In Windows 7 it worked without installing drivers or editing setting, but windows 8 does not connect to it automatically.
what i have to do to get this to work?

Did you try installing HTC Sync? Also, when the phone is connected in tethering mode, open "device manager" on windows and find the phone (should be under USB devices or something like that). Then right click it and search for updated drivers.

Access mem card through USB connect

This must have been covered before but search does not seem to be working for me here.
I want to access the mem card in my Fuze (stock ROM) on my work PC but it needs to load a driver for the new USB device it detects. I do NOT want to install ActiveSync on the machine, only the driver that will allow the USB connection to work in Disk Drive mode.
Anyone know what file and where I could find it would allow this connection to work?
Installing applications is prohibited by company policy and installing ActiveSync would be detected. Installing a USB driver would not be.
Anyone?

What OS are you using? Windows 2000 and definitely XP and Vista are plug and play. I'm using XP and the driver is here:
c:\Windows\system32\drivers\USBSTOR.SYS
If that driver isn't on your system, have you tried using the "Found New Hardware" wizard to connect to microsoft to automatically download the driver for you?

XP. The driver is not found by the wizard. I have had this on other systems before.
It is installed during the ActiveSync install. If you uninstall ActiveSync the driver is left behind and will still function but corporate policy has gotten strict on unapproved installs and traces are always left behind even after uninstall.
I will look on my home device for the file and see if I can move it to my work PC and get it working.
Thanks.

no tethering windows Xp

just tried tethering my nexus s to my work desk top to be "off grid" but i'm having issues.
I cant for the life of me tether the NS to the computer (running windows xp -32bit).
i was able to do this fine on the n1, but no go on the nexus. the computer just doesn't recognize it.
I've down loaded the tetherxp.inf file, but when point the setupwizard to it, it can't find it.
wth??????
then i start doing to research and read that the NS tethering isn't supported by window xp?? just win7, win vista and linux???
is this true???
what have you guys been experiencing?

arg. just did that.
didn't help. oi!!!
still getting the "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software" pop up.
i'm giving up on this.
the tether function is "on" on the phone, but my comp doesn't recognize the connection in the network settings.
sucks as i'm trying this on a fresh XP os installed notebook. so i don't know what could be causing this... (yess all updates have been updated)...

no problemo
This definitely isn't working with Windows XP.
This worked fine with my Nexus One. I had to install tetherxp.inf for it to work.
With the Nexus S, I removed all devices, uninstalled the drivers and started from scratch. No go with either the tetherxp.inf file or the RAR file posted earlier in this thread.
I can't find any other documentation on the Net that shows that Nexus S can tether with Windows XP.
Has anyone gotten this to work?
try this...
go to the PDAnet website http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php download their software onto your computer(free), then follow the directions on the screen. it will install the latest drivers onto your computer. i had to do that with my work computer too.
Well, I did that and now I just have a copy of PDSNet on my machine
I still can't get XP to recognize my Nexus S. When I plug it in I still get the New Hardware box that asks to find software for USB Device.
What I did was to add entries to tetherxp.inf for Nexus S which matched the signatures in device manager after I connected my phone to xp and turned on usb tether. I then installed the driver from tetherxp.inf.
Bazinga.

Win7 Will Not Connect To Xoom

I just got a new Win7 Pc and now when I try to connect my Xoom to it it says Unknown MPT device. I tried installing the drivers to no avail. I didnt have this problem on XP. I am running stock ICS on my WiFi Xoom. Any ideas?
Where did you get these drivers from? Try the ones directly from Motorola.
You could drive removing the current drivers and SW. Try just using the device then runnign the moto install for those drivers. Make sure USB is enabled correctly on the tablet too. Is it charging from the usb connection? You could try a different port it shoudl charge regardless.

Xoom doesn't charge via USB..
I am using the drivers and software directly from Motorola. I have tried it with USB debugging on and off. I have tried switching it from MTP to PTP on the Xoom and still the same results.

Go into device manager and see what's up. Make sure xoom is plugged in beforehand. Right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager.
If there are no errors (!) to do with the xoom, then some form of driver is installed. Manually delete these by right-clicking on them.
Then take out xoom, and put it back in. Win7 should automatically find the MTP drivers.

[Q] Windows 8.1

Hey Guys,
I cant seem to be able to access the N5 as a media device on windows 8.1.. just wondering if anyone got it working?
I've tried searching around and tried a few things like trying to download MTP drivers from Nexus 7 but nothing seems to work.

Same for me.. Windows 7 here.
works fine on 8.1 here
Oddly enough, I have no issues on my Windows 8.1 Desktop but on my 8.1 laptop, it doesn't work at all. Both we're upgraded from 8.0, no fresh install. Both worked before. Obviously something more to it than just Windows 8.1
It shows "Google Nexus ADB Interface" even when I disabled USB Debugging.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

PC says it's the same like I have installed.
Plug the Nexus 5 into your computer with the USB cable.
Open Device Manager.
Find "Android Device" near the top and expand the node. Double click on "Android Composite ADB Interface".
In the properties window that pops up, uninstall and delete the current driver.
Unplug your Nexus 5 and plug it back in.

Try putting your phone back to usb debug mode and then from device manager uninstall the Google Nexus ADB Interface. Then at the top under actions click scan for hardware changes and try to install the driver again when it finds the device. I know i had to do this on mine.

Thanks, it helped halfways. It can't find drivers for Nexus 5 and MTP.
EDIT: Deactivated USB-Debugging and it worked! Thanks!
I´m looking for mass storage mode.
All I was able to do was to get working ADB mode and MTP mode. Totally easy....but whatever I do....no mass storage mode?!
Where did you read that? Google suppressed the mass storage mode with jb, since 'internal sdcard' is merely a folder of data partition mounted as a virtual vfat disk through fuse.
I can't imagine they suppressed a feature from android filesystem setup to introduce it back on a single flagship device.
And even if I'm not dev, every dev questioned about this said it's impossible with this filesystem setup. It would be only possible with a separate partition, (like on my sgs3) with external sdcard for example.
i have an original 8.1 and an win8 upgraded to 8.1...
i cant install it on both machines
tried with usb debugging on and off. i can see the device, but i cant install it. only adb drivers. but i want to use USB storage (MTP)
kinda embarassing: good old windows xp, running on a 10+ year old laptop performs perfectly fine-.-
Thanks for the help.. got the ADB installed but when in debugg mode MTP comes up but wont install drivers for it.. when debug is off MTP doesnt sho in device manager.. i just want to get MTP working

Can't see Nexus 5 folder - Windows 8

Hi, I've been trying to connect my rooted Nexus 5 to my laptop for a few hours now with no luck. It works for my desktop but it doesn't for my work laptop. Both machines recognize it as Google ADB interface in device manager but I can't see the folder on my laptop. I tried with and without USB debugging, MTP/PTP and I also installed SDK tools but none of them worked. When I try to uninstall the drivers, so I can reinstall them, it does the uninstall, I plug in the usb again and the device is there like the drivers were never uninstalled. I've attached a screenshot with the driver and the date. Any thoughts on what's causing the issue?

Uninstall all drivers for android devices (and make sure you choose the option to remove the files), reboot then plug it in, what does it do? Try the universal drivers?
Also try turning off USB debugging if you have it on.
If you look through the first link in my signature there's a thread on troubleshooting driver issues

I've checked that guide already as it is first to pop on google search. I uninstalled and removed software as you said and it installed Android ABD Interface drivers now. Which I imagine are the same but not device specific. Still not response from my phone though. I can see it under Devices and Printers as well but no folder pops. It works on Windows 7 at home and I tried it on a machine with Windows XP as well and it works fine.

Not sure then. Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47165389&postcount=3
If not then try asking in the driver thread.
Enable USB debugging mode if its not on. I usually turn on and off and then connect it to your PC.

OP wants to connect in MTP, not for adb I think lol. No need to turn it on, and on some devices I've had in the past it won't show up if you have it on :/
