[Q] Can't set custom launcher as default - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I read through most of the posts concerning custom launchers but still can't find an answer to my problem.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S running on Froyo. I am trying to set GoLauncher as my default launcher but there seems to be a hickup somewhere.
When I hit the home button a window always pops up asking me which launcher I want to use (TW or Go) and I always tick the box underneath to use as default and then select GoLauncher but the window keeps popping up again every time I press the home key.
I also tried to clear the defaults in both TW and Go Launcher but the buttons are grayed out...so I guess the phone does not store my default choice.
Any ideas?

I have the same problem using htc desire z running froyo 2.3.. not rooted.
Have tried re installing. Tried home switcher. tried other launcher than go launcher ex. Problem still persists..
If anyone has made it work for them. Please share what to do.
Thx

Well.. for me the problem was with the 3D camera app.. for some reason it showed up on the bottom of the list of launcher.. unistalled and presto.. no constant settings launcher as default
Via HTC Desire Z

Have tried everything in this post and none have worked for very long.
I am going to try seeing if the Estrongs "Suite" is installed and causing a problem, but I definitely know this isn't a launcher problem as this happens with several different launchers...I thought it was a HTC Sense issue, but I have now seen (I think) a couple of posts from a Samsung device.
I have the Thunderbolt and since the 2.3.4 update, I have had the same problem. I have read several posts, but no real solution. The Homesmack didn't work. This Really sounds like an HTC issue, but I am still trying to read more posts.

Did you try doing a battery pull? Or going into settings and clearing the stock launchers data and cache?
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App

Solution
I have Samsung Galaxy S2 -
Applications - Manage Applications - [All] - TWLauncher - Clear Defaults
I think there's also an App called "Launcher" but look for anything with the word "Launcher" in it and clear the defaults
Or try installing "Go Locker" and it'll ask you again which one you want your default to be

How switch: Launcher Pro/TouchWiz?

I installed Launcher Pro. I read that you can switch between launchers with a selection. I thought you could do it by press on screen, like when adding a widget, and it would be there. But it isn't.
I have searched through the settings, and can't seem to find it.
Any thoughts?

download home switcher from the market or go here
settings/applications/manage applications/select your home screen program
I dont have an android phone yet so someone correct me if i'm wrong ^^
You can download HomeSwitcher from the Market
Without a switcher, you can go into Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/LauncherPro/Reset Defaults. Then next time you hit the Home button, it'll ask you again which one you want and if you want to set one as default again.

Uh, now how do you use it? So then I guess I just need to have an icon for it on the desktop.
I did think I saw somethign that brought up a list just by pressing on the screen. Maybe a different app, or settings. I'll continue to investigate that...but thanks again. I can do what I need!

Long press on the icon and you can change the shortcut options (which app to use, which icon to use, etc)
Whats the app need to be for the phone...
If I select "Phone" application... it doesnt' quite operate like the stock launcher...
When on a phone, the stock launcher when you click on the phone icon, goes to the dialer/call information... when you launch the phone application, it goes to the keypad but not the current call window...
you can get to the current call window by going to the status screen adn clicking on the little green phone during an active call though...

Samsung, this is pathetic!
Wasted 2 hours of my life dealing with your stupidity.
heres the solution (problem was launcher pro):
1. grab the homeswitcher from market
2. set touchwiz crap as default.
3. reboot phone.
from then on, kies acts normally, phone gets detected normally etc etc etc.
thanks for wasting my time samsung.
edit: even after this i had probs, seems i need to reboot phone everytime i need to connect it. on first connect after fresh reboot it seems to work. goodluck. (very very very poor software as expected from samsung)
edit2: this is a bug fest! who coded this samsung? some student? jesus this soft is so bad it kills all the experience. what a piece of junk. barely works. flaky. buggy. samsung, fire your software team asap. they suck. only a true amateur can output this kind of garbage. this is below badly coded visualbasic garbage.

What's the action to execute TWlauncher ? (I mean the TouchWiz app-drawer)
I would mixup LauncherPro homes with TW horizontally scrolling apps
I wonder if there's a way to strip out the touchjizz widgets and use them in launcher pro or something, or make them available for any launcher replacement. I actually like the calendar clock widget.
I'll try picking touchjizz apart tomorrow at work if I get some extra time.

Hi everyone and happy new year!

Lots of fixes for “ForceCloses” and other stability and code improvements.
And to celebrate the new year and the ADWLauncherEX success, I’ve published the ADWNotifier app free for everyone on the market!

Hey, I installed ADWLauncherEX form market. Now, I'm running into some problems:
The Launcher won't save any settings, I set. In fact, every time I exit the settings dialog, the changelog pops up again. Anyone know, what to do about that?

no worries man..i found one aswell, but most of the people with the same problem wrote they found two..
Nevertheless it works like a charm so..
Launcher works great for me so gar on a Galaxy S. However, I noticed one annoying thing: Loading the shortcut list for applications takes an eternity (I have 300+ apps installed). The same thing goes for the dialog in ADWNotfier, where you can select the SMS oder Mail-App. This definitely needs some code improvement.
Hey, I downloaded the app yesterday and it still wont download to my phone I have the captivate and it just runs a bar saying authorizing i left it overnight and it still has that running so i canceled and redid it, still nothing it wont physically install whats wrong?
I love the speed of ADW EX.
Only significant complaint so far is that there's no direct access to System Preferences from the launcher menu. Shouldn't have to go into sub-menus to access the system prefs.
Question: Is there a way to get SMS/Gmail/Voicemail notifications in the dock?
Both LauncherPro+ and Go Launcher will attach such counts to the relevant icons, but I don't see this in ADWLauncher EX. In ADW Settings > General Preferences > System Preferences there's options for "Show notifications" and "Bubble font size", but I have no idea how these apply. I sent myself a SMS, and though my Notification bar was showing one message, there wasn't anything visible in the Launcher itself.
-edit-
OK. Got it working. Didn't realize I need to download ADW Notifier as well.
Would be nice if the notifiers were smart and only wiped the numbers after you actually read the email (for example) rather than as soon as you open Gmail though. That's how Go Launcher seems to work.
So far I'm liking this. I am having a problem, and I don't know if it's a feature or a bug. Every time I swipe down on any part of the screen the notification bar will come down. I switched back to Launcher Pro and it did not do this. Also when switching to the hidden dock it drags the icon form the normal dock. I would also like to see a way to change the dock backgrounds like on Launcher pro. And I'm with saltorio, It would be nice if there was a system prefs from the main menu. But I could get used to it where it is now. Keep up the good job.

So is ADW ever going to get some widgets similar to LPP? Would live to give ADW a serious consideration but having to pay for other apps just to make up for ADWs shortcomings doesn't make sense.

Launchers

I am very happy with the Launcher that comes with the Atrix 2. Why would I purchase or download a different one?
Ermmmm... Well first off, customisability and... nothing more?
If that launcher fits your needs then keep it
Just to have more options......

Customizability and tons of more options. With an aftermarket launcher, you can pretty much tweak the look and feel of your device to suit your needs and desires. You can make it look like "your" device. It doesn't hurt anything to install one of the free launchers and try it out. I would actually recommend it. I personally use LauncherPro but ADW and GoLauncher are pretty good choices as well. If they don't suit your needs then there are many other options on the market. If none of them spark your interest then the stock launcher may be your launcher of choice. It's all about options and choices...Take that iPhone guys!!!
I was fine with the stock launcher with one exception...I cannot stand the horizontal page scrolling for the app drawer. If I wanted my phone to behave like an iPhone I would have kept my iPhone.
So I use ADW or Zeam and got the vertical scrolling back.
In case anyone cared, ADW EX is one of the 10 cent apps on the market today. I typically use Go Launcher, but I'll try out ADW again. Customization is always cool with a launcher.
Most helpful reply, lilhaiti. I am not familiar with Launchers, new to Android, but quick to learn. Thanks!
Sorry if I hijack the thread, but today I installed the ADW Ex and I don't know how to switch back to the original launcher.
Can anyone give me a hand?
I have not found a way to switch without uninstalling ADW. There used to be (still is?) a "home switcher" app in the market. I have used it in the past on other phones I've owned. I don't know if that would work on our phones or not.
The home switcher app should work. Otherwise, you can go to manage apps from settings, select the launcher and remove default. Once you hit your home button again, it will ask you to select your default again.

D'oh! I totally forgot about the remove default option. Using an iPhone for 7 months made me dumb.
Thanks for the answers. I went to app manager and under ADW the option "clear defaults" is greyed (not available) and it says "No defaults set".
Edit: I just tried the home switcher app and it doesn't work either, I can "launch" the original launcher but when I put "set as default" the app crashes.
Do you think if I uninstall ADW I would go back to the original launcher?

This should be true. For some reason with this phone when you install a third party launcher it automatically sets that launcher to default. So by removing ADW you should get the stock launcher back.
I don't know much about this launcher, but ADWLauncher EX is on sale for $0.10 on the Android Market ONLY today. If you want to try it, tonight is the time to get it.
P.S- There's a useful free tool called "HomeSmack" that lets you toggle between multiple launchers at once.

Power Control Widget Vanished

My Nexus S (i9020a) is running on Jelly Bean, and after recently uninstalling the beta of Apex Launcher and then reinstalling the stable version, I noticed that my Power Control widget was gone.
After I noticed that, I uninstalled Apex Launcher completely (cleared data for the app first to be sure). Still, the Power Control widget was no longer available on my phone.
For the time being, I have downloaded a third-party equivalent off of the Play Store, but I'd really like to know what happened here. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, is there any way to get it back?

Nope. That's a third-party app. The stock Power Controls Widget is nowhere to be found in the app store.
Hi
I'm on the Nexus 7 and have noticed exactly the same thing. This is the stock Android Power Control Widget. It was there with stock launcher and also with Nova Beta, but with Apex, its nowhere to be found.
This just happened on my GNex as well. I figure we're suffering the same issue. Mine vanished after trying out a few 3rd party ones strangely enough. I haven't found anything yet to fix it. Rebooting after an uninstall didn't help either. Any ideas, peeps?

No, no longer in the list (for me anyway).
Hi,
Just my 2 cents.... I'm not sure About JB but all other ROMs the app had to be on the phones memory for the widget to even be available or on the widget list.... so perhaps whichever file the power control is in, maybe it got switched over to SD card
Or
An App that was installed moved the files that are needed for that power control widget.
I know its a stab in the dark but ...
Good luck

[Q] ADW EX Reverting Custom Icons to Generic

Anyone else using ADW EX launcher's custom shortcuts? I'd been using them successfully until recently. This is what I do: I create a Custom Shortcut, assign a Launcher Action to it (assigning each app drawer category to a custom shortcut), and then assigning an icon from the BigDX Serenity theme. Then I drag the custom shortcut to my dock, and I have all of my apps sorted in categories, easily accessible from my dock. And because I've used an icon for each, that represents that particular app category, I quickly know which dock icon contains which apps.
But now, the custom icons won't stick. They keep reverting to a generic icon after a reboot or after I use Titanium Backup or just about anything. I suspect this has something to do with being rooted, as my husband's Note doesn't do this. He's not rooted.
Needless to say, this is annoying, as I can't remember which icon contains which apps. They all look the same! And I have 11 of them.
Anyone else experience this? I emailed the developer, but have received no response.
EDIT: This seems to only happen when the Custom Shortcut is for a Launcher Action. The icons don't revert to generic if my Custom Shortcut is for an Application.
So, 108 views and no one's experienced this issue? Anyone know of a better way to contact the developer? I've emailed twice, with no reponse.
This problem, while not critical, is extremely annoying.

i don't think it has anything to do with being rooted... i think the problem is on adw launcher..
why don't you try clearing adw launcher's data and and see what happens.... adw has backup
feature right?.. back your preferences then clear data on settings/app manager/adw launcher
let's start on that.....
and i saw on playstore that this bigdx theme is a separate download and not from adw...
so you might wanna clear data on bigdx too.. i think that'll solve your problem..
it's not a system issue anyways... so it's either adw or bigdx theme...
or maybe you are using some kind of task manager that kills your bigdx theme on background......

Okay, so I did this:
1. Backed up ADW.
2. Cleared data.
3. Restored ADW.
4. Assigned a custom icon to one of my dock shortcuts.
5. Restart ADW (this typically wipes out my custom icons, as does a reboot)
6. Custom icon is back to generic.
Can't clear date or cache on theme, as those options are greyed out.
Thanks for your suggestions, but still no luck.

hhmm.. try clearing your data again but don't restore your preferences.. set them all over again.. if it still ends up the same try using a different theme (free ones so you dont have to spend) ..
and if it works then the problem is in your bigdx theme... i hope it helps i don't use adw but most app problems are fixed by clearing data..

EDIT: Crap, it's the theme. I did all of that and then assigned a picture to a shortcut and a BigDX icon to a shortcut. Restarted ADW. The picture remained, and the BigDX icon reverted to generic. Guess I'll try contacting the theme developer and see if I get anywhere. This is a bummer. It was working perfectly until a week or two ago.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your help!

at least we now know the problem!.. :good:
yeah that's odd to suddenly stop working... maybe an update on adw or bigdx caused it....
I tried another theme, and it worked fine. Emailed the BigDX developer, but I've not had any luck emailing app developers lately.
Thanks again!
Okay, I keep reading that this developer and that developer is really responsive. But I've emailed the ADW developer twice and the BigDX developer, and neither has ever gotten back to me. I've been very cordial and complimentary, and included my issues/question. Nothing.
How do you folks get people to answer you?
late to the party but also very annoyed with this situation....
I like to remove the dock and the action bar, so having a way to launch the app drawer is something I need on my home screens... but now I can't do that when im using theme icons
Havent sent any emails but may do so soon if I can't find a solution to this issue....
