Guys, I've been using android for to long and I've always wanted to try windows. The Lumia 1020 it's appealing to me but heir I but a phone I always want to know if there's a common trouble or anything I should be aware of. But the forums are empty about the Lumia... Either good or bad
Can someone tell me how's the phone so far? Is it worth to buy it?

I love it. Pictures and video are great. The OS is smooth and stable. You might not find all the apps you want but its not that bad. Great community of developers are making some very good third party apps where there is not official one. I don't have any real complaints, though I do miss not having Google+ and an official hangouts app.

It's decent. Not as good as my Xperia Z Ultra but it looks good and blacks are very good. Not bad in bright daylight. It's actually a very good phone. Been using it as my daily driver for a couple weeks now. No complaints.

Not trying to troll, I'm planning to shift from my Xperia to the 1020. What apps services do you think I'll miss the most based on your experience (eg xda app, Google services)

You can still do Google contacts and calendar just not Google+. There is a tapatalk app for forums. Instagram is coming out soon officially but there are some good 3rd party apps anyway. Flipboard is coming out soon too. There are some good freely integrated apps as well if you moved to freely from Google reader.
Don't really miss anything other than Google+. Everything else has an official app or 3rd party app at least for what I use.

update, almost a year later...
Just a quick update for you, of you are still wondering. Software updates have fixed the "yellow" camera problem, I have been shooting great pics for a few months now. Yes, you will miss a lot of apps you had in the Play store, but that will begin to change. Windows has opened itself up for free* to get more phone makers on board, and they are coming. Plus, Microsoft accepts Paypal, which Google play does not. So, increased market plus more opportunity for money = more apps. The Skype app is not as good as the Android one, and you can't log out & log back in with another username. But you will appreciate the lack of lag and/or freezing and the speed of the 1020, not to mention the amazing camera. Overall it's a very nice phone and I don't regret it for a second.
I'm a .Net/C# programmer and when I tried to go for my first smartphone, I decided to buy an iPhone. My operator didn't have the model I wanted so I gave up after being offered a Sony (Ericsson back then) with Android. Loved Android for a long time (still like it, my Nexus is still running), but as a Microsoft programmer I decided to study WP development and bought myself a Lumia 920. I liked it so much that now my girlfriend is with the 920 and I bought a 1020 for me.
Android and iOS still have the best apps, but at least for me, in my daily use, I don't miss pretty much nothing, we already have great apps. What any Android user will miss are the Google Apps. Anyway, Gmail, Calendar and Contacts are supported by default. Google Drive and Music have some 3rd party apps that you can use. Currently I'm only missing a good Hangouts client, but it's not a big gap.

Ok. I was an iphone user for years. Switched to HTC one for a change. Camera had the purple dim problem (google 4 it). Went to Lumia 1020. Worst decision ever. ITS NOT A PHONE. Its a camera. A great camera. As a phone the volume sucks. Maximum volume on the lumia is 40% on the iphone and on every other phone. You can not hear your caller in a noisy place. I talked to nokia support and they are talking nonsense. Too many users have the same problem. If you do not mind having headphones all the time, buy it.
You can also google for "low earpiece volume 1020. You will see the problem.
P.S. If you contact nokia/microsoft, they will answer you....... after 1 month with "please explain your problem" . Delaying because they do not have a solution.

I am using it from the day it was launched, very happy just got my denim developers update.
Did not have the blue/purple hue issue ever. Still takes great pic for me and great as a phone.
Previously Owned Devices:
• PCS Sprint CDMA PPC-6700/PPC6700 PDA / Windows Mobile 5
• Blackberry Curve 8300 / BB OS
• Nokia N900 / Symbian
• Motorola PHOTON 4G (MB855) / Android
• Nokia 1020 (RM-877) / Windows Phone 8.1
My Nokia 1020:
Pros:
• As reported, the camera is amazing. The best pictures come out in sunlight.
• The OS seems nice and smooth. I updated Windows Phone (as I do my desktop) without any issues
• NFC is cool, the text messaging, email IU, and tile desktop runs smooth
• Facebook runs nice
• Pandora runs nice
• Shazaam Runs OK (I haven’t’ been able to log in to my account though)
• Skype runs good
• Amazon Shopping runs good
•
Cons:
• (PROBLEM #1) AT&T seems to have placed a permanent lock on the internet sharing option. Although I pay for the service on T-Mobile, the phone refuses to recognize the authorization therefore telling you there is no internet sharing plan. Giant bummer for me….I wanted to tether my old Android
• No Wifi calling on T-Mobile (sucks because this will help me when I’m buildings with wifi and no GSM signal)
• No Amazon Music
• No Google Maps
• No Google Docs Editing (Gsheets in particular)
• No Google Chrome
• Apps are very scarce compared to Android

For those who spend a lot of time looking at a computer, and can't be bothered to look at their phone very often, Sand Studio has introduced AirDroid, an app that allows users to control their Android Phone from a computer via WiFi.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=WfNnQxpw7Uw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfXRhSIm-m0
The great thing about AirDroid is that it works - it's easy to start up, and functions flawlessly (in my experience). The interface is also very polished - mimicking a desktop launcher complete with moveable icons, a task bar, and controls that allow you to do just about anything.
One of the most impressive features is the ability to access SMS messages, manage them, and send messages right from a web browser. Users can also manage contacts, uninstall/backup apps (AirDroid will download your apps as apk files), browse files, access the Android Market, and manage music and ringtones, in addition to the ability to look at phone information from CPU status to battery level and beyond.
Best of all, AirDroid is completely free from the Android Market. With all the powerful features it offers, this app is certainly worth checking out.

This is without a doubt 'the best' app for controlling your phone from your browser. I've installed and played with many and this one tops the lot in my opinion.
It's clean, easy to use, great interface (both on the phone and PC).
Side note: This thread would probably be much better off in General Android Apps and Themes forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530. The app isn't specific an LG Optimus.

I'm a little hesitant to try out apps like this as well but they have nothing but good feedback on the market and a good following on both Facebook and Google+, as well as having their own website, so I was happy to give it ago.
@smackdownn Yeah I am with you on the whatsapp, this app is brilliant.
@Nucleotide & SpyderTracks Seriously? Whats the issue with privacy? Scared these devs are going to email or sms your gf while you are out? Either that or learn to hide your porn somewhere that is not your phone. I have said this before on so many occasions, when you were using a nokia/winmo/other NON android phone, they sneakily NEVER asked for permissions, but you installed apps that could pretty much do anything on your phone anyway
This app is by far the best solution I have tried in this regard, it just works and damn well too
@Cornelha
Lol.... I get what you're saying, but I think it's a little naive... the information we hold on smartphones these days compared to "our old nokias" means security is vital. After years of dodgy torrents, malware and hacked accounts, I've learnt to take it a bit more seriously, albeit probably to the extreme

I agree. I don't have anything I would call "sensitive data" on my phone but I do have a lot of contact information such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and other information which although not really sensitive, I still don't want other people to have - especially if I don't know about it. Not only that but apps can track your location, the buttons you press on your phone, numbers dialed, text messages sent, websites you visited, and the list goes on.
With that in mind I take caution when installing any app. I check for things like the amount of reviews on the market, the quality of the reviews (good vs. bad), does the developer have a website, a Facebook page with a good following, and so on.

Hi, i'm coming from 2 years of htc desire HD, I'm interested to buy a new phone, i was wainting for htc m7, but 8x is really beautifull, but i'm a little scared about wp8 give me good reasons to don't be scared and to buy 8x.
Its a smooth phone. Me and my wife wasted our upgrades on a pair of 8x. Missing a lot of basic functions and apps, which I could deal with, but then stopped receiving texts, missing calls and random rebooting. I'm now back to my Inc 2 until I can afford to buy a used phone. Very bitter about the whole deal

Reasons to want a 8x
1. Its a beautiful phone.
2. Very well made.
3. Screen is awesome.
4. Camera is up there with the 920, in my opinion.
5. WP8 is a great OS. Very fluid and just works.
6. iOS and Android users always moan about the Apps, I have been with WP since the beginning and have never had any problems. Some of the big names may be missing but the alternatives on WP are in my opinion better. I believe its quality over quantity.
7. Many moan about the live tiles being distracting. If they actually use a WP they would know that these tiles stop animating after two minutes of non use so not distracting at all.
Hope these small points help in your decision.

Maybe is better if you sell it, to recover some money.
Ease of use. Fluid system, reduced dependence.on apps, elegant design, OS quality (texts, emails, cloud integration) Xbox connectivity.
Now, flashing my old android several times, I was worried about that as well. But this phone, I honestly don't want to flash!
I was also worried about the lack of customization, but these live tiles and just the whole set up just seems to work!
There are some apps that you may miss, but outside of Alarm Clock Extreme, I have found I don't miss anything, or.found I don't ned it after all.
Easiest for me to say is that this phone just works, really well.

Design
I've been a long user of HTC ever since android. Before I loved the SE phones (in the time each phone came with its own OS)
It depends what you want to do with this phone, yet I found ALOT of problems with it and reverted to my old phone even though I like the phone physically less. (HTC Desire HD)
PRO:
* Very nice design, feels just right and light
* Pretty interface
* High quality
* Top notch technology
CONS:
* Connectivity is bad - all applications are "loading... loading..." you'll find yourself waiting alot (no issue with Wifi or 3G)
* Screens are often out of sync and reload...
* No USB drive (this means, you can't plug the phone in your car to listen to music)
* No decent navigation software
* The music application is confusing - where do you "play all" ?
* All screens sortof look the same - it might be a pro as all your social networks are seemlessly put together - yet it gets boring as all looks the same. It's not an engaging experience.
* No Sender or caller block
* No sync SMS/MMS with gmail
* No "Save MMS"
* Gmail application is rediculiously slow in incomplete
* The "cloud" and sync options seem scattered. There hasn't been a clear place where I could understand what is synced and how
* How much I would love to use the NFC - yet the software is a bunch of scatterbrainedness
* No settings button
* Personalisation is limited to changing the base color - which is from a picklist (not a colorwheel)
* Typing takes more effort as typing on the HTC Desire HD (more spelling mistakes - less well touch-prediction)
I really love how the phone feels in the hand and the design - I'm in love with it. But the software has been so annoying and breaking my flow I'm back to my old phone and selling (or hoping for improvements) this one.
Just thought I'd add my comments. I've been an Android fan for many years, but I really don't regret my choice of switching to the 8X.

It is the Metro look. I much prefer that everything looks the same than every app you download has it's own look. Just look at Android, a lot of apps doesn't really look good, weird icons, colors, etc.

I do agree that most of the cloud syncing is a bit weird and incomplete. The problem is that Google needs to realize that there's a potential on WP8 and develop apps for it.
Personally, overall, I love that phone. It's, without a doubt, the fastest phone I've ever used. Even if the specs are slower than a lot of high-end phones out there, the software is just so much faster.
At the and i bought it, it' ok, but wp8 is missing a lot of things, one of that when i go to music, there's no way to find a single song by typing the name of it, really?

yes, there are some basic elements missing, however, if you tap on the little squares at the top of each section, it brings up a way to quickly go to a section alphabetically. Hope that helps.
And don't give up on the phone whenever you have a problem, ask and there are a lot of people who can help you out!

To find a single song.
1. Go into media
2. Select music.
3. Swipe right to songs.
4. Then just press letter of song name.
I know its not the quickest, but also not that hard.

tempted to get an 8X as a potential replacement if/when my S3 suffers the SDS fate. the thing that ticks me off is the fact that the 8S has a micro SD slot and the 8X doesn't.
removable battery is not so bad but i do feel that 16gb isn't a whole lot for a phone nowadays....especially since my S3 has 16 + a 64gb sd card. i could live with 32gb if they every offered it.
EDIT : i have used WP 7.5 before in the past and i like the (formally known as "metro") UI and really like it because it was different to android and iOS at the time.

I hope they implement Treble. Might mean we're able to root without messing up the camera.

Can't we get the bugs squashed in this version before we move on to another one? Everybody wants the latest greatest as if it will fix everything when in reality all it does is introduce new bugs and then this whole merry-go-round of complaints starts all over again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, etc., etc.
I think we get the point...at least I wish somebody would!

I don't know what rock you have been under but 8 is very much out since a few days back, and OEMs absolutely receive early versions to start preparations.
Since Oreo was only released 4 days ago and probably been uploaded to AOSP only 3 days don't expect Oreo on other devices for like 2-3 months at least..

Treble is only to update faster. Messing with the camera quality when unlocking is a Sony thing
I'd rather have sony update the device with better software for the camera and speakers than the crappy whatever they are using right now. Sony's hardware works like...
... you know when you have a device hooked to your PC and it basically works, but you can't use 100% of its potential because you're using Windows drivers and not the Device's proper drivers...
Well that's how Sony's "anything" works.

I would say they are rather fast with updates now.
The reason for that is they cutting the costs policy which means they removed so many features / functiones we had in the past to cut the costs that it is almost ugly, stock Android...
Then they does not need to spend money on adopting all these features/functions to newer versions, so we paid them the money and not receiving what we paid for. Note this policy to cut the costs on software continue and we should expect even more features to be removed in time. Instead, they will provide useless 3D scanner, but I wonder what will be the number of new features Sony (and not Google) will provide versus the ones being removed. So far they removed more or less:
1. Small apps
2. Radio
3. Many good looking and useful widgets (including Album widget, previous Weather widget, camera widget, recent calls etc.)
4. Lock screen widgets
5. Most of dedicted apps for the camera (Burst, Info etc.) and even "+" button in camera app yahoo (even if you will download a Sony camera dedicated app from Google Play like Horror and install it it will not be visible in the systm or camera app, they need to prevent you from using it as they know better what you want to use, not you!)
6. Useful battery graph (now you do not know for how long your device is actually running, most important is some blind prediction for how long it still will be running - of course made of crystal ball)
7. Xperia keyboard, now you have pathetic swift without the option to use old one
8. Messages, the good messaging app was taken away, now we have stupid google one, where even so simple information like telephone number is not easily visible for each message thread, you need to dig into options as this important information is of course hidden now. New feature is that now both app icon and app itself is ugly like h ell.
9. Contacts - see point above
10. Calendar - see point above
11. Double tap to wake - yes, it has been taken away as well blush
12. Screen recording
13. My Xperia service (to locate your device), well you can download any crapware from Google play right? Why do you need this? Why do you need this phone at all? You can buy any other that has these features.
14. Screen mirroring
15. MHL
16. DualShock 3 support
17. Stock Android live wallpapers

Absolutely right! TrackID service has been killed which annoys me as nothing works as well, they are pushing us to use Shazam but the comparison between the two apps shows that TrackID is far superior to Shazam. But, if you go to APKMirror website and search for Sony apps, you can find most of the things they have removed as stand-alone APK's and they are compatible up to Android Nougat.
I just purchased my XZ Premium, it is due for delivery tomorrow and I am still using my immaculate Z5 Premium, but if there are lots of Sony apps missing that I am used to using on my Z5 Premium, I may have to send it back or rather not upgrade to Oreo and get the apps off APKMirror for Nougat.
Dual Shock 3 support is gone on 8.0?
Mines working now on 7.1.1

Hi,
I've had similar concerns before buying my last X2, and xda community was really helpful to clarify a few things. I hope you can help me decide again, I will appreciate your input on the following topics:
1. I have read many times that the OS is killing background apps, therefore gmail, whats app, facebook and other notification do not get received. I have also seen many advices on how to solve it, but some people still have problems. What is your experience with these notifications?
2. In some reviews I have seen that camera support for external apps is limited. Have you tried using Open camera or CameraMx, or other camera apps – what is your experience?
3. I want to use Nova launcher – how well does it work on this device? Does it have any glitches?
4. Please comment on Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity – do you ever get any issues?
5. Please comment on mobile radio connectivity – did you get any problems with call quality? How well does the internet work 3G / 4G? Does anybody use it in Europe and can comment on this? What are the download / upload speeds that you get? I am in UK
6. How well does the GPS work? Do you have any issues with google maps and/or any other navigations?
7. With Mediapad X2 the data roaming was not working – if I have UK sim card and go abroad – mobile data does not work. I hope it does work with Note 10, doesn’t i?
8. After selecting English as a menu language – do you still get much Chinese left over in the OS?
9. Do you have any issues with google play and any other apps?
10. Does this phone have a notification light or a possibility to show notifications on the screen when the screen is off?
Many thanks for your help!

Hi,
I can only answer 2 questions, as I don't own the device, but looking into the specs, this phone does not have band 20, used by O2 and Vodafone here in the UK, so you will only get 3G+ speeds, Three UK and EE will get 4G+ speeds. Nova Launcher should run just fine, had Huawei/Honor CN models before and Nova launcher was running fine on them.
Still not decided in ordering one, I had the Vivo NEX before and that was just on the limit size wise for me, if you get it, let us know how do get along with it.
Have a good one.
Many thanks for your input. If you or anybody else will have any additional input on these topics please share it. If I will get the phone I will write my feedback as well, at the moment I am not sure what to get ...
1. Notifications work fine for me as long as I go into "settings -> apps" and then individually change the battery setting for each and every desired app. Going into phone manager alone and change app launch permissions is not enough.
3. Works as well as on any other phone I've had.
5. 3G/4G works as intended in bigger citys. In the countryside 4G will suffer and will not be available mostly. I'm in Sweden.
8. I don't see any chinese at all after setting it all up and disabling stuff I don't want.
9. No issues at all. Works just fine.
10. It has a notification light. and the possibility to turn on the screen when notifications arrive. The always on display they have is worthless and only shows time and battery.

Got my note 10 from Liaow to Ireland in about 4 days. Nfc payment in stores does not work. Tried everything. Safety net app keeps failing. Google does not play nice with Huawei either. No ability to wake device from screen off or lock screen like my previous Galaxy s8 plus. Google Assistant also will not recognize what's app contacts for voice texts. Google maps location history will not turn on either so it's not possible to share your ongoing location with friends and family. Great phone all the same just wish it played well with Google for the reasons mentioned above.

Many thanks for the input. After a lot of thinking I have decided to get Samsung galaxy S9+ instead of Note10. I bought from ebay (used but condition as new for 600£), phone is designed for UK market and still has 18 months of warranty. The main reasons which have driven me away from Honor was that water resistance, local warranty, headphone jack, better camera with OIS and no dust, etc. I also wanted a slightly smaller phone but this wasn't a major factor.
All the best for you Honor users!
PS I will still keep my Honor X2 for watching news at home etc.
1. I have read many times that the OS is killing background apps, therefore gmail, whats app, facebook and other notification do not get received. I have also seen many advices on how to solve it, but some people still have problems. What is your experience with these notifications?
It works fine, notifications are displayed
2. In some reviews I have seen that camera support for external apps is limited. Have you tried using Open camera or CameraMx, or other camera apps – what is your experience?
CameraMX and OpenCamera work but do not support all the features of the Note10 (example 60fps video)
3. I want to use Nova launcher – how well does it work on this device? Does it have any glitches?
Nova launcher works fine and the previous version (5.4) also supports forced scroll background)
4. Please comment on Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity – do you ever get any issues?
Never had problems (both 2.4 and 5.8). Excellent signal on both routers and drones
5. Please comment on mobile radio connectivity – did you get any problems with call quality? How well does the internet work 3G / 4G? Does anybody use it in Europe and can comment on this? What are the download / upload speeds that you get? I am in UK
Work well on the two 3G / 4G fronts and switch from one band to another fast
6. How well does the GPS work? Do you have any issues with google maps and/or any other navigations?
GPS is fast. Only problem (perhaps it depends on the CHINESE ROM) does not work the Google Maps history.
8. After selecting English as a menu language – do you still get much Chinese left over in the OS?
Italian version
9. Do you have any issues with google play and any other apps?
No problem with the Google APP and third-party APP
10. Does this phone have a notification light or a possibility to show notifications on the screen when the screen is off?
It should have it, but I do not use it so I can not answer with certainty
In conclusion it is an EXCELLENT phone, I would buy it again.
The only sore point ... Bootloader BLOCKED!

I've found notifications to be on the whole unreliable unless you go through the various steps to get notifications to come through plus locking the apps in the recent tasks windows (this last part was what worked for me).
Overall though, the experience is nowhere near as bad as the one I had on the Oppo Find X Chinese ROM.
I can also confirm the phone works fine in 4G with EE.
Any of you can play Netflix in HD (no modded apk version) ? It looks like someone can play Neflix only in SD with this device.
Thanks
Anyone know how to get Google assistent to work.
Every time i have set it up, it goes back to start where it tell me to allow it for use [emoji21]

Hi I have Note 10 and has many pluses and some minuses like all smartphones :
1.It is NOT killing apps make sure wifi is always on and mobile data is always on too and notifications are handled auto..
2.Just checked camera MX and works normally as it should
3.Why nova launcher ? u can change home in settings and have home screen style and you will have drawer ..
4.Perfect no issues at all
5.No absolutely no issues perfect quality if u call huawei to huawei u will hear person like is standing next to you ..
6.No gps issues at all all perfect maps all good but BEST app now is WAZE there are cameras warnings , crash warnings , police cars warnings
7.No problems if u enable data roaming all works .. but some sim cards u need to set up APN manually depends of your provider ..
8.No chinese you can remove all of them except app gallery and hi care but when u select your country it will switch to english or your language .
9.No issues with google play only issue with google pay..
10.Ys it has notification light it has always on display clock
Cons :
Problems with google pay - but contacted google chat and they told me to ask for call request and then call bank and make group call and google person will have to speak with bank person .. wil be doing it tomorrow .

once again, many thanks for such a detailed input, highly appreciate it. However as I mentioned in other thread I have decided to go with samsung s9+, mainly because it is waterproof, has UK warranty, also I was a little afraid seeing these posts with dust in camera. BTW - iris scanner is also a great thing when you want to unlock the phone with gloves on. On the other hand, damn I miss the big keyboard from Honor X2 ...
Anyway, there is no such thing as perfect phone - its always a compromise between different options. But thanks again for detailed review, I am sure it will be useful for other people

So I've been utilising Huawei cloud for the past 6 weeks, Please see my previous post 6 weeks deep.
Looking at the eco system and the easy sync of the kit its crazy, So i've logged into my Huawei tab & logged my wife in for
the experimental purpose to see how it syncs and well i'm not disappointed.
being able to see my devices, previous and being able to delete the back ups off that is class (obviously as i know longer need it)
but if i did i could restore. i also took advantage of the 50gb free initially when i got my handset, Not sure whether that's still on?
my wife is looking to upgrade & she will want it and its free she'll be all over it lol
features I've seen are the option to auto back up my gallery (takes away the need for google photos in my opinion) back up contacts/calendar/notepad/browser
and passwords, I would say Huawei notepad with the way it syncs is exactly the same to google keep. ALSO Find my phone is there to track your phone you need to go on to cloud.huawei.com
all in all Huawei cloud is a strong 10/10. Any thoughts
Yeah the Cloud was surprisingly good - I believe the offer is still on as I only started using it a week or two ago. Do wish I could back up my Gallery via Mobile Data (Three Unlimited Plan and don't have Home WiFi) Not sure if there's a way to override this?
Just be careful with multi device sync / sharing a cloud, it's brilliant until a pic accidentally goes across to a device you didn't want/expect #eggplant ... kidding!
Yeah it's good, looking for Huawei to really find a way to do something BETTER than Apple / Google as opposed to "just as good."

I found the cloud a really strong platform. Something that is defiantly worth the swap from GMS for.

I 100% aagree I find that Huawei are fairly priced on most products tbf, and the fact that most purchases come with a freebie!
First Huawei in my hands ever. 50gb cloud for free with P40 Pro. Much better sync and less tracking activities at the moment, mainly because of missing maps. I dont care about missing Google stuff, except voice recognition on my language. Even on android One device i use Microsoft services. Onedrive autoupload doesnt work here and its a must to be fixed! Price... around 700 Euro with Gt2 watch as a gift. Camera, Voice, Sound... no comment at all! Even without G$$gle the phone is the best of!
What i want to be updated, fixed or maded:
Microsoft services... some of them are dependant on google
Maps app
Voice recognition, Text to speech on many languages...
There own pay app connected to mobile providers

In the Uk I use Waze or the Tomtom app for the mapping. I've not had any issue with office apps so cannot help on that one sorry.
waze and google maps works out of the box except sync.... microsoft autoupload is broken in OneDrive...I have 1Tb prepaid. Office works like a charm.!When i mention maps... i mean their own map service. Their phones are used globaly, so the database will be filled very quickly.
