I am extremely disappointed that scrolling on the Note 3 isn't "buttery smooth" as claimed by many reviewers. I have found scrolling to be janky and jittery most of the time. It completely destroys the touch metaphor. I have posted some examples on YouTube. Unfortunately my camera isn't very good and doesn't shoot at a high enough frame-rate to show just how bad the problem really is:

This problem exists with all android device not just note 3.

Unfortunately i notice too, it's the thing i look first when using a new phone.
I'm too lazy to shoot a video and I only viewed the first of the videos you posted. In it, you played with the Play Store. At first launch I got the same effect you did because the app is background loading a ton of graphics; some are still loading as you're scrolling. After about 10 seconds the images are cached and moving up and down the page is smooth. My N2 behaves exactly the same way.
I hope you and all those so deathly miserable plan on returning their N3's.

I cannot return it, contrary to the UK's consumer protection legislation. For some reason, Phones4U believe that the UK legislation (14 day return policy) does not apply to the handsets it sells. Instead, I'm selling mine on Gumtree for £400 (which is £220 less than I bought it for). I should have known better and waited for a demo unit in the store so I could see how it performed instead of relying on reviews.
In regards to the Play Store video that you watched, that's an example of poorly implemented lazy loading. No other mobile platform on the market suffers from the same performance issue when executing lazy loaded listviews. Here's an example from another platform (I shot the video at 60FPS, unfortunately YouTube seems to have dropped the frame-rate when transcoding):

The above example is running on inferior hardware, yet it so much smoother and fluid. I understand that it's not exactly a like-for-like comparison, but it still leaves me dumbfounded that no-one at Samsung seem to care about user-experience.
You're comparing it with devices from other platforms. In that case, wouldn't it be more accurate to refer to android and Google in your comments instead of note3 and samsung ?

Just get the iphone 5 or 5s if a "buttery smooth" scrolling is your primary requirement. Im content with my note 3's scrolling and i came from an S3, i bought this phone to be a tool and to help me with everyday tasks. So the scrolling performance if its smooth or not isnt any of my concern.

I agree. ios is all about a pretty experience (not they they have succeeded with ios 7). Pretty is not necessarily a bad thing but that is the prime focus for Sir Ive et al. That said, it is still a little surprising that a processor of the power of SD800 isn't always smooth!

Me too. I can also survive if my Note 3 falls on the ground and breaks in five. Although, i might cry.
That's not the point. And the point is, this a brand new top of the line Android, that costed me 700€, and you have 3 years old iSomething with better scrolling and touch experience. It annoys me, but i can survive yeh.
Unfortunately i don't think there's an easy fix for this. I have used Android since 2009 and i haven't seen one without this "problem" and i have used all the Galaxy S line.

The phone is €700. The platform it runs on is free and open source (which has its advantages and disadvantages). I think you fell into the same boat as OP of confusing between the two. If it wasn't free, mind you, you'd be paying much more than 700€ as samsung would've transferred the cost licensing the OS to the end user (one of the many advantages). Android has a hundred more advantages over IOS, which you can easily Google, but I doubt you'll find "Android is more fluid than ios" listed as one of them, even in the most stingent android fan sites. Of course the overlay that samsung and other OEMs put on top of android doesn't help in that regard either.

Thanks for the recommendation. If you look at the videos in my original post, you will see that I already have an iPhone 5. But that's beside the point. I'd like to know why we are in a position where consumers are expected to choose between smoothness and low latency, OR features and functionality. I was expecting the Note 3 to deliver both, and I simply fail to accept they're mutually exclusive.
When the every day tasks are jittery and janky, the user experience becomes jarring (every day).

You can read this article, has some interesting insight as to why Android is not as smooth as say iOS is. I don't own this device yet, but I've been using the HTC One which is the smoothest android experience I've had to date. It's still not as smooth as my wife's iPhone but it's approaching it.

I'm not confused at all, and i agree with you about the advantages of Android. I'm perfectly aware of that, that's why i bought one, and i have had many others, instead of an iOS device.
I will say it again, i have bought a Note 3 that costs about the same as an iPhone in my country. And that's because i think the Note is way better for my needs!
But this isn't a fight to see what OS is better, or what phone, i don't want to go there at all. I don't care about that. I'm just talking about a specific issue that bothers me with my phone, and that i have experience in my 4+ years experience with Android.
Every one wants more and better, i'm no different. Apparently some ppl don't care about this issue, others don't even see it, but i do and i would like it to be a little better. Don't see what the problem is here.
Your suggestion is, i need to accept it because this how Android works? I should be satisfied with that, because this is a chronicle issue? C'mon now, i will never be satisfied with anything ever! I will always want more. That's my nature.
Ok, enough.

I think Android will never be at scrolling as IOS,for two reasons:
1-Its based on Java and thats one slow animal,I told this in this same forum when I first got my Note one almost 2 years ago,and recieved unconvincing answers.
2-While scrolling, IOS stops all and every background processing meanwhile Android keeps tens of them running .

I'm not the most informed, but I believe that Java has drastically improved in speed (JIT and I think you can use JNI). Also, 2 seems to be from Munn's piece (which is inaccurate).

I've never been an Apple 'fan boy', and the only Apple hardware I ever owned was iPhone 4. I bought it in October 2010 because at that time it had the best display on the market (retina). I've always been a big Google fan and always preferred their products (Chrome, Maps, Drive, etc.). A month ago I ported my phone number to a new carrier (Wind Mobile, Canada) with inexpensive unlimited plans. Wind's frequencies (AWS) are not supported by iPhone yet, so I had to buy a new Android phone (Galaxy Nexus). I was really excited to get Android as my experience with Google was excellent so far. I was very happy with iPhone 4 and iOS, and expected Android to be as good if not better than iOS. I rooted my Android right away and installed 4.1.1. Now I'm gonna share my observations:
Hardware: Galaxy Nexus looks and feels really cheap (like kid's toy): plastic is probably the cheapest Samsung was able to find. Touch screen sensitivity is as bad as it gets - often you have to tap 2-3 times to make it work. Hardly any competition to iPhone 4.
Software: buggy and underdeveloped. I can't believe Google actually seriously markets Android which looks and feels like beta version which requires lots of testing before final release. Some bugs are so outrageous, that I doubt if Google bothered to hire QA team at all: for example when I try so send SMS and use my phone book to enter a recipient's phone number, SMS fails cause a phone number entered is missing area code somehow. What the hell? I think it's a bit over the top. Same apps on Android are not as functional, 'nice' and 'smooth' as on iOS. It looks like Android has lots of potential, but now is still in early stages of development. iOS is by far superior in any aspect at the moment: practically bug free and very user friendly.
Verdict: there are rumours that iPhone 5 will support AWS frequencies - if that's the case, I'm gonna dump Android without any regrets. What a shame, Google!

IMO,
Sony makes the best phones as build quality but they're not updating their phones at all, or really late, and they don't put the latest hardware in their phones. (yes other brands usually suck at build quality)
and there is nothing wrong with the Android software,
If Sony makes a Nexus device, that will be the best and the sexiest device out there.

Well you are running a custom Rom, of course it will be buggy... And unlike iOS that has been the exact same for how many years, android is a developing platform. It has been completely revamped in the last few years.
The custom rom is causing all of your troubles. I have had 3 android phones and I've never had a problem on stock firmware. My rooted Desire died when I clocked it to 2.5Ghz in freezer (motherboard failure), which was MY FAULT. My One V never failed on me and my G1 was live last time I looked at it.
As with build quality - you are blaming the OS? Samsung is plastic galore, why did you pick a galaxy nexus if you want a metal and glass machine? My phone is excellent build quality, cost me 280$ CAD with no contract, it is a middle of the range device - yet it is still an aluminum unibody, and I'm overclocking at 1.5Ghz.
Get a stock android device not made by Samsung and you've got your next iPhone.

If you look at Android then and now, you will see how much it has changed.
If you look at iOS then and now, you see that nothing has changed. They don't want to add more features which is why it seems so bug free.
Kinda like Olympic gymnastics, you have a higher potential score if you plan on doing more complex moves, but also a bigger chance of making a mistake. But if you choose simple, your potential score is low but you probably won't get many deductions. And guess what? Android is the more complex gymnast that will continue to learn more moves. When it makes a mistake, it trains via an update to fix it.

I was browsing the page for best smartphones to buy this year, and everywhere the first position is given to iPhone 5, even when Samsung galaxy s4 is not out yet, it occupies second position after iPhone 5, similarly in any other page I check rating iPhone 5 even though it is limited and less powerful than some others, it IS the FIRST, WHY?
Probably because you're looking at a limited sample based on data and opinion for year to date.

Because rating is not done by a respresentative sample and furthermore it is purely subjective and basically iOS concentrates on making the interface fast as possible and with the quickest response time which most not tech-savvy people define as "ZOMG ITS FAST SO ITS BEST PERFORMANCE!!!1ONE".
Search phones you're interested in on gsm arena, look at the detailed specifications there and read some reviews, not simply ratings.
Happy shopping
My advice to you is avoiding jumping into the fanboy bandwagons as either Apple nor Android fanboys are good.
If you haven't experienced with either one before,
+ spend some times in the stores such AT&T or Best Buy and play around with both iPhone and Android smart phones to get used to it
+ try to look for the features that you want and see which one gives you an edge.
+ do search the online comparison which is unbiased. If you read post that blindly claims "Android is far better" or "iPhone is just simply best" then ignore it since it's not a true review.
+ worst, if you can't come down to the decision, get you a smart phone, either one, iPhone or Android and give it a try for a year or two then switch, pls take note what you like best and worst using that phone. You are the only one able to find the BEST for you, not anyone else.
Note: phone with ton of features, unused features isn't a good phone either.

Truthfully, Apple products are amazing. Their market is full of fantastic apps created by talented developers. If you use a mac pc or laptop, have an iPad or iPod, they seamlessly integrate. However, I prefer Android because I love to customize my phone, and I enjoy an open source platform. So, nutshell, is iPhone 5 the best phone out there? My answer is it is one of the best. It's definitely nicer looking than most droid phones, but it's just a matter of preference!

So here are my question:
1.)Should I have bought the asus tab instead as it has a better display or does it not make that much of a difference.
2.) In how many years do you think the note will be outdated. i.e. Not be able to run any of the high end games?
3.) Is the Note or the Infinity better for gaming?
Please telI me I made the right choice.

I am also a student and I absolutely love my note 10.1. If I want to watch media on a high end display, then I don't turn to my tablet. I can't tell you the Note 10.1 is amazing for gaming, watching movies, etc. I can tell you it's amazing for getting things done. The spen, and apps such as lecture notes, have completely changed my life. I spend hours taking notes, doping assignments, and pulling together material from sources and texts. All of that is faster and easier on the Note. I'm at the point where I don't know what I'd do without the S-pen. It's saved me countless hours of rewriting notes, scanning them, searching for previous work, and editing the notes/work I have done.
Look, if you just want to watch videos and play games, there are better options.
If you are trying to get work done, then you want the note.

Yes you should wait in the PC Mobile Smartphone Tablet world their is always something new . But it is a constant redeveloping circle and the only decision you can make is based on when you want to buy and the price for a product that does what you want .

I made the wrong choice the first time around when I was in your position. Despite my initial feeling on the s-pen. I come to find it to be the greatest pointing device ive ever used. Im not an artist either. It provides mouse over function on the web and a degree of pointer precision that is to die for. Copy paste is a f'n breeze. Im also addicted to s-note.
But the real deal breaker for the asus was the ram. 2gb is what your going to want if your looking for extended usefull life. Some might disagree..but they are wrong...lol. plenty of speed tweaks eatup ram. Opera browser has some bad ass options that eat up ram but make the browser faster than any other ive used. So when you only got 1gb....you probably shy away from these options.
I didnt see the display difference. Sure I like how solid and cool the asus looks ans feels. Not a fan of the softer toyish artsy feel of the note 10.1. But IMO the note 10.1 is a better device with better longevity.

1.) No.
2.) Get an Xbox
3.) You said you use the Note for education and gaming, so even if Infinity might be better for gaming (no idea), Note >>> Infinity when it comes to education, so it definitely was the right choice

Here I Am Playing With My Lovely Note 10.1 And There They Are Still Waiting to Buy A Tablet.

I've been using the note for a few days now. I currently have asphalt 7, real racing 3, gta 3 and dead trigger installed and I must say the gaming performance is pretty awesome! No lag at all on any of these games. The graphics are pretty good as well. So I think the gaming is as good as it's gonna get on Android. Yeah I think I made the right choice.!:thumbup:

It doesn't matter what you buy today, in 3 months, something better faster and cheaper will be out. The main thing is that you are using the device now instead of just thinking about it. The Note can definitely help more with your education, which is a lot more likely to affect what devices you can afford in a few more years. You made a good decision. Now quit playing games and do your schoolwork!

Get that new Note out and take notes on what this guy says!
Seriously though, if you want to game, get a gaming console. While the Note 10.1 runs most mobile games quite well, I really only see these games for filling time between class, killing time while traveling or procrastinating some homework, not extended play time.
The Note will change your life as a student. I am so much more organized than I ever thought I could be with the Note. Having all my course work with me all the time and even past courses makes it easy to find what I need when I need it.
The transition in is different, just embrace it! Once you start to really use the Note to your advantage you'll wonder what you ever did without it.

I'm a student, too. I own the Note for about a week and it's great. The resolution is big enough for any practical purpose and 2 gigs of RAM are definitely better than one. There is an annoying little problem with making hardware keyboards work properly, but it hopefully is solvable. I also fell in love with the SPen almost instantly. Actually, now it seems to me that a tablet without a stylus isn't even half as useful as it could have had been.

3 things that I was a bit disappointed with:
1. Screen is not a flexible one like the concept shown a while ago (with side screen for notifications)
2. Screen not flexible can be compensated by a larger screen (6"?), but it's not much bigger.
3. Why does it have to look like a gs2? Are we going backwards in fashion?
Just some of my thoughts...
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
^^ Well, screen might can bendable. But how do you bend those battery, and other circuits inside?
Even if that is possible as a prototype in labs, I am sure such tech is not ready for mass production. Not to forget, the cost associated will be just too high.
how big is the screen?
Front facing speakers and a bigger screen would of been the icing on the cake for me. Still can't wait to buy one though (just sold my note 2)

The big question is how locked down the bootloader will be and on which models/ carriers. For example since im in canada my s4 does not have and never did have a locked bootloader. The last update on at&t has negated the ability to do anything other than root at this point.
If the note 3 is going that route I will spend my money elsewhere, I hope this is not the case however

Personally, that's one of the selling points for me. I had an S2 and loved it because it was a powerful little thing and it's design is, in my opinion, better than Samsung devices since then.
If I'd liked the look of any Samsung device since then, chances are I would've stayed with them instead of venturing towards a Sony and HTC.
Yeah the specs are great but I wouldn't even think about buying the Note 3 if it looked similar to previous iterations.

As you can see by my signature, I have the One and have been amazed by the improvements by simply having front facing speakers so I definitely agree that it would've been a great addition.
As it currently stands though, it's not really much of a set back.

I feel the Note 3 is a great upgrade from what I've read. I like that it has a envelope tracker. Saving you up to 30% battery life while connected to LTE.
Then you have a very fast processor the S800 running at 2.3ghz max. The 330 GPU that will play anything on the market and many high end games to come. I'm not a very big gamer on phones but I think I will be if I got the Note 3.
I also like the new S-pen features, though there is more optimizations then features. It's still great what Samsung has done. Like the scrapbook, it now will save the metadata of whatever you put in you're scrapbook making it much more useful. And the new floating windows that you can open by just drawing a box of whatever size you want the app to run in.
Battery life is said to have up to 4 more hours of on screen time. Of course it all depends on what is on you're screen but still, I find that a big improvement. But it's mainly due to the S800, it's optimized much better then I thought it would have been. Of course this is all based off of what I've read. But it sounds about right.
Furthermore, you get a much more powerful device. In a all around smaller and lighter package. Sadly the screen is pentile from what I've seen so far. But at 1920x1080 and a 5.68" display pentile should be passable. I've read it looks just as good or better then the Note 2's display. And reading full non mobile web pages without zooming in shouldn't be a problem. Yes you can do that with the Note 2 but only in landscape mode.
I would love to be able to upgrade. It's been keeping me up at night... Gratz to everyone that's able to get this wonderful device.

Since I still have the Note 1, the Note 3 is a welcomed upgrade for me.
I wish the desktop feeling has improved when connecting the Note to a FullHD TV. I guess I will buy the Snapdrogon 800 version, since the octa core version will not be as good supported by Mod development, even if the Octa Core might be faster.
Engadget's Hands-on Review
Two years ago, at a consumer electronics show in Berlin, Samsung took to the stage and unveiled the introduction to what is now a booming smartphone genre. The 5.3-inch monstrosity, called the Galaxy Note, has blossomed into one of the Korean manufacturer's biggest brands. Today the same company is unveiling the Galaxy Note 3, the second sequel in a series of supersized stylus-smitten smartphones, which is even taller, narrower and thinner than the first two of its kind. As expected, the new 5.7-inch Note not only utilizes a S-Pen but enhances its functionality and adds better hardware and components to ensure it's able to handle anything you can throw at it.

Just a quick comparison, between the 2 newest things out there so far, Gnote3 vs LG G2:
http://www.androidcentral.com/quick-comparison-lg-g2-versus-samsung-galaxy-note-3
.
Murray Winiata, a NZ blogger, got hold of a Note 3 and posted his opinions on his twitter page yesterday. Overall he is very positive about it and he is a demanding and informed reviewer.
Some of you may remember he wrote a really detailed review of the Note 1 on his blog and hopefully he will get around to doing the same for the Note 3. I think he sometimes posts here too.
I "upgraded" from a Nexus 4 to the Note 3 because on paper it sounded fantastic (especially the full HD screen). However, the performance of the device is extremely disappointing. There's a real disconnect between swiping the screen and the software responding. A perfect example of this is in the browser(s) scrolling department. I find that it's worse on Chrome that it is with the other browser. Sometimes in mobile rendered pages scrolling if fine. But most of the time, it's very jittery (it's not fluid and pixel perfect smooth). Very bad for the end-user experience.
Another example: the official Engadget app. Scrolling is extremely choppy on the Note 3. I have found that going into the Developer Mode options and turning on "Force GPU rendering" makes scrolling in Engadget very smooth (although it still stutters).
I understand that what I'm describing will be very subjective, and there'll be many "no lag here" type posts. Just writing about my experience with the Galaxy Note 3. Personally, I find it extremely disappointing. I will never buy another Samsung product.
I'm loving every part of my note 3 so far and find everything smooth and responsive. Battery life has been excellent and the screen is a wonder. But it's all opinions and there will never be a phone that is universally liked by every single person.
Hopefully things will improve for you and you start to enjoy using this wonderful device

Yes, that's typical to Samsung, even with 3GB of RAM it's lags more than devices with 2 GB of RAM and that bunch of bloatware makes it work slower and plus KNOX that you can't to restore if it's changes to 0x1 so it's means you will loose your warranty.
What can I say, Samsung is getting worse and worse, I have my first and the last Samsung phone, because with that their stupid policy I won't buy their phones, and I think they will lose their position some day.
Do you have the S800 or Exynos model?
Bummer. Instead of starting your own thread, could you add your experiences to the Buyer's Remorse thread?

Maybe you could try the iPhone 5S powered by the Samsung manufactured 64 bit chip.doh that's no good then
I have a nexus 4 and upgraded the missus to note 3 and after turning off the s stay s stuff that she would never use( s-pen functionality still left on) it runs like a dream so much so that I would give her my nexus in a flash if she wanted to swap. I'm assuming they mean "Smart Stay, Smart Pause" etc.
I own Sony xperia x ultra and I confirm that it is is much smoother than Note 3 even that has only 2 GO of RAM. But the note has a charm and other things that made a little lag just not important: sound quality, s planner, smart stay, camera quality. At the moment the Note is the best SMART PHONE on the market. ( I do own S4 and XZU). My dream device is Note 3 with IP67.

I checked out the Note 3 at an AT&T corporate store, and as I posted in one of my threads, it isn't very impressive. Note 1 feels much more premium compared to the Note 3.
There is something about Note 3 which screams "cheap toy!!" - maybe it's the build quality or the weight. Even the software isn't as snappy as it should be. I had to press the "Return"/"Back" and the "Menu" button three or four times sometimes to get it to work. I was very disappointed to see all this mediocrity in a flagship Samsung phone in 2013.
The LG G2 is what we call snappy and in my opinion (and Techno Buffalo's), it is the best Android phone ever in terms of speed and responsiveness. If the LG G2 had a stylus, I would drop the plan to buy the Note 3 in a second. Playing with the Note 3 for about 20 mins unexpectedly made me wonder if it was an upgrade at all over my Note 1, let alone a Note 2, and that's disappointing.
