Hey guys!
Noob here who has flashed other phones in the past, but never anything Android based. Is there a step by step guide anywhere for the Mesmerize? Something generic and simple to follow from post root to a fully flashed phone?

Well our moderator is nowhere to be seen.. we should have a step by step sticked.. but we don't.
1) Root your phone. Search the forums to figure out how to do that.
2) Install RomManager and the ClockworkMod Recovery. There's a thread for that as well.
3) Download and install the ROM of your choice. Roms are located in the Dev Forums.
The details can be found in the Mesmerize General and the Mesmerize Development Forums. Search is your friend.

When I began this process about 2 weeks ago, I was at the same experience level as you Tyler. This is what worked easiest for me for my US Cellular Mesmerize.
(I'm just going to elaborate a bit on what Dcow posted, hopefully he doesn't mind .
Also keep in mind there are many variations to each step, this is what worked for me the easiest as a newb, hoping it does for you too.
And last but not least. There is always the disclaimer that attempting any of this can and will make your phone dysfunctional and or possibly bricked beyond repair (but most likely just dysfunctional which is a pain in the arse to deal with) if you do not follow steps completely (and of a trustworthy source such as xda).
So take your time, read each step that these people have taken the time to carefully write up, and you'll be just fine. Be patient as things don't always move fast and you never want to freak out as you may screw things up bad, when it's actually just taking longer than you would expect. There is alot going on behind the scenes so just give it time, trust me!
1) Root your phone. - Basically all this means is gaining the ability to give programs/apps and yourself SuperUser access (equivalent of being admin in windows) and also the ability to flash roms via recovery, detailed below.
The easiest way to root is to acquire the z4root.apk.
Download Here
After download, put z4root.apk on your SD card root directory
Then make sure in Settings->Applications that the "Unknown sources" box is checked.
If you don't have a file manager, download a free one from the market, using the file manager navigate to the z4root.apk and select to install it.
Reboot your phone
After it boots, open the z4root app and press root. At this point it is going to hang, give it 2 minutes and pull the battery. Count to 10, put it back in and turn it on. - This is normal, trust me.
After it reboots open z4root again and run it, this time it will run no problems and phone will reboot.
Once you are rooted (you will see the superuser icon in your apps, it will show apps you've given that permission to eventually) you will need to make sure you have a file manager that can request root permissions (read/write) before you will be able to complete the next step. Search the market for "root file manager" and pick one to download and install.
Also at this step I would download and install RomManager and TerminalEmulator as you will need these later.
2) Install RomManager and the ClockworkMod Recovery. These will basically just give you the ability to boot into recovery where you can more easily flash kernel's/rom's and anything else you wish to push to your phone.
I was able to install the Clockwork Mod Recovery very easily just by simply using the root file manager app I downloaded with these instructions.
Download the two zip files located in the first post here
Place both files on your SD card root
Using the root file explorer app, move the Redbend_ua file from the SD card to /system/xbin/
Long press on the Redbend_ua file and click permissions, there should be one check missing, check that.
Now open the TerminalEmulator
NOTE:The spaces below are actual spaces and the bml8 is a lowercase "L" not a "1" there is also a space after cd, after redbend_ua, after restore, and after recovery.bin
TYPE THIS ALL EXACTLY AS SHOWN BETWEEN THE QUOTES
at the command line ($) type "su" (then hit enter)
Type "cd /system/xbin" (then hit enter, which changes directory)
Type "redbend_ua restore /sdcard/recovery.bin /dev/block/bml8" (then hit enter, It will now scroll a bunch of text and reboot.)
After phone boots, open RomManager
Click on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Select the Samsung Fascinate your phone will still be the mesmerize
At this point you're all stock and ready for new kernel/rom.
3) Install Voodoo lagfix kernel and new 5.0 sound
If you want speed and good battery life (and high standard marks) +unlocking the headphone amp and eq controls (it makes even the samsung headset sound killer) go here and follow those steps for using your now functional recovery mode to flash the new Voodoo 5.0 kernel.
Note: There are a few ways of getting into this recovery mode, the best way if all else fails is to hold phone from the back with left hand (thumb on volume button, in the middle holding both down and pointer on power button) hold these down until the mesmerize logo pops up then slide your thumb down a bit to volume down only (if you slip don't worry it might blink but it'll still go to recovery)
Note: If you are more code/computer oriented there is a method using a program called ADB, which I'm not familiar with and seemed more complicated than what I went with. Search for that on the forum if you wish to do the above process that way instead.
4) Download and install the ROM of your choice.
Just pick one from this list Here, read through the first post of each before you decide, some are plug and play some take a few steps first.

That is the old Voodoo kernel, you will need to go to the link I listed in my post for Voodoo 5, and yes you can simply disable lagfix and flash the new one over the old.
And no problems on the write up, I spent a good amount of time digging up the links and stuff but I'll spend a little more time polishing it and will post it in another thread for Scotsman to stickie.
And to answer your last question, no I'm having no problems with any functions of my phone after upgrading to voodoo 5.

There isn't a button, per se. When you go in to recovery, there is a disable lagfix option under voodoo. You can put the file, disable_lagfix, in the voodoo folder on your sdcard to do the same thing.
He does write up a good how-to, though, doesn't he.

I think the reason you don't usually see this much detail from others is because they are more developmentally enabled and therefore "forget" to break down the little steps that are second nature to them but foreign language to a non-developer.
Thanks. I found it. and disabled it aready. now i just download the file in the write-up and boot into recovery, install zip from sd card and select my file correct?
I always wipe dalvik cache (in advance settings within Recover) before flashing anything.
So it's;
Disable Lagfix
Reboot (you'll hear the chick reversing the process)
Clear Dalvik
Install voodoo 5.0 from zip
reboot
re-enable lagfix and reboot one last time.
Then you'll need to download the voodoo controller app from the market to control the amp gain and set a few other eq settings.

Ive done all that except re-enable lag-fix. Noone ever mentions that step. Do I just remove the "disable_lagfix" file from the voodoo file and reboot?
I just enable/disable it through the voodoo menu in recovery, much easier than pushing files around. In your case i think you should be able to delete the file and reboot, but if not you may just need to go into voodoo and enable it that way (after removing the disable file)
I guess if I edit a post and dont finish it, the post gets deleted. Oh well, I asked how to reenalbe lag fix but i figured it out. Like I said I had to put the disable lag_fix file in the voodoo folder. I just had to remove it from that folder.
Is there a way to tell (besides the quickness and the extended battery life) how do i tell if its voodoo5? just out of curiousity
Just a guess here but possibly under About Phone the kernel version might? Mine is listed as 2.6.29
I would also think that when trying to use the Voodoo app it would fail if you didn't have the kernel so that would be a sign too, if that's what you're looking for.

Now I think I might wait to see the awesome developers come up with for 2.2. I dont mind the stock 2.1 for now. I just dont want to keep flashing ROM's, if they might be close to getting a version of 2.2 going. I can wait....I think.

2.2 is so close, you should be able to smell it. I've had it's froyo-ey goodness all over my phone and even with the issues we're still having, I flash it back every night when I get home to play with it.

Hello everyone. It has been a year since i bought my Captivate and i just put my hands on this awesome device (Infuse 4G).
I feel a little retarded as i completely forgot who i donated to on this forum for helping me to unlock my captivate when there was no soft for it in the market yet. I would like to thank you again whoever it was.
Anyway, I would like to ask you to help me to get rid of At&T crapware and get a nice clean fast rom. I will also need instruction for a total retard. Flashing a phone is not an everyday business for me.

Which zip have you downloaded and extracted?
Have you read any instructions that are all over this site and many others?
There are literally video tutorials that go step by step from stock out of the box, to rooted and installing a ROM.
Search is your friend. Your best bet is to do some reading before you attempt to install a custom ROM. It's actually quite simple to do, hell I have upgraded my ROM while driving from the hanger at work over to the airport terminal.
However, if you don't know what you are doing, and aren't familiar with the concepts, you can and most likely will end up with a nice shiny brick. (soft brick most likely)
So, find the INFUSED rom thread and start reading and looking at the tutorials he has posted before you take another step. Then, and only then, if you still have questions, people will be very happy to help you out.
Also, as for unlock - if you read through the various threads on this forum, there are two methods covered for obtaining the SIM unlock code for our phones. One requires your phone to be rooted already, one is a script that roots the phone, extracts the code, and then optionally undoes the rooting.

I wanted to learn the manual ADB method suggested by JCASE in the developemen forum, however i've had trouble understanding, seting up, & using ADB.
I have rooted two two htc eris phones before with JCASE's simple one click root method, so that doesn't realy count. I also roote my Moto Droid, but that was a file that was downloadable by the phone it's self, so that was pretty simple also.
The thunderbolt root seems a little more complicated for my knowledge level, so I've decided to go about it using a youtube tutorial called How To: Root A HTC Thunderbolt ( Easiest Tutorial / Step by step .
this method envolves a program called TB-Auto-Root. I attempted to download it to the PC using slow DSL connection, but it said expected download time is over 8 hours. I followed the same link to my phone and it is at 12% in less than 30min. Can't i Just download it it my phone then copy it to my pc? If so, do I need to copy it directly to the C\ drive, or does it matter?

First of all, don't use easy roots. If you insist on it, then yes you can download on your phone then transfer it to the PC. Check the MD5 to ensure the file is good. As far as where to put it, I am sure the tutorial should tell you.

You should YouTube a video called "thunderbolt adb setup" or something. Set up the Google driver, fix the config file so it works with the thunderbolt (google adb thunderbolt and its one of the first links). The rooting software shouldn't take that long to download, even on slow dsl...

Wish people would read before responding
on auto root when i get to the step of pressig 1 it responds that "ADB is not a vlid internal or external......" what does adb have to do with auto root? please help me root my device.... thanx for every ones help, ~Dave
I replied to the other thread but if you insist on using the auto root I can only say this:
The auto root script does EXACTLY what is described in JCase's root sticky. It just automates the process so less user interaction is required. (i.e. It types in the commands for you) That is what it has to do with adb.

Exactly. I did the rooting (and eventually unrooting) manually by simply copying and pasting the commands from the tutorial jcase wrote up into ADB. Process of rooting took me roughly I'd say 25 minutes but honestly its not that hard. Just follow the steps and you'll be just fine.
Oh and unrooting took me all of four minutes to do lol.
Search YouTube for "HTC Thunderbolt root". Find the tutorial by Nat3Mil, explains step by step starting with how to set up adb all the way to installing the custom recovery image. Don't get overwhelmed just take your time. Probably takes about 45 minutes give or take. He did a handful of videos including flashing roms, radios, and kernels. See you on the other side my friend...
how are we to know what is wrong when you are using a tutorial posted on youtube as your guide?
Most of us used jcase tutorial to root. Really, it is very simple to do. You probably don't have the files in the right spot on your pc, or you don't have adb in the right spot.
Wow ok aside from the pricks that are not helping...make sure your phone is in charge only, debug is checked, and make sure you have the HTC drivers installed on your PC, if you downloaded the file onto your phone I'm assuming you didn't install the drivers and that what's probably wrong. Here's the link if ya need it, also make sure you haven't done the latest update if you did its not going to work.

Dont know if you know this but you have use the rear usb ports on the pc or the program doesnt read it also need the htc sync drivers

That might be the case with your pc, but usb port has never mattered on my desktop pc, laptop or from within a virtual machine. Perhaps if you attach to some sort of weird device usb like a monitor's usb ports it might.
I would advice the OP to read the tutorial in the development section that's stickied and as a fallback for more information, find a youtube video that explains the same process. I don't know of any links offhand, but I'm sure a 2minute search or less will make a couple show up that do basically what you see in the tutorial sticky thread. However, I would not use the youtube videos alone.

Not true on my PC. Sounds like your front ones are messed up. In response to the OP simply watch a youtube video. You are really going to want to learn ADB instead of using one of the auto-rooters. You will still need an ADB connection either way as it is just automated.

Nobody was trying to be a jerk, but there are 19 different auto root scripts that all have a pretty high possibility of failing at a random point. Leaving you with no clue which step things went wrong at. This makes it really hard to offer any help aside from telling them it is a much better idea to do it the "long" way.
So OP I apologize if you took what I said as being rude. It was not my intention. I was trying to answer what I could without giving bad advice about the problem with the auto script.

I agree with most everyone else's answers. Don't be afraid to follow the standard method jcase laid out. It's not hard, there's little margin for error so long as you follow the instructions, and it never hurts to learn a little adb knowledge. I came from a DINC, and I never used adb before (I rooted the DINC with unrevoked). It's simple. Getting the proper drivers installed is probably the hardest part for someone not experienced in this department, but even so, still really simple.
I'd avoid the 1 click root's. Like mentioned previously, basically all they are is a batch script that runs the same exact commands you'd be copying and pasting yourself if you followed the jcase tutorial. Given that, there's margin for error as you have no control over it unless you modify the script yourself. You're much better off to listen to most people's advice here and just follow the jcase method.

No with that program it needs to be the rear usb ports i dont know why its that way but thats how it is. Research it. All my usb ports are in perfect working condition. But for what ever reason you will get that error if you use the front ports.

I have read the new user thread. I am afraid with this so called "easy" method for beginners, there is a lot of jargon used that I simply don't understand.
For example in the thread for easy root, I am lost at step #2 where I am instructed to:
"Note that adb is required.
Push misc.img, busybox, and psnueter using the following commands:"
I don't know what adb is let alone how to push misc.img, busybox and psnueter.
Can someone please point me to the instructions for absolute morons to this process like me.

You dont really need to know what the other tools are listed do, you just need to do what it says with them and the tools are linked in the thread you're reading to download I assume. If they aren't, then read through the manual method that is stickied in the developer's forum. A link for the tools (misc.img, busybox, and psnueter) can be found there.
I was a little nervous at first myself. I read over the directions several times and then found some information on how to get adb installed and working. Once I got that step understood the actual rooting process was super easy. You can cut and paste all the commands to ensure you don't typo. Just make sure to validate your checksums to save any potential headaches. My first attempt at it took about 20 minutes and I had absolutely ZERO issues.
It is well worth your time and effort. It is also far better to use this method than the easy root 1 steps as you will gain a slightly better understanding of how your phone works and what steps you can take when you inevitably mess something up flashing ROMS, mods and radios

There is no "easy", reliable way to root sans ADB and command lines. You will need to know this stuff before you try to root. You're going to need ADB in any event. If learning it isn't knowledge you desire, you shouldn't root your phone. For terms, you should refer to the dictionary stickied at the top of the forum. The best way to learn is to get the Android SDK, set it up, make sure your drivers are there, then play with ADB. Do simply stuff like check your serial number, the md5 of files on your SDcard, and harmless stuff like that. If you've got any questions along the way, feel free to PM me any time. I'm here often. And I'm usually faster than hunting through forums or the internet.

From what i think if u dont want the adb command line ****s you should try the software named "z4root". It automatically roots your phone.
Worked for me. And i think itz the easiest method available.
After installing the apk.
Open the application, click PERMANENT ROOT,
Then dnt let your phone sleep or lock itself, wait for about 10 minutes,
After the process reboot ypur phone.
Voila, you are rooted ..

I would not recommend "easy" root methods, since there is greater room for error. Understanding ADB will help you in the long run

Don't think z4root works on the Thunderbolt just search youtube for Thunderbolt root and watch the tutorials. Links are provided for everything that needs to be downloaded.

I know z4root doesn't work for any modern HTC. You can have permanent root without s-off. The only way to do that is through ADB, using an engineering hboot, and applying various exploits. All the "easy" root methods are just scripts that do what jcase's guide lays out. And unlike the guide, if something goes south, you're lost and screwed. I think it would be safe to say "easy" roots have probably bricked more phones than anything else.

Sorry man I just wanted to say thanks to the other user I mentioned ,his method of rooting was and still is a great help to me already rooted 5 bolts and currently on #6 as I'm typing.

Do a google search for thunderbolt auto root. There is one posted in the Thuderbolt forums. I can't link directly to it because I don't have enough posts yet. I tested it on my wife's thunderbolt without a problem.

Yep, and the past guy to go that route, after being warned it was highly prone to failure, had it fail. Then he came back looking for help, but nobody could because what went wrong wasn't at all clear. Just not wise.
Ive used the one click root four times with no issues. Four diffrent tb's from 3 diffrent states. 2 of them had alrdy takin the ota's. Dont have the link handy but if was a time saver. Though a half arse understanding of the method helps avoid issues. Ill post the link when i get home.

I rooted mine manually first. As you said in a previous post most "easy" roots are just scripts. That's what the one I used on my wife's was. I was following along the text of the batch file as I was running it so that if something happened I would know at what part of the script I was at. I had no problems with it though.
I'll agree that I could see where if someone where to run into a problem using script without any knowledge of what the script was doing they would probably end in a very bad place.
I think the obvious was missed in this thread: The OP is not a candidate for rooting. It's a risky task for experienced users and a non-task for noobs. He hasn't even stated a valid need for rooting the phone.

ADB "Android Development Bridge" Simply put just helps you develop apps and fix bugs. (In this case, you will use this to reinstall Android without a locked bootloader (a.k.a. S-Off) (the bootloader is code that is run when you first turn on your device that tells Android to run).
You don't have to know how to use ADB, but you must install it on your computer.
As far as copying and pasting commands go, the tutorial that you choose to visit will tell you to type this command ex: cp image.zip/sdcard/
You will just copy this code out of your browser (FireFox/Internet Explorer/Chrome/etc.) and paste it into a command line.
Your command line will depend on what operating system you use on your pc. Ex for Windows, you will use "Command Prompt" or on Linux/MAC you will use "Terminal".
As far as validation checksums goes, it is used to make sure that the file that you downloaded is 100% the same file that the developer made.
Basically, open up your command line and type (without quotes) "md5 image.zip" also, make sure you change to "image.zip" with whatever/where you file is at.
I would be more specific with these instructions I'd I knew what OS (operating system) you are using on your computer is.
After you type in the command and hit enter, it will spit out a long string of gibberish. Just make sure this "checksum" is the EXACT same as whatever the devolver put in the tutorial you are following.
As far as putting together an idiot proof guide, you will have to forgive us, but I don't think the people here want to have a bunch of people here flooding the forums with very basic questions that have been answered already on the internet. However, don't let that stop you from asking questions. Just make sure you help yourself first (Google what you don't understand) and then ask for clarification.
P.S. I claim touchscreen amnesty for any typos.

Im trying to get someone to help walkme through the rooting process of a motoactv watch that I received for christmas. The device was recently rooted, and it appears that the process is fairely easy. I have limited rooting experience with android phones, and have jailbroken a few iphones, but have never had to mess with command lines, or adb. If someone is willing to walkme through the process on here I will be more than willing to make a modest paypal donation to them (we can discuss payment terms.)

Also note that I am only interested in doing this as long as the core fitness apps and capabilities of the device arent completly destroyed, as this was a gift from my girlfriend and it needs to function in a fitness capacity. Im thinking that they shouldnt be affected, and that I probably will only gain the ability to delete them, but I could be wrong. I have one on order. I thought the process was pretty straightforward. It is easier on a Mac or Linux as there are scripts that use zergrush already available. If you are unfamiliar with using the command line I would recommend finding someone else to root it for you.
I am rooting mine for Google music and adding watch faces but I am kind of tickled by the idea of watching NetFlix on a wristwatch.

I already rooted the MotoACTv that I have. But I am having problems installing the Google APPS zip file downloaded from the cynagoen web site. Can some one explain how to install this so I can get the Market up and running on the watch. I already installed other apps like pandora and they work. Only thing is that I installed this with adb install command and not the via the market. Would love to have the market working. Please help.

If you downloaded the gapps from cyanogenmod as you should have, you need to adb push everything that isn't an apk.
There are a few libraries that need to be installed. adb push filename /file/location/name is the way to do this. The locations match the unzipped folder names.

I tried to follow the directions and I finally got the phone to root. Then when applying the new interface it must have not liked the commands I was trying to use.
Can anyone give step by step directions. It took me about 2 hours to figure out what applications I needed and how to use them so I am sure others would benefit from this.
The directions on that original post was way too vague for us noobs

Oh, no... Are you sure your watch is bricked? That really is awful... I thought mine was for a bit after I used Super One Click to root it, but I was able to recover it by holding Start + Power for 10-15 seconds then plugging it in.
It seems zergRush is safer -- I ended up with root after that, but a couple of others in the #motoactv channel on freenode tried it and ended up with the phone seemingly dead (though a start+power off like above fixed it) and without root.
I posted this in the other thread but I am impatient and figured it wouldn't hurt to ask here too so,

MOTOACTV update without Windows
I'd like to root my MOTOACTV. My clock is running version 4.53.50. To root I had to update at least to version 4.55.78. I found the file delta-ota-Blur_Version.4.53.50-4.55.78.Motorola-F100.Retail.en.US.zip but I've no idea how to flash that to my clock without Windows.
Any ideas?
