How to disable TouchWiz? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I've been using Apex launcher this week (which is amazing, and imho has tons more options over Nova), and would like to disable TouchWiz. I noticed that TouchWiz does not have a 'disable' option like a lot of other apps do when viewing app details.
I am rooted, but I'd rather not use Titanium Backup since I do not plan on completely removing the app. I just want to disable it like I have been able to do on the Verizon bloatware apps.
Can I simply go into system/app and rename the TouchWiz app?
I've noticed that when I download/install a new app, the phone still tries to add the app to the TouchWiz home screen which I find annoying.

Touchwiz is built into the ROM. The only way to not use Touchwiz is to use AOSP/AOKP or something without TW.

I'm using Apex Launcher as a replacement and would like to disable or freeze TouchWiz without using any new apps like Titanium Backup.

You're still using TouchWiz. You can't NOT use Touchwiz on Stock. Apex is just a launcher. TouchWiz is the entire touch interface. Everything you use is still using TouchWiz.

You remove, freeze, rename, etc. any TW files you will probably brick the device and have to odin back to stock and start all over.

Okay, thanks guys. I guess I misunderstood and though TouchWiz home was just another launcher. I didn't know it was essential to the rom itself.

No worries. TouchWiz Home is just one part of TW, but TW itself is basically the framework added onto Android by Samsung which is part of everything. The only way to not use it is to use AOSP or find another non TouchWiz ROM (not sure if any are out for the S3 yet)

I'm sure you can freeze the launcher and get away with it.
I believe it's "SecLauncher2" or something to that extent. Look for the word "Launcher".
And I'm not responsible if you bootloop

I'm curious, what are the "tons more options" ??
I have seen people post this before but nobody seems to know what these options are.
I used Apex for months in my old Rezound but I prefer Nova in the G3 myself (& I have the paid version of both Apex & Nova) but maybe I'm missing something.
So far, Nova has had every single setting or option that I want so I am really wondering what I am missing??

Nobody yet have balls to ****ing delete or freeze TW to see if it works along Nova...

[Q] Prerooted Sense rom and custom Launcher

Hi, I want ask if is possible in pre rooted sense rom change sense launcher for Go Launcher Ex. I don't like sense native launcher.
If I install on sense rom GoLauncherEx.... native sense launcher run on background.... It's possible replace native sense launcher with Go Launcher Ex?
Sry for my english...
If you don't want any part of the sense experience, why use a sense ROM? It would just be running in the background using resources.
Sorry if I misunderstand you.

Why not use aosp or aokp? There are no sense launchers running in background

You guys obviously know, that sense is not only the launcher, but also quite a few other tricks and tweaks across the system? I would have to double check, but while You cannot get rid of sense completely, launcher doesn't seem to stay in memory when other is chosen as default action for home button etc.

Yeah i've seen a lot of people add a custom launcher to sense for a lot of reasons. Sense adds a lot of functionality to the ROM and some can't live without the widgets. There may be reasons. But anyway, a custom launcher doesn't require root but i suppose it's good you have it. Just get one from the market and it should work.
However, i don't think it's possible to replace the sense launcher. Sense seems to take a huge impact if you remove a part of it. That is one problem.
EDIT: I've just seen that you can disable the sense launcher by getting an app called SystemApp Remover. The app does cost though but should stop sense launcher from running without removing it. The app you want to disable is Rosie.apk. Make a backup incase and make sure the 3rd party launcher is installed before you do this!!
I suppose Titanium Backup could do the same by freezing the Rosie.apk but you would still have to pay for the pro version.
Once again i'd like to say if you try this, make sure you have a backup and also you install the 3rd party launcher before you freeze it!

Hmm.... maybe I try this.... when will be finished first Sense 4 ROM.... Thanks for response
hmm was thinking about the same thing and exploring the inside of the rom.
is it possible to (1)remove any launcher/app.apk and (2)add in any apps of your own, in system/app ? or it is more complicated than that?
Actually there is a Sense-less WipeOut ROM, the ROM is still based on Sense, but uses ICS-based launcher (can't rmbr whether it is Nova/Apex/trebuchet)..
maybe OP can try that? But mind you that ROM is Sense 4.0A based, so some functions may not be working properly yet (touch to focus camera, WiFi hotspot, etc) but it is stable enough as daily driver..
I hope this is what OP means..
i use apex launcher and have rosie.apk frozen by titanium backup. you can also delete it with root explorer if you want. mind that display personalise settings aren't working any more without rosie or with rosie frozen, so you have to set all those things before you ger rid of it.

[Q] Changing the Stock launcher to NOVA

Hello,
Today I have flashed Slimbean into Nexus S and it has the Holo Launcher HD as the stock launcher and I dont like it much.
Also I have bought NOVA Prime and its the main launcher I use on all my devices and I want to intergrate it to the system as the stock launcher and remove Holo HD completely. what im trying to achieve is save some ram that native launcher using while its in background.
I have read couple of articles says rename the NOVA apk as the native launcher and place it in system/app folder. but almost everyone replied had said that it leads to force closes. and also I think there's something missing too. what about the app data folder? shouldn't it be replace the native one too?
so can you please guide me on how to achieve this correctly?
Thank you for your time.

If you go to "slimcenter" in the phone settings, there is a place where you can delete system apps. There should be one that is called "launcher2.apk" that you can remove, then you should only be left with nova.

Thank you very much for your reply. Slim 3.1 didnt have that slim center. but I managed to do this from using aroma file manager in CWM.
but as every other one said, it leads to force closes every time. After the boot, nova repeatedly closing itself.
is this the only method? what about the data folder? would it be the reason?

I have no idea what could be causing the FC's. I have not done this myself. Maybe what I would suggest, is to leave that launcher there, and just disable it from the app menu. I don't think that program uses too much space if its just sitting there.

how to make s3 weather clock widget work on nova launcher?

hello there, i would like to ask about the weather clock widget of galaxy s3 to work on the nova launcher or the adw launcher since it doesn't appear in the launcher widgets..
It is part of the Touch Wiz framework. Will not work if you use a different launcher. Don't think it would be an easy port. Good luck.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
I had also tried to do that and wondered the same thing... thanks for the reply (love nova though, not changing it by any means)
Wow, good to know. Never liked Touchwiz, but it is a bit frustrating to be locked out of the other goodies.
I was wondering too. But for me Touchwiz is no compromise against Apex-Launcher.

You would need to be rooted to do what you suggested. The app for the weather widget is part of the TW framework and does not need to be installed but rather pushed (or copied using something like Root Explorer) to the System/App folder. Even then it won't work unless you use the TW launcher. Good luck.

Not sure about other launchers that look like TW. The icons look the same to me, but I see what you are taking about with the dock icons. Not a big deal for me. Have you played around with the Apex settings to see if you can add dock labels?

so apex launcher is the best way to make the experience kind of iphone like??? what do u recommend using in the developper options to make all the transitions in the phone have no lag, i believe lag is experienced in every android device of samsung when u enter the contacts or log, or even settings, the exit is smooth but the entering animation has some kind of unsmooth feel.
any recommendations thanks.

[Q] Moto G App Drawer (KK 4.4.3)

Hi, Today I boought a Moto G, and immediately upgraded and rooted it to Android 4.4.3. (Previously I'd been using a Galaxy S2 and a Xperia S)
The first thing I noticed is the changes in the app drawer, which I hate. I do not like that widgets and apps are mixed, I mean I liked the cycling thru apps in Jelly Bean, and having to select the widgets tab to cycle thru widgets.
Another thing I noticed is that the Moto G doesn't have an options button. While in the App drawer, all 3 buttons are redundant:
Left side button (Where options usually is) is now back, which takes you to the homescreen...
Middle button (Home) Takes you home .... -In Jelly bean you could long press to open recent apps-
Right side button - Opens recent apps
With that in mind you can tell that you're losing a lot of customizing options, for example, I used to click options and hide apps in Galaxy S2, or sort apps alphabetically, by use, recent install, etc...
I guess my questions is: Is there any way to get those features back using the stock launcher?
To sort apps customly, to separate widgets and make the app drawer cycle thru apps like it's supposed to?
I appreciate the help
I assume the launcher you are using is the stock launcher provided in Android.
If you want more options in the app drawer then it would be better to install another launcher.
My prefered launcher is Apex but I know that a lot of people are using Nova as well.
Both very smooth launcher with lots of options.

Hi Mickey, thanks for your reply.
Yes, I was using stock launcher at the moment of the question, the question basically was if it was possible with stock launcher... I assumed it was not so I downloaded Nova Launcher, but it also doesn't have the option to customly organize apps, like dragging and dropping one before the other in the drawer. If I hold on an app it takes it to the home screen which is not what I want
Also with Nova I could only separate widgets from apps if I made the drawer scroll vertically, I want horizontal with multiple pages, but widgets on a different tab.
What custom launcher has the option to do these things?
Thank you again for your time
I think Solo Launcher has the features you require.

I've tried both solo and Nova launcher but neither has the features I'm looking for, solo offers the option to sort apps but from presets like 'alphabetically, most used, recently used " but I want to sort them manually, I don't understand why I'm having so much trouble finding this option when on previous Android devices was as simple as drag and drop

There are no changes in the app drawer. The stock Google launcher has always worked this way. If your previous devices worked differently, then you were not using the Jellybean launcher, which looked and worked exactly the same way as you are describing.

Nope, that was never possible with stock Jellybean. If it worked that way on your S2, it's either because you had installed a third-party launcher or because that is how Samsung's own launcher (is it still called Touchwiz?) worked. I have never used anything other than Nexus or Google Play Edition devices (as well as played around a bit with Cyanogen), so I couldn't say for sure.
I used to click options and hide apps in Galaxy S2, or sort apps alphabetically, by use, recent install, etc...

No, because they were never in the stock launcher. You will have to try various other third-party launchers until you find one you like. I'm generally happy with the stock one, so I'm afraid I would be useless at recommendations.

Replacing touchwiz

My phone is rooted and I'm tinkering a bit- what are some good launchers to replace touchwiz? Cheers!
NOVA Launcher and Action Launcher.
Both will give you more options in the paid version and both are well worth the money you'll spend on it.

Can I then delete touchwiz? I mean, I have an app that removes anything from my phone as it's rooted.
No you can't. You have to install a custom ROM to completely remove touchwiz. Thus means you wil also lose your Spen functions and you multi window and fingerprint scanner. Now most of these have other options within AOSP ROMs so you can get some them back but it takes quite a bit work to do so. If you are new here, try a launcher first.
After having any other launcger in system folder you can completely remove touchwiz from system.
Not without serious consequences for the functionality of the phone. Please do some homework before deleting TOUCHWIZ altogether. I not saying you shouldn't. Many people love AOSP ROMs and remove touchwiz asap. But first now what your are chosen for.
The site galaxynote4root.com has some videos available about what I'd AOSP and the benefits/costs of going for it with a device as the note 4.
