[Q] A Terribly Confused Noob! - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello:
I am terribly confused and I hope that someone can help me to understand a few things! I am sorry if I don't understand all the links but they seem to go round and round. Right no I have no less that 27 tabs open trying to figure out the first step.
What am I doing? That much I hope I can explain! I am trying to install (if that is the correct word?) a recommended form of Ubuntu onto my rooted Transformer and I am using the Guide "Guide for SBK1 Install of [Win32/64][Dual Boot] Tubuntu for x3Maniac Thread" by TomTcom.
So, to my first question (probably the first of many): This guide was written to help "newcomers", of which I am definitely one. But, right under that statement comes the statement "The Tubuntu installer application will not install the updated kernels for SBK1 devices and the manual procedure in post #2 will tell you what you need to do." Does that mean I'm actually supposed to start at Post #2? But Post #2 assumes I already have "Tubuntu installation directories", which I don't have so I can't locate the two files. So far I have downloaded the file "tubuntu.img.tar.gz" and I have used 7z to create "tubuntu.img" but I can't open that and don't know what to do with it!
I am attempting to be a user of Ubuntu on my Transformer, not a developer - I take my hat off to all of you that have put your Transformers in harm's way developing the techniques and software that I want to use, but the instructions are terribly confusing for someone not familiar with all of the terms!
Any help would be most appreciated and I thank you in advance.
Sparky

I have responded in the main thread. Also, don't treat post 1 and 2 as steps 1 and 2. You need to complete post 1 stuff first.

ok, i'm having trouble with nvflash, I tried to flash a rom with clockwork, and then come to find out i didn't read enough and i wasn't supposed to use clockwork, so now i'm here. I've downloaded the nvflash_windows_20100500, and the nvflash_gtablet_2010110500, (I'm using windows 7) and i followed the directions from the nvflash link that say to extract the files into a "restore base" file, and after this i'm pretty much lost. I'm not sure what to do after this, can anyone help? I'm sorry for my newbness but i probably need step by step directions for a newb, thanks guys.

check out this thread , you will need the usb drivers for apx just search the threads and you will find the links to download and instructions.

P. S. -- BTW, this thing is about three layers of directories deep. When I pointed my updater to it I tried to get to the subdirectory where the .inf file is -- "USB".

Just rooted! A couple notes if you want to root

First off, this is where I got all the below info: (kudos and good job!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
Ok. So I just rooted my Thunderbolt using these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=552281&d=1301123842
This download:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=28H4U0QS
And this download (if windows 64 bit):
http://www.mediafire.com/?nbm7bpa0lnqp3si
Download the megaupload files first and unrar them. If using Windows 64 bit, download the mediafire files and unrar them into the Thunderbolt Root folder that was just unrared and replace the files it asks to replace.
Use the PDF instructions to start.
A couple of corrections which I came across...may not be the same for all rooters:
First,,,make sure you take off "fast boot" as suggested.
For step one, I had to redo step one for reboot to go forward but that worked as stated.
In "Before Step 2", under the "Note", you will see "After flashing hbooteng.nb0 your phone will reboot". Actually, for me, it was the next step of flashing the "PG05IMG.zip" which it then rebooted. These kind of things get you a bit worried at the moment if everything doesn't go as written
At the end of the rooting, when you "Click on Step 3", My phone immediately rather than the phone sitting there as stated, showed that "You have been successfully rooted...congratulations" -- without rebooting the phone. What I did was the suggestion to close the rooter.exe and restart it and then click on step three again and Presto, same message but the phone rebooted into root
The suggestion to go to clockwork mod is go to all programs and open ROM Manager and do the same...haha...I couldn't find "clockwork"..I was looking for it for about 2 minutes All went well, all permission ran and I rebooted and all is good!
All in all, nice directions and pretty user friendly...Thanks all!!!
thanks for the notes im thinking of rooting my phone and all the extras of people doing it and saying how good it is helps alot when trying to decide if i really want to do it or not.

Forgive me for intruding, but there are already excellent guides on how to root in the development page. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=943
Please route people here, as I am sure this is based off of Team AndIRC's work (including, but not limited to jcase, the original poster of the root method.) and it in no way credits them

[INFO] The developer FAQ thread (all you need to know about things like ABD and REWT)

Here is a list of Frequently Asked Questions for all you people coming here with questions like OMG HAO DO AI REWT MI TAB or MI ABD NUT WERKAN PLZ HALP, and the ever popular CN I RUT 0423 WIT DIS?
Lucky I have compiled the most popular questions and listed them here, with full explenation and solution.
Enjoy!
1. HAO DO I REWT MI TAB? I DUNNO WHER 2 FIND DIS THENKS.
Rooting your Transformer can indeed be done with the link here, however you will need some stuff beforehand like adb to get your Transformer rooted and ready to use that method. So for you guys who do not feel comfortable with that, do this.
2. WUT IS ABD PLZ HALP I DUNNO HOW 2 USE OMG SO CONFUZD
To get adb up and running, you simply have to follow the guide here. Oh, and you need the Asus PC Sync software from here. Simply select your PC operating system, download and install the Asus PC sync software.
Alternatively you can use the guide made by a kind xda member (screenshots included) here.
3. CN I R00T MY 0423 BUILD I WANN HAS ROMS?
Yes, indeed you can with the guides linked above.
4. OMG I HAS US/TW/UK/MOON TF101 CN I FLASH WW ROMS?!
After rooting and installing CWM you can flash any ROM you like, the regions only matter for stock updates at this time. So go ahead and flash any ROM you like.
5. WUT IS CIFS.KO && TUN.KO?!
If you don't know what it is, don't worry about it, it means you probably don't need it. But in the offchance you do need tun.ko for VPN, here is a link to installing openVPN.
6. I ROOTD AND MI CAMERA ++ BT NO WERKAN, WAT I DO?
Simply flash the BLOB_V5 file available in the root guide, use the same steps you used to flash (so not all the steps) BLOB_V4, just replace the CWM_BLOB_V4 parts with CWM_BLOB_V5 and that should fix your issues.
7. OMG MI SD CARD NO WERK FOR FLASHAN ROMS WHAT DO?!
Try and use fix permissions from CWM, or try a couple of times. Another fix for the sd card issue you can try, is to put the non working sd card into an android phone then go to storage on the phone and erase the sd card. reinserting that card into the transformer will then allow it to mount to CWM.
if it still doesn't work your card is probably hated by CWM (some are, for what reason we don't know) and you'll need to use a different SD card.
8. HAO 2 OVERCLOCK, MOAR CLOCK
You can overclock if you have root and CWM already. Simply go here and flash this kernel through CWM.
9. CN I FLASH BLOBZ THRU CWM
There is currently 1 way to flash the blob through a zip update if you are not on the 0325 build. This is by flashing the latest Modaco ROM which has the BLOB included.
10. CN I UNREWT MI TAB? I HAS NO WORRANTIES ANYMOAR
Yes. Simply flash the blob from the Asus website using the same steps you used to flash the CWM blob. here is also a guide.
11. I UPDAETED TO 3.1 NOW REWT NO WERK, WAT DO?
Download the 8.2.2.9 update from Asus and copy it to your internal memory to downgrade or do this.
12. MI TAB IS A BRIK, IT NO DO ANYTHING OMG HALP D: <- sadface
You can use this method to try and unbrick it, if that doesn't work, you're pretty much screwed.
13. WAT MI BATTERI IS DRAINING WTF SHUD I DO?
Well you see we made a shocking discovery today, electronics use electricity while turned on! I know! We were just as surprised as you are!
OMG CANNOT FIND MI INFO WTF IS FORUM SERCH?
For all of you slightly special people out there, here is a list of other threads that might help you find what you need. These have been cherrypicked by moi, feel free to post important additions.

Find myself agreeing with msw1382 I'm afraid. Takes too long to read. Almost need some sort of leetspeak translator to get what you're saying. Guess I'm too old.
I believe the op is a little tired of people asking the same questions over and over. I thought it was kinda funny...

Haha I love it, that has to be the funniest first post I've read on these forums. Anyone who has ever spent any length of time helping out newcomers must surely be able to relate to this. Its horses for coarses tbh but your sense of humour is right up my street.
Also informative at the same time.

I edited it a little to improve readability while trying to keep the original charm, hope it helps.
seshmaru, a fix for the sd card issue, #7 is to put the non working sd card into an android phone then go to storage on the phone and erase the sd card. reinserting that card into the transformer will then allow it to mount to CWM.
just thought you could add that into your list. its been verified by myself and then a couple others tried it also.
i find it hilarious how you worded the headings haha.

Added your fix and credited you in the OP.
I have to agree with some of the previous posters, that this is not easy to read, and the humour is old and nothing special (and repetitive for that matter - one witty question in that style would have gotten the same 'humorous' point across while still keeping the FAQ useful). This way people will probably hardly use it, and certainly not refer to it. That's a shame...

Lol, I think its fine. It's only the headings, not like he/she typed up the actual useful information that way, its still very readable and VERY useful for anyone needing the info.
Sorry, I have to state I find the post annoying as hell. It take four times as long to attempt to read and looks worse than my 7yr old's text messages. But, for any who are so desperate for help that they make it through child speak...
Hopefully, it helps them out.
It's only the headers that are slightly more difficult to read, the actual content is written in perfectly comprehensible english. Besides by having to decipher it, atleast they'd be doing SOMETHING for the info instead of gettng it simply handed to them.

[Q] Wanting To Root

Greetings,
I am looking for an easy to understand method of root.
I have read the new user thread. I am afraid with this so called "easy" method for beginners, there is a lot of jargon used that I simply don't understand.
For example in the thread for easy root, I am lost at step #2 where I am instructed to:
"Note that adb is required.
Push misc.img, busybox, and psnueter using the following commands:"
I don't know what adb is let alone how to push misc.img, busybox and psnueter.
Can someone please point me to the instructions for absolute morons to this process like me.
Thanks in advance.

Android adb http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
which is in the sdk http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
You dont really need to know what the other tools are listed do, you just need to do what it says with them and the tools are linked in the thread you're reading to download I assume. If they aren't, then read through the manual method that is stickied in the developer's forum. A link for the tools (misc.img, busybox, and psnueter) can be found there.
I was a little nervous at first myself. I read over the directions several times and then found some information on how to get adb installed and working. Once I got that step understood the actual rooting process was super easy. You can cut and paste all the commands to ensure you don't typo. Just make sure to validate your checksums to save any potential headaches. My first attempt at it took about 20 minutes and I had absolutely ZERO issues.
It is well worth your time and effort. It is also far better to use this method than the easy root 1 steps as you will gain a slightly better understanding of how your phone works and what steps you can take when you inevitably mess something up flashing ROMS, mods and radios
Thanks for the quick reply.
I am not nervous, I just don't understand what any of this is.
I don't know what adb is or how to use it.
I don't know what copy and pasting the commands means.
I certainly don't know what "validate checksums" are.
I realize I am coming across as a comlete shmo, but explaining how to do this with more computer jargon doesn't clarify the process.
I really need instructions for dooshbags like me.
Thanks in advance.
There are also videos on YouTube showing JCases method and adb setup. I would link but I'm on my phone but it shouldn't be to hard to find.

reading through this might help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143188
There is no "easy", reliable way to root sans ADB and command lines. You will need to know this stuff before you try to root. You're going to need ADB in any event. If learning it isn't knowledge you desire, you shouldn't root your phone. For terms, you should refer to the dictionary stickied at the top of the forum. The best way to learn is to get the Android SDK, set it up, make sure your drivers are there, then play with ADB. Do simply stuff like check your serial number, the md5 of files on your SDcard, and harmless stuff like that. If you've got any questions along the way, feel free to PM me any time. I'm here often. And I'm usually faster than hunting through forums or the internet.

From what i think if u dont want the adb command line ****s you should try the software named "z4root". It automatically roots your phone.
Worked for me. And i think itz the easiest method available.
After installing the apk.
Open the application, click PERMANENT ROOT,
Then dnt let your phone sleep or lock itself, wait for about 10 minutes,
After the process reboot ypur phone.
Voila, you are rooted ..
Am new to the forums. please guide me..
Thanks and sorry for my poor english. Hope you like this.

I would not recommend "easy" root methods, since there is greater room for error. Understanding ADB will help you in the long run

I know z4root doesn't work for any modern HTC. You can have permanent root without s-off. The only way to do that is through ADB, using an engineering hboot, and applying various exploits. All the "easy" root methods are just scripts that do what jcase's guide lays out. And unlike the guide, if something goes south, you're lost and screwed. I think it would be safe to say "easy" roots have probably bricked more phones than anything else.

Yep, and the past guy to go that route, after being warned it was highly prone to failure, had it fail. Then he came back looking for help, but nobody could because what went wrong wasn't at all clear. Just not wise.
Ive used the one click root four times with no issues. Four diffrent tb's from 3 diffrent states. 2 of them had alrdy takin the ota's. Dont have the link handy but if was a time saver. Though a half arse understanding of the method helps avoid issues. Ill post the link when i get home.

I rooted mine manually first. As you said in a previous post most "easy" roots are just scripts. That's what the one I used on my wife's was. I was following along the text of the batch file as I was running it so that if something happened I would know at what part of the script I was at. I had no problems with it though.
I'll agree that I could see where if someone where to run into a problem using script without any knowledge of what the script was doing they would probably end in a very bad place.
I think the obvious was missed in this thread: The OP is not a candidate for rooting. It's a risky task for experienced users and a non-task for noobs. He hasn't even stated a valid need for rooting the phone.

ADB "Android Development Bridge" Simply put just helps you develop apps and fix bugs. (In this case, you will use this to reinstall Android without a locked bootloader (a.k.a. S-Off) (the bootloader is code that is run when you first turn on your device that tells Android to run).
You don't have to know how to use ADB, but you must install it on your computer.
As far as copying and pasting commands go, the tutorial that you choose to visit will tell you to type this command ex: cp image.zip/sdcard/
You will just copy this code out of your browser (FireFox/Internet Explorer/Chrome/etc.) and paste it into a command line.
Your command line will depend on what operating system you use on your pc. Ex for Windows, you will use "Command Prompt" or on Linux/MAC you will use "Terminal".
As far as validation checksums goes, it is used to make sure that the file that you downloaded is 100% the same file that the developer made.
Basically, open up your command line and type (without quotes) "md5 image.zip" also, make sure you change to "image.zip" with whatever/where you file is at.
I would be more specific with these instructions I'd I knew what OS (operating system) you are using on your computer is.
After you type in the command and hit enter, it will spit out a long string of gibberish. Just make sure this "checksum" is the EXACT same as whatever the devolver put in the tutorial you are following.
As far as putting together an idiot proof guide, you will have to forgive us, but I don't think the people here want to have a bunch of people here flooding the forums with very basic questions that have been answered already on the internet. However, don't let that stop you from asking questions. Just make sure you help yourself first (Google what you don't understand) and then ask for clarification.
P.S. I claim touchscreen amnesty for any typos.

Rooting/Cyanogenmod (Macbook)

I'm coming from an iPhone after having all previous gens so I'm completely clueless about Android and the ins/outs of the OS.
I only own MacBooks and curious if:
1. I can root my Skyrocket, if so how?
2. Can I install the Cyanogenmod's?
Also, what exactly are the Cyanogenmods? I've been watching YouTube vids but actually explain what they are and how to install from start to finish on SGS2 SR w/ Macbook.
thanks
cyanogenmod is a custom version of android gingerbread. currently the skyrocket is not supported by cm therefore we do not have cm available. this device is very new so there arent a ton of roms just yet. but the future is promising. you can root your phone on a mac go to this thread and follow the instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340710 if you are on android version 2.3.5
This is all pretty confusing to me...I have team viewer installed on my mac...would you be willing to help me out through this program?
I have no idea what teamviewer is i have a windows machine. But i can do my best to talk u through it. First on your phone push menu then settings then applications then development....then turn on usb debuging
Then download this file http://www.holylivingfuck.com/ACS/stuff/Root/Skyrocket-Easy-Root.zip
Now install the usb drivers for the phone which is here http://www.holylivingfuck.com/Crap/Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1_3_2200_0.exe
When the drivers are done installing plugin your phone and let it fully install
Next unzip the other file you downloaded open the unziped folder, and run the batch/sh file depending on your operating system.
And you should now be rooted

You have to be very careful doing this stuff though. You may want to google. What is rooting an android and also browse around the forums on here and read about rooting and the questions others have posted and the answers they were given before you attempt this. If you mess up rooting or trying to install a custom rom its very easy to break your phone making any mistake. Bottom line is read everything in the skyrocket q&a section general section , and development section about rooting you can before you try it.

Thanks, team viewer is a free app that works on mac/PC...allows you to control my computer. .EXE files won't work on a Mac so I'm kind of stuff right?
I would trust you to remote in on my computer and help me if you're willing. Like I said, team viewer is free.

Thanks
drivers are not needed on a mac or a linux machine.
so ignore the .exe
if you dont do this yourself, you will always be reliant on someone to fix it for you if it messes up in the future. not taking the time to learn it is fkn lazy. if you dont want to learn it, stay stock unrooted, end of story.

Ok well thanks for the .exe part...
I learn better by watching someone else do a task...if I watched someone do it then I would be good. Same thing when I first got my iPhone, someone remoted in and walked me through the process.
Oh wow so macs dont do not require drivers? Thats cool . Never personally even used anything but a windows machine.. and even if someone rooted for you thats not it youd need to know about using cwm recovery and about flashing roms and odin. And tars and nandroids and titanium backups so someone rooting for you is just going to give u the ability to break your phone even easier then attempting to root.

A user named qbking has made a bunch of how to videos its not for our phone its for an epic so

But as i said not our phone so youll still need to read about rooting in our forums. Like i said browse around the general , and q&a and development sections for the skyrocket. And just read everything u see about rooting and flashing roms, and the risks involved if u make a mistake.. lol basically read read read read. There isno easy answer you have to put in the time and research to learn these things
