considering its $40 difference).
Thanks.

IMO the One S S4 has a better architecture, based on Krait. The process technology is also 28nm, compared to the Tegra 3's 40nm. But there won't be much of a difference during normal use, although S4 has 4G LTE.
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
Wouldn't trade my S4 ville for a one X or galaxy S3, only pros they have for me is a bit more development but the S4 ville already has some very good devs devving major ROMs like CM9, MIUI and AOKP and some nice Sense Roms like leedroid and trickdroid. Hopefully the C2 will catch up someday, root and custom recoveries as well as the first ROMs are just coming out in the last few weeks.
Germany has S3 as well
I have just bought an S3 by mistake in Switzerland. From what I read online, Germany and Switzerland also have mixed stocks of S3 and S4. I have read that Media Markt (http://www.mediamarkt.de/), a large retailer in Germany, has the S4. Their website mentions a 1.5 Ghz processor; if that's accurate, it's S4.
I'm pretty surprised to read that all of you rather have the S instead of the X...and then again it is the One S Forum so...
After visiting the store I first bought my 1S from It seems all they have is the S3 version and they are offering me (again) the 1X for an extra $40.
Does the 1X Tegra CPU is more powerful then the Krait CPU of the S4 ?
BTW, Is there a special reason you guys bought the One S and not X (beside it being more beautiful and smaller then the X) ? The reason I'm asking is because the X has better hardware (ie Quad Core, 4.7" HD Screen etc).
Thanks!

I bought it from Eline in Haifa, I returned it after like 6 days maybe.
Look, just print the One S page on their website that state that the CPU is 1.5Ghz then go to the store and tell them this is not true and that you would like to cancel everything or upgrade to something else, the printout is for your backup in a case they will change the website.

Yeah, the price now is around 2450 but no one can tell me for sure if they have the S4 or not...I think I will wait a little longer and maybe get the One X instead. I saw the white version and it looks pretty good, not close to the One S but still ok.
The one X got the 4.0.4 update and it is working a lot better now so...

Help choosing a phone..

Hi
I'm planning to move on from my SGS 2 to a newer model.. but I'm not able to make up my mind.
I'm interested in the 4G SGS 3 though I've been thinking about the next nexus phone from LG or the upcoming HTC One X+...
My current phone is working perfectly fine but I'm looking for a phone with more speed as well as with 4G/LTE..
Should I wait it out for early next year to have better choices or should I just go in for the SGS 3?
By the way, Samsung is my preferred manufacturer, followed by HTC.. I've no idea how LG phones are in terms of build quality, support, etc.
Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Thanks.. I like the SGS3 a lot, though it's just so difficult to decide on one phone...
By the way, here in Finland, we have a deal going on for the Galaxy Nexus, with the current price of 370€ (http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/s?s=1&q=51397+or+23156) and is valid until next Monday 21.10 and this seems to be the best deal in Finland at the moment. The standard price is ~450€ I think...
Is there any sense is getting the Galaxy Nexus considering there are the newer Nexus devices coming up? In particular HTC “J Butterfly” Nexus 5 (along with the LG Nexus as mentioned previously)?
Thanks again. Cheers...
Edit: Also, regarding the processor, I'm no expert but from the reviews and reports, I see there are the Tegra 3 processors (like the one in HTC One X+) or the Qualcomm 'snapdragon' processors or Exynos processors and similar... Which is the better one? Should I chose a device that comes with a specific processor if I want to have a speedy, fast, high end phone?
And of course, I would like a manufacturer that regularly updates the OS without major delays whenever a new Android is being released...
Well I have the nexus, and that price is very very high. Ofcourse it is new from store but I have my nexus for 275 euro's. Second hand but only 6 month's old. Great phone but if I were you, I should wait for the gs4. Depends on how fast you need a phone, considering the gs4 is coming out in march 2013. If you can't wait I should definately buy the HTC one X+ or the GS3.

Thanks a lot.
I'm not in a real hurry to get a new phone as my current SGS2 is working great (and there is a possibility that JB will arrive soon for the SGS2)... But I just wanted to kind of 'upgrade' from the SGS2 to a more powerful, newer phone... Hence my questions regarding should I really wait (though I understand it's a kind of silly question considering how many new devices keep popping up every month) or just go in for a model such as the SGS3 or HTC One X+ that's been proven to be a great phone....
Basically I can wait for the new one.. I'm looking at having a new one by March/April 2013.
If you can wait just wait Mate, I know your feelings so many new phones but can't choose a good one and every time there is coming a new one out.

Work phone with an exact requirement/feature
Background:
I have just bought a Motorola Defy Plus. The reason I purchased it was - I wanted a phone that could allow me t record work calls and Defy Plus seemed promising as it enjoys good amount of support in the developers here and it was like very cheap. Now when I see the work involved in rooting and flashing custom rom I find myself not too sure about my capability of managing the whole process. Even if I do manage the rooting and flashing the custom rom, I still do not have any definitive information if call recording will be possible
New search:
Given the above now I am exploring any other phones that will allow me to take care of this requirement of recording my calls incoming and outgoing , without speaker, in the stock straight out of the box condition. Besides this particular requirement my usage of the phone is very mundane - some voice calls, minimal texting , little bit of email, no games , minimal camera, once in a while a couple of minutes of music if ever.
So if any of you can give me a suggestion i.e. which phone and which app - if you have a working combo - which will solve my problem shall appreciate it very much.
Cheers
Wait, even if the nexus devices aren't to your liking they are going to drive the price of current devices down. I have the SGS3 but sources / docs for exynos processors are sketchy so support isn't stellar. TBH if support matters go with nexus although you'll have to sacrifice sd support.

SD support meaning expandable SD card support/feature?
Well.. that's another thing I'd like to have (I forgot to mention before)... I need a phone that will enable me expand my storage with an external SD card.

Yes.. missed this when checking out the HTC phones..
I think I'll wait it out or get the SGS 3 if I feel I'm in a hurry.

Me too
Forget the galaxy nexus it is getting a little bit old i decided to go ahead whit the s3 and i have no complaints..
Speed is awesome
Battery life gets me from 9am to 11pm depending on how you/i use it.
Camera is good ( there is noise in low light shots )
Build quality is the same as the s2 ..
I dont know why but i got a feeling that lg making a nexus will be a mess..

Galaxy S3
I would recommend the G3. You can wait for the next phone to come up but you'll find that there is always a new phone about to be launched so you can wait forever. I've recently transitioned to the g3 and enjoy it very much. Liked it a lot better once I rooted and put a JB rom on it.
I'd go with a sgs3

Personally I struggle to wait, but seriously we are talking days here and once the nexus is announced the prices of the current flagship devices is going to come down.

Samsung Galaxy S4 (Google Edition)

This will be the phone of my dreams. Will be getting it when it comes out. Will you? :good:

It's nice but the price is a nightmare.
Paying Samsung 650 to unlock and run AOSP on S4.. That's how I see it.
The Google edition samsung galaxy s4 seems a little garbage to me. Why does it have capactive buttons instead of onscreen buttons, hence ruining the "nexus" experience.
Since it has LTE I bet its the qualcomm snapdragon processor, which means aosp roms for snapdragon S4s will be quite stable but exynos one will still have problems.
Anyone wanting a "pure" stock experience better get a nexus 4 or nexus 10.
price is the only problem
I still wonder why onboard storage is so low. Yes, I understand that you can use a SD which can get pretty big, but wouldn't it be better to have more than just 16GB for developers?
Why didn't they just upgrade the damn nexus 4 with LTE. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

That would just be way too logical lol.
Anyway, I love my S4. I wanted the Nexus 4 beforehand. Missing LTE, LG (never had an LG) & something else kept from buying it. The Google S4 seems to the tip of the iceberg. Of course after all the preordering & the waiting, they release this lol. I want it. Love/hate lol :banghead:

Hopping it gets proper drivers from Samsung. Otherwise what's the point...
And agree pricing is too high.
The Google IO room fell really silent when pricing was announced.
Price is too high

Really?
It's cheaper than the regular S4 in the Netherlands...
Which is 889 USD.
For the 16GB edition.

High compared to what? If you look at what an unsubsidised, unlocked, off-contract S4 costs in the US, it's $629. The Google version is only $20 more, and that's probably not too bad considering that you should get OS version updates around the same time as the Nexus phones, not 6-12 months later.
If you're comparing the price to what you pay on a contract, of course it's more expensive. When you buy the phone on contract, the carrier pays part of the price because they know they can suck money out of you and you're contractually obliged to keep paying them. You win, but you also lose.
to everyone complaining about a 649 price tag, the GS4 of both variants (exynos and snapdragon) here in australia are like, 699 dollars outright unlocked at the cheapest....
I really don't think the price is that terrible. The S4 is a top of the line device that was not built with keeping the price down in mind. What's going to be stopping people though from just buying a regular S4 on contract or cheaper used then just waiting for this one to come out. Samsung is more than likely going to be providing the drivers therefore that could be of help to such AOSP roms like CM.
I wonder if it would be possible to just put the stock firmware on to carrier purchased S4 and receive updates straight from google that way. I think that should be possible considering the hardware is exactly the same.
everything is ok , just about the high price
Times they are a changin' folks. The days of carrier subsidized phones could be near. Soon we'll have a better feel for what the consumer will pay for a smartphone. This will put the hurt on phone manufacturers to set realistic price and profit margins.
i suspect the S4 Google Edition's initial unlocked price has more to do with taking advantage of bleeding edge, must have, first adopters. You know who you are. Knock yourselves out.
Uhh, $650 is about the price for an unsubsidized, unlocked premium phone. You Nexus folk are a little spoiled with Google selling you phones at wholesale price. GSM carriers would flip if Google sold the S4, wholesale.
It came as a big surprise when Google announced this, but it's an interesting move. I kinda wish they just upgraded the Nexus 4 though... LTE and more storage (or SD slot) and it would be the perfect phone.
like this comment: "All this means is that the modding community now has a stock Android build for the GS4.":silly:

native AOSP without voiding any warranties, with over the air updates that come earlier than any other S4 updates and no chance for bricking and probably a further 6 months or so of native (i.e. none/very few of the bugs) updates after samsung gives up on the S4
