IKVM as we know already more-or-less works on the RT, and as I recently found out - Eclipse can be made to run under IKVM. So you'd think that getting the two to behave together should be a piece of cake. Errrr nope.
Right now my RT is very slowly running all of the Eclipse plugins through IKVM. Why on the device itself you ask? Turns out there's a special build of IKVM specifically for ARM devices - using the current binaries or source code and building that won't get you far because it's all .Net 2 (and RT only runs 4.0/4.5) and an absolute ***** to get it all to build (also requiring a .Net 4 version of SharpZipLib which is also 2.0 as shipped, but that was easy to build as 4.0)
So the main obstacle is getting a .Net 4 version of eclipse-clr.exe which I've managed to put together with a little mess, a lot of other things reference it so you need one that's the right version for it to build and it seems happy enough. For those interested I've attached a copy below and you can just substitute it for the one referenced in the first link.
Updates as I make progress.
Edit: First Update
Okay so it's all built, after messing around getting an ARM version of ikvm-native.dll (attatched) to build Eclipse now makes a serious effort to start, but it's unhappy with a couple of the plugins for reasons I've yet to figure out.
Just as a side note, I have confirmed that Eclipse will run in IKVM on the desktop. So there is hope to be had...
Edit2: swt-win32 and other libraries.
Eclipse itself ships with a couple of Win32 native libraries. These are of course compiled as x86 and therefore won't run.
Thankfully there's only two of them. eclipse_1115.dll and swt-win32-3452.dll - so my next step is to rebuild these as ARM.

Indeed. Eclipse wouldn't be my first choice, but since we have IKVM and Eclipse is Java based - it makes it a lower hanging fruit than something like Code::Blocks.

Makes sense that where there is java (even crippled IKVM) that eclipse follows.
Should I run McMyAdmin on my Surface? Nice to see you here at XDA! I haven't looked at the Eclipse native components, but I guess they are not VC++ so it would require some porting to get them to compile for arm in VS.

Not a question for this thread. BUt I can say that the minecraft server jar doesn't appear to run well under IKVM on x86, neither does the minecraft client, I tried both. Without minecraft server you won't be running McMyAdmin any time soon

Damn, right now I have a RDP connection to my Android phone running Debian in chroot to use EclipseIDE when I'm away from home. No matter how crippeld this might be, it'll be greater than this. Thanks for your effort. I'd say that I'd help you, but I am more of a linux person and the surface is my only windows device. It's very difficult because the ROM it's de facto a linux system with his initrd, totally different from our actual HTC ROM.
there is an sdk for android.. jus google it and u will be sure to find it
did you take those screenshots?
If I buy the HTC Dream in Taiwan,
with a traditional chinese ROM,
do you think it will be easier to flash the ROM compared to windows mobile?
I usually wanted to buy a HTC Touch Pro in Taiwan,
but if flashing the ROM doesn't work right,
the phone is waistet money.
But Android is open, so it will be easy no?
i'm happy to see you are working on this i like this OS and want to have it running on my Polaris instead the R1 Syrius .
Thanks for the work you made.

On your laptop, why don't you just get a LiveCD or LiveDVD? Runs the entire operating system off of a disc, no need to install anything. Just boot up, choose "boot from CD" and you're good to go. Linux = Godly

There were live CDs as long ago as 8 years. Knoppix was one of the first (and best).
Linux has come a long way since then. As long as you're not buying serial-number "1" of any piece of hardware, you should be ok nowadays.

Here's what I used:
- Version 1.1.5 of the app, makes disk read/writes much faster!
- Windows 95 SDcard/usb version. (i'm not allowed to post the link to this - search google).
Just install the windows 95 to your sdcard, type win and wait a few seconds and then Windows 95 starts up and is fully usable! Don't forget to shutdown windows after you are done, otherwise you'll have possible disk corruption and scandisk will want to run at the next startup!

DOSBox is an awesome app for playing old school DOS games such as Doom and Command & Conquer even running DOS based versions of Windows.
This Android port of DOSBox is pretty cool especially for the ASUS Transformer. DOSBox has always been a must have application on my PCs and now it's a must have app on my Android devices as well!

BlueStacks' NEW Android App Player for PC. Run android apps on Windows PC.
BlueStacks just opened its Beta doors a few days ago.
If you own a Window’s anything (laptop or desktop), you MUST try out BlueStacks App Player.
It is not slow and jerky like phone emulators or like Amazon’s virtual playground for some apps in its appstore.
Of course, not every app will work with BlueStacks, but SO MANY of them do. It is worth playing with.
Your Phone Will Sync All The Favs!
Another great perk is that you can link your phone to the app player on your laptop or desktop with their Cloud Connect app.
This app installs on your Android phone and allows you to pick and choose which apps from your phone you want synced to your desktop.
You will have access to the Amazon AppStore and Get Jar and a few other appstores right out of the gate.

The ARM emulation can be a bit slow, not optimal for running games. It will virtualize anything it can in x86, but most games are ARM only.
Bluestacks does plan on making a version for Windows 8 ARM tablets and since ARM can then be virtualized instead of being emulated it should have no performance issues.
wow this is interesting...! thanks for this
This seems nice, will try it asap.
i'll try this, thanks a loooot!
Having tried the BlueStacks emulator recently, I can attest that it's very easy to set up and get playing your favorite Android games right on your desktop. However, it's only available for Windows currently and you have to install the Cloud Connect app on your phone to get it to sync with apps only found in the Android market.
If you want something that actually runs the full Android OS on any platform (through VirtualBox) and doesn't limit you to GetJar or Amazon's app stores, you should check out Android-x86. I made a video yesterday showing how to install the Android-x86 emulator in less than 5 minutes.
Granted, it's not quite as streamlined as BlueStacks, but it grants access to all the Android apps you would normally have on any 4.0 device and seems to run much more smoothly.

Very cool find OP. This thing certainly seems to be more than capable of most of our games: I just got a 4826 on Quadrant, and a 9633 on Antutu.
I don't know if this is the necessary way to do it, but I got ADW Launcher and Play Store installed by installing this, then going to system/apps and installing g1.apk. The default settings app is in there too.
And the settings app claims the model is "GT-N7000", or the Galaxy Note. Anybody know if this ROM is based on that, or if they are just trying to emulate the phone?
I'm trying for root now.
I would love to see a Linux client, but this looks cool.
how about emulate android app,, it can??
Superb Man. Good Work.
As far as i know this is the first attempt at a windows 95/98 based game emulator for the android system, apparently the first beta will be released on the market "soon", first game being caeser 3, and other games based on the demand of thoses games, so if any of you guys have a favorite let him know as he will be working on games based on the demand for them.

Starcraft is working fine with this. It's amazing it is running at full speed
The only problem I encountered so far, is that protoss zealots are invisible due to some graphical bug. Their shadow can be seen however.
Overall, this has really high potential and I've seen on the forums that Age of empires is already in the making for it.
Good job!
I find it outstanding how the Devs managed to write an emulator? that runs so smoothly, im gobsmacked that it involves x86 games, windows no less, looking at the videos it runs better then some retro emulators like dosbox and the like, even though dos is an older system, and these windows games being more graphic intensive, in my opinion this guys project has major potential
I often wonder if he's found the mecha of android emulation in its effiency or if it just applies in this particular case, being windows emulation only?

Anybody knows anyone who has updated/hacked Winulator to work on Lollipop and/or Marshmallow?
Hi All,
We have just released a new Android virtual machine, called Leapdroid, it is a Windows program that allows you to run Android Apps in Windows. Our focus has been on graphics performance. It outperforms all other players on market, such as BlueStacks, Genymotions, Andyroid, etc... it supports a lot of games, and it it is totally free, you can download it from our website:
http://www.leapdroid.com
From development point of views, we have implemented most features that Google's emulator has, such as compatible adb. Our virtual machine is the only vm that can start adb before vm starts, same as a real device, so you can get the first line of adb logcat. We have also optimized other aspects of the system.
Check it out!

Here is a video with Leapdroid playing a few games, including a shooting game. This video demonstrates the advanced key mapping feature.
Booting Speed is really amazing
I tried using several android emulators such as B****, G*****. Tried this new one. Having not gone through intensive usage now, I am already shocked by its launching speed. Amazing! Really beats others. It is a fresh boot, not like B****'s not shutting down and faking instant boot.
I forgot to mention that our vm supports multiple instances. After installations, two android virtual machines will be created.
Has been looking around for a VM to play Minecraft. This is the only capable so far.
Thanks, Leapdroid!
How I can switch input language?
"Control + Spacebar" not working for me.

One question: (You would rock some worlds with that)
Could you somehow release a version compiled for arm-thumb2 so windows-rt-JB users could finally open android apps on their first gen surface RT <3
Probably impossible, but I never give up the hope
Hi Blade,
Thanks for the nice suggestions. A thinner run-time version that can run on ARM systems is definitely our direction, but it will take quite sometime to implement. For the moment, we are focusing on developing a new generation of android virtual machine on X86 architecture. As you may have noted, current android virtual machines are still not that compatible if compared with a real android device, many apps still don't run well inside emulators. Leapdroid will lead in these aspects.
Good performance

Assuming you have your APK ready:
I've found the following information on their website h t t p : / / leapdroid . com / helpcenter . html. It seems that they reply on standard adb to install programs.
I typically use apkmirror to download APKs. What kind of channel do you use?
BTW: I do not understand XDA does not let me to post web links. Maybe for safety reason....
http://www.leapdroid.com/helpcenter.html has more info
Before we enable drag/drop (which should come soon), you will have to use adb to install apk.
Adb works for me. Great work!
When can we see a Mac version?
We are working on Mac and actually Linux version too, but currently focusing on Windows.
How do I unroot or install Xposed?
You can do adb remount, then you can change system partition
I'd love to try this, but I feel very suspicious.
There's no "about" page on the Leapdroid website, so we don't know who we are giving our Google Account credentials to when we login.
