512mb still enough for android today? - General Questions and Answers

I want to buy a new phone, looking at some dualcore models with mali 400 graphics, but only 512mb ram.
Do you guys think 512mb ram will still do the job in ics/jb when i want to game a bit? Mostly clash of clans, temple run and subway surfers.

This is pretty much the best way to sum this up. If you're just looking for an everyday experience - it is enough.

Depending on what frequencies your carrier uses, check out the Blu Life Play. There are two models; one does 850/1900 MHz, the other I think does 850/2100 MHz for 3G. It has 4GB of internal memory, however it takes a 64GB without issue and supports install apps (and app data!!!!) to external memory (like Gingerbread phones and before used to do). It's also dual SIM and does DC-HSPA+ if your carrier supports it.
It runs (almost) stock Android 4.2 and it's only like $215 USD without contract.

The cheap Huawei Y300 is also equiped with only 512MB RAM.
It's running games pretty good with apps like whatsapp and swiftkey in the background.
Of course you can forget multitasking with many apps running ... or opening a lot of sites in the browser.

512 mb is okay for Jellybean, but it definitely depends on the use case. The games you mentioned run fine as long as the screen is not HD. I ran NEO GEO games and Ridge Racer 3 on PS1 emulator and they ran fine on 512 mb RAM + A7 dual core at 1.3 ghz with Mali 400 GPU but can't have many apps running on background or many tabs open in brower.

ROM for gaming

Please help. Just purchase my i9020 . I play game a lot. Which rom would be d best for gaming.
Any information will be appreciated. Thx meter +1

i like using NScollab 1.0.xx it has the power of CM7 but toned down to look stock. usually updated every week or so. i have games and media mostly on my NS and it runs smooth even without over clock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959282
I would say stock coz it doesn't take up any memory like that of the custom roms. Just flash netarchy kernel to make it overclockable.

THX all, thx meters given
im currently running MIUI 1.4.22 and have 150 MB USED and 156 MB FREE, Total 306 MB , where the hell 206 MB if it has 512 MB , it is understandable if its total 450 MB - 480 Mb due to system read differently, but its only 306MB.
is there something wrong with my Nexus S i9020 ??
nope. some of the memory is being used by the android system and the android system only. meaning that it is locked and cant be used by any other application thats why it only shows a total of 306
Yeah I think so. If open apps will use some of those missing RAM o think.
Sent from my Nexus S
stock and netarchy kernel for me as well works great for those 3d games. put the CPU to ondemand at 1.2ghz and it will run amazing (stock 1.0ghz alone was amazing)
**keep in mind that the most graphic intense game i play is need for speed shift
NEXUS S RAM only 384MB
I prefer saying that Nexus S only had 384MB of RAM.
i can see that on my mem info of CM7 ROM only 345MB.
384 MB real , 345MB system read.
I can feel in true HD games, i used to use DeLL streak and playing Eternal Legacy HD, it cannot run while background apps running untill i kill all task and give me free RAM around 312MB . THe the game start perfectly.
On my Nexus S the game cannot run, just kick back to home screen, its like insufficient RAM ( it was not force closing ).
So i assume nexus S only has totally 512MB - 128MB = 384MB. CMIIW

that the game closes back to home screen has nothing to do with the hardware.
it only shows that the game, does not support 2.3.3 or/and the nexus S hummingbird CPU.
it kinda bug's me seeing how many stupid people are out there.that go like.
"hey the game doesn't work on me ****(any 2.3( updated from 2.2) phone,in this case nexus S,allot of users said this)it worked fine on my ****(any froyo 2.2 phone or snapdragon cpu)
i love NSCollab it's work for me real goooooood ^^'

Opinions On 1gb Ram Performance in Android?

So how yall liking 1gb of ram on your android devices? I wanna hear some opinions from you guys plus this is an interesting topic lol. I own an Acer Iconia A100. It has 1gb of Ram but 512mb is what's recognized in the OS. I personally think 1gb is fine for a tablet but I would love more lol as sometimes my background tasks get killed for no reason. And btw 512mb of ram is just horrible on android (I own a galaxy s n man ram is such a down side on that phone). So tell me ur opinions
P.S this thread is intended for people who have devices with 1gb ram. But your more than welcomed to post opinions if your device has less or more ram
Love it. Not really to much more to say.
Device - Razr.
On phones it's more than enough but tablets should have 2gb.

Meh, you can go overkill like I did.
My gaming rig has 32GB of RAM (it was a sale, 4x8GB, I couldn't resist), which is total overkill.
But I can keep like 10 million programs open.. amazing.

I own an Iconia A100 and it does in fact have 1GB of RAM, 512MB of it is used for the tegra graphics. My Nexus S has 512MB of RAM and it runs I've Cream Sandwich perfectly.
More RAM is always nice but thanks to Android being based on the great Linux, RAM goes further than you'd think.

512mb used for graphics is retarded in my opinion. The tegra gpu is super weak.

Well as long as your processor is fast enough.
I think the trick is to make a lighter and less demanding OS and not to play catch up with the ram and CPU speeds. Eventually a phone will be 10core, 10 gig ram etc lol I definitely don't think that is the way to go
Agreed, its comparable to the O.S. and what is running. You could have 2 gigs but have a hog of an O.S. and it will seem sluggish.

True lol but the real problem here is that the ram is shared all the time which means you have less accesable ram. For example my tablet has 1gb of ram but only 512mb is recognized cuz the rest is reserved for the gpu.

Dual channel ram? What does this actually mean for us

Okay so our phones apparently have dual channel ram honestly. Idk what this means for us Ik we have 512mb does this mean 2 512mb sticks actually adding up to 1gig or does it mean 2 256mb sharing processes also what does it do please any answers would be nice I moved from the sensation and I like this phone it seems faster than it or the evo 3d

Dual channel increases the max bandwidth of memory by using 2 channels instead of one, we probably have 2 256 mb chips, each one with his own channel.
It should help in bandwidth intensive scenarios (gaming for example)

Im an ITT graduate for computer forensics. In this age part of my learning was to forensically examine all smartphones as well since they are just as capable in hiding data as computers are. Dual channel means 2 channels of memory as opposed to one to increase bandwidth just as mentioned above. Part of the reason computers are getting faster and gaming smoother is because of increased RAM channels and video cards increasing in GPU Cores and memory lanes or channels, this applies to phones. I actually have one , LG Thrill 4G or AKA Optimus 3D and tested it with a benchmark against some of the newest devices the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 both with quad core processors and single channel RAM. My results are as follows:
Optimus 3D: 1856.4 Mbp/s
Galaxy S3: 821.66 Mbp/s
Note 2: 849.39 Mbp/s
As you can see the note and s3 have same memory architecture and practically tested the same the difference was probably in the amount of apps running in background. The LG tested more than double the speed and it only had about 270mb of free RAM at time of test as opposed to the 1300+ mb or 1.3gb or RAM free on note and galaxy. Faster RAM means more responsive gaming and smoother graphics. Now the processor of the thrill 4g is ages behind so its almost unfair to compare app launching and phone reboot to the other devices I have but even the processor difference the RAM tests speak for themselves. Devices in similar time as the Optimus wont even come close to gaming and video playback because the faster the memory the more you can process and more efficiently as well. I'm sure that there is a game or two out there that would run better on the LG than even some of today's phones its just a matter of searching and testing.
I am quite honestly puzzled at why that was the only phone with dual channel RAM, I would have expected today's quad core devices to utilize this architecture and result in much faster smoother running phones with astonishing overclocking results.
Thaaaaaaaaanks for this answer! !!
But I have a question .. in overclocking is that damage the CPU ??? and the same question about the tempreture?? and what the overclocking actually do ?? Why did not lg overclock thier phones ??
Thanks

[Q] 1GB vs 2GB RAM on Android 4.0

There has been a lot of internet buzz lately around new 2GB phones coming out, most specifically the LG Optimus LTE2 and the Galaxy S3. I am looking to get a new phone, but the one that has caught my eye is the Xperia GX with Sony's new CMOS sensor.
I was wondering, how is the performance of Android 4.0 with only 1GB RAM, and would the performance increase of 2GB be a significant enough difference to want one of the Korean phones? Does anyone with a current 1GB phone have any issues with performance?
I believe all of the above mentioned phones use the new Snapdragon S4 processor.
Thank you!
I think for now 2GB of RAM is a bit of a overkill, for now, unless you're running fifty apps at once. I think 1GB is plenty enough. I myself own a Galaxy Nexus and it has 1GB of RAM. It ran smoothly even with like a few apps running in the background. Really, if you wanted to run fifty apps in the background, it will kill your battery, so I guess thats the trade off with 2GB RAM.

I don't think has talking about a nexus phone, when buying let's say an HTC evo 4G lte or galaxy3. You see left with very little ram if they were both1GB. My LTEvo is left with only 200 to 150 mb's ram left, but that's with every app I have running. Still when I'm web surfing the web sites easily ready threw the 200 mb's & more so sometimes the browser closes on me all on it's to refresh the memory I'm guessing. So yes I believe the fact that we now use higher resolution screens meaning higher resolution slings & launchers not to mention games, imo we need more RAM, not an extra gig but at least 400 mb's free. That way the launcher on the evo doesn't have to refresh everytime *really about once a week* but the 2 GB's the galaxy had is overkill but at least you won't have any of the referring the RAM every one in a while. Also to be noted in every benchmark between the galaxy3 & ltevo, the evo win's, surprisingly even in the memory I/O! In antutu benchmark & in quadrant the gs3 scores about 4780 while the ltevo scores 5000 to 5300, I peonally scored 545x... So I don't know if SG3 isusing given 2 GB's of slower ram or LTEvo is using faster RAM but it still not bring enough, all in all I will change my LTEvo do to the RAM issue that can be fixed with a simple update.
It's android or it's Windows 7 ultimate?? LOL
1 GB is just perfect.
My pc has 2.13 GHz cpu single core and 2GB ram and runs windows 7, my brother's htc one x has 1.5 ghz quad core cpu and 1gb ram for run android 4.0!
that's incredible
Android does NOT need 2gb of ram. My Galaxy Nexus runs amazing on 1gb of ram, and my Xperia Play ran ICS pretty good and it only had 512mb of ram. Right now a phone having 2gb of ram is just a marketing gimick. I can't see any of the Android releases in the near future needing 2gb of ram to be smooth. In fact Jellybean runs smoother than ICS on the same hardware, so it's getting more efficient, not less.
1GB is GOOD & 2GB is ... :good:
In theory, 1GB of RAM is lots. But I have the HTC One X (North American version) which has 1GB of RAM, and it suffers from crippled multitasking (just search Google if interested). Nobody seems to know for sure, but the general consensus on the root cause is that the HTC Sense software is a RAM hog, and therefore HTC had to modify Android to aggressively kill background apps in order to ensure that Sense performs well. I suspect that had they installed 2GB of RAM, like the Samsung Galaxy S3, the multitasking issue would not have occurred.
I have since installed an unofficial alpha build of Cyanogenmod9 on my device and it multitasks like a dream. So if you're buying an Android phone without a whole lot of bloatware, like a Galaxy Nexus, 1GB should be a lot. But if you're eyeing the HTC One X, you may want to wait for a 2GB model to come out
in future you need 2gb of memory.....
many apps and games improvement in the future......now 1gb it's still enough but in the future??
The more the merrier.; )
2gb is just too much for android, 1gb already runs smoothly, hell even my galaxy s1 with 512mb can run ics smoothly (true story). i think they are trowing 2gb just for people to think it's gonna be faster and smoother but that isn't the case here, though it's not going to hurt if you go for 2gb, it is just that it wont make a real difference.
Confused, frustrated, and abandoning the platform if...
I can't find the bottleneck and get snappy performance.
I'm on a Galaxy Nexus on V. The problem is (and I'm really not looking for business advice - I'm spread too thin for major overhaul) I can't delete my SMS because, many times, it may be the ONLY reference we have for a discussion I had with a customer of what they need(ed), what I charged, when the job was completed. I realize this isn't ideal, but it's (for now) a reality.
I have a HUGE DB of SMS... over 5000. I don't install many apps... of course, I have my gmail account sync'd.
One of my slow-downs was using google-voice... however, even with it removed, it's choppy. Whether moving between home screens, loading my SMS, getting keyboard input on an SMS to respond (which sometimes takes 10 seconds to start recording keystrokes).
I know that if I deleted everything and only had a sparse amount of data (primarily SMS) it'd be faster. And for good reason... managing a DB of texts seems like a lot of data to organize. And that... I assume is controlled by RAM.
And before anyone jumps to conclusions, bare in mind, I own a tech company. There's nothing broken on the phone. It runs the same as EVERY android device I've owned. Pretty fast (generation specific) at first, then, slows down... by month 3, I dislike the phone.
Yes, each generation gets successively LESS painful -- but I have an EXTREMELY fast paced life. I always have 2-6 people waiting for my attention throughout the day... every second counts. And every delay is annoying.
Is this just fatally-flawed-android for you? Unable to deal with a large(ish) DB..? Is this a RAM issue? Is this energy saving issue? I'm currently waiting for the iPhone 5 for a larger screen. If it has one... I'm probably jumping ship. I've exhausted my attempts with android... if either RAM or JB 4.1 doesn't fix this... I give up. I need my messages.
Suggestions? Am I overlooking anything?
THanks
Well more RAM can't hurt you, but it really after all depends on the device you're getting. These days I reckon as long as it isn't below 1GB RAM for a mobile device, then it's ok. As a matter of fact that's great
If I may suggest a mobile device for you to have a good look at, this would be the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. It's google's flagship phone, it's great, mostly gets the new updates first and is very reliable and clean. It isn't hard to root at all also, and is very true to its core, with google supporting it more than any other device. I currently have a Nexus S, the one that came before it. It's great, but would really need a bump in speed, I can see myself getting a new phone in 6 months, maybe when google come out with a new mobile device.
cheers, and good luck on finding a new phone.
That IS the phone I have.
Thanks,
Truman
It sounds like you have the same problems as iphone users at http://michaelhyatt.com/speed-up-iphone.html in which case switching to iphone probably won't help.
You could use a free app to backup your texts, "sms to text" is one which could help and you can save all or selected texts to txt or csv formats which would also mean you could search quicker when needed or transfer backups to a pc.
It seems it is a smartphone issue as opposed to model specific, based on a lot of googling not my personal experience though, but backing up would allow you to access the data as needed on other platforms.

Why do androids need so much power?

I know there is a thread about this somewhere, but i wanted to ask this in our forum (rethorical question)
Why are companies making 4 core cpu and 2 gb ram phones, i mean with those spec are ridiculous, you could play 8 different android games at an instance or have 40 background apps
Our pico i a great example, it works on games flawlessly, i can't say what i can't do on it
I dont even know a 512mb ram <1ghz single core phone which would lag at multi tasking, web browsing, office, gaming 'n stuff
our pico got scorpion cpu which is good for multitasking
our device is best in its range

Only problem for me are flash videos or high bandwith videos.. for example watching sports streams.. 500-1000 kbps is OK, but over 1000 lags too much.. 2000 kbps videos in Sopcast won't even run.
So I would like to have some faster CPU/more RAM, but I still like this phone so I am not considering buying a new one yet..

I know, there is a reason why they make 2core CPU-s and I just pointed to one of the examples
I think prob is with android coding. You see wp8 you can't just have any lag with try as you might and ios and bb10 seem to run perfectly with their respective configuration. That is why I am sick of android and am going to buy a Nokia lumia 820 or iPhone 4.
