Hello,
I read through most of the posts concerning custom launchers but still can't find an answer to my problem.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S running on Froyo. I am trying to set GoLauncher as my default launcher but there seems to be a hickup somewhere.
When I hit the home button a window always pops up asking me which launcher I want to use (TW or Go) and I always tick the box underneath to use as default and then select GoLauncher but the window keeps popping up again every time I press the home key.
I also tried to clear the defaults in both TW and Go Launcher but the buttons are grayed out...so I guess the phone does not store my default choice.
Any ideas?

Don't worry about it...took me 15min to reorganize them. It was worth the time for the chance of fixing the problem.

I have the same problem using htc desire z running froyo 2.3.. not rooted.
Have tried re installing. Tried home switcher. tried other launcher than go launcher ex. Problem still persists..
If anyone has made it work for them. Please share what to do.
Thx
Well.. for me the problem was with the 3D camera app.. for some reason it showed up on the bottom of the list of launcher.. unistalled and presto.. no constant settings launcher as default
Via HTC Desire Z
Have tried everything in this post and none have worked for very long.
I am going to try seeing if the Estrongs "Suite" is installed and causing a problem, but I definitely know this isn't a launcher problem as this happens with several different launchers...I thought it was a HTC Sense issue, but I have now seen (I think) a couple of posts from a Samsung device.
I have the Thunderbolt and since the 2.3.4 update, I have had the same problem. I have read several posts, but no real solution. The Homesmack didn't work. This Really sounds like an HTC issue, but I am still trying to read more posts.
Did you try doing a battery pull? Or going into settings and clearing the stock launchers data and cache?

Solution
I have Samsung Galaxy S2 -
Applications - Manage Applications - [All] - TWLauncher - Clear Defaults
I think there's also an App called "Launcher" but look for anything with the word "Launcher" in it and clear the defaults
Or try installing "Go Locker" and it'll ask you again which one you want your default to be
Have to post here since I'm new... Love Valhalla 1.2! I just get way too many reboots/restarts with (I think) the launcher. If I move an app around, it reboots. Is there a fix/alternate launcher for this? Whitehawkx is the man! I'll donate if it helps!
I'm using Valhalla 1.2 and I get the same thing. I've noticed that anytime that does happen, if I am patient and don't touch the phone for a few minutes, it will eventually settle down again. It only happens to me rarely now. It can be annoying though, I agree.
I think most of us use a launcher from the Market. I use Launcher Pro (I have the paid version but there is a free one) and it works Great. It is way better that stock in my opinion.

i removed the launcher.apk before flashing. put launcherpro.apk in my system/app folder of the zip file. I then added the ro.home__app_adj=1 line into my build.prop.
finally, i removed w/e apps didnt want and added others to the system/app folder. then i flashed the rom.
i dont have any problems with the launcher redraws anymore cause 1. it is now a system app and 2. it has a high priority when it comes to ram.

you can also place the launcher pro key in the system/app folder prior to install and the pro launcher will automatically be installed. makes flashing very easy should you not want to restore data. it also give you a ton more space because the ROM memory and the internal are separate. instead of only using 200mb of ROM memory and 400 mb of internal, i use 400mb of ROM and only 140mb of internal space.

Hrm...jager555, do you think it would be okay to delete launcher.apk through Titanium and manually push launcherpro.apk into the /system/app? Also, my .apk for launcherpro is "com.fede.launcher-1.apk". Did you rename yours or did you just say that for simplicity purposes?
Does that extra line you add to your build.prop put the launcher into high priority RAM? If so, can't you just set that in the LauncherPro memory settings?
I've still been getting the redraws, so I wanna try this method.

i would start fresh, to be honest. if you delete the launcher while it is the only launcher running, you are going to get fc's like crazy. i would put launcherpro in the system/app prior to flashing the rom. i do it this way because during the flash, it installs other things too (hidden folders, themes, other things). i usually test everything out before i delete it, but i get rid of all of the launcher stuff, download ui apps, live wallpapers, and 99% of the things i dont use. like with ftw, it had adw launcher, adw themes, and all of this stuff that i dont use, so i delete it before it is even installed. since we've all been scarred with the crapiness of the windows registry, i like to keep things neat.
i found an interesting way to get the actual launcher apk, so you guys feel free to use this method (woot). it will work for 99% of apk (does not work for quickpic, tegrak). uninstall launcherpro. now, redownload it from the market. once it downloads and installs, open root explorer, go to your cache folder. in that, you should see a file called download.apk. this is the launcher pro.apk you just downloaded and installed from the market (think about it. its like your temp folder in windows). take this file and copy it out of the folder to wherever you want. this is the file you put in your system/app folder. i do this for everything. so i dont have to redownload everything. sometimes, i like to start fresh and not restore my personal data and this method makes it easy. you can cust if i ever switch phones to help someone else, i can just flash my customized rom with apps and have it have all the things i have, but with no data. its nice.
the extra line does put it as high priority (credit goes to antonx for that). i did try putting it as high priority in the settings, but it still gave me a ton of redraws on lp.
try it out and if it still redraws, set it as high priority in the launcher settings. or you can change the line item to 0 instead of 1. (ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1) i put this line at the very bottom of my build prop. i only get launcher redraws if i am in multiple apps without closing them and the phone goes to sleep for an hour or two.
bkoon, hope this helps, man

i use go sms pro and i never have that problem. did you delete your mms.apk from the system folder? if you didnt, then that may be why. mms.apk will always have priority over gosms. use the method i told bkoon above to set it as a system app and once you remove mms.apk, you shouldnt get too many closes. yes, it should work with go launcher.

@jager555
Is there a guide or a thread somewhere I can read to learn how to mod a ROM BEFORE I flash it? Like you describe in this thread.
I follow what you are saying but because of my level of knowledge I need something more definitive ie what tools I would need and the processes.
I have a windows 7 laptop (brand new) and have 7zip installed. I am going to download and install ADB tonight using a guide from addictivetips.com..
I feel I'm ready to start modding like this... Flashing in fun but this is really modding your Android!
Forgive me if I have gotten off topic or personalized the thread but it seems related to me.
Thank you

lol. its easy, just open the zip file on your computer, go to system folder in the rom, then to app folder. from there, you can add/remove apks. no need for adb. you can do this in linux or mac as well. its a simple procedure that can make the world of difference.
once again, be sure to know what you are removing. what i would recommend is downloading a rom and making a copy to mess with. flash the rom on your phone, then use titanium to see what you can delete. once you know what you can delete, remove it on the copy on the computer. then once you are done, add all of the apps you want into the system/app folder (remember you have a limited space) and then flash the custom rom. its kind of fun to do because it gives you a much better understanding of the system.
i can write a guide, but honestly, i am so busy with work, it will take me a long time. i can try to work on it, but i know for a fact, not this week. i am just swamped.

It sounds easy and I understand what you are saying. It is definitely the way I want to go from now on. I will take your recommendation of downloading and copying a ROM to mess with. It is how I learn mostly anyway
I've done a ton of deleting using TB these last few months so I already know what can be safely removed.
As for the guide, hell you just wrote it lol.

so I deleted both the mms.apk and the TWlauncher.apk from the system/app folder...I put the GO Launcher EX.apk and the GO SMS Pro.apk into the system/app folder, it works fine at first, but when I restart my phone I get a "unexpected data error, please reinstall GO Launcher EX" error message and forced to uninstall go launcher, also go sms pro disappears from my phone and is no longer installed, without me even uninstalling it...right now I still have the touchwiz launcher and the mms.apk deleted off of my phone, but I had to take go launcher and go sms pro out of my system/app folder for everything to work fine, I also still have you build prop line added...I'm still having the problem with sms pro getting killed often since I guess it isn't a high priority RAM app, since it isnt in the system/app folder...any ideas how I can get your method to work?

Guys, I don't know if that also has happened with your kindles, but there's no way to create a folder on my ADW.
No way at all!
When I was using Go launcher EX I could create folders easily, but with ADW it just doesn't work.
Someone is having the same problem? any workarounds?
No, it doesn't work (and ADW Launcher hasn't been updated in a while so I'm not sure if there is a new version in development or not). It's the same with shortcuts and custom shortcuts too. It's a pain, as I quite like folders, but I'm just sitting patiently for CM7, and then at that point, I probably won't care!
lol I just posted a similar problem with apps that use folders. Did you have this problem before the update?

Yeah, this has been a problem since day 1. Doesn't seem to be just ADW either, Go Launcher Ex has the same problem. Clearly something in the KF stock ROM that disables these things.
I also started a post about the creation of shortcuts ("Car Home") and the lack of the OS recognizing that when I click "Add shortcut" it should give me a list of applications.
I suppose this is related to the lack of being able to create folders. There has to be a way to fix this without resorting to going to CM7. I'd like to be able to keep the Amazon functionality with the vanilla OS feel.

I'm suspect it's buried deep in the kernel somewhere, and I'm not sure it would be any easy fix. I could be wrong, but bearing it mind it doesn't provide any errors, Amazon must have disabled it as part of providing their custom UI.
I'm with you though, I quite like the overall feel and coloring of the Amazon interface, and it's pretty damn functional with a Launcher enabled despite the minor issues such as this.
For some reason, when I was using Go launcher I was able to create the folders, but not shortcuts. Its really strange...
I side-loaded the ADW apk 1.3.6 but it doesn't seem to work on my Kindle. I know this is off-topic but I was hoping someone could tell me which version is best on the Kindle. Every time I go to install it and open it says the ADW.Launcher stopped unexpectedly :/

Simi Folder Widget has got you covered
true, and it works even though the market says its incompatible.
I was able to create folders in Go Launcher, but only by putting icons on top of each other. You have to be really precise though or the icons just move out of the way. Huge pain, took me a couple minutes for EACH folder I made. Haven't found a way to do this in ADW yet...
Hey Guys,
the new update for ADW solved the issue, besides ADW feels a little bit faster on my kindle.
BTW, folders can only be created by putting icons on top of each other, just like we do using Go Launcher.
My Nexus S (i9020a) is running on Jelly Bean, and after recently uninstalling the beta of Apex Launcher and then reinstalling the stable version, I noticed that my Power Control widget was gone.
After I noticed that, I uninstalled Apex Launcher completely (cleared data for the app first to be sure). Still, the Power Control widget was no longer available on my phone.
For the time being, I have downloaded a third-party equivalent off of the Play Store, but I'd really like to know what happened here. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, is there any way to get it back?

Nope. That's a third-party app. The stock Power Controls Widget is nowhere to be found in the app store.
Hi
I'm on the Nexus 7 and have noticed exactly the same thing. This is the stock Android Power Control Widget. It was there with stock launcher and also with Nova Beta, but with Apex, its nowhere to be found.
This just happened on my GNex as well. I figure we're suffering the same issue. Mine vanished after trying out a few 3rd party ones strangely enough. I haven't found anything yet to fix it. Rebooting after an uninstall didn't help either. Any ideas, peeps?

No, no longer in the list (for me anyway).
Hi,
Just my 2 cents.... I'm not sure About JB but all other ROMs the app had to be on the phones memory for the widget to even be available or on the widget list.... so perhaps whichever file the power control is in, maybe it got switched over to SD card
Or
An App that was installed moved the files that are needed for that power control widget.
I know its a stab in the dark but ...
Good luck

Replace your launcher with GO LAUNCHER EX, free on the Play Store. It is the BEST launcher by FAR. Super fast, tons of options, always free.

Did a factory reset and Power Control widget is back (on stock launcher), stock N7 JB.

I've been using Apex launcher this week (which is amazing, and imho has tons more options over Nova), and would like to disable TouchWiz. I noticed that TouchWiz does not have a 'disable' option like a lot of other apps do when viewing app details.
I am rooted, but I'd rather not use Titanium Backup since I do not plan on completely removing the app. I just want to disable it like I have been able to do on the Verizon bloatware apps.
Can I simply go into system/app and rename the TouchWiz app?
I've noticed that when I download/install a new app, the phone still tries to add the app to the TouchWiz home screen which I find annoying.

I've noticed that when I download/install a new app, the phone still tries to add the app to the TouchWiz home screen which I find annoying.

Touchwiz is built into the ROM. The only way to not use Touchwiz is to use AOSP/AOKP or something without TW.

I'm using Apex Launcher as a replacement and would like to disable or freeze TouchWiz without using any new apps like Titanium Backup.

You're still using TouchWiz. You can't NOT use Touchwiz on Stock. Apex is just a launcher. TouchWiz is the entire touch interface. Everything you use is still using TouchWiz.
You remove, freeze, rename, etc. any TW files you will probably brick the device and have to odin back to stock and start all over.

Okay, thanks guys. I guess I misunderstood and though TouchWiz home was just another launcher. I didn't know it was essential to the rom itself.

No worries. TouchWiz Home is just one part of TW, but TW itself is basically the framework added onto Android by Samsung which is part of everything. The only way to not use it is to use AOSP or find another non TouchWiz ROM (not sure if any are out for the S3 yet)
I'm sure you can freeze the launcher and get away with it.
I believe it's "SecLauncher2" or something to that extent. Look for the word "Launcher".
And I'm not responsible if you bootloop

I've been using Apex launcher this week (which is amazing, and imho has tons more options over Nova),.

I'm curious, what are the "tons more options" ??
I have seen people post this before but nobody seems to know what these options are.
I used Apex for months in my old Rezound but I prefer Nova in the G3 myself (& I have the paid version of both Apex & Nova) but maybe I'm missing something.
So far, Nova has had every single setting or option that I want so I am really wondering what I am missing??
Nobody yet have balls to ****ing delete or freeze TW to see if it works along Nova...
****!!

Just use nova to replace TouchWiz as your default launcher and bingo you should be good to go
