Why you should root your Note 3 - Galaxy Note 3 General

To know: You'll lost your warranty if you Root your device. Take that in account before Rooting, because Your KNOX WARRANTY VOID will be set to 0x1!! Think TWICE before rooting.
There are several reasons.
1st, because is a 5 minutes step and you're not gonna lose any data on your Phone rooting.
You can find a great guide on how to root the Note 3 in GalaxyNote3Root.com
2nd, because you'll be able to install great apps like:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Titanium Backup
Greenify
GMD GestureControl
3rd, because you'll be able to remove all the bloatware that comes via Samsung and remove the apps you're not gonna use or services that are replaceable by your favorite apps (like Flipboard to Press, or Files to Root Explorer...).
And doing this you'll have a snappy device with more RAM available for you and less background services.
This is a great guide that shows what apps are safe to uninstall or freeze via Titanium Backup.
Nearly everything is freezable, I recommend you to make before anything a Nandroid Backup via CMW and then freeze the services and apps you think you're not gonna use, after a few days if everything is ok, you may uninstall all the services and apps without risk.
4th, because in a short future you're gonna be able to install amazing ROM's as paranoidAndroid and others..
Disclaimer: You're gonna lose your warranty following the present rooting method.

In other devices you should update without problems, only losing root.
Don't know for sure if Samsung will limit the updates in devices rooted or with the knox not in 0x0..

4th reason is irrelevant.

1st point is also incorrect.
On the note 3 you'll lose knox and the warranty, unless you know of a way ti reset the efuse?

and how can i determine my model number? still i don't know is it the number that i see at download mode?

Will you be able to un-root and reset the flash counter to 0 if you have to send your phone back to Samsung under warranty?

I wanted to point that any data was lost in the process, it's changed now.

I have my Note 2 rooted and use the apps you mention. However I am considering not rooting my Note 3 to allow ISIS to work and keep KNOX.

first of all thank you for your work i appreciate. just kidding when saying 4th reason is irrelevant, i understood what you mean there. but in your guide i think there should be a warning. yes in a short or long time developers may find a way about efuse thing but it may not be resetable. samsung may have designed it that it only can be set to 1 by hardware. so there maybe a solution like: developers may find a way to prevent efuse to be setted to 1 but can not reset it so devices already with efuse set to 1 may not be recoverable.

If you root and subsequently mess around with your /system partition, you may no longer be able to receive OTAs.
More specifically, you might receive them, but they may fail because they are usually patches and if they want to patch something that you've removed or altered, it's likely it would fail validation checks and abort the process.

Dave

If you decide to try this DO NOT! attempt perm root. Theres no telling what it will do to your device, It messes with the H-boot so a brick is possible.
I suggest to try "Temproot now"
There is a very limited possibility it will harm your device at all
Even so it will not be a brick. Worse Case you may need to RUU your device back to stock
This is great for those waiting for a perm root needing to use TiBu or Root Explorer ( Two very great apps i suggest you buy if you dont have them)
This is also good for those who would like to root but like to be able to remove the root

As long as you use the same SD card or copy the backups over to the new SD card, yes.
Edit: There have been some issues with TiBu and GB roms (I had an issue with my OG Droid and restoring apps when I went to CM 7). Some apps will not restore and no one can figure out why. However you can simply let Google sync your apps and then restore the missing ones.

[FEELER][Bounty]Root de la Vega Exynos Port

After a lot of testing remotely I haven't been able to crack the Exynos based Note 3. I currently use KNOX files within the system.img to call to a file on the sdcard as root to install SuperSU and supporting files. The Exynos doesn't seem to have KNOX, at least not yet. It does have a counter like the older Galaxy series had, except there is currently no way to reset the counter.
I am pretty confident that if I had the device I could get it rooted without increasing the counter. Borrowed, donated, gifted.. doesn't really matter.
I am trying to gauge the interest in doing this, are there even that many people on XDA with the Exynos based models?
I don't have a complete list of models that are Exynos based, but you can get a pretty good idea from this;
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/08/15...agon-800-variant-sm-n9005-specs-confirmation/
Post your model info if you have an Exynos based Note 3! Lets get a list started.
Great move.. This is mine in India.

The download mode doesn't show knox or binary counters even after rooting the device. I could only see my binary counter at 1, when I've looked into the triangle app.
Although it does not have KNOX status in download mode, after rooting using CF-Auto-Root make KNOX cannot be installed/run in the app. If i am not mistaken it said knox cannot register or something like that...

As stated in CF-Auto-Root Thread:
" You will need to flash a stock kernel and stock recovery to reset the binary status"
If someone who rooted with CF-Auto-Root were to flash stock kernel and stock recovery and then try to install knox I think that might give us an idea if the root procedure is reversible? What do you guys think?
Edit:
So I now understand that the Custom Binary Count does not revert to zero. Is that all we are missing to get the root full reversible?
Yes, only that part is missing..

I get your point mate so i also think maybe that can be true
but i still have jus to questions on my head which makes me to think about this:
1- some people have rooted their exynos devices. and after that when they flashed back the stock rom and make a factory reset, they still weren't able to launch anything about the Knox app. so if there is not any flag on efuse or somewhere else, how is that possible that the Knox app recognizes the previous root and just refuses to be launched?
2- ok for example now we say that there is really not any flag about knox on our devices. if Samsung updates the bootloader and puts a knox flag, what would happen? i mean if we just flash the new stock fw without root, will still knox recognize the previous root and put knox flag to 0x1 immediately when the new bootloader will be installed?
sorry for my complicated message, but i hope i could explain my questions
EDIT: @designgears on the poll did you voted as Hell No, just curious

Check out stevotdo's link. Have to do both because he made a rooted kernel image for us. Can't flash anything until the bootloader is unlocked.
He lays it out in a very easy and manageable way. The thing that takes the longest is emailing Huawei and getting the phones unlock code.
It took about 4-5 hours for them to reply to mine. Seems some people are not getting replies. My recommendation is to send an email late in the day. Check the time difference between where you are and China. If you send it when they are in the office you'll most likely get a response like I did.

I would advise against removing AT&T address book. When I removed it, my "Contacts" would still try to open AT&T address book and wont finish loading. Titanium backup had trouble restoring it and I had to do a factory reset. It would be helpful to have a list of bloatware apps that are safe to remove but I use this device as my main phone and I can't risk testing every app and breaking it.

Don't Install 5.1.1 YET!!! Understand it first

CAUTION with 5.1.1 UpdateG925PVPU2B0F7I've been spending some time reading T-mobiles issues with the update. This isn't a super new conversation, but is probably new to many Sprint users. The update appears have rollback protection, which effects both kernel and bootloader from what they are saying... Which I find slightly confusing since I didn't think that their was a locked bootloader on the US versions (maybe someone can assist with that)
Figured we could start the conversation early for Custom Root/Recovery/etc. users, so that we may save some of us some trouble with Soft/Hard brinks in the next week or so.
This is the thread I've been looking at.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s6-edge/general/psa-odin-5-1-1-t3136151
EDIT:
NO, the bootloader is not locked with the 5.1.1 update.
Rather, "Factory Reset Protection" (an Android thing - not a Samsung thing!) is now an option, which allows you to lock the bootloader yourself, protecting your device from someone installing a custom recovery, wiping your device and making it their own. It makes the device somewhat less valuable, and therefore (supposedly) less likely to be stolen.
The 5.1.1 upgrade looks to be a "permanent" upgrade, meaning we're not able to revert back to 5.0.2 kernels and recoveries.
So, I would suggest to sit tight with your current set up. In order to customize our devices we will need to wait for:
A) Root for 5.1.1
-Root has been achived: http://forum.xda-developers.com/spr...elopment/5-1-1-stock-of7-kernel-root-t3153396
B) Samsung to post the source code for the new kernel.
C) Custom Recovery
-Recovery has been achived:
Once we have the above, we can get back to modding our devices.
If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.
Interesting article, I remember several other older Samsung devices where you could not downgrade bootloaders and modems. IE Galaxy S3, note 3, s5. But there was still root, Roms and the ability to flash kernels. Hopefully there's no need to go back anyway. The kernel thing is something new so I may hold off on upgrading. Thanks for the info

This is my first Samsung, so the whole root recovery process was almost too smooth since I've been on the HTC side for 5 years. Unlocking bootloaders, S-off and requesting tokens to push.. Ugh, as must as I likes HTC and Sense, that sucked.
I think I'm holding off as well, untill Sac23/ Ram9200 might have spare time to look over the update first and make sense of it all and could at least get it to where V.2 is right now. But it sounds like the Kernel could be our hold up, without Hybridmax's current support.

Yea but based off of my years of experience and having Samsung devices, I'm pretty sure that someone will find a way moving forward, but going back probably won't happen. I too had an HTC evo years back lol and I couldn't stand the root process. I feel your pain. But yea it may be wise just to wait for a while on the update

I've been keeping up with the thread. Looks like T-Mobile got it worked out and looks like it didn't affect the international variant. US cellular just got it. Let's see what happens with them

That makes sense. Thank you for the confirmation. 5.1.1 is only a stock update for the time being

This.
Why do you feel you should ask if you should root your Note 5?

Well since once I root it will trip the Knox and wondering if it's worth it princeasi
Do you realize what you gain and what you lose from rooting? Make a list, weigh the pros and cons. Only you can make that decision.

Honestly as of now there isn't much to root for and this phone flies as is. I'm personally waiting to see what else our devs come up with. And I want to try Samsung Pay which you can't use if you root

Wha what ? :silly:
- AdAway
- Amplify
- Disable Application [ROOT]
- Greenify
- Wanam
- Xposed
- YouTubeAdAway
Those above apps are key for me to run on any Android phone.
And then ThrashROM 3.4 + Arty97 kernel 5.0 beta = fastest Android phone ever, with 6h Screen On time easily.

Do you think it's worth tripping Knox for root? For this phone, I dont, but some others might differ. what are your thoughts about it?

That's a lie. The stock carrier ROM is laggy compared to the Thrasher Lite ROM. Battery life is better i=with a custom ROM as well.

Probably because it is slimmed down and using arter kernel fixes the memory issue.
I'm currently on the same boat. My main reason for root is Greenify which turned my 3hr SOT on my OnePlus 2 to 4hs. I also hate, HATE the Samsung UI. If only there was a way to get the same Notification UI from stock Android and put it in the Galaxy Note. I am also conflicted on whether it's worth it to lose Samsung Pay.

I am in the same situation, only haven't used samsung pay once since getting the phone. Once I get my rebates that involve pay, it's rooted. Been trying to stay stock, just to see if I can and honestly, it's not too bad but not good enough to keep it this way. Resale value will most likely be less but so be it.

Well I rooted a few minutes after posting here. The new method does not trip Knox so it's cool. It's all thanks to the new beta SuperSU.

Guess I need to keep up with changes, last I knew couldn't root without flashing custom recovery, which trips knox. If you can root without tripping then no reason not to imo.

I haven't found a way either, not without flashing a custom recovery.
