It's nice but the price is a nightmare.
Paying Samsung 650 to unlock and run AOSP on S4.. That's how I see it.
The Google edition samsung galaxy s4 seems a little garbage to me. Why does it have capactive buttons instead of onscreen buttons, hence ruining the "nexus" experience.
Since it has LTE I bet its the qualcomm snapdragon processor, which means aosp roms for snapdragon S4s will be quite stable but exynos one will still have problems.
Anyone wanting a "pure" stock experience better get a nexus 4 or nexus 10.
price is the only problem
I still wonder why onboard storage is so low. Yes, I understand that you can use a SD which can get pretty big, but wouldn't it be better to have more than just 16GB for developers?
Why didn't they just upgrade the damn nexus 4 with LTE. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

That would just be way too logical lol.
Anyway, I love my S4. I wanted the Nexus 4 beforehand. Missing LTE, LG (never had an LG) & something else kept from buying it. The Google S4 seems to the tip of the iceberg. Of course after all the preordering & the waiting, they release this lol. I want it. Love/hate lol :banghead:

Hopping it gets proper drivers from Samsung. Otherwise what's the point...
And agree pricing is too high.
The Google IO room fell really silent when pricing was announced.

It's cheaper than the regular S4 in the Netherlands...
Which is 889 USD.

High compared to what? If you look at what an unsubsidised, unlocked, off-contract S4 costs in the US, it's $629. The Google version is only $20 more, and that's probably not too bad considering that you should get OS version updates around the same time as the Nexus phones, not 6-12 months later.
If you're comparing the price to what you pay on a contract, of course it's more expensive. When you buy the phone on contract, the carrier pays part of the price because they know they can suck money out of you and you're contractually obliged to keep paying them. You win, but you also lose.
to everyone complaining about a 649 price tag, the GS4 of both variants (exynos and snapdragon) here in australia are like, 699 dollars outright unlocked at the cheapest....
I really don't think the price is that terrible. The S4 is a top of the line device that was not built with keeping the price down in mind. What's going to be stopping people though from just buying a regular S4 on contract or cheaper used then just waiting for this one to come out. Samsung is more than likely going to be providing the drivers therefore that could be of help to such AOSP roms like CM.
I wonder if it would be possible to just put the stock firmware on to carrier purchased S4 and receive updates straight from google that way. I think that should be possible considering the hardware is exactly the same.
everything is ok , just about the high price
Times they are a changin' folks. The days of carrier subsidized phones could be near. Soon we'll have a better feel for what the consumer will pay for a smartphone. This will put the hurt on phone manufacturers to set realistic price and profit margins.
i suspect the S4 Google Edition's initial unlocked price has more to do with taking advantage of bleeding edge, must have, first adopters. You know who you are. Knock yourselves out.
Uhh, $650 is about the price for an unsubsidized, unlocked premium phone. You Nexus folk are a little spoiled with Google selling you phones at wholesale price. GSM carriers would flip if Google sold the S4, wholesale.
It came as a big surprise when Google announced this, but it's an interesting move. I kinda wish they just upgraded the Nexus 4 though... LTE and more storage (or SD slot) and it would be the perfect phone.
like this comment: "All this means is that the modding community now has a stock Android build for the GS4.":silly:

native AOSP without voiding any warranties, with over the air updates that come earlier than any other S4 updates and no chance for bricking and probably a further 6 months or so of native (i.e. none/very few of the bugs) updates after samsung gives up on the S4

I have never paid attention to how much the iPhones sell for when they first come out on ebay and such. I want to get galaxy s 2 or nexus when it comes out but I have a feeling I could get more money if I just use my contract for iPhone5 and sell it then buy the phone straight out. That way if a gem with art bands come out but at doesn't have a subsidized version I can buy one. If one does come to art I imagine I could still get warranty and insurance. Anyone try this? Think it is a good idea? Or just use upgrade for gs2 or nexus?

Probably just upgrade to the other phones, and saved time , the upgrade ain't going anywhere , and BTW iPhones have great value , I sold my iPhone 4 like 2 days ago for 400$ , while I can only sell my EVO 3d around 300$, apple products have great value
from my shooter rocking myns ROM
new iphones goes for like $900 specially if it's unlocked
used ones can go as high as $500
$400 is definitely the average price
Can't believe I'm saying this but I hope the iP5 is released so I can upgrade to it & re-sell it back to pay for my future Galaxy Note UK version.

Getting mine on sprint this Friday pre ordering
from my shooter rocking myns ROM
I predict that secondary market prices for iPhones are about to drop quite a bit and here's why. First, since Sprint is now an official carrier there will be more iPhones on the market, effectively driving prices down. Second, new version will be introduced to outside US markets much quicker this time, so oversees buyers are likely to opt for a short wait rather then paying a high premium for a US iPhone.
Hey guys,
Is there any reason I should hold out on buying this phone? I can get it from amazonwireless for 150$ and no tax.
Is there any other awesome android phones coming out on verizon this year? Or do you think the price will drop drastically soon (maybe to 99$?)

There might be some new phones, they just announced the Droid Razr HD and Droid Razr Maxx HD, they might be getting a nexus device but who knows. I doubt the price will drop until maybe next January. I say go for it. Its an awesome phone.
I see no need to hold out. Only thing coming to think about imo is the Razr HD/Maxx HD, but to me neither one is better than the S3

I noticed the new droids... my sister has a Droid 3. It sucks though, cause she's stuck on gingerbread and it's not a popular phone for customization. From what i read (And experienced), motorola is horrible for tweaking, while samsung is the best with htc in 2nd.
Since this phone has an unlocked bootloader now, and also has GSM radio, that's a big plus for me.
I just don't want this phone to fall another 50$ right after i buy it, especially with iphone 5s coming out soon competing with it.
Do you guys know if there's an even cheaper way to get it other than 150$?

@fr8cture return and buy it again! get your $50 back!
@rpn its probably not going to sink any further than $150 with a new contract for a while. The only reasons I can think of holding back is to wait for the 64GB model (which may or may not be sold by verizon)
Whatever you do, make sure you refuse to give up an unlimited data plan if you currently have one! Make sure the salesman knows its a deal breaker (even if its really not)

The new Motorola droids are identical to the s3 spec wise. In my opinion Motorola typically has better reception than I have had with the s3. But if you like to mod, there will definitely be a better following with the s3, and aftermarket accessories will be more widely available. The other upside to moto is the amazing battery life of the maxx.

Yep I'd be surprised if it came out before October 2013. The reason this was out so soon in my opinion is because the amount of carriers that got it. Everyone threw money as Samsung, so instead of only a few getting it like the GS2, pretty much everyone did this time around.
Also if you want a phone with customization do not buy a Motorola. They already confirmed that developer editions of these phones will be coming out for $500+ . Coming from a X2, no one could unlock that thing.
I think you can wait for a period of time.

What is there to even consider, this is totally a no-brainer... DO IT man!
S3 specs are lightyears away from any phones i foresee coming out in the next 3-4 months.
This is going to be THE phone until its replacement comes out. I would be amazed if we don't see a nexus by the end of the year, but if you are Verizon don't even bother looking at it. And I personally don't think it is worth waiting. The S3 has gotten awesome support and is such an awesome piece of hardware that you won't regret owning it!

So, I know that people are comparing the S3 to the S4 and why one should spend the extra money on a S4 if they don't already have an S3.
I'm not gonna argue against the fact that the S4 is a better, faster phone. However, as I'm nearing my upgrade date, I'm comparing the two phones to see which phone I would be happier with.
There are a few factors that have helped me make my decision. The most prevalent being the price. For the price of the S4 and what you get, the value is outstanding. Just looking at all of the tests and reviews comparing the two phones, the S4 is clearly the winner. But, how important is $100 to me when throwing it into a phone that edges out its still powerful predecessor? Let's face it. The S3 is still an awesome phone and has a lot of support and life left in it.
If I was comparing an S2 and S4, I would clearly go for the S4, or if the 3 only had 1gb of ram and slower processor.
As far as pixel density is concerned, I will not notice a difference. Same goes for 720p vs. 1080p, which may be the same as pixel density, but not a big issue for me.
The main reason I'm getting the 3 instead of the 4 is because I have other things to spend my money on and the 3 is still pretty awesome and a huge step up from my slow DX2.

Those are the exact reasons why ai upgraded to the S3 instead of the S4 when I upgraded from the Droid Bionic last month. By the way, this is definitely a solid phone and I haven't regretted my decision or wished that I had upgraded to the S4 once. Here's what I'm doing with the money that I ended up saving. I think the price difference is more than $100. Closer to $200... Correction, $130 if you bought either at Amazon ($149 vs $19).
You could flip a NIB s4 on Craigslist in a few hours, unless you live in a remote area.
You could make a listing NIB S4 for NIB s3+cash right now before you decide and see what offers you get

I think most people are missing my point. All I'm saying is that I want a better phone, not the best that's out there right now. I can compare it to buying a new car as opposed to buying used. While a new car looks shiny, one that is 1-2 years old will do what I need it to do. I simply cannot justify spending the extra to get something that will last probably not much longer than its predecessor. I also don't want to go to the extra trouble of trying to sell or trade the S4 when it won't net me that much in the end, IMHO.

How can you say that? The phone hardly just came out, the S3 was in a similar situation. We had a locked bootloader, limited recovery and other such. You seem to forget that or not know. I was in the IRC helping Adam get a device to help unlock it. Within 43 minutes of me posting a link to donate to get him a device, he had over $700. The next week we had an unlocked boot loader.
Don't be so pessimistic, think positive.

Price at £500, get x sales
Price at £300, get 2x sales + recognition as a reasonably pricing company, with a quality product, and a lot more factors.
It's business. That's why.
Why post this question? This is another useless thread.
Honestly the nexus 5's quality is on par with some of the higher end smartphones available right now. Admittingly the speakers and camera are not the best, but other than that it's a good phone. There's really no reason for most companies to jack up the price of their phones to $500-600. Just because it costs that much doesn't mean it's quality. If you look at how much it costs to build a nexus phone, vs a leading high end smartphone, you'll see there's not a lot of difference.
They want to put this phone in as many hands as they can. What do you think they make all that money from?
What do you mean? Google is barely charging a mark up. That's why its cheap. Not because they're using. Cheap parts

I think you're the only one here who believes this phone is cheap. Again as stated before, Google does not mark up their devices very much, thus creating a more affordable price. Samsung, HTC, Apple, everyone else will mark theirs up a lot more, but they also do this to pay the middle man (warehouses, retail stores, etc). Google sells their own hardware on their own website, so they're cutting out a lot of the middle men, thus keeping prices down.

i guess my expectations where just very high, and all we got was a mediocre phone that competes with early this year devices, gs4 and htc one etc...
Seems like people are really stuck on stats and fluff.
So if the N5 had aluminum, would that make it "premium"?
Does it need a 42MP camera, with 3.5GHz 8 core CPU, 4GB RAM, 4K display and 128GB ROM?
Why not make a smart phone that is truly smart, doesn't need bleeding edge stats to run AND be affordable. Oh, that's right Google has already done that with the Moto X and now N5.

You have had 15 phones in the past 39 months (a phone change every 2.6 months). I don't see why this is a big deal for you. If they did make a 'better phone' there would be an even better one released a couple months later. They are building a brand...normal people are starting to understand what a Nexus device is (and most can afford one). To put a whole new chipset in a phone requires substantially more money and carries more chances of bugs. Google is starting to influence hardware chip designs with Android's features and I am sure they have a plan to release a feature complete phone that is better than everything else in due time.
Stop complaining and enjoy your new toy.
Then the OEMS have no reason to complete other than custom skins. Like Microsoft and windows 8 tablet and phones

The Nexus `s are meant to serve as an example and showcase for other oem`s regarding how software should be like. That aside the Nexus 5 hardware is very very good compared to the price you pay
Can't wait till all the love or hate threads die down.

Hello! I am highly considering getting the S5 tomorrow, I'll be using the at&t next plan which will actually save me money.
However I am on a rooted and flashed MDL S4 which I realize is amazing, since it's not de-qfused.
AT&T said I can get the S5 for a cheaper plan and $50 down, or I could trade in my S4 for $115 credit to cover it all. Should I still keep my S4 and pay the $50 and sell it individually? I think they're going for roughly $250+ still right?
I could also keep the S4 as a backup phone, since it is fully flashable on MDL. Does anyone think the S5 will eventually be flashable and rootable? The reason I am highly considering getting it is for the upgraded camera, as I use it the most. I've already played with a display model in-store and it's feels phenomenonal over the S4 in various ways.
Opinions people?

With the current state of locked S4's, I wouldn't count on the AT&T S5 seeing AOSP ROMs for a while if at all. If you don't want AOSP again until a new phone, then sell the S4. Otherwise, you could keep it around.
For me personally I don't think you will see the S5 rooted . Rumor mills have been churning out all variations of the device will have a locked bootloader . With that being said its possible for root to be achieved but in light of what has been seen in terms of progress on the S4 I wouldn't place money on it . Hell I could be proven wrong simply by typing that but but I doubt it . I have previously owned the S3 and S4 , Both phones were rooted and I absolutely loved them both . As carrier bloatware continues (AT&T) , I want a device I control not the carrier not the manufacturer . For the average user the S5 will more than likely be a very well equipped phone for "their" needs . With that being said , Samsung's actions in terms of locking down software has swayed me to either move to a Nexus device direct from Google . Or even possibly send me in the direction of HTC , which as a company has recorded losses so eh not sure about betting on that horse either . All of this is strictly my two cents .

Exactly. Welcome to the new Samsung. Trading my S4 for a Nexus 5 as soon as possible. I really miss 180Mb roms and 45Mb gapps. AOSP on any new locked bl Sammy is a pipe dream at this point.

The next plan is a high interest rip off better off paying $199 on a 2 year contract. In one year on next at something like $28 a month you're paying around $336 a year. I agree with rebel Att can have their locked bootloaders.

S4 Purchase
Having new phone is always beneficial, especially if it is iPhone 4s ...well I think iPhone is good set , I think you should go 50$ deal
